Kernel Panic!!! Can't find modules.dep
Hello, everybody,
Yesterday I followed the Kernel Compilation From Source topic on arch's wiki. So i did:
wget -c http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6 … 31.tar.bz2 (not 2.6.28)
cp linux-2.6.31.tar.bz2 ~/kernelbuild/
cd ~/kernelbuild
tar -xvjf linux-2.6.31.tar.bz2
cd ~/kernelbuild/linux-2.6.31
make mrproper
make menuconfig
I didn't change nothing in menuconfig.
So I created PKGBUILD and kernel26.install
makepkg -c
pacman -U kernel26-my-2.6.31.5-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
Everything with no problems. Except for one thing. When I did "pacman -U kernel26-my-2.6.31.5-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz" it returned conflicts with: vmlinuz26.img and *.map (I don't remember the names, the first it something like vmlinuz26.img but the second I only remember the extension *.map, I problably can remember if i see the names again). So I deleted these 2 files (I thought the new kernel would create these 2 files again). After delete them, I runned again "pacman -U kernel26-my-2.6.31.5-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz", now with no erros. I restarted and BOOM!!!
When I start appears the ERROR: could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31/modules.dep: file not found
But I started from my Ubuntu and I can see modules.dep there. Maybe, it is searching in the /boot directory, instead the /
What I must to do now? Is there a way to recover the old kernel? I think I made a backup. But I don't know how to access it, because my Ubuntu can't (only the owner can) and I don't how to use the live cd, because I know the Ubuntu-like live cd, but I can't find a live cd for Arch. So, is there a way to solve the problem? Please, reinstall Arch is the last option.
----------- EDIT ---------------
Maybe I have to configure my bootloader (GRUB). But how do I do that?

Actually, turns out I was reading that when you posted.
Here's where I'm stuck.
After mounting proc, sys, and dev I did the mkinitcpio but now I receive:
ERROR: '/lib/modules/3.0-ARCH/' is not a valid kernel module directory
Which is accurate, because my /lib/modules is 3.3.4-1-ARCH.
So I checked for what could be setting that incorrectly with
grep -r "3.0-ARCH"
Only thing I found was in etc/mkinitcpio.d/exmple.preset
But even in that file the line is commented out with #fallback_kver="3.0-ARCH".
I didn't think I was using any defaults since I specify the -c command to mkinitcpio.
Where is it getting this 3.0-ARCH kernel version from?

Modprobe can't find modules.dep
Hi
I lately compiled new kernel and I get this error during booting:
modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.24-tuxonice-r9/modules.dep: No such file or directory
modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.24-tuxonice-r9/modules.dep: No such file or directory
despite file exist.
After booting everything works fine. I try depmod -a and mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernelversion.img but still the same.
How to get rid of this error?Gcool wrote:Have a read through this.

Mountain Lion - endless kernel panics - can anyone diagnose?
Been having issues with Kernel Panics since Mountain Lion came out. I downloaded and installed a few months ago and got Kernel panics, so I formatted and sent to apple and they replaced the RAM, which did absolutely nothing. So I went backwards to Snow Leopard, and then recently came back now that we're on 10.8.2 to use Mountain Lion and I am still getting kernel panics. Can anyone diagnose where I could begin as far as removing software, etc, from this kernel panic? I'm pretty comp savvy but the kernel panic appears an endless stream of nonsense to me:
PS: You will notice in this kernel panic I have some FireWire audio interface connected. Just to be clear, this kernel panic can come with or without any periphreals plugged in

Kernel Panic: Unable to find driver for this platform
So, my 1 GM RM, 1.5 GHz Powerbook G4 (15 inches) has been behaving wonderfully lately. Until, this morning, it locked up -- as it sometimes does -- after inserting a 3rd party SATA card and waking it from sleep.
This is normally not a problem. A reboot gets things back on track. Not today. The reboot stayed on the grey screen with the white apple logo. I tried booting off of a Disk Warrior CD and an OS X 10.4 install DVD. I go this kernel panic:
Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook5,6".
But...and here's the best part...if I boot into target disk mode and hook the computer up to another similar Powerbook we have, the similar PowerBook boots fine using my drive.
So, it seems to be a hardware problem with my PowerBook. Any ideas on how I narrow it down?
Thanks,
GaryGlad you found your problem. Our kernel panic on our 15" G4 is a bad logic board. $500+ to fix it. Just found out yesterday.

[Solved] Kernel 2.6.31 cannot find "modules.dep"
After upgrading to default x86_64 kernel 2.6.31-ARCH with no error messages, I get this during reboot:
"Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/modules.dep"
Well, no wonder, as there is no 2.6.30-ARCH directory, only 2.6.31-ARCH. I have tried "mkinitcpio -p kernel26", but it didn't help any (naturally).
Is there an easy fix for this?

It is not so surprising if I overlooked it... However, I cannot recall seeing such a warning? I am in the habit of copying both pacman's package install msgs and boot console msgs, but I don't think I have ever seen a warning about the /boot partition not being mounted.
Dieter@be wrote:It is remarkable however, I don't remember ever having an issue like this, do you? It looks to me like something changed, I looked at the sources for kernel26 but couldn't find anything special.
During the 18 months I have used Arch I have received a faulty kernel twice. On both occasions the problem was another than this /boot partition issue. I have never had the /boot partition uncommented in fstab while using Arch, so something must have changed, or there is a new bug in the kernel code somewhere. It is significant that this only appears with the 2.6.31 kernel.
I have EXT3 on my boot partition, and I use this ending in fstab "defaults 0 1". Is it safe?
BTW - with "vga=773 nomodeset" in GRUB, graphics, incl. MPlayer etc., seem to be back to normal - in fact better than before, as I am now getting full repaints in OOo Calc! Of course, since I am not into gaming, I don't know if there is some other functionality missing...
Thanks again, Dieter - I will mark this thread solved! -
Kernel Panic. Help finding out the reason.
Hi guys. Last couple months I have been experiencing constant restarts on my macbook air. Some times it works perfectly, but there are days when it reboots 10-15 per hour! I tried everything, exept of taking it to applecare. Look at the report I copied and tell me if you can find something out of it. Thank you very much peeps.

Kernel Panic - Can anyone help decipher this?
Second Kernel Panic in just over a week. I wish I knew how to decipher these logs.
Can anyone help me understand these two short logs?
I see the name Keyspan in the backtrace of both logs. Keyspan is the company that makes a USB server which allows me to connect and access two USB printers on my network. I use that because I have two workstations that need to use those printers.
The latest panic occurred when attempting to print but after noticing the Keyspan print dialog read: Printer not connected. I checked the cables and then saw the panic.
Keyspan was a good company that was bought by Tripplite who doesn't appear to give a hoot about Mac and will therefore NOT make driver updates.
Bad driver?
Thanks,
Jeff

There are no Mac viruses in the wild.
ClamXav might be causing some of the problems... try deleting ClamXav and see if the kernel panics persist. You can always reinstall it. Anti virus software on a Mac tends to cause more problems then it's worth. -
Kernel panic caused by Nvidia module?
Since kernel 3.6 I have often kernel panics, today I managed watch made this problem, I run on x server 6x glxgears and switch back to console, I got this:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/166 … 133329.jpg
I have tested my hardware with memtest86, hd tune on windows, no problems. And on win I run funmark for ~2h the GPU gets only 68C hot and runs stable. So it is a software problem, not a hardware issue. I have tested nvidia-beta, it is more stable but the problem still exist, just doesn't appear so often. My hardware:

EDIT
Second I forget to add I am having problem with nvidia-settings too, after I boot system I can only run it once, when I closed it won't run again, just hangs and I can only kill it.
Last edited by dragonn (2013-04-27 14:14:18)Hmm I am not 100% sure that nvidia module made this problem. I have attached a better panic screenshoot, now it doesn't show anything about nvidia:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/166 … 174954.jpg
Now I am testing kernel with acpi=noirq.

Predictable pattern of kernel panics - can you interpret a panic report?
Hi. Long time listener, first time caller.
I installed 10.5 on my PB as soon as it became available and have had an issue with kernel panics ever since. The panics arrive in waves of ~12-15 at a time over the two to three days (~36-48 hours of uptime) immediately subsequent to my having booted from a volume other than the 10.5.2 system on my PB's internal HD. When the panics have run their course, everything returns to normal, and no problems of any kind arise until after I've temporarily booted into another volume.
I have experienced these waves of kps after booting from a 10.5.2 volume on an external drive; two different 10.4.11 volumes on two different external drives; the 10.5 retail install disc; a brand new DiskWarrior 4.1 CD, and the AHT volume on the (replacement) Install and Restore disc that came with my computer. (None of the utilities I've used to attempt diagnose my issue have returned any errors or warnings about the state of my hardware \[incl. RAM and AEBS] or my main boot volume.)
I've attached the latest panic report below. It is identical to all of my PanicReporter entries for the past 6 months. I can see that this may be AirPort (driver) related, but if you can offer a more incisive reading of the report than that, I'm definitely interested in what you have to say.

Thank you.Because this post contains information that may be useful to others later on, I will not ask that it be removed as I have some of your previous posts in this topic.
Notes:
Panics do indeed occur in various situations, but as you suggest, I cannot at every moment account for the status of background processes. As I've said, however, the data in the panic reports I have amassed over the past six months are (virtually) identical. And as I pointed out more than once, these spates of panics occur in predictable, repeatable cycles.
AHT in Extended, loop mode over 24 hours has not detected a RAM issue, though I am aware that this does not necessarily rule a RAM issue out.
As mentioned above, neither DU's Disk Repair nor DiskWarrior have solved this issue.
No data was transferred to this present installation via TDM or Migration Assistant. It was an E&I onto a freshly formatted volume. There is very little third-party software installed (BBEdit; CSSEdit; an FTP client and various browsers). Other major third-party software exists on 10.4.11 volumes because I am too cheap to upgrade many of these products when older versions still work well in the previous OS.
There is no third-party hardware attached to this machine beyond a variety of HDs (all OWC; Hitachi), and there is no firmware to update for any other peripherals being used, however sporadically.
This problem has presented itself through a variety of installation options, including a simple upgrade from 10.4.10; an A&I over a 10.4.10 volume; E&Is both using and not using Migration Assistant (with A&Is following both), and cloning an E&I on an external volume back to a newly formatted volume on my PB.
Could be the RAM, but the symptoms (and the log files) tell me that more likely it's an I/O issue having something to do with AirPort, which brings you and I full circle, I guess.

Mac Pro Kernel Panic - can't restart
had kernel panic and shut down using the power button. Now I can't get it to start up again at all. Just the fan noise and a black screen and the power light flashes - help!

Kernel Panic - can't start in Safe Mode or from OS Install disc
Can anyone help me ?,
Here's what happens :
1. I press the power button to switch on
2. The usual grey screen with the apple logo appears but after a few seconds it is replaced by a darker grey/black screen with a message in the centre saying something like 'you need to restart your computer, press restart or press and hold the power button for a few seconds' in several languages(I believe that this is indicates a Kernel Panic)
3. Powering down as per the instruction just results in the same message appearing when I switch on again......
I've looked at numerous suggested solutions, here and elsewhere - the problem is that they all start with either:
...start your machine in Safe Mode...
Or
...start your machine from the OS disc...
and I have been unable to do either (the same panic screen just reappears each time)
I've also tried starting in Single User Mode and typing mount uw / (step 1 of another suggested solution) - again it simply hangs after returning a few lines of text...
I have a G4 iMac with superdrive and have recently installed OSX 10.4
Any suggestions you can offer would be gratefully received!Hello going:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
One suggestion - if you have third party memory installed, remove it and see if the problem goes away. If it does not and you cannot start from the software install DVD, you will need to take your computer to either an Apple store or to an Apple certified repair facility for diagnosis. Kernel panics may be caused by either hardware or software, but if you cannot start from your install DVD, no further "repair" operations would be possible.

Kernel Panic Can someone pls explain
Hi there everyone;
Yesterday I got kernel panic (which reminded me of Windows days some 8 months back). The report from the log is below and I have spent some time on this forum and others so I know if it happens I need to do many things to determine the cause, but I was wondering if some of the very skilled people here could have a look at the report from my iMac and tell me if they see any clues as to what might have caused it.

If it is of any importance, the Mac was running fine till Fri when I turned it off as I left for the weekend. I completely unplugged it from electricity as all the other peripherals (WD Studio 1TB attached through Firewire; speakers, HP all in one printer). Upon return I turned it on and all went nice except the WD external HD did not boot, so I had to play with it a bit, plug it in and unplug it untill it kicked in. Then I worked on some pictures in Aperture, started Vuze to download some files and then the curtain came down with the Kernel Panic info.
Thank you for any commentsThanx for the tip, I will try it. In the mean time I got another one:

Right before it happened Time Machine failed to finish back up to Time Capsule wirelessly " due to network problems"; again I was downloading stuff through Vuze and my external WD Studio 1TB was all lit up (which is unusual). For now I have disconnected the external HD.
Can anyone tell from the reports what might cause this? -
Repeating kernel panics - can you see something in the logs?
Hi there,
I have been experiencing multiple kernel panics alerts. These happen either on boot, when computer is idle, or even when browsing the web with Safari.
I am attaching recent panic logs.
Hope someone can figure out what is happening here...
Appreciate your help,
Ronen

Kernel panic, can't start with install disc or safe mode
Two days ago my 2008 Mac Pro got a green screen that froze up the entire system. After a few minutes I decided to force power down by holding the power button. Since then I receive a kernel panic every time I boot up in Mac OS.
I run bootcamp and I'm able to boot up Vista 32 bit okay. After the system went down my video card, NVidia 8800GT, was no longer being loaded in Windows due to and error (43). I tried installing old drivers, new drivers, and today I finally bought a new video card, NVidia GTX 285 Mac. The new card works great in Windows, but I'm still unable to load up Mac OS.
I've tried resetting the PRAM. I've also tried booting up off of the 10.5 install disc to try a fresh install, but I get kernel panics even when I do that. I connected the Mac to another Mac using target disc mode and using Verify Disk it detected no errors. I used the Apple Hardware Test and again the Mac detected no problems. I've reseated the RAM in the cpu and disconnected all usb and firewire devices. I've called Apple support and they told me to do all of these things I just mentioned. After all of that I even tried erasing the Mac HD partion of the hard drive thinking that it might erase a problematic file or at least let me do an install on a fresh drive (thankfully I made an exteral backup of all my Mac files when I had it in target disk mode). I'm at a loss of what else to try other than taking it into a mechanic. Has anyone experienced this before or have any ideas?Your OS X system sounds hosed. However, getting a kernel panic trying to start from an installer disc is usually a good sign of hardware failure. If you aren't using the original installer disc that came with the computer, then that could be a problem - wrong version for the machine. Or the installer disc itself is defective.
If your Boot Camp partition is on a different drive, then I'd suspect the hard drive but you believe it's OK. This could be a problem with RAM. However, I would look for another suitable installer disc you can try that boots the same version of OS X that was installed originally on your machine.
