Keeping Wireless Seperate from Wired

I have an existing wired DSL network with some of the machines using static IPs. I would like to add wireless but have it completely seperate so anyone on the wireless cannot access the wired network. Should I use a AP or Router? I would like to use DHCP for the wireless connections and of course will have security on the wireless. I have read that changing the subnet is all I need to do but could really use some advice as I have also read about getting multiple routers. What is the best practice?

To keep your networks separate, they will need to be kept on separate subnets, so you need a wireless router.  (An access point would have to be on the same subnet as your wired network.)   I assume your existing wired router is still using 192.168.1.1
Modem  ---- wireless router ---- wired router
                    192.168.2.1             192.168.1.1
Use an ethernet cable to connect modem to Internet port of wireless router.
Use an ethernet cable to connect LAN port of wireless router, to Internet port of wired router.
Before connecting the two routers, in the wireless router, set "Local IP address" to 192.168.2.1
Before connecting the two routers, in the wired router, set "Internet connection type" to "Static", with IP address of 192.168.2.2, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and "Default Gateway" and "DNS address" to 192.168.2.1.  Note that in some cases, you may need to set the "DNS address" to your true Internet DNS address.
Users of the wireless router will not be able to access anything on the 192.168.1.1 subnet.

  • Keeping Swing seperate from program

I am working on a project where I have to create the ineterface. This has to be seperate from the actual workings of the system. I cant seem able to do it without integrating the interface and the workings of the system. The task is to produce a simple game which provides a quiz to its users. It should have a number of front ends:
    1) Player's front-end - gives a selection of (perhaps random) questions where the
user selects one from five choices.
    2) Scoring front-end - displayed after game - if mark is in top 10 then user is asked
    to enter their name.
    3) Manager's front-end - used to enter questions, reset top 10 table.
    4) Non-graphical front-end - to ensure that GUI is designed as an add on.
I really cant do the interface seperatly. Could someone show me what to do.

In order to separate the UI from the data model there must be some kind of defined interface. Otherwise you don't know what events/methods you can use or that will be used to notify you of changes. For example, you need to have some predefined method to call on the back-end when the user selects an answer. The back-end is then responsible for checking the answer and calculating scores, etc.
Always remember that a UI is merely a visual representation (even a text based UI) of the underlying data model. If someone has given you a job to program the UI, tell them you need to know how to communicate with the data model and if they don't have it yet, tell them they need a data model specification before they can hope to program the data model itself. If they haven't defined a spec yet then they need to look at the software development cycle a bit better.

  • Fastest way to wirelessly print from wired printer?

Hi all, I have an old laser printer (Hp Laserjet 1320n) that I have ressurected, and I wish to connect it to my wireless network (airport extreme 5th gen). It has a usb 2.0 port and an ethernet port. I am wondering which printing method would be faster. Should I connect it by usb to the usb port on the extreme? Or, should I connect it to the extreme by a Cat5e cable? Which one would be faster?

Just set it up today, thanks for reply. After a little digging through hp's site, but I found the manual and set it up. The thing that prevented it from working correctly was that it was still trying to connect to my old office's wired network which no longer exists. After reseting the network card everything is working now and seems more reliable than with usb .
    Thank you both,

  • Outlook 2010 disconnects when switching from wired to wireless

A Windows 7 Pro 64bit laptop with Outlook 2010 keeps disconnecting from the exchange when switching from wired to wireless or vice versa. Then it wont reconnect. Restarting Outlook occasionaly works, not all the time.
Holding CTRL and clicking the Outlook symbol in the notifcation area they connection status and reconnect doesn't work either.
The only way it will reconnect apart from restarting the machine is to restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service on our Exchange server.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

  • My daughter has an iPod touch using my apple ID, I just purchased an iPhone with the same ID. Is there a way to keep my stuff seperate from her ipod but still share the iTunes account?

My daughter has an iPod touch using my apple ID, I just purchased an iPhone with the same ID. Is there a way to keep my stuff seperate from her ipod but still share the iTunes account? I was looking through the photo section on my iPhone and found pics my daughter has taken from her iPod. I do not want my pics, emails, etc to show up on her iPod. Is there a way to stop this from happening or do I have to create a different Apple ID for her to use instead?

If you have iOS 8 on all devices then:
If under 13 years create a new ID for her by:
Family Sharing and Apple IDs for kids - Apple Support
The use family sharing to share apps
    http://www.apple.com/ios/ios8/family-sharing/
Family purchases and payments - Apple Support
If underage and not i)S on all devices then you have to create an ID for here under your name and supervise it use:
Create a NEW account using these instructions so yo do not have to use a credit card.
Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
    More details of how:
    http://ipadhelp.com/ipad-help-tips-tricks/how-to-get-free-apps-from-the-app-stor e-without-a-credit-card/
Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter
and Settings>iCloud if you want her to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.

  • I just purchased the airport Express to use in hotels while traveling to create a wireless network from the hotels wired dsl.  A friend said to set up the network from home prior to traveling.  How do I set this up?  Thanks.

I just purchased the airport Express to use in hotels while traveling to create a wireless network from the hotels wired dsl.  A friend said to set up the network from home prior to traveling.  How do I set this up?  Thanks.

In addition to RyanJC's comments, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can store up to five different http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108081 configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • How do I keep my Ipad from dropping its wireless connection?

How do I keep my Ipad from dropping its wireless connection?
Most of the time, my iPad does not maintain a connection to the interenet via my wifi router. My PC laptop has continuous connection, so I know it is not the internet connection.
Is there a way to trouble shoot this? Can I purchase a dedicated IP Address for my Ipad? This is beyond aggrevating since internet activity is the main reason I purchased the pad.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Poet Margo

I would suggest that you give Apple Tech Support a call and go over your settings under WI-FI and General Settings as well as your router settings etc.. There are all sorts of things I could tell you to try but this forum is not the best place to go over all the numerous settings that could be the issue. Just call them and they will walk you through the proper trouble shooting steps.

  • WRT300N has no access from wired to wireless addresses

I have a WRT300N that I used just for wireless access till now. If I connect two devices to wired ports they can see each other. All of the devices connected wireless can see each other and access the internet. Communication from wired to wireless doesn't work. I can't ping a wireless device from a wired one or vice versa. Firmware is latest as of 1/9/08. Settings are factory default other than turning on WEP. Any ideas?

Try the following test:  Connect a computer by wire to the WRT300N.   Verify that you can get a working Intenet connection.   In the computer, turn off any software firewall, including Windows Firewall.
    1)  Can you get a properly working Internet connection?
    2)  Can you ping 192.168.1.1  ?
If you cannot ping 192.168.1.1 then perhaps this is not your router's address. Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Look at the "Default Gateway". Is it 192.168.1.1 ?  Try to ping the "Default Gateway" address.
    3)  What is listed as the "Default Gateway" address?
    4)  Can you ping the "Default Gateway" address?
If you still have problems, maybe you have not gotten your software firewall completely turned off.  Some firewalls are hard to turn off.
If you are using Zone Alarm, right click on the ZA icon in the system tray (lower right corner of screen) and then click "Shutdown ZoneAlarm", and see if this fixes your problem. If this does not work, try the following with Zone Alarm: Open the ZAISS control center, go to Privacy, then temporarily turn off Ad Blocking and Cookie Control, and see if that fixes your problem.
If you are using Noton Internet Security with the Add-on Pack, be sure to turn off the Pop-up Blocker. Some users have reported that they needed to uninstall the entire Norton Add-on Pack.

  • OJ 6500A Disappears from wired & wireless Network

    Hi,
I have a recent problem that occurs with printing from wired network on Win 7 (64) machines, iPhones, iPad, Win XP (wireless connection to network). Most of the time the printer can't be located by the HP SW (ePrint or local installed printer in Win 7). If I power down/up the printer, poof it can be found & prints/scans fine. This also occurs with scanning using HP Scan (shocking, right?).
It didn't have this problem when I first got it; worked day in/day out wired and wireless.
I have reinstalled SW on PCs and iOS devices and attempted to update firmware on the OJ, still happens. When I tried firmware update the HP Printer Update SW determined it was "not applicable" to my printer (Version: SYM2FN1110AR).
Network: Netgear Rangemax N600 Router with wired connection to printer and two of the affected PCs; other devices are wireless. Problem happens with manual IP addres and automatic.
This seems like a SW/FW problem to me but I seem to have exhasted that trail. Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello-
I will include a link with some useful information in regards to wireless connections.

Make sure that the energy save mode is turned off on the printer. Click on the setup icon, scroll to preferences, then down to energy save mode. Turn if off and see if that helps.
Also, remember a click on the Kudos star to the left is a quick "Thanks" for a helpful post.
Please select the "Accept as Solution" button on the post that best answers your question.
    I appreciate your input !
    Thank You,

  • I am on a wireless network.  Why do I keep getting messages from iTunes stating that I am not?

I am on a wireless network and keep getting messages from ITunes stating that I am not on a wireless network.  I know the wireless is working.  Itunes will not allow me to rent a movie until i get on the wireless network of which I am already on.  Help.

I just bought two song without problem, then i tried to get the video of the week (free) in canada and I had the same message as you.
the video is just over 50 MB, which is the new limit for file size for App on IOS over 3G and LTE.
I tried on my iPhone same thing. I even put it in the Airplane mode, and then activeated the WiFi
    with the same result.
I then bought another song, smaller than 50 MB and it worked.
My video is not listed as Bought, and it is not available in the "Check for available downoload"
Did any of you had tried to buy something under the size of 50 MB ?
Try the free song to see if is it seize related.

  • How can I keep my child from UNBLOCKING contacts or numbers I have blocked? I know in restrictions when you disable account changes at least on ios 6,this greyed out the iMessage button so the kids couldn't deactivate their text feature.

Here's the issue.  Kids got themselves into some trouble on iPods.  We set all restrictions any turned off iMessage etc, which I noticed they can't turn back on bc it's gray with the don't allow account changes set.  BUT, it still allows Wi-Fi to be turned on and off!  How can I disable them being able to turn that on wo asking me??  In ios 7, the blocking feature, fabulous, BUT, how can I keep the kids from UNBLOCKING numbers I have blocked?  What I am looking to do actually is allow my kids to be able to text family but block everyone else.  And ask me to turn on wi fi.  How and can this even be done?  Right now my d text is turned off completely.  And she knows the inside and out of her device so she can turn wi fi on herself.  On vacation she entered the wi fi code of our condo and so I did forget network, which didn't work and wi fi kept connecting anyway wo requiring password again!  HELP!  Thanks :)  Also, they have iPods now but am asking these questions based on them getting our 4s's with ios 7.

TeresaBoo, I empathize with your dilemma and have a similar problem. I'm trying desperately to keep my teenage daughter away from a controlling and abusive boyfriend. Of course, she is in denial and thinks it's love. Sure, I can block text messages through our wireless provider, but iMessages run on an independent network. I can block a phone number from iMessaging on her phone, but she can unblock it just as easily. I wish there was some way for parents to create a password to protect settings. Don't let negative comments get you down. Honestly, if someone can't relate to your question or offer help, why are they even bothering to comment??

  • How do I keep my Imessages from being viewed on other devices under my apple ID?

How do I keep my Imessages from being viewed on other devices under my apple ID?

No, you can authorize any number of email addresses on your Apple Id and then select one of those to use as an alternate Send and Recieve for Messages. It isn't necessary to use seperate AppleIDs. I use my phone number on my iPhone and an email address on the iPad.

  • Trying to use ATV wirelessly with a wired Mac Pro

I have a new Mac Pro that is connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme via a 16 place switch. The AX controls the IP addressing. I also just purchased an ATV to hook up to my HDTV. I attached it and booted up the ATV, it went through the start-up process and I was able to stream movie previews easily. The problem is that it is not seen by the Mac Pro. The ATV has the latest update as does the Mac Pro. Failure of iTunes to see the ATV or vise versa seems to be a consistent problem.
To complicate the problem, I have an Airport Express in another part of the house to stream audio, a Belkin wireless bridge as a print server to 2 ethernet printers, and another Belkin wireless bridge to the same Sony TV for updates.
I am at a total loss as to why they cannot see each other. Is the fact that the Mac Pro wired to the network and the ATV wireless a problem? Everything else seems to work from wired to wireless. Any help is appreciated!

Finally got it to show up in the devices bar last night. It would not show up at all unless I have the ATV on the sync screen. Just sitting there by the TV was not good enough for the two to recognize each other. I found this out by accident while sitting on the couch fumbling with my laptop and playing with the menus. While changing settings and menus, the ATV appeared suddenly when I went back to the sync screen. When I went to the desktop with the ATV still on the sync screen, it appeared. Now everything works well. I just wish that the internal storage drive was larger since my iTunes library is >132GB by itself. That doesn't give much extra room!! Thanks all.

  • Does not having windows xp keep your pc from communicating with an apple airport express base station?

Does not having windows xp keep your pc from communication with an apple airport base station?

It say's this on the main Apple Website:
Support for WPA requires Mac OS X v10.3 or later.  Use of Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) reduces the maximum number of network users. When joining an existing wireless network, AirPort Express supports only WPA-Personal. WPA2 requires a Mac computer with an AirPort Extreme Card and Mac OS X v10.3 or later.
So it has to be on WPA-Personal.
The Airport Utility should tell you what is wrong with it when it is orange.
Also, is it running on the same channel? For instance, are they both running on channel 1? Are you extending a network, or creating a network?
Hope that brain snap just puts everything together.

  • Firefox slow wireless but fast wired. No issues running IE wireless. Tried system restore, fact. reset, turned off accl, disabled addons, run in safe mode.....

So i have an HP e118dx running on windows 8.1 with very little software on it. Currently running FF 37.0.1 and in wireless mode it always hangs up, runs slow, or times out. When plugged in it runs just fine. Can get on net using IE via wireless and no issues. So it seems to be something specific to FF on the wireless side. Thought it might have been my wireless card but running IE just fine seems to rule that out.
Have already tried system restore a few times, factory reset, turn off hardware accel., run in safe mode(FF), disabled add ons and nothing seems to help. If i have tabs open while wired, then go wireless and refresh the pages or browse on the already open pages i tend to get a couple minutes of trouble free experience before it slows to a halt again.
To recap....FF on wireless=slow and wired=fast. No difference when using IE wireless---always fast.

Not sure what you mean by # of connections being made. Not sure if that means tabs open, or folks using the actual wireless network. A while back when i was going through this with the isp i got a crash coarse on how to go into the modem and check a bunch of different stuff, as well as reset things. When looking in there only 1 or 2 computers showed on the network. The network is password protected......i guess protected only to the extent that a pswrd can. Not certain if someone nefariously connected somehow.....didn't show up when looking for users on the network though.
The first bullet point......Not sure how to do any of that so i'd say no.
Second bullet point......Yes, did lots of clearing temp files, caches, history, etc. along with systems restores and factory resets. although not exactly sure what you mean by dns cache. Might have done this but don't recall specifically seeing that.
Third bullet point.....It doesn't make any difference on this end whether its on no proxy, auto proxy, manual proxy. While i have no idea what all this stuff does/affects performance i played with it on all different settings and nothing changed here. Put it back to no proxy.
The thing is even when my wireless FF is acting up other devices in the home can be on the wireless with no issues. Think the other devices are using Chrome and some phone wifi hookup. Keep in mind if i switch to IE on the same device with FF windows open the IE will run just fine. At any given time there should only be 1-4 devices on the network so i'm guessing that shouldn't overload anything. Besides none of the other devices ever seem to come into this issue.
There always seems to be some issue that pops up after updates. Can't ever just leave working things alone.
