Kernal_task process

Hi ,
I am using Xserve - Dual-Core Intel Xeon (10.5.4). There is slowness issue in my server , after checking the process in Activity Monitor one Kernal_task process is taking 55% of my CPU load . As I have also installed the apache . After stopping the apache the CPU process goes normal to 0.8 % , and starting apaches again take CPU load to 55%.
So what could be the problem any hints please.

First guess, memory.
Amongst a slew of other things, the kernel is responsible for memory handling, including virtual memory, so if you're out of memory this could explain it.
You should also look at other processes that are related to the webserver, such as tomcat if you're running java web applications, databases if you're using dynamic content, etc.
Then there's always the logs - /var/log/system.log would be the one I'd start with. It's usually pretty good about recording system-level events that might be relevant.

  • Our MacbookPro began running very slow a few days ago. I ran disk repair, permissions repair, and restored the OS from the Apple server. Kernal_Task appears to be using excessive CPU.

I uninstalled all of the Intego products. I restarted the laptop, also ran disk repair and permissions repair again. Then allowed the machine to run with no apps active, just in case the OS was perfroming cleanup funtions. Results: No discernible improvement in performance. The kernal_task shows 500+% and the CPU graph shows 70%-80%.
There is one hardware issue: The magsafe battery port stopped charging the battery, so the laptop must be plugged in all the time.

  • MacBook Pro w 16GB & SSD slow; kernal_task using 4GB

I've got processor and memory issues with my MacBook Pro. I have 16GB of memory and an SSD drive.
Kernal_Task routinely uses 3 or 4GB of memory. And lots of times, various apps are pegging the processor, and my fans go crazy. Kernal_Task and WindowServer are the ones sys related that seem to show up most in Activity monitor for large processor usage. Especially WindowServer.
System used to scream. Something seems to have gone wrong.
I tried to delete the plist file named for my OS version in down in Library/extensions and in the contents of ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext under resources as per several posts here, but my system doesn't have that file.
Here's my EntreCheck report, I'd love any help or ideas.

I downloaded Mavericks when it first came out and it was no problem. Within the last week or so, my mac has become EXTREMELY slow.
    Solutions I have tried:
    -Resetting the PRAM/NVRAM
    -Resetting the SMC
-Backing up data with time machine and reinstalling Mavericks
Even while running a single chrome web page, I check the Activity Monitor and Kernal_Tasks is using anywhere from 76% to 1,000% cpu usage.
Here is a picture from Activity Monitor where Kernal_Tasks is using 76% cpu usage: <http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2ustudc&s=8>
Here is a picture from Activity Monitor where Kernal_Tasks is using over 1,000% cpu usage: <http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2zycrva&s=8#.U_0kTbxdUjw>
Keep in mind, these images were taken only while running a few pages in Chrome. I've searched around and a lot of people are having this problem, but there aren't really solutions going around.
EDIT: My internet is really fast, there's something wrong with my computer I think.
    Please someone help me

    Yes.
The most critical step is to ensure you have adequate backups of your essential files and software. Time Machine is one option, but it's an even better idea to create two separate backups using two separate devices, such as two USB drives. If you "clone" your existing system you can use Startup Manager to boot from the "clone", ensure all your essential files are intact.
Create a backup of your existing system, and verify that it is complete. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
Preferably, create two or more backups using different methods, such as one Time Machine and one "clone", for redundancy. Neither method is particularly advantageous over the other for this purpose.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files from the Time Machine or similar backup.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Mavericks read: OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks and follow the procedure under Time Machine or other disk migration.

  • Kernal_task running at 450% of CPU

    Hey everyone-
So the old Kernal_task taking up CPU problem.
I have read many posts about this!
I tried to uninstall the google updater- that seemed to work, but now I am VJing it does not work-
My kernel gets exited and just SWALLOWs my CPU- and I will suppress any double entendres right there...
really hoping to avoid a clean install of my system- though that may be the only option!
Unless smarty mac GURUs can help me here!

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • Kernal_task paralyzing my Macbook

Since I got a new Macbook Pro with Leopard (my old one was stolen), I restored everything with Time Machine. I didn't have this problem on my old machine, but now it seems that every few days the kernal_task task takes over my machine causing it to be very laggy. When it happens, it seems to be random and it stalls everything for about 5-10 seconds and the frequency of occurrence is also every 5-10 seconds. I checked the processes, and i can see that kernal_task jumps to 140-150% of CPU usage every time this event occurs. It seems my only solution has been to hard power-off and restart.
    any ideas?

I just saw in another thread (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=7266) that this behaviour has been seen before in relation to HP printer drivers. Thinking about it, I have just printed from my MacBook to a HP DeskJet printer I have shared via my eMac. This could have something to do with it...

  • Kernal_task takes me lot's of RAM

    Hi all
    I own a MacBook Air mid-2013 13" 128GB SSD and 4GB RAM.
I recently noticed that the 'kernal_task' takes me lot of RAM (700 MB)...
I would like to know what is 'kernal_task' and why does it takes me so much of my RAM?
    Thanks,
    Itay

Kernel_task is, as the name suggests, a fairly low-level and fundamental part of the OS. The kernel is the heart of the OS.
Mavericks is designed to use as much of your RAM as possible. Having loads of free RAM is not necessarily a Good Thing™.
There are advantanges to having a large kernel_task process. Mine is usually well over 1GB. The process includes some file caching, for instance.
In short: this is not a problem. Get on with your work.

  • Kernal_task acting strangely

When i'm watching activity monitor, i've noticed that the process kernal_task addds to its own real memory. When i open an application, and then completely quit that application, it seems that some of the memory used for that application gets added onto kernal_task. So over time, the amount of memory used slowly increses. It also just seems to accumulate memory over time as well.
I was wondering if this is some kind of bug in activity monitor, or if there is some way to fix it. There is absolutely no performance loss when activity monitor says there is more memory being used than previsoulsy (ie: when i boot the computer, its using about 20% of the memory, and when i come back later its using 50%)

It's not a bug and nothing to be concerned about. You're seeing dynamic memory management at work. AM is allocated to a variety of types of memory uses, which can change dynamically.
If you select the System Memory tab in Activity Monitor, then hover the mouse pointer for a moment over any of the words in the lower pane of Activity Monitor — e.g. "Wired" — you will see a help tag (little yellow box) explaining that term. See also "Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor."
There are cases where applications have memory leaks, i.e. where their memory is not released after use. However, these are generally rare. One notices them usually by rapidly decreasing memory either (a) when a given app is running or (b) when repeatedly launching, quitting, then relaunching the app with the memory leak.
    Good luck!R

  • Kernal_task 100% after wake up

hello my mbp battery went bad after i noticed that kernal_task using 100% of one of cpu core, that usually happens after it wake up from sleep. i searched for solutions but the problems still occoured so is this a bug of maverick? or did apple say anything about this? n other effective solution? thx

I'm not seeing anything, besides kernal_task, that is out of the ordinary.
Spotlight will show a dot in the center of the magnifying glass in your toolbar. If you click the magnifying glass, it will display information about how far along in the indexing process (if it is indeed indexing. If it isn't indexing, it will only display the search field)
I posited bad RAM because that might cause issues. I doubt it though. How large is your internal drive? At this point, I feel it has something to do with a bad migration. I would try to add a 2nd partition to your boot drive and do a clean install of Leopard on it (minimum install, you don't need to install printers, etc.) If your drive is large enough (at least 15 GB free), launch Disk Utility and select your boot disk (not volume, the boot disk will have some numbers beside it and not Macintosh HD.) Next click on the Partition Tab. On the left side of the Partition tab there is a graphic for the Volume Scheme, click on the little '+' sign on the lower left. You can drag the slider in the middle of the graphic to size the 2nd partition. Click Apply. Proceed to install OS X from your install disks to this 2nd partition. If the system performs normally on this 2nd partition, we know your primary OS has something in it that is causing problems. If it behaves the same as the primary, we probably have a hardware issue (I doubt this.) If the 2nd system works properly, I would get an external hard drive, clone your boot drive to the external using either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! (Boot the external clone to make sure it works) Re-partition and Erase your internal drive and do a clean install on your internal. You can then try to migrate your settings from the external at this point.
    Let me know...

  • Kernal_task real memory high (493.4 MB)

I'm having trouble trying to figure out why my kernal_task's real memory is so high (it fluctuates up and down around 493.4 MB). I booted my MBP in safe mode and checked my activity monitor and it was running about 201 MBs. Right now as I am typing this I have no external devices hooked into my computer except an external monitor but i'm pretty sure thats not the problem. My computer gets real hot, real quick and I don't know how to bring the kernal task's real memory back down to or below 200 MBs. CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE! It would be much appreciated thank you.

  • Kernal_task and Executor

    kernal_task and Executor
I noticed in 'activity monitor' that bouth of these items were using up a Gb (1001 and 1002 Mb) of virtual RAM and growing. They use 133 and 52 Real RAM.
All i have open is Mail and safari and Prosoft's databackup is copying (very slowly) files to a USB 2.0 Ximeta drive.
What are these things and is it normal to have them using so much virtual RAM?
I'm only 2 weeks into my first Mac so maybe this is nothing to worry about.
FWIW Databackup does tak a REALLY long time to load. and copying files on a 2.0 USB seems pretty slow too.
    Thanks
    Edd

does your kernal_task use so much virtual memory?
With USB drive unmounted and the prosoft databackup quit, both Executor and kernal_task have stablized to 999Mb.
this is what acitivity monitor says about executor:
    process id - 271
    Process Name - executor
    user - root
    %CPU - 0.2
    thread - 30
    Real - 52
    Virtual mem - 999
    Kind - intel
when i inspect it it says the parent process is 'sh (265)' and all stats are astronomical
inspect shows that sh's parent process is launchd
inspect shows that launchd's parent process is kernal task

  • Kernal_task running at 103%

Hoping there's some wisdom in the list...
    Machine: MacBook Pro, 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OS: 10.6.8
    HDD: Internal, Toshiba 250GB
Problem: just today, my MBP started running at 76 degrees, unusually hot on the touchpad and keyboard.
On inspecting Activity Monitor, found the Kernal to be running at over 100%.
I've tried rebooting. First reboot took 2 minutes on grey screen, and a further 8 minutes on blue screen before giving me the login window (10 mins in total).
When it did, oddly the trackpad setting had reverted to default, which was weird, and the kernal_task was still running at over 100%.
Did verify disk and repair permissions. Reboot. No change.
I tried a safe boot, which took 4 minutes to get me the login window. However, the keyboard refused to function, so I couldn't log in safe mode at all.
Rebooted in ordinary mode, same problems. I've tried quitting DropBox (a suggestion someone made elsewhere and all other Login processes, to no avail.
Stumped. Here's a screenshot from Terminal. Incidentally, on searching this problem I found someone suggesting 'nice-ing' the system. I've no idea what it means but the instructions on how to do it were clear; however, I then someone else in the same thread saying this was folly, so I'm steering clear of it. I'd appreciate any advice as to what that procedure actually does and what it's supposed to be used for (legitimately).
Another quesiton is my battery is down to around the 77% health mark, could this be anything to do with the problem (even though I'm running on mains power?)
    TIA for any help.

I'm beginning to think the battery is the cause of the problem, though why that should be so when its holding charge I don't know. However, I had the same 10-minute boot time and no keyboard input at the login screen again today when on battery power. When the mains is connected, it still taking extraordinary long time to boot (about seven to eight minutes) but seems to run fine apart from the heat and the +100% kernal_task.
I'm using SMC to keep the fan revs high and that seems to be keeping the heat to around 70C.
Yesterday I got a 'service battery' warning, then earlier today it read: condition normal and now its giving me 'service battery again.I'd had a replace battery warning about a month ago. Its on over 500 cycles, so I'm not complaining, but I still don't see why it should cause the machine to run hot  and the kernel_task to be over 100% (RAM, by the way, is not being used up). Any explanations out there?
Also will running it like this while I order a new battery cause any harm? Apple's support doc says no, but surely the heat and CPU usage can't be good?

  • Kernal_Task taking 5GBs, Maverick upgrade

    Hello,
If anyone might have some help for me. A couple of days ago, I upgraded my Macbook Pro (15in, early 2011) to Maverick.  Yesterday and today, my computer started running incredibly slowly (numerous pinwheels). I finally got an error message that I did not have enough memory to run MS Word and the computer crashed. I spoke with an Apple representative who led me through a NVRAM and PRAM resetting process. This seems to work for a couple minutes, but then after I open a few applications (Word seems to trigger things, but maybe it just takes some time), my kernal_task and mds processes rocket up in the the GBs. Kernal_task is running at 4.5 GB usually.  Nearly a year ago,  I had installed extra ram. I now have 8GBs which is being completely used as I type this. Fan running.
When I upgraded this computer to Mountain Lion I had a terrible time of it and was forced to do a clean reinstall. I'm wondering if this will be again the case. I have an external Time Machine back-up from immediately before the update.
I figure I will end up bring this to the Genius bar, but wanted to approach this on a couple fronts.
    Any advice?
    Thanks so much.

  • "Sudden s-l-o-w down of processing

OS: 10.4.11 Server, 2x3GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon.
Over the course of 24 hours our programs (all lengthy scripts kicking off a series of executables) dropped by a factor of 4 in clock time required to complete. Rebooting seems to pick things up momentarily and then the processing time drops off again. From watching the Activity Monitor (and using 'top'), the CPUs are getting hit only marginally, sometimes one pegs out at 100%. However, the machine load is at 3 to 4. The kernal_task seems high: rsize=663M . I don't seem to see anything in the logs that would indicate what happened during the 24 hour window in question (but I could have easily missed something.) I cannot see any (obvious) run away processes.
Any thoughts on what I can check to help me focus in on potential problem areas?

Per Gadfly and roam's queries about the hard rive and available space, you need at least 1 GB free space for the swap files used by any Unix-based OS (as is OS X), increasing that to 5+ GB if you burn CD/DVD discs and need space for thr burner software's temp files, increaasing beyond that if you use programs (e.g. Photoshop) that make heavy use of their own disc caches. If you're anywhere near those ballpark minimums, try removing any and all unneeded user data files, old .dmg installers, unwatched movies, etc. and empty the Trash to free up disc space. Also refer to Francine: A Miscellany of Mystifying Tiger Problems.
If you normally shut down an OS X Mac overnight or leave it in system sleep, the cron maintenance tasks cannot run in their nominal 3 am timeframe. (Display-only sleep allows the maintenance tasks to run). You can leave the Mac in display-only sleep a weekend or two a month; you can manually Force Background Maintenance; or you can use a third-party utility such as OnyX to run the maintenance. Note that any system utility you use must be compatible with the OS version (e.g., use the Tiger version of OnyX with 10.4.x).
The MacAttorney website roam linked has some very useful tips, as does Gulliver - OS X System maintenance.

For those that have looked at this post... I may have found the remedy to my issue.
I spoke with Apple Support and we went through the normal proceedure:
    1) Run Disk Utilities...check
    2) Delete cache files, reboot
The machine was still running high unless I disconected the ThunderBolt Monitor... it would then run normal. If I plugged it back in, eventually the kernal_task would go extremely high.
So, a thought came to mind,
    I had recently purchased a 27" iMac with a second 27" monitor,
So in talking with Apple we decided that changing out the monitor to the "new" 27" one would at lease confirm that the monitor is not the issue.
When I changed it out... my MBP worked perfectly!
Here is where it gets interesting...
I ran the MBP with the "new" monitor for enough time that it should have spiked the Kernal_Task. It didn't.
I then, because of the set up, disconected the "new" monitor and reconected the "original" monitor,
It has been over 24 hours now and the MBP has NOT had any Kernal_task spikes at all!!
So, at lease for me, the issue seems to be solved.
Now, I would like to know why.
Could connecting the "new" monitor have changed a setting that was corrupt within the MBP?
    Anyone with any ideas?
    Doug
