Ken Burns pan/zoom tutorial?

I need to pan and zoom around smoothly on some still images of old paintings in my Final Cut project (I have Final Cut Pro 5 and Motion 2). I'm fairly competent with Final Cut, but new to Motion. Does anyone know of any tutorials, either written or video, in a book or on the Web, that might explain to me how to do smooth pan/zooms in Motion, i.e. Ken Burns type stuff? (The Apple manual for Motion that came with the Studio suite puts me to sleep, and I can't seem to find the info I want in it anyway).
Thanks for any help.

  • Permanantly disabling "ken burns" pan and zoom?

I never want to see the Ken Burns "pan and zoom" effect in my slideshows. I find it annoying and dizzying!
Every time i create a new slideshow, this effect is on by default. I have to go into the settings selection for each slideshow, and un-check it. There appears to be no setting to automatically disable this. I even found a "SlideShowAutoPanAndZoom" setting in the .plist file, set it to "NO", but that doesn't stop the behavior.
Does anybody know if there's any way to do this?
    Thanks

I have a similar problem with music. Why does it
default to playing music and why can't you change the
    default? This is really annoying.
I too disliked the auto-music, but managed to find a "brute force" way to kill that. It ain't pretty, but it works:
    - create a silent MP3 file.
    - name it "Minuet in G.mp3" (which is iPhoto's default music choice);
    - store it over top of the existing minuet which lives in /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources/Music/

  • Help! ken burns/ old zoom in zoom out option

Hey any help is appreciated. I'm making a picture slideshow in imovie '09 and I'm not completely thrilled with having it fit to screen or the ken burns affect. Is there anyway to add a slight zoom in/ slight zoom out to the picture like there was in the old imovie? Please let me know any advice if you can i have to finish this movie by tomorrow! Thank you!

You don't say if you are editing standard definition DV-NTSC or HD, but I guess you are talking SD - both for your sequence setting and your TV set.
    Some comments:
    - any picture of any resolution will be converted to the sequence resolution (720x480 in DV-NTSC) when you edit the picture to the timeline. This means that quality will necessarily degrade; this cannot be avoided, but this is true also for iMovie. Motion bu itself should not further degrade quality.
    - it's important how you export your movie for iDVD: use Export/QuickTime Movie (not Using QuickTime Conversion).
    - as Ian suggests you may try de-interlace filter or the blur filter
    - I suggest you to watch the movie on your TV set during editing: connect the TV to your Mac firewire port: use a D/A converter (bridge) converting firewire connection to analog connection; you may use also a camcorder with pass-through. This allows you to check the movie quality as it will appear when watching the DVD: most important for stills and color corrections.
Note that the still in the viewer, before editing to the timeline, has the quality of the original still before its conversion to the sequence settings; so this is not meaningful.

  • How to get Ken Burns effect to zoom out so the whole pic is visible

I want to start or end with the full pic in view - just as the FIT command does.
Then I want Ken Burns to Zoom/pan to make it interesting.
But I can't figure out how to re-size the frame beyond the 4:3 (or whatever is restricting it) ratio.
Tried dragging the frame edges with CTRL, ALT, SHIFT, and COMMAND. Nothing seems to release the constraint.
    Thanks in advance.

I want to start or end with the full pic in view - just as the FIT command does.
If by "Fit" you mean the image exactly matches the display area, then you would have to "pre-crop" your scan to one of the available aspect ratios either before or after making your scan. If by "Fit" you mean "letterbox" or "pillar" views, then as Appleman said, you would have to either use the mentioned automator action or almost any graphic application. I prefer the manual approach so I can add a "text" area, frame, texture the background and/or image, and/or create other special effects.
But, how do I zoom the view out past the edges of the photo? If I press the FIT button in KB effect, it does it. But I loose the ability to zoom/pan... Unless there is some trick to getting KB effect to start or end with a FITted picture?
There isn't. iMovie '08 automatically scales the content to make the smallest dimension "fit within" the display area and, therefore, does not allow the "over-zoom" effect of "fitting" the larger dimension within the display area. You can however do this in iMovie HD. So if you want the "built-in" capability, this is a case where you should be using the the older application -- otherwise you will have to letterbox/pillar the content to get iMovie '08 to "Fit" your image as you wish.

  • How to manually zoom in using the Ken Burns effect

I love the way the Ken Burns effect zooms in on a photo. But it isn't optimally positioned on my photo. So I want to manually control this effect from start to finish of the duration. I understand how to slide left, right, top or down but its not obvious how to make it zoom in or out from start to finish. Can someone tell me how to do this.
    Thanks in advance.
    --Mickey

pick the photo in the slide show - click on the settings icon in the tool bar and on this slide - click on start next to Ken Burns at the bottom of the settings window and zoom the photo to the desired size using the zoom in the lower right hand corner and pan to the desired starting point by dragging - click end and do the same for the final position and you have it

  • Premier 12, Titles & Text, Current Time indicator, Pan & zoom

I am using Premier 12 and am really enjoying the program, I had been using Premier 8 and I am getting much fewer project crashes, in fact almost none! Whomever worked on this program did a really good job. I am also finding it very user friendly and have been using both the "quick" and the "expert" portions of the program. That said I have three questions,
Titles and text, I am using one with "scrolling credits", is there a function where I can either "freeze" the screen after it scrolls to the text OR is there a function to "replay" the text instead of just going "black" and stopping?
Also when I have added all of my clips onto the timeline and have my "curent time indicator" at the "end" it does not stop and "go back" to the beginning/home unless I manually hit the "home" on my keyboard. I want to make sure that when I go to burn that the movie will instantly go back to the beginning of the project.
Is is possible to do a type of "Ken Burns" panning and zooming with Premier 12 and if so how do you do it?
    Thanks

Good to learn of your progress with Premiere Elements 12.
    3. Is is possible to do a type of "Ken Burns" panning and zooming with Premier 12 and if so how do you do it?
The Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 Horizontal and Vertical Pan & Zoom choices in Presets are available in version 12 under fx Effects/Presets/. As in 8.0/8.0.1, in 12 it is either pan OR zoom applied to each clip, not pan AND zoom.
As in 8.0/8.0.1, in 12 there is the Motion Panel expanded and its Toggle Animation for doing more advanced pan and zoom effects. Here look to Applied Effects Tab/Applied Effects Palette/Motion Panel expanded for it Scale (for Zoom) and Position (Pan) properties.
The Pan and Zoom Tool is not found in version 8.0/8.0.1. It can be found in 12, Tools Menu/Pan and Zoom. The feature comes with its own workspace once you select the image and then the feature under Tools Menu. Note, when the panned and zoom image is returned to the Premiere Elements workspace from the Pan and Zoom workspace, the duration of the image is markedly increased. That is normal. Here is a sample of more information on the topic

I am not sure that you are dealing with leftover beyond the left gray tab of the Work Area Bar. So let us make sure.
After you have added all your clips to the Timeline, do the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar span that Timeline content from what you see as the beginning and end of the whole content? When you hit the play button of the monitor, does the Timeline content playback from beginning and end of what you can see as the beginning and end or does the Timeline Indicator continue beyond the last item that you put on the Timeline? If the latter, then you are some fragments further to the right of the end that you can see. Typically the present (with Timeline content expanded max) as very thin vertical black lines which will need to be deleted. In these cases, use the End key stop position to search for the leftover(s).
Other Home and End key to navigate the whole Timeline content under the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar.
Titles and text, I am using one with "scrolling credits", is there a function where I can either "freeze" the screen after it scrolls to the text OR is there a function to "replay" the text instead of just going "black" and stopping?
The basics of this feature should be the same as in Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1. Menu name is different and Titler has a different look but principles are the same between 8.0/8.0.1 and 12. Are you talking about looping a text title? Sounds like that. If so we can talk about that in greater detail. Have you done in 8.0/8.0.1 what you want to go in 12 in this regard? Or is this a new effect that you want to achieve?
Please review. Keep up the great work.

  • Ken Burn Problem in latest iMovie

I've just updated iMovie with the Mavericks update. When I create a ken burn on a photo it plays back jerky and not smooth as per the previous version.  Any ideas?
    I'm on a 2013 mac mini.

    Hi Hélène
Form iMovie's Menu, select "Edit > Select in iMovie > Photos". All photos in the project timeline will now be highlighted with a yellow border. Click on the Adjust button at the top right, just above the viewer. Now click on the Crop button that appears (along with other buttons/tools) below the Adjust button.
From the Crop panel that appears, click on Fit. All photos in the timeline should now remain static, that is, with no Ken Burns panning or zooming evident.

  • 'ken burns' poor quality interlacing jagged

This post is to document issues with 'Ken Burns' rendering in Final Cut Express 4 and some workarounds and possible bugs in software I found.
    Similar posts about this issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/5207261#5207261
When I import images into final cut express and  apply keyfram effects with panning and zooming a.ka. the 'Ken Burns Effect' I find that image quality is very poor. This occurs in most BUT NOT ALL images in viewer and canvas windows as well as rendered footage.  The video issues are severe interlacing artifacts (horizontal blurry lines) as well as motion jitter along edges.
Many other users on the web suggested the following, which did not work for me:
-Avoid using JPEG files because their compression introduces artifacts which causes problems for Final Cut
I have found both JPEG and TIFFs have trouble with Ken Burns, although I do have certain TIFFs that seem to work.
-Using different software to render ken burns panning.
This seems silly to me.  I find that the integration of  pan, zoom necessary for fine tuning during editing.  This would be extremely time consuming to separately generate each pan/zoom clip and import. I have heard that some software has high-end smoothing, but I am satisfied with the images that do pan and zoom correctly in Final cut.
-Adjusting Field Dominance in the clip properties to none
this was already set on my clips
    -Adjust render settings.
I saw a 1001 rendering 'recipes' offered up to fix image pan/zoom issues. None worked
    Things I discovered
Ken burns effect looked great when the image was in a transition, but bad when it was not.  For example: Imagine a 5 second cross dissolve between regular video and ken burns motion image.  When image becomes clearly visible in the latter 2.5 seconds of the transition it looks excellent while panning/zooming. When the transition finishes there is a sudden change to poor quality in the pan/zoom.
-The render bar on top of the timeline is dark-green for good-looking images, which according to the final cut manual, means 'no render necessary'
-There was nothing special about these render-not-necessary images that I could find in resolution, settings, etc.
-Good looking images were jpegs, gifs, and tiffs
I tried converting other images and reimporting, no luck
-I can make the ken burns look good for all images by playing the movie in the canvas window and setting it 99% zoom.
Any zoom level other than 100% looks good.
-This seems like a bug to me.
Eventually I just used a screen recording application called screenflow to capture my video playing in canvas window at 99% in real time.
    This worked.
Hopefully someone can explain why rendered images never look good and what format works to get the dark green line and avoid rendering all together and these problems.
I don't mind converting file formats beforehand as long as they work well

The render bar on top of the timeline is dark-green for good-looking images, which according to the final cut manual, means 'no render necessary'
This is misleading. It simply means rendering is not necessary for playback. It does NOT mean that the material does not need to be rendered.
100% zoom level is as close to how your video actually looks that a computer monitor can display.
You never said what format you're working in.
You always have to render still images. You're making video, and they're not video.

  • Importing photos & I dont want the ken burns effect

I want to import photos into imovie to make a slideshow like I used to in earlier versions of. However, when I import a photo now, it imports somewhat zoomed in and off center.
I do not use the Ken Burns effect, so it is not on.
Also I am doing a straight import from the folder. If I try this from iphoto the ken burns effect is turned off and I still have this problem.
Has anyone else experienced this with the new version of imovie?

Although it looks like a bug, Randy, it's actually not. It's how Ken Burns works in all versions of iMovie.
The Ken Burns checkbox ONLY controls whether or not the image is imported with an animated zoom or pan. The OTHER Ken Burns settings — the duration, the zoom and the pan — are ALWAYS in effect. Those settings affect the current import. And future imports too, until you change them.
If your image imports off center it's because the Ken Burns pan setting is currently set off center. To re-center it, turn ON the Ken Burns checkbox. Stop the preview. Click on the "Start" side of the Start/End thingy. Drag the zoom slider a bit to the right, then all the way left. Repeat for the End side of the thingy. Now the image is centered, and the zoom set to 1.00. Click Apply, so it sticks.
Notice you can drag the preview image off center. That's probably how it got changed in the first place. Usually one uses the zoom and pan in combination to crop an image. To show just the left side of the image, for example.

  • Ken Burns Effect - Variable vs. Constant Speed

On a test slideshow I worked on in iPhoto, I noticed that the Ken Burns effect uses a "variable" motion. Meaning if I'm utilizing the zoom effect, it'll start out slow, then speed up, then slow down again for each photo. However, I just want a constant speed zoom for each photo.
Is there away to have the Ken Burns effect zoom (and/or pan) with a constant speed?

100 brownie points to Terrabay! LOL
For those that don't know how Terrabay arrived at his solution: iMovie DOES let you dictate how long your transition (for ANY transition) is when you put it into your show. When you press editing and go into transitions drag the transition you want into your time line - you can adjust how long you want it to be and which direction you want it to go before you put it in your show, and if youve already put it in but want to lengthen/shorten it, just click on your transition in the time line, make the change and press UPDATE. Simple.

  • Can you Turn on the Ken Burns Motion Effect in IDVD?

I see several transition effects in iDVD, but I don't see the Ken Burns Pan Motion effect as seen in iPhoto. This effect makes a slide show almost look like a video. Great stuff. Is there a way to select Ken Burns Motion effect if you created a slide show in iDVD?
I can create a slide show in iPhoto with the Ken Burn effect and share it with iDVD. When I do this, it creates a new project in iDVD. If I have several slide shows in iPhoto and send them to iDVD, they create their separate projects. Is there a way to combine separate projects in iDVD. I've looked around the Forum and can't seem to find an answer. Thanks for your help to a new beginner.
    HJCW

You have to select each album and click on the PLAY button. This brings up a dialogue with all the settings. You don't actually have to play the slideshow, just click on "Save Settings".
I've since found out that you can shift-select multiple albums at and change their settings in one go. Wish I'd worked that one out before!
Like I said before: a central preferences setting for base slideshow settings would be nice!

  • Ken Burns on photos greater than 60 seconds?

I want to have one photo showing for the full 4:45 duration of a song with a slow, smooth, Ken Burns pan from beginning to end. Is there a way to do this? I tried on iMovie HD and iMovie '08 but can not find out how. It looks like to get greater than 60 seconds you have to import the photo 5 times (4 with a 60 sec duration and 1 with a 45 sec duration). How can you then apply a single Ken Burns effect across all 5 photos as if they were one photo? I tried to make a Podcast in GarageBand and there I could make the photo as long as I wanted with the music but there is no Ken Burns effect available there. I saved the podcast and then imported it into iMovie to apply the Ken Burns effect but it is not available to videos in iMovie, which it what the photo turns into after GarageBand saves it. Any help would be appreciated.

Is there a way to group the photos and apply a KBE across the grouping?
No. The KBE tool can currently only be applied to a single image.
If you are willing to trade quality for time in a Ken Burns Effect, you can always create a new iMovie HD project of the appropriate type/aspect ratio, bring in the photo, create the KBE at the length you want, export it to an iMovie '08 compatible compression format, and then import the file to iMovie '08. Just remember that iMovie HD handles photos at a lower resolution than iMovie '08 and the resulting loss in quality will probably be easy to see in comparison with other photos coming directly into iMovie '08.
    Karsten,
Those are beautiful effects. My complements! Will have to try doing more work with stills using pre-edits in Photoshop.

  • Pan and Zoom (Ken Burns Effect)

Does iDVD 06 support the Ken Burns Effect? When I import a Slide Show from iPhoto to iDVD it looses the transitions and the pan and zoom features. I can add the transitions back through iDVD, but I can't find anywhere to add the Ken Burns effect back to the slide show? Is it possible? I will be really disappointed if iDVD 06 does not support this feature.

    Welcome to iDVD Discussions.
I don't use iPhoto, so I can't help you with that, but I can tell you that iDVD does NOT have the KB Effect.

  • Customizing pan and zoom (Ken Burns) slide by slide -- help

    Here's where I am:
I've imported a bunch of photos into iMovie and they are happily sitting in the Photos Pane.
Here's what I want to do:
Photo-by-photo I want to customize the Ken Burns effect to change the zoom and panning behavior.
    Here's what I am doing:
I select the first photo and change the zoom and pan behavior to my liking...then go to the next photo and do the same, and so on and so on...
    Here's what's happening:
With each subsequent photo, the previous pan and zoom settings are all changed to be identical to the changes I most recently made (i.e. all my previous changes are "deleted" and now all the photos have the exact same settings).
What am I doing wrong? Thanks a bunch!

Sorry to make this such a messy thread! (I couldnt' find any way to edit my previous post, so I am creating a new one summarizing where I am and the problems I am experiencing). I'm about ready to throw my Mac through the
    window...heeeeeeelllpppppp meee.....sssoomebodyyyyy!
So, trying to summarize my issues:
I'm having a rash of problems using iMovie.
Here is what I am trying to do:
Using photos from iPhoto Albums, I wish to create a movie/slideshow with pan/zoom, transitions, and music ultimately for import into iDVD for burning on DVDs to be views on televisions and/or computers.
    Here's what I am doing:
    1. In the Photo Pan I have the photos I wish to use from an album.
    2. I select one photo at a time, adjusting the pan/zoom behavior and duration one at a time (I realize you dont have to do each separately, but I like to customize this behavior slide-by-slide).
    3. Click on Update after each, thereby landing it in the timeline.
    4. I then selected ALL in the timeline and chose a transition (cross fade) to be applied to all.
    5. Now I've gone back to change the pan/zoom and the length on selected slides.
    6. [This part's a little hard to describe since I think more than one thing is going on at once...] When I change the length of a slide, it recompiles the transitions on either side of it (which I understand) and when it's done, the slide durations of the slides on either side of it have been markedly shortened (like from 4 seconds down to less than 1 second). I'll then get an error message saying the transiton cant be applied to very short clips (which I understand)...
    7. So, I'll then go to one of the recently-shortened clips to lengthen it's duration...and then the process starts over again, with the clip before it getting really short.
    8. The same thing seems to happen if I delete the cross-fade transition and insert a different one...slide durations keeps changing radically.
In addition to solving the problem above, here's a couple more questions I have:
    1. What part of the process do you set the length of the clips? (I was thining of 4 seconds a piece, but that wasn't long enough to accomodate the 1 second cross fade)
    2. What order should I apply the various settings? (pan/zoom, duration, transitions...)
    3. Later, assuming everything is okay with the timing and transitions and KB, if i want to change one transition between two photos, I tried deleting the cross-fade, then adding a new transtion. But in the process of the timing of the two photos changed preventing the new transition from fitting...). How do I go about this?
Clearly, I'm missing something here. This is so unintuitave...driving me nuts.
Thanks a ton for any help you can provide.
