Why do I a kernel panic if I connect my SCSI Iomega Zipdrive?
I have start up problems in 10.4.11 (kernel panic), if my SCSI Iomega Zipdrive
is connected to its AC power transformer and the Adaptec SCSI expansion card in
my G4 PowerPC. I can no longer start the computer even after multiple restarts,
the restarts always end in a new kernel panic.
As soon as I unplug the transformer power supply from the Zipdrive, I no longer have kernel panics.
I used the Zipdrive together with Adaptec SCSI CARD 2906 which came with its own software that after installation shows up as Adaptec290X-2930.kext driver, version 1.1.0, in System/Library/Extensions.
This setup has worked for me from OS 10.2 through all later updates up to 10.4.5, but has not worked since.
In trying to solve the kernel panics I examined the extension files in the system profiler, and noticed that there are suddenly all sorts of additional
Adaptec extensions, namely
Adaptec39160.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext
What do they do?
On the other hand I found that the original Adaptec290X-2930.kext I installed with the card no longer had any dependencies and was apparently not supported by the system.
I also tried to install, after reading some similar posts, the latest version of the card driver, namely version 1.2.0, which I had down-loaded from Adaptec's site.
I still could not start up with the Zipdrive connected as all I would get is more Kernel Panics.
If I switch the Start Up System to OS 9.2, I have no problem with start-up or kernel panics, even when the Zipdrive is connected, and it works as it should.
The mystery of kernel panics when I connect my zip drive is getting more complex,so I have to add more info to my original post.
The original post had an error: I had downloaded Adaptec290X-2930.kext version 1.1.0 (not 1.2.0) from the Adaptec website, and installed it.
In the system profiler/extension I now get info that Adaptec290X-2930.kext dependencies are "satisfied", but its "integrity" is "unknown".
I also notice that the system profiler/extension (list) no longer lists any of the extensions named:
Adaptec39160.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext,
however in /system/library/extensions they are still there.
I also can now no longer see the zip drive on the desktop when I start in system 9.2.2, as a matter of fact I could do so only once.
I then went to delete OS 10.4.11 from one of the 4 drives on my computer, including its 9.2 system folder. After that I loaded system 10.2 from an old install disk I had onto that drive, together with its classic 9.2.
I then started that disk in 9.2, with the zipdrive connected - and it showed on the desktop. I was able to copy its floppy's content. I did the same with one more floppy loaded after.
OK I got it working, I thought. I now tried restarting the computer in 10.2,
the zip drive showed on the desktop, but when I tried to change the floppy the 10.2 froze with a kernel panic. I could not get it restarted, more kernel panics only, until I finally pulled the power cord from the zipdrive, then it started without problem.
I switched the start-up back to 9.2, on the same disk.
I could start the computer with the zip connected, however as soon as I tried
load a new floppy (I tried several) it would now also freeze up with kernel panics. Since I still could start it with the Zip connected, I opened the SCSI Control Panel in 9.2 and found that the Zipdrive was connected at port 7 and the SCSI properly terminated. In more detail I found that the Zipdrive cannot be loaded because of a system error "-36" which I analysed as an "I/O error - not supported".
I then examined the startup items in the system profiler and found at
/System/Library/StartupItems/Disks the following:
Provides: Disks
Requires: SecurityServer
Uses: System Tuning
I now suspect that this SecurityServer was updated recently to somehow mark all disks loaded on the external SCSI as "suspect". It seems to extent its control from my three OS 10.4.11 loaded disks on my computer to now even cause kernel panics in the one reloaded with OS 10.2.
It probably takes advantage of the "user" files which identify all disks on this computer by my name.

What is wrong with my user account?? Why do I get kernel panic when restart
Hi there. I got Leopard and was quite unhappy (don't think it was meant for a powerbook). So I started using Tiger again, and I flip flopped once or twice after the update came out for Leopard, thinking/hoping it would fix my problems. It didn't. I have given up on Leopard.
But, now Tiger seems to have a few problems of its own. I get the kernel panic when I restart my computer (telling me to restart), so I have to hold down the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on. Not a big deal, but if it shouldn't be doing that, I don't want it to, ya know? Never did it before Leopard.
My user account seems to be dysfunctional when it comes to downloading plug-ins for safari or firefox. I had to create a new user account and download the plug in from that account and then drag it into the HD to use it on my user account. I repaired disk permissions and booted from Tiger and did the same thing on there. After that, my user account is still not able to download that plug-in without getting errors (256)?
Is there a way to do a reinstall of Tiger from a blank slate, and be sure there won't be any problems?
Thanks!Leopard will work with your Powerbook, the question is, is all your software and hardware ready for it?
Is there a way to do a reinstall of Tiger from a blank slate, and be sure there won't be any problems?
You can start from a blank slate, but if you have a hardware problem that started to generate itself, a blank slate won't solve it. It is called an erase and install. The first thing to do is backup your data*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Once that is done at least twice, we can start looking at solutions for kernel panics*:

Can anyone tell me why I keep getting kernel panics?

Thanks for the question. If your computer unexpectedly restarts, also known as a “kernel panic”, the following article provides the best information:

Kernel Panic when I connect USB cable to use Rane Serato SL3
Connect USB cable to use Rane Serato SL3 causes the following kernel panic. Used cable is an 5 meter USB-2 cable. This is 100% reproducable.
Yes yes I know Rane does not officially support Mavericks yet however if I use another (shorter) USB-2 cable with the Rane Serato SL3 it's no problem. I also have an older Rane Serato SL1 and this device works (USB-1) perfect with the same 5 meter USB-2 cable and the same short USB-2 cable.
I've taken the liberty to ask Rane what's going on and no succes there. They just don't seem to know.
So you smart people over here, what's going on?
Here is the Kernel Panic:

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable these, reenable one at time to determine which. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember. See

Kernel panic when I connect my LAcie quadra 500 GB external disk
As soon as I connect my hard disk I obtain a kernel panic. the veil fall on my screen and I must restart. Somebody could help me thank you in advance
configuration macbook proWelcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you connected the drive to the power source and started up the drive, then plugged it into the proper firewire connection on an already running Mac?
Check your cable connections and the drive's connection to the power source.
It could also be a defective drive, in which case LaCie will stand by it, so contact them.

Kernel panic when I connect to my time capsule
Hi,
I have a macbook pro 2.7ghx, corei7, 8gb ram. Running mac os x 10.7.3.
I recently allowed the system to do an automatic upgrade and now every time I try to connect to my time capsule or it tries to do a backup I get a kernel panic.
The wireless modem part of the time capsule is working perfectly.
Please help.Fairly simple. port forward TCP 548 to the IP of the TC.
The hard part .. you can only use AFP.. so it has to be a Mac to join.
The public IP needs to be static or use dyndns service which will be available in the Linksys router setup.
If you need more details give more details..
Make and model of modem router. Linksys is hardly helpful.. they make about a zillion models over the history of linksys.
A google search of remote access time capsule will get you all the info you need.
This covers the fundamentals.. old but still valid.

Kernel panic when I connect seagate raid
I've updated my OS to 10.9.
Every time I even plug in my 2 drive, 3 TB Seagate for Mac RAID1 the system crashes and comes back up with (what appears to be) a kernel panic.
Any insights? Most likely, one of these is the culprit.

Kernel panic immediately after connecting Android via USB
Hi!
I am getting a kernel panic immediately after I connect my Android phone via MTP. It wasn't happening before (on pre-Yosemite version).
It may be relevant to know that I installed Samsung Kies before, which installs it's kernel modules, but I removed both modules and software itself since then.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Tiger install kernel panics: get rid of all SCSI!
I have a G3 Bluetooth Mac, and could not install from the OS X DVD. I went nuts trying things, including buying new memory (which is now supplementing my original memory) and doing restarts and re-restarts.
Finally, based on a hint, I unplugged an external SCSI Zip drive I was using. I got a little further, but not completely.
This Mac had an Adaptec SCSI card, and it was running an internal Jaz drive as well as one of the computer's three hard drives. I removed the card (the hard drive was not where I was going to install anyway) and the installation made it all the way through.
I have not yet reconnected the SCSI card, but I have downloaded the latest driver to see if the beastie will work okay under 10.4.6 again. Anyway, take all the SCSI out of your Mac (if you can) if you're having install problems.
This should be included in the help page for Tiger installs.Do you have the Default Tab extension?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Hey guys,
I don't understand why I keep getting Kernel Panics. I have replaced my RAM and HDD but the kernel panics started happening a few months before then. I then took my MacBook Pro to the Apple store and they kept it overnight. 3 days later I go to pick it up and they tell me they couldn't find anything wrong software or hardware wise. Their advice was to do a total clean install. So about a month later I did a total clean install, manually putting my stuff back on..not using time machine or migration assistant. I was going well until I just got ANOTHER kernel panic. I really thought doing the clean install would fix it. My mac has been running faster and less buggy after the clean install.
Whats your advice? Do you think the kernel panics will stop when I upgrade to the Mac OS X Lion? Like I said before, the kernel panics happened BEFORE I opened up my computer and upgraded the RAM and HDD, so putting the original parts back in I don't think will fix anything. Plus, after upgrading to 8GB of RAM.

Kernel panic after full system restore
Yesterday I noticed that my computer was quite slow. Seeing as how the hd has never been formatted since I have bought the computer in 2006 I thought the drive was badly fragmented. Since there are no free defrag solutions available for mac, I thought I would just format the drive and do a system restore using time machine. I did a full format with 1 pass of zeros then did a system restore. After the restore when the computer rebooted, I got a kernel panic. The kernel panic mentioned something along the lines of "Version mis-match between Kernel and CPU". I then chose to restore to an earlier backup but that yielded the same results.
I have done a lot of googling and most of the solutions to this problem indicate that the restore is being initiated from a Leopard install disc rather than a Snow Leopard install disc. I am using a snow leopard disc.
In the end, I did get my system working by installing snow leopard over top of itself then applying the latest combo update. The reason for this post is so I can hopefully find out why I got the kernel panic. This incident had cost me a lot of time and if I cannot rely on time machine as a backup solution then there is really no point in using it.
Thanks.eradicator006 wrote:

Doubtful. See: [About disk optimization with Mac OS X|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1375].

Something in your installation of OSX was probably corrupted, damaged, or missing, and Time Machine backed up the corruption (as would any backup utility). So when you restored, you brought the problem back.
That's likely also the reason your Mac was running "quite slow." -
Just a couple days ago I I was watching a video on Youtube, when all of a sudden I got a "Kernal Panic" error screen as seen here:
I kind of shrugged the error off as a fluke, since most blogs and forums that talk about MacbookPro Kernel Panics are rarities. That usually don't occur again, and if they do often because of either minor issues, or on the otherhand major issues. So thinking it wouldn't happen again I used my Macbook for a while without a problem. Decided to launch Mozilla and start browsing the web (which seemed to work fine for 15 mins or so), when all of a sudden I got a second Kernel Panic error. This happened while a specific webpage was loading up (not Youtube). So that scared me, heck this is a fairly new MacbookPro. I used it again for a bit, and decided to try an experiement. I browsed for a while, then tried to visit the same webpage that gave me the Kernel Panic just before, & bam it happened again for a 3rd time!
Ok so being a bit of a tech guru I decided to run these tests to make sure all is well with my machine:
- Booted into Safe Mode
- Ran Disk Utility under the Recovery Partition to verify the HDD Structure
- Checked HDD Smart status
- Ran TechToolPro v7 to do a thorough Disk Scan of every sector on the HDD
as well as a Video Memory test, and Memory Test.
- Booted into the Apple Hardware Test program to check my machine with the
extended test selected
- Verified and Repaired all Permissions errors
- Scanned my HDD with my antivirus ESET CyberSecurity
Every single one of the aforementioned checks I did came out fine. This all took hours to do... The only thing that is never okay so to speak is the permissions errors. Which have always listed a bunch of iTunes errors that show up, but never repair even when it says they did. But that's been that way for almost a year now. I believe there's another permissions error in there somewhere that's also always been there too though (which never repairs). Anyways the only thing I have noticed odd recently is our internet acting weird during the days this happened. Not just on my MacbookPro but on our iPhones too. We're all connected via WiFi, and have noticed some pages not loading, some videos pausing, server messages, 503 errors too I believe. I tried powering off our router and modem twice. But the Kernel Panics I mentioned earlier had still happened even after doing that.
My next step is to call our ISP to make sure all is well on their end. Seeing as I haven't had a Kernel Panic occur while doing anything else, ONLY while browsing the internet. Which I have read on some blogs can happen do to bad network packets. If I'm correct then that might be what has happened. But why in the **** would a MacbookPro restart due to a Kernel Panic error just because of some bad Internet packets coming in? I would have thought pages wouldn't load, not some oblivion style error that reboots the machine! Think about it the Kernel Panics didn't happen during any of my tests which took hours to complete. The antivirus scan alone took 7 hours, on my 750GB HDD. I'm actually writing this post from the very same MacbookPro right now. The only
things I have changed on my machine in the past two weeks was install a MAudio MBox Mini audio driver, iLoc License Key program, & install Pro Tools Express. All of which work hand in hand to make the external audio box work for recording vocals/music. The drivers and software are unsigned from what I recall... I had to disable the "Install Signed Applications Only" section of the Security panel in Mountain Lion before doing so. As far as I know they're the correct drivers for my Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5. The other thing I installed a night or two before the issues started was the newest version of ESET antivirus which installs over the exsiting one. But they're good, I've done this many times and never had an issue. I think I did a Mozilla Firefox update once in the past two weeks too. But they're known for being really good on releases. I've also used my MacbookPro for two weeks since I first installed the external audio box (which connects via usb), and never had this happen. Btw these Kernel Panics happened while the external audio interface was disconnected. Again not something that happened before in two weeks since it's been disconnected many times. I'm positive my machine is fine something I can't really put my finger on made this happen, and I'm scared it will happen again while doing something important!
1. I don't know what to do... Is there something else I can check?
2. Should I still call my ISP to make sure all is well on their end?
3. & why the **** would a Kernel Panic happen due to simple Network Packets (internet) not being received correctly over wifi that would cause a sudden reboot?
Thank You
P.s.
I saved everyone of the Reports that came up after each of the 3 Kernel Panics happened. As per Apples little info about what the reports contain (bunch of garbled words and #'s), they mention to search it for a couple words that referr to serious hardware problems. I never found those words either while using notepad to scan them through.@nbar
I had 3 Kernel Panics happen, here's my most recent error report. I've posted something else below the report for you to see starting in bold characters.

The previous 2 Kernel Panics I had happen to have something similar to the above report. Which I will post below, hoping that it may help you diagnose my issue. They'll be in two small excerpts, both of which I'd like you to notice starting with "Panic" under the date. There probably is other information of use to you within the excerpt too.

Thank you all very much for your time, I will look into the other suggested methods of diagnosing my laptop in the meantime. Too bad I don't have Apple Care... Hope this issue can be resolved. I'm currently studying and my pockets can't take another hit right now. Like I said before I kind of kept away from using my laptop ever since I got the 3 Kernel Panics. Other then when I tested everything out as I mentioned in my first post that started this thread. But I have however began using my laptop since yesterday to post this, and browse a bit to see if the Kernel Panic would persist. I haven't had a Kernel Panic so far... One thing I did notice is the reports mention something about "Panic CPU," and "BSD process name: Eset" in all three reports. Not exactly in those words I just wrote (since each report differs). But it does lead me to think either I have a cpu issue, or the recent install of the new version of Eset I put on my machine this week has something to do with it? Again I'm no expert at reading these reports so I can't say for certain. And if it was some sort of bug in the new version of Eset antivirus, maybe the constant auto update feature of the program fixed/patched it. Which could be why I haven't experienced another Kernel Panic. Just throwing out some ideas... -
MAC Mini A1176 (MA607B/A) Kernel Panic / Not Booting
Hello,
I have a mac mini MA607B/A 1.66/2x1GB/60GB HDD, that is not booting. It Chimes and hands on the apple logo.
I searched this forum and I performed every solution I found. The mac is still doing the same thing.
I also changed the battery but no joy.
I inserted the CD that came with the MAC mini and it does exactly the same while booting from the cd.
I did a H/W check by holding the CMD+D keys and all tests were passed successfuly !!!
I booted in Verbiose mode and I have attached the log as a photo in this thread.
I really have no clue why it gives a kernel panic on CPU...
Temperature seems to be normal and the fan is working.
Any suggestions how to resolve this?Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I tried to boot in Open Firmware mode but it crashes almost imediately.
I have also Installed OSX 10.6 on an external usb hard drive of mine and tried to boot from that and it does exactly the same. I noticed that the external hard drive's light is on and binking while the computer is loading which means that it reads OS files. and after a while when the MAC freezes, the light goes completely off like there is no power supplied to it.
It does exactly the same thing even if i put the original disc that came with it and try to boot from that.
I entered Verbose mode again and now it always freezes after the "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient: Ready" line
Also the keyboard is not responding and the lighs of the keyboard are off as well. -
hi i'm rather new and i checked the forums but couldnt find anything about this topic so if someone can please help me to understand why i got a kernel panic yesterday it would be greatly appreciated. here are my kernel logs

Thunderbolt Bus: iMac, Apple Inc., 22.1I do not remember the exact kernel error but...
I ran the "install OS X Mavericks.app" and waited for the MacBook Pro to reboot.
A kernel panic occurred.
I attempted to do a PRAM reset based on my memory. However, I believe that I did the following key combination at boot:
With the machine powered off, I believe that I pressed the following keys at the same time:
Shift+Control+Command+P+R
The machine booted to the Mavericks OS X Installer window where I proceded to install Mavericks.
After the reboot, the installer "began" the install. However, the installation progress only showed a horizontal blue and white "barber shop" bar rather than the timed progress bar.
Next, I rebooted the macbook pro and did an actual PRAM reset which allowed the installation to continue.
Reset the PRAM http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/Reset-Pram.htm
I have not had another machine to have another kernel panic, so I hope the information works.
Note: The PRAM reset does resolve the blue and white "barber shop" bar. This has been verified on another macbook pro -
Kernel panic after Mountain Lion download?
After I downloaded Mountain Lion on my older MB Pro 17", (which was running Lion 10.7.4 previously), upon the Restart that goes with the install, I got a Kernel Panic screen, telling me to restart again, which I did, returning to the same condition. I tried a Cmd-R restart and performed Disk Repair from Disk Utilities, then re-downloaded ML, but then got the same result.
For what it's worth: Here's the Kernel ID showing on my paralyzed screen:
Kernel UUID: A8ED611D-FB0F-3729-8392-E7A32C5E7D74
System model name: MacBookPro5,2 (Mac-F2268EC8)
Is my build too old for the Mountain Lion install?Disconnect all external devices besides Apple keyboard and mouse, then see what happens.
If you don't get any kernel panics, then try connecting devices one at a time and test for a few days or until you get another KP.
I just read another post which stated there were several threads listing problems with the dual GT 120 cards and Mountain Lion. So, you might search out those if it doesn't turn out to be one of the attached devices.
