Kernel Panic only at night

The last four nights I have awoken to a kernel panic attack. I have had none during the day or while running any apps. It only seems to happen sometime in the night while no one is using the computer. I can leave it for hours during the day, and it doesn't happen.
If anyone else is experiencing a similar situation or has any other suggestions short of doing a system re-install please let me know.
Below is the panic log: (Does this actually say anything meaningful?)

OSX runs automated maintainance scripts at night during the wee hours of the morning. There are daily, weekly, and monthly cron scripts that run. Maybe they are causing your crashes?
To find out, download a free trial of the program called 'cocktail' which allows you to run these scripts when you want to. This will allow you to see if these automated tasks are bringing down your system. Here is a link for cocktail (tiger edition):

Good luck,

  • Kernel Panic only after I install 16GiB RAM but it passed memtest and AHT

Kernel Panics occur after I installed the 16GiB RAM(Corsair Vengeance Laptop Memory Kit 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL10 PC3 12800 (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10) in my MacBook Pro 17" 2011 early. It might appear in login window, or after using Safari for 2 or 3 hours. If I did't use the MBP overnight and just let it run, there would be strong possibility that kernel panic didn't occur. But on the next day when I went up and start using the computer, the kernel panic occur in half an hour.
I run the memtest for 12+ hours and Apple Hardware Test for 19+ hours, but no error was found. I tried OS X Lion 10.7.4 and OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 GM, and even a clean install of 10.7.4, but it still occur.
However, when I install one of the 16GiB a.k.a 8GiB, kernel panic never occur. I even tried one 8GiB with another my old 4GiB ram, and kernel panic didn't occur either.
I've tried to fix the problems for 2 weeks, and I did everything I can. So, can anyone tell me which part might be bad, Mac or RAM? Should I goto Genius Bar or ask Corsair for RMA?

    Thank you for your reply.
My 8GiB RAM is also two 4GiB DDR3 1600MHz (SAMSUNG) and it was running very well.
I also checked the intel documents (http://ark.intel.com/products/50067/Intel-Core-i7-2720QM-Processor-(6M-Cache-up- to-3_30-GHz), and it says:
    Memory Types
    DDR3-1066/1333/1600
If you have read my original reply to you post, I did mention that someimes it will work and sometimes it won't.  Your Samsung might be rated at 1600MHz but the CL could be higher than your Corsair which is why it worked.
The memory Type you read in the link you provided is motherboard/logicboard depended.  Your Logic board is rated at 1333MHz.  So going 1600MHz will not benefit you since you're locked at 1333MHz.
    good luck

  • I had my very first Kernel Panic last night. Is it worrisome?

I sended the problem to Apple (Diagnostic report), and I never had a problem since. I heard it's a software issue, but I don't know much about it since this is my first time of having it after 3 months of having my 2014 MacBook Air. Does this happen to you guys?

Thankfully, I haven't had any Kernel Panics since last night. It only had one Kernel Panic, and it told me to restart it. After I restarted my MacBook Air, I haven't had a Kernel Panic since. I think it was only a software glitch. I'm not sure, though.

  • Mid-2012 macbook pro gets kernel panics when waking from sleep

    Hi all,
I got a new mid-2012 Macbook Pro running Lion (10.7.5) at the end of Oct which started kernel panicking pretty much from day one. The kernel panics only occur when the computer is put to sleep and reawaken after more than an hour or so has passed. I get a grey screen that eventually shows text like "Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Please wait a few seconds or press any key to continue" and then the OS boots up again. Bizarrely, this doesn't usually happen if the computer has only been asleep for a short time - i.e. 15 min or less.
Below is the kernel panic log, which seems to suggest there's an issue with the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card.
Anyone have any idea what the problem is? Advice is much appreciated.

  • 15'' MBP + M4 SSD + Kernel Panics + Data Doubler = dead end

    Hey there,
I've been dealing with an issue since the snow leopard days, and it got worse sometime in Mountain Lion. 2.66 GHz i7 w/ 8GB DDR.
A brief history: In January 2013 I replaced the main HD on my MBP with a 500GB Crucial M4 SSD. I simultaneously upgraded to 8GB of Crucial DDRAM.
For a year or so everything ran at blazing speeds: I use Ableton Live for music production and use many plug-ins along with it, so CPU load has been pushed more than once, never to any place that was immediately fatal. Slowly, with increasing frequency, I began to experience unpredictable kernel panics. Once a month at first, then twice, then once a week, etc. Usually they would happen while doing something low-CPU such as browsing the internet with few or no apps open besides my browser. By September 2014, I t was happening multiple times per day. A colleague suggested moving my SSD to a data doubler and putting the original HD back in the place it started.
Trusting this colleague and some light reading, I ordered an OWC data doubler and installed it. Per "about this mac -> system report," the doubler is properly installed: under "SATA/SATA Express" there are two "Intel 5 Series Chipset" drop downs (see pics). I've tried several HDs and the SSD in the doubler to no avail, and all the same hard drives do show up in the original SATA port (pics demonstrate). In no case can I find the doubler's drive in Disk Utility or in Recovery mode. The most interesting next step I have heard is to open the BIOS (i.e. firmware, right?) and tell my laptop to look for the SSD in the second SATA port. Any ideas?
    Other mentionables:
-The kernel panics only occur with the SSD in the main HD port, even after formatting. Booting from Original HD or external HD do not experience these issues
-The SSD is SATA III and both my laptop's connections are SATA II; I don't think that's an issue as the M4 can operate at 3gb / s and does so in the main HD bay
-I haven't done any RAM-isolating trouble shooting, though as mentioned the kernel panics only happen with the SSD in the main HD bay
Thank you so much for any energy you put into my issue.
    All the best,
    Kevin

As (bad) luck would have it, I don't have the discs that came with the machine .  Isn't that always the way?
At any rate, I figured that would be a suggestion and searched the web for looking to see if what I need (AHT) could possibly be downloaded.  Looks like some folks have found a way/location to download AHT from the web from some of the posts I've seen, but I've come up empty handed.

  • Why do I a kernel panic if I connect my SCSI Iomega Zipdrive?

I have start up problems in 10.4.11 (kernel panic), if my SCSI Iomega Zipdrive
is connected to its AC power transformer and the Adaptec SCSI expansion card in
my G4 PowerPC. I can no longer start the computer even after multiple restarts,
the restarts always end in a new kernel panic.
As soon as I unplug the transformer power supply from the Zipdrive, I no longer have kernel panics.
I used the Zipdrive together with Adaptec SCSI CARD 2906 which came with its own software that after installation shows up as Adaptec290X-2930.kext driver, version 1.1.0, in System/Library/Extensions.
This setup has worked for me from OS 10.2 through all later updates up to 10.4.5, but has not worked since.
In trying to solve the kernel panics I examined the extension files in the system profiler, and noticed that there are suddenly all sorts of additional
    Adaptec extensions, namely
    Adaptec39160.kext
    Adaptec29160x.kext
    Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext
    What do they do?
On the other hand I found that the original Adaptec290X-2930.kext I installed with the card no longer had any dependencies and was apparently not supported by the system.
I also tried to install, after reading some similar posts, the latest version of the card driver, namely version 1.2.0, which I had down-loaded from Adaptec's site.
I still could not start up with the Zipdrive connected as all I would get is more Kernel Panics.
If I switch the Start Up System to OS 9.2, I have no problem with start-up or kernel panics, even when the Zipdrive is connected, and it works as it should.

The mystery of kernel panics when I connect my zip drive is getting more complex,so I have to add more info to my original post.
The original post had an error: I had downloaded Adaptec290X-2930.kext version 1.1.0 (not 1.2.0) from the Adaptec website, and installed it.
In the system profiler/extension I now get info that Adaptec290X-2930.kext dependencies are "satisfied", but its "integrity" is "unknown".
I also notice that the system profiler/extension (list) no longer lists any of the extensions named:
    Adaptec39160.kext
    Adaptec29160x.kext
    Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext,
however in /system/library/extensions they are still there.
I also can now no longer see the zip drive on the desktop when I start in system 9.2.2, as a matter of fact I could do so only once.
I then went to delete OS 10.4.11 from one of the 4 drives on my computer, including its 9.2 system folder. After that I loaded system 10.2 from an old install disk I had onto that drive, together with its classic 9.2.
I then started that disk in 9.2, with the zipdrive connected - and it showed on the desktop. I was able to copy its floppy's content. I did the same with one more floppy loaded after.
OK I got it working, I thought. I now tried restarting the computer in 10.2,
the zip drive showed on the desktop, but when I tried to change the floppy the 10.2 froze with a kernel panic. I could not get it restarted, more kernel panics only, until I finally pulled the power cord from the zipdrive, then it started without problem.
I switched the start-up back to 9.2, on the same disk.
I could start the computer with the zip connected, however as soon as I tried
load a new floppy (I tried several) it would now also freeze up with kernel panics. Since I still could start it with the Zip connected, I opened the SCSI Control Panel in 9.2 and found that the Zipdrive was connected at port 7 and the SCSI properly terminated. In more detail I found that the Zipdrive cannot be loaded because of a system error "-36" which I analysed as an "I/O error - not supported".
I then examined the startup items in the system profiler and found at
    /System/Library/StartupItems/Disks the following:
    Provides: Disks
    Requires: SecurityServer
    Uses: System Tuning
I now suspect that this SecurityServer was updated recently to somehow mark all disks loaded on the external SCSI as "suspect". It seems to extent its control from my three OS 10.4.11 loaded disks on my computer to now even cause kernel panics in the one reloaded with OS 10.2.
It probably takes advantage of the "user" files which identify all disks on this computer by my name.

  • Kernel Panic during Time Machine Backup

Hello everybody, two days ago I was doing a time machine backup, and I got the kernel panic message that suggested me to switch off the computer.
I did it, I restarted the computer and since then I cannot get the time machine backup to end without a kernel panic!
Side information: my HD of 250Gb has only 1gb left, OSX 10.6.6, everything updated,
I was listening itunes music during the backup.
    have to be a solution!
Down here one of the latest kernel panic log:

    Hi all
my Time Machine backups regularly result in kernel panics. I'm on a MBP 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and backing up to a Time Capsule. I removed the entire backup, erased the HDD in Airport Utility, and started from scratch backing up via Ethernet. No other applications are open.
I verified and repaired the internal HDD with Disk Utility (booting from the Mac OS X Install DVD). HDD appears to be ok. Repaired disk permissions. Ran Apple Hardware Test, all ok. Removed the Preference file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (as per #A4. suggestion). But after all this, I still get kernel panics only after about 2 or 3GB into the backup (of approx. 140GB data total).
The Time Machine widget that I installed reported this after the reboot after the last kernel panic:
    +Starting standard backup+
+Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://Marcus%[email protected]/Finger%20Lime%20HD+

    +No pre-backup thinning needed: 146.69 GB requested (including padding), 893.87 GB available+

These are the kernel panic reports I'm getting. I took out the HEX bits ("snip"). They all report as the possible cause: "unlocking an unlocked mutex or spinlock". Can anyone suggest any solutions to this problem? Thanks heaps!

  • Keep getting kernel panic even when everything is updated

My MacPro keeps having kernel panic (4x in a week, then none in almost 2 weeks, then comes back again today) even when everything is updated. And I recognize that I always get the kernel panic only when I visit this one website where I usually go to stream an online movie. What could be wrong with my Mac? Is there a way to stop and/or prevent future kernel panic attack?

    Safe Mode
Starting up into Safe Mode does several things:
It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
In Mac OS X v10.3.9 or earlier, Safe Mode runs only Apple-installed startup items (such items may be installed either in /Library/StartupItems or in /System/Library/StartupItems; these are different than user-selected account login items).
It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
It disables all startup items and login items (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later: A Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache at (/var/db/dyld/). A cache with issues may cause a blue screen on startup, particularly after a Software Update. Restarting normally recreates this cache.
Taken together, these changes can help resolve software or directory issues that may exist on the startup volume.
    Try Repair Disk.

This has been occurring on my MacBook Pro since last week. The BSD process named changes each time, and runs from kernel_task to ScreenSaverEngine to Adium. The kernel panics ONLY occur when I'm at home though, and not at my office.
The only difference in the environments is the wireless setup - at home I have an AEBS.

  • Kernel Panic when installing Logic Studio 2 (Logic 9) Upgrade

I just bought the Logic 9 Upgrade from Logic Studio or Logic Pro. I have gotten partially through the install multiple times, but every time, I get a kernel panic about 10% through the installation. I have tried this on two different Mac OS (10.5.8) installations and get the same result.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

For a kernel panic only three possible reasons exist:
    1. You have a device driver which has a bug and/or so outdated, that it is no longer compatible with the current version of Mac OS X, which you are currently running. For musicians this is typically an audio driver, but can be a special MIDI driver too or a driver for a control surface.
    2. A hardware defect, most commonly: cheap memory, which is no reliable. Small applications usually run fine, because they are probably staying within the memory which came with the Mac, but larger ones (Logic, Final Cut, etc) use more memory and will crash if the memory is bad.
    3. A programming error or programming oversight in Mac OS X can trigger it. I have not seen any of these in years, but with the very early versions of Mac OS X (10.0, 10.1), they were not uncommon.
As you might have noticed: none of these issues, are within the application itself!

  • Kernel panics several times a week

My MacBook Pro keeps having continuous kernel panics several times a week. How can I figure out what's causing them?

    Hi serylup,
I think I was able to find the cause. I realized that the kernel panics only began happening soon after I bought a Logitech Wireless Bluetooth mouse. Instead of just using the mouse with the Bluetooth connectivity, I also installed the software that came with it.
So, what I did was turn off the mouse and delete it from the list of Bluetooth devices on the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences. Then I went and purged my system of the Logitech additional software. I made sure that all the suspect files like .plist files and Application Support files were removed as well.
Then I rebooted and started  using my machine. The kernel panics stopped immediately. I then proceeded to use the mouse but only with the Bluetooth connectivity and no extra software and I haven't had any problems since.
So, I guess what I would recommend you do is to try and figure out if you've installed any third-party software for any peripheral devices (especially if they come from Logitech!!!) and uninstall those third party devices. You really don't need Logitech software for their keyboards and wireless mouses; they work just fine as "plug-and-play".
    I hope this helps!

  • Tuxonice resume kernel panic

    Hi!
I'm running kernel-netbook 3.5.2, with latest tuxonice patch.
I'm having kernel panic only during resume with a sd memory stick inside my netbook (i tried on two netbooks, same result).
So, because i never tried it before (with older patch), the question is: is this a bug of the latest patch? Or is it a well-known bug? Or is it my configuration problem?
Please, if you have time, it takes only an hibernation cycle time, try and test it, and let me know.
    Thank you very much!

You don't have Snow Leopard anymore. Remove:
    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard
    and see if that helps.

  • Strange Kernel Panic Problem

I've had kernel panics from time to time. No big deal as I would just restart the machine (several times on occasion), and the machine would clear up and work fine for months till the next kernel panic.
Last night, it did the same kernel panic, but after restarting I will now get the grey screen, then all of sudden the machine acts and sounds like it's going to sleep mode (not like when I tell it to shutdown), but will turn the machine completely off. It now seems to be caught in a loop - turn the machine on, tries to restart, turns off.
Any suggestions to try? Thanks, Mark

If it looks as though the drive content is a total loss, and if you
have not tried to totally wipe the hard disk drive (if it shows, ever)
you could attempt to low-level reformat, then reformat to HFS+
and attempt a reinstall from scratch.
The computer may really need the hard disk drive replaced; and
then later on, see about getting into the older drive at some other
time with it put into an external HDD enclosure. It may have some
damage on the startup sectors or something. -- Or it could have
developed a defective piece of original RAM, after all this time.
On occasion, an issue can develop where the ATA controller on
the board goes bad, and drives won't be seen or are, but won't
work. Errors can be written back to a drive so it won't boot, either.
Perhaps an expert has other disk tools; and if you have an externally
enclosed HDD (perhaps Firewire) you could see if a system on that
could boot the computer and try using an installed Disk tool or utility
to repair the ailing internal HDD from that.
If there is a problem on the logic board or with the controller circuit,
that may be a costly repair; so if you have access to a reliably sure
authorized repair shop who can fix Apple iMacG4s and portables, they
may be able to figure out the cause of this problem, troubleshooting.
Maybe someone at the repair shop can make sense of those cryptic
error and terminal (and kernel, other) system messages, too?
PS: How many times did you have the booted Disk Utility try and repair
the hard disk drive in the computer? What were the repair errors shown
from the Disk Repair (repair disk) segment of the routine?

  • Unsolved Kernel Panic.

    Hi guys,
I have a problem on my macbook pro 2011 13" and this problem has bugged me for quite a long time. I've been using my MBP since June 2011 and it worked smoothly until December 2011, when I was working with Photoshop, and I got this kind of screen flicker (with blue, yellow, and black bar) and a warning box with different languages. I google'd to know what's happening with my MBP, and it seems my MBP has suffered from Kernel Panic.
I tried to fix it, bring it to apple authorized service centre and the problem seemed to go away. I thought my graphic card is defective, I guess I was wrong. I tried to play Limbo, and that kernel panic occured again, but this time kernel panic only occurs when I'm playing games. And the same kind of problem occured when I play games on windows 7, the screen distorted for short time, then it goes to BSOD state.
I tried to solve it by myself at this time, so I clean installed new OS, Snow Leopard (I used Lion before). Everything seems fine, but suddenly this problem occurs again! And I bumped into this website and I was wondering if one of you guys could identify from my latest Kernel Panic error log:

once again, thanks for reading my long post. I hope there's a cure for my laptop. Sorry for my bad english btw.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805 Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts
"You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) message appears (Mac OS X v10.5, 10.6)
User Tip:  Kernel Panics? Don't panic too!
You are still under warranty.  Suggest that you call Apple Care & let them deal w/it.  Why should you?

  • Late 2009 imac- Mavericks, Kernel Panics- checkerboard screen- only works in Safe Mode now.

Need help with Late 2009 imac- had HD and video card replaced under Apple Care last year. Upgraded to Mavericks and it froze up while on Yahoo looking at a slide show. Screen pixelated with checkerboard patterns and then eventually locks-up. Only way to get it to work now is in SAFE MODE.
Tried memory test, Resetting SMC, AHT, Zapping NVRAM, PRAM, only errors I can see are some permissions
    From Repair Permissions (Disk utility):
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”Warning: SUID file “usr/libexec/security_authtrampoline” has been modified and will not be repaired.Warning: SUID file “usr/lib/sa/sadc” has been modified and will not be repaired.Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .Repaired “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”
From LOG see a new RAM and KERNEL PANIC-
Note RAM was tested in separate test and passed erlier today- but see that it is listed as corrupt here:

All RAM tested individually and Passed- Ran a Ram memory test as well.
New kernel panic is now as follows-
What's interesting is I had the video card replaced at Apple in the last year- it's a ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
But I see that the log has it listed as
    "com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000(8.2.4)"
wondering if that my be the problem as the issue is the screen is fragmented and flickers- checkerboard before it crashes when not in safe mode..
