Keeping Passwords Safe

I use someone else's wireless internet connection; I was told that at any time somebody can go straight into my computer and view my user name's and passwords - how do I keep this from happening? How can I keep everything to myself?

A lot of this thread is completely wrong.
If you are on a wireless network that you do not run, you can't use WPA because that is controlled by the network owner. What you are really concerned about is the transmission of your data and passwords. Another person does not have to "get into" your computer to see them. They simply need to sit there on the same network and wait for your traffic to go by, then they can simply pick them out of the air. This is because most web traffic is transmitted in plain text. This is the main risk that the other posters are completely ignoring. The only time your data is safe is if you are using some type of encryption such as HTTP, SSL, or VPN. That is what I do to stay safe at Internet cafes.
The other person usually can't break into your Mac, but as shown above, they do not have to. However, you will allow others to break into your Mac if you leave Sharing services turned on. Go into your Sharing preferences and turn them all off. Also, if you have the sharing feature turned on in iPhoto or iTunes, or Bonjour turned on in iChat, you may be making yourself known that way.
Privacy is a strong argument to own your own connection. If you are using this other person's network without permission, you may have long ago opened yourself up to a complete discovery of your network activity, through something as simple as seeing your shared folder or your iTunes shared library on the network.

Look in the App Store on your iPhone 5S.
What 'data' and 'password' are you trying to keep safe?
Your data is best kept safe by regular backups to iCloud (which are only accessible via your Apple ID & password) or iTunes (which is stored locally on your computer, which has numerous security methods, including the ability to encrypt the iTunes backup).

  • Keychain is not keeping passwords

the keychain is not keeping passwords. I go to check my email and everytime I get a popup window asking for password. I click the "save this password" box. When I go to check my email again....I get the same popup window asking for my password.
I did the keychain first aid and there are no problems.
Also, is there a way to get the number off my wireless network card that came with the computer? I want to set my wireless network up so that it just accepts access from this laptop.
    Thank you!

Hi Shirley, sounds like a deeper problem, we should start ewith this for safety...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    Then See if this helps...

  • Sync/Copy Password Safe database from PC

I have Password Safe on my iPhone and on my PC. I would like to synchronise or copy the PW Safe database from my PC to my iPhone. Is this possible?
ps. I don't want this Password Database to be stored anywhere online. Sites as Dropbox and alike have turned out to often that they can offer the needed security.
    Regards,
    Rob,

I found the solution to my problem.
With the application DiskAid (http://www.digidna.net/products/diskaid) I can get directly access to my iPhone. This way I can copy the Password Safe database from my PC to the iPhone. And yes, Password Safe for iPhone is 100% compatible with the PC/MAC versions .
    I am happy

  • I've received a gmail email from Microsoft account team saying We detected something unusual about a recent sign-in to the Microsoft account ******* To help keep you safe, we required an extra security challenge. I then asks to follow link and sign in

Please help because since I've received an email from Microsoft warning they have detected suspicious activity on our Microsoft email account (wasn't even aware my gmail account had anything to do with Microsoft) I have been receiving other odd emails which consist of one or two huge lines of text in bright blue, usually to do with debt or one the Grand National and betting. These emails do no appear to be addressed to me but I'm still receiving them. I have put them all into the Junk Folder (by the way is that the same as reporting them as spam on and iPhone or iPad?)
I'm still concerned about this Microsoft email though. It advises that we need to give some extra security information for them to be able to protect us in future (which initially looked to me as if it may be a phishing email). If I follow the link it takes me to a page that looks fairly official and could well be Microsoft, I then asks me to sign in using username and password.
To be honest Im not sure I even have a Microsoft username or password and I'm concerned even if I did know it, whether I should be filling in that information or not? Also what's likely to happen once I've signed in? I'm concerned that once I had entered their site they would just be phishing for more information?
Just in case there is any relevance around about the time of receiving this email I and performed two fairly unusual actions.
    1.  I contacted an American company to ask if they would sell something to the UK.
    2.  I started using Keychain on my iPhone and iPad and signed in to all the shops and sites I use with my usual password and changed them all the keychain suggested passwords.
Typical trying to make myself safer and yet I'm now concerned I could be in danger.
Please can someone advise me on what I should do about this email, i,e, is it a phishing mail and should I Junk it or should I answer it and try and sign in and if I should answer it how do I know what my Microsoft sign in and password is?
Also can someone tell me how I report spam on my iPhone and iPad in a gmail account?
Sorry I've rattled on so much and I'm asking so many questions but they are all connected.

It doesn't.  Gmail is owned by Google.

    Report it to Google:

  • How i can keep password for some bookmark folders and delete all cookies excepting some?

I want to have password for certain book mark folders before choosing them and I want to clear all cookies EXCEPTING SOME SITES, HOW I DO IT.

You can't protect bookmarks with a password in Firefox.
You can let all cookies expire if you close Firefox and make an Allow exception for the ones that you want to keep.
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Keep until": "I close Firefox"
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Exceptions"
Make sure that you do not use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences" (Site Preferences includes the cookie exceptions)

  • Password keeper password?

when, in the spirit of enquiry, i open password  keeper it wants me  to enter a password
what does password keeper do?- i'm going to guess at  what it says on the label and that whenever i enter a password it keeps it there and that the password prevents another from discovering said passwords always assuming they can make any sense of the bb

The passwordkeeper is used to store your passwords eg. You can keep logon details of programs that you use eg Hotmail, Skype etc etc anything that has to do with passwords, in other words you always have your passwords with you everytime.
The passwordkeeper password can be anything that you like, the otherthing about passwordkeeper is that you are able to generate a password in case you can't think of any.

  • Keeping Laptop safe ?

Hi all , just a question a little off topic.
im a very happy owner of a 15 ' Macbook Pro and a Macbook and was wondering how people keep there laptops safe at home in the uk.
can any one recommend a good Laptop Safe i install at home ?
    thanks
    yaddle

Not sure what's available in the UK, but a Google search of "computer safe" will give you a lot of options to look at in a variety of price ranges.
A cable lock is always good to have, as you can lock your Mac to something while working anywhere you are. Kensington is a good brand for these.
A regular small safe that you can bolt to the floor is an option for when you want to stash your Mac out of sight. I use an old locking military fireproof safe that looks like a file cabinet to put mine in if I need to. There are products made specifically for laptops, but a fire proof lockable safe or file cabinet could also work, and be useful for safeguarding other valuables as well.
    Good luck!

  • Cannot get mail will not keep password

cannot get mail will not keep password

    Use Keychain First Aid:
Open Keychain Access, located in Applications/Utilities
Choose Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid.
Enter your user name and password.
    Select Repair and click Start.
If any problems are found run again to verify all repaired.
In Mail, when you add the password in the account window, you have to click out of the account to save. When you add the password in SMTP settings it saves automatically.

  • Is fxLegalizeNTSC trustworthy to keep color safe for broadcast?

Cutting a promo for broadcast and I just want to make sure that fxLegalizeNTSC at the top of the stack will keep color in safe regions.

ON first establishing a relationship with a b-cast entity, get their specific requirements for codecs/standards/formats & etc and then do a SHORT sample of the kind of footage/subject you'll be shipping them. Send it to their QC types to load onto their system and make sure it meets their specs. Adjust as necessary from there. Some folks around here have complete editing production setups with separate vid cards for b-cast monitors all designed to be calibrated to spec. They pretty much know that what signal they put out WILL match any particular given need. They still always send a test to any new service they deliver to.
For the rest of us, running less-"enhanced" equipment, but still calibrated to consistency, such tests are also needed ...  and again, modify the outputs according to the feedback you get.
It's simply kind of scary to expect to send b-cast ready material to a network/service that you haven't worked with before ... it might fly, but if it doesn't, wow ... not good. I know my screen is calibrated for rec709, and most of what I do goes to dvd's for clients to have a personal items or to the web for short fun promo pieces. Neither is nearly as critical as delivering content for a network b-cast, but I still have tested on various types of tv's for the dvd's, and through various web players for the web-deliverable material. Though those two 'streams' of viewing have rather wide possible individual ... projection, what do we call it these days? ... still, I note the range of visual results and set a seemingly middle-course set of output criteria so the content looks at least decent over most equipment it will be viewed on. I've had a couple guys what deliver all their material for tv stations & networks ... who find their output needs vastly simpler than mine as they can just set their calibration and when it's on, it's on. I have to ... guesstimate ... at times.
But then most of my clients are NOT as critical of optical senses as you'll find in many professional b-cast centers.

  • How can I delete Firefox to get rid of the password safe?

I started "Use master password" and entered a password, which was accepted. But the one I wrote down is NOT accepted. How can I
#1 close Firefox and start it OR
#2 can I get round this block any other way,
    # 3 OR do I just stop using Firefox and Thunderbird?

You can reset your master password. See this article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Master_password#Resetting_the_master_password

  • Keeping iTunes on a Separate Hard Drive, and Keeping it Safe.

    Apple Discussion
Hello everyone. Apologies if is this isn't quite the right place but I've searched around in various communities and had not found something similar to what I'm thinking about.
I have a OWC Mercury Elite Pro Qx2 4TB external drive enclosure (with four drives each 1TB in size) that stored my iTunes library, backed-up school work, old copies of Dropbox and had a partition for TimeMachine. Last night the drive had stopped working and I haven't been able to access any files. Now not all of the drives were the same make and model, and that was just one of several issues.
My problems aside, I am looking for something that I can replace my enclosure with. Ideally I would like to back up my entire iTunes library and that has forced me to think about RAID, which is a little over my head. Ignoring factors like money and memory size can someone talk me through what is the best configuration of RAID for large backups of this type? My iTunes consists more of TV shows and movies than it does of music, and I would love to have a partition for TimeMachine.

I keep all my photos on a separate hard disk.
Are you saying that you're running a "referenced" library? Look in iPhoto's Advanced preference pane and compare what you see to this screenshot:
    What is it?
