Kernel Panic Airport com.apple.driver.AirPortBrcm
Been getting a Kernel panic, same reasons in console. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?
PowerBook G4 17" 2003 model running 10.5.8 1GB Ram installed.
Does not happen when running direct into Ethernet, only when using Wifi
I have an AEBS, dual band, but I did set it to G only (in an effort to help route out the cause).

try this:
go into System Preferences, Network, Airport, delete those networks that your system remembered.
Go into Keychain and delete all Airport related keychains (be careful not to delete anything else)
Open Airport Utility and choose reset to factory and then go through and setup exactly like before (or making any changes you wanted).
Try this using the NEW AU that came out last week..

Kernel panic from com.apple.filesystems.afpfs
Looking back at my panic logs over the last two months, I have 15 kernel panics, 11 of which appear to be coming from com.apple.filesystems.afpfs. This appears to always happen when I mount a drive over AFP, am copying files, and the network connection gets disconnected somehow (system goes to sleep, disable wifi).
Help? I figure I can reduce the amount that this happens manually but a dropped AFP connection shouldn't be cause for a kernel panic.

System model name: MacBookPro5,1 (Mac-F42D86C8)I would suggest trying this.
First, repair your hard drive and permissions:
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next, clear system caches;
Boot into single-user mode. After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it. At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN after each commandline:
/sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
If you were successful then enter:
/sbin/mount -uw /
rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/*
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
rm -rf /Library/Caches/*
reboot
I suggest you print out the above to be sure you do not make any errors when entering the commands. When in single-uwer mode you have 'root' access, so it's important that you not make any mistakes.
See if the above helps. I would also suggest using Ethernet instead of wireless, if you can, to see if the problem is limited to the wireless side of the network.

Hi Everyone!
Over the last couple of days my MacBook performs a kernel panic and forces me to restart. I have to restart a couple of times before it works properly again, but sometimes the screen stays black when I turn it on, and it just sits there until I restart it again using the power button.
I've taken dump of the error message in panic.log and it appears that it is the AirPort card causing problems. Can someone confirm this, and suggest what I need to do to resolve this issue as it is becoming quite annoying now. I bought my MacBook back in October last year, so it should still be under warranty.
Heres the relevent content of the panic.log:

Darwin Kernel Version 8.9.1: Thu Feb 22 20:55:00 PST 2007; root:xnu-792.18.15~1/RELEASE_I386Hey boys and girls...
Well, after reading a few of the posts, I can say this:
1. I have the N activated from the factory- This is a week old macbook. (Utilities/Network Utility, choose en1 from the dropdown - if you see (802.11 a/b/g/n), you have n installed)
2. The ONLY airport driver loaded into the kernel is atheros, meaning it MUST be the active driver. See kextstat -l | grep -i airport
3. I have been monkeying with replacing extensions from previous versions. So far, I have not had a wifi dropout or kernel panic... BUT IT'S EARLY IN MY TESTING.
Here's how I replaced the extension. This is taken directly from a macfixit tutorial. NOTE: 10.4.9 still produced a wifi lockup. I have now used the airport kext (I chose all I found) in 10.4.8 and SO FAR (only tonight) I have not had a dropout. IT COULD STILL HAPPEN THOUGH, SO YMMV:
Reverting to older AirPort kernel extensions [Useful for: slow wireless throughput, router not recognized]
f you are experiencing dire AirPort connectivity issues after a major system update (incremental Mac OS X update or Security Update), and have exhausted all other workarounds, you can try reverting to older version of the AirPort kernel extension via the following steps: [WARNING: This workaround is risky because you should not generally mix and match kernel extensions after updates. You will also lose any AirPort-related refinements brought about by the most recent update and new conflicts can ensue. Still, in a bind, it can restore wireless connectivity where other workarounds fail.]
1. Download the Mac OS X combo updater directly precedent to your current system version if you applied an incremental Mac OS X update (e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.9), or your current system version if you applied a security update from Apple's download page.
2. Download and install the shareware application Pacifist
3. Drag the Mac OS X combo installer package (e.g. MacOSXUpd10.4.9Intel.pkg) onto the Pacifist application icon.
4. Click the triangle next to System to expand it
5. Click the triangle next to Library to expand it
6. Click the triangle next to Extensions to expand it
7. Scroll down and find the file AppleAirPort.kext. Drag it to your Desktop or another location (you will have to enter your administrator password)
8. On your Mac OS X startup drive, navigate to /System/Library/Extensions and locate a similarly named file (AppleAirPort.kext). Move it to another location for safe keeping.
9. Now drag the file from step 7 (the one that you retrieved from the Mac OS X combo install package) into the /System/Library/Extensions directory on your startup, in effect replacing the newer file (installed by the AirPort updater) with and older copy -- you will have to enter an administrator password.
10. Restart your Mac

Com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform(1.6) Kernel Panic?
Hi everyone,
I recently updated my 2008 Aluminium MB (2GHz C2D, 4GB Ram) to 10.8. Since then I have had KP reboots several times a day. Attached below problem report.
I have tried resetting NVRAM, updating to 10.8.2 but doesnt help. Can anyone help?
I hope a complete reformat will resolve the problem rather than being a hardware issue?

I have tried resetting NVRAM, updating to 10.8.2 but doesnt help. Can anyone help?
I hope a complete reformat will resolve the problem rather than being a hardware issue?

Lion, MPB, Kernel Panic, com.apple.driver.CoreStorage
Greetings
I started to get Kernel Panics (2 today). I pasted in the last one.
The last one happened while Time Machine was running and Spotlight did indexing.
I cannot say for sure that this was the case when the first kernel panic was thrown but I presume it was.
CPU was pretty busy both times and the fans running full speed.
Anyone any thoughts on what's going on here?
Thanks & Regards,
Stefan

com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily 1.4com.sophos.kext.sav - do you use some AV scanner?
if it is set up to block access to infected files and you have some of them somewhere in downloads or mail attachments - it can try to block spotlight and/or time machine access - thus probably causing deadlock in storage subsystem.
Do you know that for now the only malware for Mac is cured by mac os itself? (there was appropriate update)
all known to me Mac antivirus software scans for Windows viruses, which are of no harm to you.
Anyway, boot from DVD and repair HD
otherwise may be one of your's mounted media is dying - try to see smart status for it, espesially bad blocks remapped
trying to read from scratched DVD wery rarely can cause KP also

But you mention in your title that you suspect the AirPort is causing this. Have you tried removing the card to see if the panics stop? Also, and I know this sounds silly, but do you have at least 10% of your hard drive free? -

I discussed the problem with the local Apple Repair Centre who advised reinstalling 10.5.1, as suggested by baltwo, before bringing the machine in for repair. I did this and everything seemed OK. It has been running backups for 10 days now without a problem.

My mac has a "Kernel Panic" screen come up on start up. No matter what I try I can't get past this to fix it. Any hints out there? Do I have to completely wipe my drive and re-install to fix this? I can't even back up my files before doing this as like I say I can't get past the Kernel Panic message.
There are some fairly informative articles about kernel panics...
•OS X: About kernel panics:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Note the toggle triangles to get more info in the above article, some are
important steps, with alternative methods of accessing or performing a
suggested activity and may vary with the OS X version in use.
•Resolving Kernel Panics:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
•Technical Note: TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics:
https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/technotes/tn2063/_index.html
The above TN covers several technical aspects to identify & troubleshoot.
Some are above the average user needs, but still can be rather helpful.
Hopefully you can get past the kernel panic screen, there are several
ways to attempt to do that, however if the issue is hardware, a reinstall
of the OS X may not cure the underlying cause of the symptom.
Good luck & happy computing! -
Repeated panics in com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000, after installing Snow Leopard
Hi,
now for the 4th time around, I got a kernel panic with backtraces pointing to the com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000 driver. The previous 4 times it crashed while beeing fully idle, today it crashed while I was using the box.
The box in this case is a Mac Pro (Early 2008), with 2 ATI Radeon HD2600XT cards driving 3 displays. Everything is running on a powerfull UPS.
In early April I reinstalled the box on a SSD drive, and at the same time I upgradeded from 10.5 to 10.6 (Snow Leopard). About two-three weeks later (12th Apr) the first crash came, and then about a month later (20th May) again. Then 16th June, and now today, 27th June..
Here is each panic:

As mentioned, the only change introduced to the system is the SSD, and Snow Leopard instead of old Leopard. Before the change, I've never seen this crash a single time. A few panics maybe, but nothing related to this. I don't think blaming the SSD would be fair, if that would be the case much more random traces would be expected.
I'd say that this is a bad bug in the com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000 module.
Apple, any fixes for this? Update for SL or will it be addressed in Lion?
Anyone else seen similar crashes in this scenario? Thanks Tom but the original post title was "Work in DTP, don't install snow leopard", but of course apple were unhappy with the title. I know the issue/problem has been discussed for months, the real problem is that it shouldn't be a problem which everyone has to find work arounds for.
After 4 days of playing about, I've finally got flash CS4 working and Quarkxpress was also a big problem for a few months. Printer description (PPD) files which snow leopard doesn't like, but worked in tiger & leopard.....means I can't use my two A3 inkjets for proofing anymore.
I'm just disappointed by snow leopard -
Kernel Panic when using USB Drive
This post originally started in the Time Machine topic but it now seems to be a basic issue with the USB i/f.
I am using a iMac IntelC2D to backup to a Seagate FreeAgent 750 USB drive. Everything has been working OK but just recently I have been suffering crashes every time Time Machine runs. I have reset PRAM but the problem persists. I have tested the backup volume on another machine running OS X 10.5.1 and it works OK. Testing with a different USB drive on the iMac causes the same problem. The hard drive itself is therefore OK. It seems to be a problem with the USB i/f on the iMac.
These are a couple of the crash reports which point to com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement
Is this a H/W problem? Suggestions are invited.

This is a repeatable problem on the iMac.Just as final note on this topic. I discussed the problem with the local Apple Repair Centre who advised reinstalling 10.5.1, as suggested by baltwo, before bringing the machine in for repair. I did this and everything seemed OK. It has been running backups for 10 days now without a problem.

Kernel panics with external Apple modem
This question has been raised before, but I'm revisiting it in hopes someone may have found a solution.
I'm getting frequent freezes and failures to awake from sleep, and a number of kernel panics that always implicate the faxmodem:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.driver.AppleSM56KUSBAudio(1.9.14)@0x6d364000->0x6d37efff

com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(3.1.5)@0x602000->0x629fff
When the USB modem is not connected I do not get these KPs.
Apparently there is a firmware conflict between this old Apple modem (I bought it for another machine in 2006) and Intel-based duo-core machines. The Apple Store people tell me the newest Apple USB modems are the same, that is, they have not been updated.
Any ideas? Do I have to buy another fax modem? I just use it for faxes.
Thanks.Greetings.
I'm having the same problem as Beanfield. I'm using a MX620 Logitech Wireless Laser Mouse, and it produces several problems under Mac OS X 10.4.10. The micro receiver is plugged to the rear of my iMac Intel Dual Core and altough I've switched it to the USB ports of my Apple Keyboard it still happens. The Kernel Panics (with the Grey Screen of Death) happen mostly when the mouse awakes the computer. Very often, when right clicking or single clicking items, the menus appear and disappear. Dragging items becomes impossible and even after restarting the iMac the problem persists.
It also interfers with the keyboard: sometimes the cursor blinks when moving and when I press any key on the keyboard, it resumes its normal activity. Recently I've added 1 G of RAM, but I've excluded it from the problem since it worked normaly with my now defunt Mighty Mouse. Also, I bought a 500 G Lacie external drive that works very well.
I'm getting very frustrated since this problems began only a few weeks after my purchases, which took in account full compatibility with my system. All drivers are correctly installed so...what's happening?
Best Regards

Kernel panics w/Firewire CD drive
Hi. I'm running a 500MHz TiBook, with OS X, 10.4.3. Ever since the last security update (the large one that came out on the 29th, I believe) I've been getting kernel panics. They seem to be tied into my older FireWire CD burner. Whenever I start up my computer with it connected, the computer starts up and immediatly goes to kernel panic. When I plug it into my laptop, it does the same thing. I've tried every combination of devices I can, it pretty much always happens. (I've managed to get it to work twice, but nothing was different.) Had absolutely no problems with the burner before the update, and it still works on my roomate's G4 Powermac running Panther. Other firewire devices all run perfectly normal on my laptop.
The CD burner is a QPS bran Que!Fire CDRW 4x4x24.
I've searched on these forums and elsewhere, and haven't found very much that applies to my situation, and the few things I have found don't work. I'm probably just searching on the wrong terms.
I pulled up the panic log from Console. It follows below. If anyone's got any leads or ideas, that'd be great. I'm still trying to contact QPS. It was suggested I redo the firmware on the CD drive using another computer; Que's website gives a dead link to a forum. When I tracked that site down, they didn't have what was needed. So yeah, any help is much appreciated! thanks!
J. Pierce

500 MHz TiBook Mac OS X (10.4.3)Hi J.P.,
Your panic log is definitely flagging the kernel extensions for the FireWire burner:"Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.driver.QPSQueFire(1.4.4)@0x328f2000"so that is clearly the problem. The version shown (1.4.4) is the most current version. Unless the kernel extension itself has become corrupted, something in the security update may have rendered that driver incompatible with Mac OS X.
This is something you want to take up with Que before proceeding further. If they've had similar reports, they might release a new kernel extension. Otherwise, you're faced with trying to reinstall that kernel extension from an identical copy of Tiger or performing an Archive and Install.
Good luck!

Kernel Panic: Unable to find driver for this platform
So, my 1 GM RM, 1.5 GHz Powerbook G4 (15 inches) has been behaving wonderfully lately. Until, this morning, it locked up -- as it sometimes does -- after inserting a 3rd party SATA card and waking it from sleep.
This is normally not a problem. A reboot gets things back on track. Not today. The reboot stayed on the grey screen with the white apple logo. I tried booting off of a Disk Warrior CD and an OS X 10.4 install DVD. I go this kernel panic:
Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook5,6".
But...and here's the best part...if I boot into target disk mode and hook the computer up to another similar Powerbook we have, the similar PowerBook boots fine using my drive.
So, it seems to be a hardware problem with my PowerBook. Any ideas on how I narrow it down?
Thanks,
GaryGlad you found your problem. Our kernel panic on our 15" G4 is a bad logic board. $500+ to fix it. Just found out yesterday.

IMac won't boot - Failed to load extension com.apple.driver.applemacriscAGP
Hello, so I have an iMac G4 17" (running 10.4) and it was unfortunately not connected to a very good surge protector. The power surged and a fuse blew and now when I try starting it up it chimes and then just sits at the gray screen with the apple logo. Here's what I've tried:
Booting into verbose and single-user modes, this is what happens:
Failed to load extension com.apple.driver.applemacriscPCI
Couldn't alloc class AGP
Still waiting for root device
Still waiting for root device
Still waiting for root device etc.
Booting into Open firmware mode:
I'm able to do everything just fine, including resetting the nvram
Resetting PRAM:
Works fine, chimes when appropriate
Starting from Tiger install DVD:
Works just fine, I'm able to access all the utilities and was able to copy files off to a flash drive with the terminal. I used Disk Utility to repair the drive and repair the permissions, both of which ran successfully. I did a clean install of Tiger and then repaired the drive and permissions. I selected the new install on the hard drive as the default start-up disk. Still it sits at the gray screen and I still get those same errors in Verbose and Single-User modes.
I found the source code (a cpp file) for the com.apple.driver.applemacriscPCI, but don't really know how to compile it and what headers are necessary etc, and even if I did I don't know where I would put it since the problem can't be on the hard drive after I did a clean install. I have not yet tried completely reformatting the drive before an install but doesn't the installer do that anyway?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Message was edited by: Yost SmithThere may be some circuit damage in the computer; due to the surge of power.
Sometimes, a computer and its owner get lucky and when a surge disables a
Macintosh, a reset of the Power Management Unit (PMU) can help restore the
normal functions. Often, when this works, the computer may not go past the
grey screen at all, until the PMU is reset.
Instead of a simple surge protector, my computers are powered through a
backup power supply; an uninterruptable power unit with battery backup.
These also have automatic voltage regulation. Forget common protectors!
On the iMac G4 series, the PMU reset button is under the metal plate on the
bottom and is hard to see. There may be instructions with images available
online, perhaps in Apple Support's knowledge-base. This would also be in
the official service manual in pdf electronic documentation, for a tech repair.
How to reset PMU in iMac G4:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1712
You may have to see if the Apple Hardware Test can show error codes and
other hints of hardware damages; and perhaps a tech visit is not far off...
Good luck & happy computing!

1 Kernel Panic Fix - Downgrade Motu Driver
Just wanted to add a topic to the forums to let people know about an issue I've discovered with the audio drivers from MOTU.
It seems as though their latest driver update (1.4.7) for any of the firewire consoles (entitled - *MOTU 828/896/828mk2/896HD/Traveler - 1.4.7*) is not compatible with OS 10.4.x Tiger. After installing this driver the system may have a classic kernel panic after a restart.
All you need to do is un-install version 1.4.7 of the driver and download + install version 1.4.1 available here
Hope this helps anyone with a similar issue. It seems a common cause for kernel panics is an incompatible driver for 3rd party hardware. Thanks for the tip.
