My macbook from 2008 which I bought used worked fine for 3 weeks and then suddenly it started restarting and now it restarts, goes to grey apple screen and a code saying something about a kernel panic appears and it restarts again and again. Help?

Restart the computer and immediately hold the Option key down.
Select the Recovery partition and continue.
On the next pane, select Disk Utility and continue.
When DU opens, select your hard drive in the left column, click the First Aid tab, the click Repair Disk.
When that is done, quit DU and restart in the usual way.

The kexts don't seem to referenciate any third party software. It looks like I've problems with the GPU and/or iPhoto, but I don't understand this kind of things properly. I must point here that, before the update, I don't have any problemas at all. Also, I've seen in the support forums that there are bugs on Nvidia graphic cards in Mountain Lion. So... my questions are: a) Is this some kind of bug? b) Can I do something to solve this issue (I've already checked Activity Monitor, reset PRAM, repaired permissions, erased Macintosh HD and restored my hard drive... without results)? c) Could you help me?
    Thanks!

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Having Kernel Panic issues and need help

So about 6 months ago I had a HD crash, I restored it through disk utility and reloaded from my last time machine backup.  Ever since then my computer would turn off randomly and I didn't know why, looked into it a bit more and thought the HD was bad so replaced it with a 500Gb SSD.  When I got that I used a HD clone to copy the drive over and the problem still continued.  I noticed it was when I would try and do something that might be a little taxing on the system like open a big program or stream something with other things open.  All things that might stress the system, but nothing out of the ordinary and never had an issue for the years I had the computer before the crash.  I looked into the issue more and have tried to trouble shoot the issue and this is what I have done/found thus far.
~Replaced HD to a SSD HD with no improvement
~Put new SSD in a totally different MCB and the issues still stand
~Reloaded Mavericks on the HD and it is still happening (Had an issue when trying to erase the HD in recovery, Disk Utility said it could unmount the disk when I clicked the drive, but if I clicked that name of the drive indented under neath it worked)
I have included my latest panic log in hopes for some help.  The new MacBook Pro that I put my HD in I got second hand and said they were having some issues with it, but it only happened when they upgraded to Yosemite.  There was nothing wrong with it previous, so I think I eliminated the possibility of it being a Hardware issue, but not 100% on that. Thanks for the help, Chris

    New updates:
I pulled the SSD out and put it into an external enclosure and was able to fully erase the drive through disk utility.  From there I used the bootable disk that came with the computer which put snow leopard on.  From there I upgrade through the app store to Mavericks, I used the computer all night with no issues or reboots at all, was finally able to run a Hardware diagnostic with nothing showing up there after the extended test.  I am now running Mavericks and am transferring data off my external, but only the essentials such as music and pictures with fresh installs of all applications.  Everything was going great... until about 5 min ago.  As I was transferring about 250Gb of music I opened a browser and had a kernel panic shutdown.  I have included the log, hoping it was just a fluke thing, but don't have any faith at this point

  • Kernel panics, crashes and other issues

    hi all -
i've been reading through tons of posts over the last week about my issue and trying to resolve it but can't seem to get my machine up and running consistently.
it started crashing consistently on jan 10 - suspiciously the day the itunes update came out - and i have since run the fixes people posted relating to that update to no avail.
i keep getting kernel panics - while i'm running photoshop, safari, word, textedit, ical, etc. i took it to a mac authorized repair shop, but they gave it back to me saying they couldn't duplicate the issue described. it started happening again right away - i unplugged everything except the keyboard and mouse. still got them. have run disk utility from the startup disks several times.
one thing i noticed was it seems to repair the same problem every time - "invalid extent entry". i found a post on this board that said only disk warrior can fix that problem in 10.3.9. disk utility says it fixes it, but it comes up every time...
also - after i downloaded and ran onyx it seemed to be better for the last two days. and then today i plugged my scanner in and tried using it. it crashed photoshop and then everything else started crashing even though i unplugged the scanner. i tried looking for a driver update for it, but os 10 couldn't open the file i downloaded from epson - which was:
TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v2.65A
    Macintosh OS X (v10.2.x - 10.3.x)
    epson11385.sea.hqx - 34.2MB - posted on 04/18/05
a window popped up that said the file didn't appear to be compressed and i should get more information from the manufacturer. i read on this forum that bad drivers can cause kernel panics, but i can't seem to load the update. i also trashed my epson printer driver for good measure.
    1) so my first question is: could the invalid extent entry problem be causing kernel panics? or are the two unrelated? should i definitely download disk warrior to fix that?
    2) also something i haven't been clear about regarding repairing permissions - do you have to boot from another drive to repair permissions? my internal drive is my startup disk, and i don't have a bootable external drive. i tried repairing permissions with onyx, but it crashes every time. is this because i need to boot from another disk? how do you do that and run onyx?
    3) has anyone had the problem with panther not opening the epson 4870 driver update?
i've been trying to solve this for weeks...i'm about to swear off technology altogether and move to the mountains.
thanks for any suggestions you might have!

You are doing fine. Don't beat up on yourself (bad ram will do pleanty of that by itself).
Until you get the ram figured out there is no hope for a stable system. If you have bad ram then it will corrupt the system as fast as you can repair it.
If you have the hardware test disk it has a ram tester that can, depending on the system and disk, run in extended(on the menu) or looped mode(command l). It usually reports which stick of ram is bad. On a desktop this is a big deal.
On a laptop it is much easier. You usually have a limited number of ram slots. I don't know what mac you are running because you have not filled out any of the info for your profile.
Pull all but one stick of ram and run on the other to see if that helps. If no change, run on the other stick and see if that helps. If all the ram is non Apple then it could be either. Apple ram is usually, but not always, good ram that stays good. By the way, with the dry weather we are having it is important not to risk static zapping of your mac. The easiest way to ground yourself is to be bare foot then touch the power supply case or other metal interior surface of the computer before tackling the electronics.
I like Crucial Ram but OWC also has a lifetime guarantee and they stand behind the ram. If the vendor of replacement ram has a bench tester then that is the best you can do without putting the ram in your mac.
Once you get good ram in your mac then concentrate on the system. In my opinion, Disk Warrior is the only utility that one needs to purchase for X. It can keep fixing your directory but if the ram is bad X will keep getting corrupted again.
That the permissions are not running off of disk is, yes, a bad sign.
    When the ram is replaced;
If you have a backup hard drive I'd make sure that it has, at a minimum, all your user data. You can also do this with cd/dvd's.
Reformat the hard drive and zero it to map out bad blocks. The system and applications can be reloaded later and your user data can be imported to the clean, new system. That is what I would make my mind up on doing.
It may be possible to keep your current system running with good ram and Disk Warrior but the odds are that some files have been corrupted and will rear their ugly heads in the future.
    Just my 2 cents.

  • First Kernel Panic ever - and dont't know why...

Hello NG, Monday evening I encountered my first kernel panic. My wife was uploading some pictures to order copies made and suddenly: "You have to restart... etc.". I posted the logfile below. Does anybody know the reason for this crash ? The process responsible for the crash seems to be this one:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
    And the complete logfile:

I am recieving a Kernel Panic notification Error Code: 0x00000010 every time I start the computer - I read that reinstalling the os would fix the issue, however I got my MacBook in '08 and have since lost the operating system. Any ideas?

Kernel panics are usually hardware related so I don't know where you read that reinstalling the OS is a definite fix. Bad ram is a typical issue. Read: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
If you lost your OS installer DVD then get a new one. Contact AppleCare and request a new DVD. You need that for repairing the hard drive and reinstalling your OS. Keep it in a safe place next time.

  • Kernel Panic Log and Surrounding Circumstances

    Hello everyone,
I'm receiving semi-frequent kernel panics while using my MacBook Air (Mid 2011) 11' model. I've gone so far as to reformat the computer and update it, yet I received the error again last night. Since then, I've tried the PRAM reset, and not yet experienced a kernel panic, but I'm still unsure whether or not the issue has been resolved. Generally speaking, these errors pop up while I'm on facebook or something similar. I don't really use the computer for any serious purposes (mostly just web browsing), and during these times are when the errors pop up. All help regarding this issue is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time! Without further ado, here is the error log:

  • Kernel Panic, Same and Continuous

Greetings. After the recent 10.5.3 I too have been hit with a kernel panic. I'm able to boot in safe mode, and my second drive, which I have not updated, operates normally. Using Techtool and Disk Utility, along with other recommended checks, I'm fairly certain it isn't hardware related, but not 100% sure, none of the tests picked up RAM or Memory problems, but again, I might not be looking at them correctly. I'm trying to translate the error report but can't really put it together, any help for a solution is appriciated.

Thanks for the welcome, and I do have an update.
Following some other advice I downloaded the combo updater from the apple site and reinstalled 10.3.5 and the kernel panic dissappeared, but I'm worried now it might pop up again, so I want to make sure I'm not holding onto items that would cause an error.
In Safe Mode, your correct, I get no kernel panics, and I agree it was something odd in the 3rd party. It may still be there waiting to pop up again, so to answer your questions.
    In Startupitems: empty.
    myusername/library/lauchagents: empty
login items under accounts are ItunesHelper and Logitech Control Center for my keyboard and mouse.
system/library/launchagents and deamons is quite full of items.
In launchangents almost all are com.apple items, only 5 are not:
    CoreMIDIServer.plist
    org.openbsd.ssh-agent.plist
    edu.mit.Kerberos.KerberosAgent.plist
    edu.mit.Kerberos.CCacheServer.plist
    org.x.X11.plist
Unsure what they are. In daemons the non com.apple items are:
    bootps.plist
    comsat.plist
    tftp.plist
    eppc.plist
    exec.plist
    finger.plist
    ftp.plist
    login.plist
    nmbd.plist
    ntalk.plist
    org.amavis.amavisd_cleanup.plist
    org.amavis.amavisd.plist
    org.apache.httpd.plist
    org.cups.cups-lpd.plist
    org.cups.cupsd.plist
    org.isc.named.plist
    org.net-snmp.snmpd.plist
    org.ntp.ntpd.plist
    org.postfix.master.plist
    org.samba.winbindd.plist
    shell.plist
    smbd.plist
    ssh.plist
    telnet.plist
Do any of these ring a bell for you?

  • KERNEL PANICS OVER AND OVER CRASH

my last report 06/16. i had two panics 30mins apart. i get them sometimes weeks apart or up too two+ in same day. got my macbook in 2007 model came out new and in 2009 my system crashed white screen saying it could not find my had drive disk and i lost everything. • Kernel panics: AGPM and iokit

    Hi all,
Getting LOTS of kernel panics the past several weeks. In the error report backtrace, every one has the following in common:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.driver.AGPM(100.9.3)@0xcf5000->0xcfcfff
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.0)@0x963000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6)@0x952000
Not sure if that's enough to go on, but I don't know what to make of it. I did search for AGPM and iokit, but the results turn up lots of posts with full dumps that include them. Those are the only two specifically appearing in mine.
Disclosure: I have a 5,1 MBP (2.53), and I have added the OWC 6GB memory kit. But I've had that for some time, and the kernel panics started only recently.
Hoping someone has some insight, and if so, thanks very much..!

I've been having a problem for few months now involving the same kernel extension, "IOPCIFamily.kext". There's a post by a guy named "tektite" on this thread that might be useful to you:

    Hope it helps.

  • Random Kernel Panic Restarts and Session Logouts

Since installed Yosemite and its first update 10.10.1, I am experiencing random kernel panics and subsequent restarts.
Also I'm having random session logouts, nut that happens less frequently.
I'm running an late 2012 iMac, Intel Core i7 3,1 GHz, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB, 1TB Fusion Drive.
I had a problem in the hard drive, but Apple Geniuses solved it and performed a fresh Yosemite install.
Over that install, I restored a Time Machine backup.
All and all, the issue still continues.
Last panic report is this one:

    Any help will be appreciated.

First of all, thanks for your help Eric.
I did uninstalled both drivers and so far (30') there has been no issue.
Of course, since those kernel panics are random, I wouldn't know if they are already solved.
Maybe I should wait a significant amount of time to be sure.
Anyway, all points to the VCP driver to be the culprit.
Thing is that I will need the driver installed again at some point to run a Z-Wave USB stick, that controls my home automation.
The driver version is the latest Silicon Labs made available, which is pre-Yosemite.
Also, they say they are upgrading the driver (which reinforces the theory of it being the faulty), but have no release date yet.
    Any suggestions in the meantime?

  • Kernel panic: MacOS and Installation disk don't boot - WinXP works

    I've the following problem:
I can't boot MacOS anymore. I tried all boot options and the hardware test shows no issues. Every time I try to boot MacOS i get a kernel panic.
The strange thing is that I even can't boot the installation disc as I also get a kernel panic there.
The only thing that works is booting Windows XP with bootcamp. So for me it seems not to be a hardware issue if Windows XP is booting and everything there works fine.
All my data is backuped, so a new installation would be fine to me. But how? Any help is appreciated...
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB RAM, 500GB harddisk, 256MB graphic

Since booting off the installation disc doesn't work, it suggests a hardware problem that Mac OS X is more sensitive to. RAM is the most likely culprit, though any peripherals that are attached to the machine that the installation disc doesn't recognize as having the proper drivers may also be a problem. RAM can cause problems for Mac OS X when not to spec, or having a random bit error, which XP might not see unless doing a very intensive operation that runs into that same bit. Try replacing the RAM with high quality RAM from http://www.crucial.com/ that meets the specs of your machine on http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html

  • Kernel Panic - Utilities and strange file

For a couple of weeks I've been experiencing kernal panics on a MacBook resulting in having to do a forced reboot. Several things could be causing this and it's a matter of trying to identify possible causes. The main culprits I feel at present could be usb hard-drive devices or the mains power supply as it doesn't occur on batteries. It's a process of elimination as I use the MacBook some 8-9 hours per day with all the main programs associated with DTP applications. This morning having run Repair disk permissions again, up came the following message which, I confess, I haven't seen before and I hope someone may be able to shed some light on the subject.
ACL found but not expected on Network
ACL found but not expected on Library/Applications Support/Apple/iChat icons/Flags....
(This was repeated on all the other folders in this path).
Having rand a search on the letters ACL the only references I can find relate to some language files:
Default ACL [German] - Microsoft Office Preferences
    Default ACL [Italian]
    Default ACL [French]
    Can anyone help please.
    Many thanks - Barry

See Mac OS X 10.5- Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions reports issues with SUID files.
ACLs are Leopard's new method of dealing with file/folder permissions. Such messages are only informational and do not indicate any problem.
