Kernel Panic, Restored System Using Time Machine but Problems Still  Persis

SOS! Please, please, please help. I'm at a loss here. I have an 300 GB iMac with a 32 GB partition for Windows. I backup to an Iomega UltraMax 500 GB external hard drive. Let me know if more info is needed. I went through the checklists to resolve a kernel panic, and nothing has been working. Here's the background:
I recently encountered a kernel panic (I saw the screen discussed in the "What is a kernel panic?" article). It started when Firefox 3.2 beta was running. It froze and eventually the system froze. I repaired disk permissions, and I was able to boot up, but it took awhile to boot up. Some things weren't right once it was booted; I lost some keyboard functionality, system settings (screen saver, display settings, etc), etc. I attempted to repair the disk (using disk utility while booted from leopard install disc), but it failed (generated an error, said it couldn't repair disk). So I did the next thing and restored the system from Time Machine. Things seemed to be alright.
And about a couple days later, Time Machine starting encountering errors and failed to backup (it failed while attempting to backup 300 MB). The system also started to get slower, and it eventually froze. So I restored again from Time Machine. Seemed to be alright, but again it eventually slowed and started freezing.
I can't retrieve the panic log. I think it was erased with one of my system restores. I went into Time Machine to look for it, and it's nowhere to be found.
So, I tried to repair my disk permissions. That succeeded. But the disk repair failed again. I restored again from Time Machine. Same thing: things seem okay, but Time Machine isn't able to back-up (it's pretty much non-responsive, even after I told it to stop, it just says "stopping"), things are a bit slow and some applications are unstable (Firefox crashed for no apparent reason). I just found this under /Library/Logs/Crash Reporter:

Windows XP ran fine from my other partition at this point. I'm wondering if my Windows partition has something to do with it (I chose FAT32 instead of NTFS file system)?
Please help. Will erasing the drive, reinstalling from the leopard disc (10.5.4), and restoring select applications/folders/files help, instead of from a system restore from Time Machine?
Your help is immensely appreciated!

Thanks for responding.
So under the partition tab, I should reformat to one partition, reinstall Leopard, and see what happens from there? Selectively restore applications, music, pictures to my system once it's reinstalled and properly updated? Anything else I may need to do or restore?
Why not reformat under the erase tab, zero out the disk, and reinstall? Any difference?
Just a little worried and unsure is all. If it's a hardware thing, I can accept that and take it in to be serviced. But, if it is a software issue, I don't want to do any irreparable harm during the erase-and-reinstall process. Just want to make sure I get it right.

  • Want to restore computer using Time Machine, but am locked out of my accoun

Due to an apparently common problem with Snow Leopard, I restarted to find all users unavailable for login. The info is all still there, but I can not log in--have tried all solutions listed here. THing is:
Everything is backed up using Backup and Time Machine. Is there any way to bring my computer back with Time Machine WITHOUT logging in as my old user? Or do I have everything I need but am locked out of using it? Many thanks!

Yes. See #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Also: can not seem to start up using my install CD (Leopard)
To restore a Snow Leopard backup, you must use a Snow Leopard Install disc.
and my partitioned drive is also Leopard, not Snow Leopard. Mysterious.
If in doubt, re-format it in step (c) of #14.

  • Restore system using time machine

I am having a bit of printing issues.  I will print something that is an inch by an inch but instead of the printer finishing the print and feeding the paper out, it prints a faint blue tint all the way down until the page feeds all the way throught to then end of the page.
So i updated my printer drivers and it worked just fine for a day.  then it went back to how it was.  How do i get back to a back up where it was working correctly?  This is my first time with a mac, i'm coming from windows and it was super easy to do an entire system restore - Mac, not so much.
Any ideas how to help me?

Have a read here How do I restore my entire system?

    Use Migration Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413
If you previousley backed up from OS X Lion you won't be able to restore to a Snow Leopard partition

  • OS 10.6 - Please help - problem restoring system from time machine!

    Hi there,
Today I installed a little program to convert flac audio files to mp3. When I ran the program the computer froze, so I rebooted but then I could move the cursor but not click on any menus or icons on the desktop, they just wouldnt respond - so basically I couldnt use the computer. After re-booting a few times with the same result I decided to reinstall the system using time machine from an external hard drive. I reinstalled OSX, then reinstalled Snow Leopard, then reinstalled the system from a previous save from Time Machine. It said the installation was successful, but when the computer restarted a message comes up saying "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again". Ive done this about 5 times now but it always just says the same message without starting properly. WHAT DO I DO???? I really need to use my computer tomorrow so any help is hugely appreciated!!! TIA
PS. i have done a hardware test in "loop mode" and it says everything is fine

how exactly did you reinstall the system from TM? please give details. the correct way to do it is to boot from the snow leopard DVD and use the "restore system from backup" utility in the Utilities menu. there is no need to reinstall anything prior to using that utility. the restore utility wipes your hard drive and restores it to the state it was in at the backup time.

  • Restoring MBP with Time Machine but apps are missing

    Hi,
I have multiple problems, so I'll keep it brief.
RAM failed on my early 08 MBP. It corrupted the parttion thing and wiped my HDD. Nice.
Apple replaced RAM & HDD under warranty.
Have data backed up using Time Machine, but not the apps (I thought I was saving space that way, big mistake).
Restored from scratch using install disks + Time Machine but I have very few apps now, i,e. no Address book, Mail, Calendar etc, i.e. the important stuff.
Is there a way I can cherry pick those apps from somewhere to reinstall them while retaining my data on the MBP?
Or do I have to start over, do a clean install using disks and then cherry pick my data off the TM backup?
Oh, an the **** install disk is now stuck in the thing. Ggggrrrrr. Assuming I can get that out, what's the best course of action?
    Thanks very much in advance.

That's the weird thing, Although the install disks have the logos of iChat, Mal etc on the initial screen, once you click continue and go through it, even using the 'custom' options, the onyl apps on my disks are: upgrades to iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand & iDVD plus iWeb. No Mail, Address Book etc.
    Anyone else had this experience?

  • Restoring itunes using time machine

    Hi everyone,
I'm not hugely computer literate so please be gentle.
I managed to delete my ENTIRE itunes folder... apps, music, playlists, etc. Is it possible to restore itunes exactly as it was? I have a time machine back up from yesterday that would work.
So far I've managed to use TM to get all the music, apps and video back so I'm not stressed but it was basic and messy and not as organised as itunes was before I deleted everything.
So can you help? Can I restore itunes using time machine or not?

    TheShield wrote:
Hi, im actually in the same boat here, im in the process of re installing my OS and i want to restore Iphoto and itunes as it was. So correct me if im wrong, all i have to do is on my Mac go to this folder (<MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music )and than jump into time machine ? That would take me directly to the folder i have in view on my mac ? Once i hit restore, will this restore all my apps, songs, iphone and ipod back ups etc ? Thanks for your help all.
    Probably not.
How and why are you reinstalling OSX?
Assuming you erased your internal HD before installing OSX, your best bet is to use +Setup Assistant+ when it reboots to transfer your apps, users, and data from your backups. See #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you don't do that, but set up a user account instead, that account probably won't be recognized as the same one on your backups, so you won't have permission to restore from them.

  • Questions about "Restore System From Time Machine"

Looking to fix an apparent system corruption problem on my work machine, I discovered the "Utilities > Restore System From Time Machine" option of the Leopard installation disc. I have some questions that are not answered in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1177:
    1. Does this option erase the hard drive and install a fresh system from DVD, or do I need to do that in a separate step?
    2. What about software updates - when are they applied?
    3. Will third-party system extensions be reinstalled OK?
    4. I tried launching the process on my home machine, just to see how it works. At work I have a dedicated disk for Time Machine, but at home I have a Time Capsule, serving two Macs via Ethernet. I've also configured the TC to give us a shared volume; so in normal operation I have two network volumes, <Username>, containing Time Machine's sparsebundle file for that user's Mac, and "Shared". When I boot from the installation DVD and run "Utilities > Restore System From Time Machine", the backup volume list only shows the "Shared" volume. If I select it, I'm prompted for my TC username and password; I enter it, TC spins up, and then nothing. I cannot continue the restoration process, and reselecting the "Shared" volume does nothing. ???
Thanks in advance for your help.
    -- Phil

For the record, here's what I've found out so far:
    1. The "Restore System From Time Machine" option seems to want to restore everything, including the system, from the Time Machine backup. I wanted a clean system install, so I did an "Erase & install" followed by a "Restore from Time Machine" in the Migration Assistant. That got me most, but not all, of my settings back; exceptions include the printer configurations, the desktop picture, and the Dock settings.
    2. Software updates can be applied after the new system is rebooted.
    3. Most 3rd party extensions seem to have been restored OK, but some (like MacFuse) were not.
    4. I'd still be grateful for any hints concerning how to get "Restore from Time Machine" to work with a Time Capsule.

  • HT201250 i would like to use time machine but also back up other file to my external drive?

I just got a WD T3 external hard drive and I would like to use time machine but also back up other files that to the drive.  Can anyone help me out.
    Thanks Mark

You would need to go to your Applications folder>Utilities>Disk Utility> and there create Two Partitions on your external hard drive, naming them differently.  Then you could go back to your desktop, open the dock, right click on the Time Machine icon and select "Open Time Machine Preferences". In there select the external hard drive Partition that you want to use for TM.  The other external drive partition will be available for other uses.
    Hope this helps

  • Restored system from Time Machine backup disk but the system could not start-up

On MacBook Pro early 2008, restored the entire system from Time Machine backup disk to the entire disk.
The previous system on the backup disk had FileVault turned on.
The restore completed successfully and I was prompted to restart the system via the new restored system disk.
I heard the normal start-up sound, then the Apple logo, but it stuck at the logo screen. And the cooling fan run at almost full speed?
I have been waiting for a few hours, guessing it might FileVault the disk.
Finally I have to shutdown the machine as it stuck at the logo screen forever.
Anyone has the same issue? Any ideas?

BTW, I also tried Repair the system disk, Fix permissions via Disk Utility.
I guess I must lose some files either during the backup or the restore.

I "highlighted" this file in Finder FIRST, and then leaving Finder Open, I also opened Time Machine and when TM opened, Finder was displayed in it as seen above and I could then select dates going back to Restore this file from just fine.
    Hope this helps

  • Restored system from Time Capsule but now lost access to the backup files

Last week, my drive flaked out and I had to restore my system from my Time Capsule. Now everything is back to normal except that I've noticed that upon trying to auto backup my Mac Pro, it says the disk is full. When I use Time Machine to access my old files, it appears I no longer have access to anything I had previous to restoring my system from my Time Capsule. I believe the link to the old backup file is broken and it's trying to create a new full backup file, in addition to keeping the old file.
Is this normal behaviour after a full restore from a Time Capsule or can I still somehow relink my computer to the file from which it was restored, and still have access to my backup files?

Yes; everything you restored is treated as changed and will be backed-up again: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338 Time Machine most likely deleted all but the last backup, trying to make room for the new one.

Exactly how did you restore? Did you restore your entire system, starting with your Snow Leopard Install disc?
If you didn't, it's possible the account you're using is not recognized as the same one on your backups.
Can you see the last backup? If not, see #E2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • Web Sharing broken after Restore System from Time Machine

If you do a complete System Restore from a Time Machine backup, and had Web Sharing turned on, it won't work after the restore. The problem is the restore doesn't put back a folder for Apache logs. It should be in /var/log (or /private/var/log). Without the folder there, Apache won't start and you'll get an error when trying to access anything on the local website:
Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://localhost/control/” because it could not connect to the server “localhost”.
To fix the problem, use Terminal:
    cd /var/log
    sudo mkdir Apache2
    sudo apachectl restart
Then Apache will be happy and you'll be back in business!

The problem has gone after updated to 10.9.4

  • FCP X Crash. Restored with Time Machine, but Timeline still empty.

    Hi!
I just started with FCP X (Trial Version).
After 2 days of hard work I had a crash (spinning wheel, forced closing).
    The Timeline is empty now.
I restored the folders "Final Cut Projects" & "Final Cut Events" completely with Time Machine, but no matter how far I go back, the timeline remains empty.
(event and imported media are visible, though)
Does FCP X save project data anyplace else on my mac ???
    Thank you in advance ...
