Kernel panic won't go away and can't boot?
I am not sure what OS I have. It's an iMac and only a year and a half old. I know it doesn't have leopard and that's about it. Anyway, my problem started two days ago. I got the notification that updates were available so I went ahead and did it. I walked out of the office while it did its thing. Then I heard it say something like "Can't install updates". I was 2 rooms away so that may be wrong. Then it went to restart like normal but it did not boot up. It went to a gray screen with a black box in the middle that said you need to restart your computer in about 4 languages. Well, I did that seemingly a million times and it's still doing it. So I asked someone for help and he gave me these instructions,
1. Restart, and hold down AppleOption+PR to reset the Pram
2. Restart and hold down Apple+S once it brings you to a command prompt, type this:
/sbin/fsck -yf
This command will run a file system check and repair any problems.
3. Restart and hold down AppleOption+OF
when command prompt shows up on screen type:
reset-nvram (then press Enter)
set-defaults (then press Enter)
reset-all (computer will reboot)
The problem comes at step two.. it will not allow me to type anything it. I get something that says "Package 0 didn't get HPET". I can type about 4 letters in and then it restarts that "package 0 didn't get HPET" so I actually can't get the /sbin/fsck -yf part in to even attempt step 3. I bought this computer from someone so I have to disc with it. I've left a voicemail to see if he can fix it or if he has the disc still.
I've never had an issue with this thing before and I've had it since August. It's been an awesome computer and then, this. I can't afford to have it fixed for a few weeks yet and I really need to be able to use it. Classes just started and I need access to my online ones. I was lucky to be able to use what I am on now but I've had to go to someone else's apartment to do so. ANY help would be wonderful. I'm ready to shoot the thing. LOL.
You will need the original OS X installer disc that came with the computer or the installer disc you used for the version of OS X presently installed. Since you've provided no machine information other than "iMac" and no information on the version of OS X you are using this advice may or may not work:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
If you cannot start the computer from an installer disc without getting a kernel panic, that means you have a hardware failure - most likely bad RAM.

Last edited by angelfalls (2012-07-13 17:09:56)Yeah that's what I meant. Try to burn a new cd at a slower speed. When the new one is done create a hashsum of the new burn and compare it to the iso you used to burn it with. I only say this because a few times in the past when I had sr0 errors while booting live cds it was because the disk was messed up and I had to burn it again.

Apple Picture won't go away and won't turn on!
Help! First my nano was stuck in disc mode, took it to the apple store, they got out and said it just needed to charge .... now the Apple picture won't go away and I can't turn it on. I 've been letting it charge for two to three hours! What's wrong
I ended up having the same problem last weekend as well. My 80 gig iPod was acting weird from the very beginning (not remembering view settings), and its only a few months old.
I took it to the Apple Store, they ran a diagnostic, and it turned out it had corrupted drive. Thankfully I had applecare and they replaced it. I picked it up today, and guess what... This one doesnt remember the view settings either. -
Kernel panic after 10.5.3 install - can't get to desktop
When 10.5.3 came out I ran Software Update, and it installed itself and then asked me to restart my system. So I did. But before my MBP finished restarting, a gray curtain came down and told me that I had to... restart... my... system. (It looked like a kernel panic screen.)
I restarted and the same thing happened. After a couple of iterations of this I realized that something was broken and it wasn't going to fix itself, so I booted up in Safe Mode. That worked OK. It's what I'm using right now. Things seem to work normally except that certain functions, like playing audio, are disabled.
How do I troubleshoot this? Thanks.OK, here's the panic log for the first kernel panic after the 10.5.3 download. Does this help?

I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer - MacBook Pro with lion.
I did a command r after doing some research but got nervous that it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.
I was nervous because it asked me for language for software use before any options were presented (such as repair via disk utility). It looked similar to an OS install. So I powered off....Is there a risk at command r will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is

Kernel panic at startup from HD and disc
Hi
My (early 2008) Mac Pro recently froze and wouldn't boot from the HD. I managed to start it once from a Snow Leopard install disc and carry out a disk repair on the HD. Now it won't boot from the HD or the install disc. When I try to boot it from HD it freezes, and when I try to boot it from CD I get a kernel panic. Dont have the original install disc so can't run Apple Hardware Test. But did manage to boot in target disc mode fine and get the kernel panic logs:

Guessing I have a hardware issue, but seems to be 2 different problems when I boot from HD or install disc. Can anyone tell me what these logs mean/
Thnx
SimonI am having the same problems as Simon_S, except, so far, nothing is fixing things.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my first HD, and Snow Leopard on the second. The third drive is empty ATM, and the 4th is my old HD from my G5.
I can access Ubuntu the way I always have (option key, choose drive, select Ubuntu on GRUB.) I can only start up SL by going to the GRUB like I would for Ubuntu, but choosing Mac OSX instead.
The comp freezes if I try to just start up by pressing the power button, or if I press option and choose the Mac drive. Same for if I go to Startup Disk in System Preferences, choose the Mac HD and restart.
I have done a PRAM reset (after which the opening "ding" is louder, for some reason) as well as an SMC reset.
I've uninstalled Parallels through the terminal, to try to make sure it's all gone.
Trying to start up the install disk causes a kernal panic.
Trying to run a hardware test causes a freeze. If I'm still holding the "D" key when it freezes, I hear a tapping noise.
The computer freezes when trying to start up in safe mode. I THINK I'm giving it enough time. The spinning gear/sun thing is replaced by a bar, which fills to about 1/4 to 1/3 full, then stops. I wait a few minutes, but when nothing progresses, I shut it down.
Disk Utility claims that all of the drives are ok, but Ubuntu's scan gives me a "value" on the error read rate that is definitely NOT zero, so I'm thinking there is a problem with the HD the Mac OS is on. The "value" on the Ubuntu HD is zero.
Prior to my start up problems, I was wrestling with graphics/video card issues on Ubuntu. Those haven't been resolved yet. I've stopped messing with those while I try to figure out what is going on now. I'll leave out the details for now, but if you think they might be relevant, let me know.
While in SL the way I currently start it up, I can't put the computer to sleep. In Ubuntu, I can't start back up from suspend.
On SL, the system is not detecting any sound devices, in or out.
I'm limited on what I can do as far as fixing things. Funds are short, and I don't have the Extended Care. This comp is a hand-me-down after my dad got one of those new macs that are all in the monitor.
I'm hoping for any input or advice I can get. Is the Mac HD FUBAR? Could I format it from the Ubuntu HD and install SL through the Ubuntu terminal? Whatever I end up doing, I have to come out of this with a working machine. Dad's not going to be moving up to a new machine for at least 3 years (his usual time frame :P) and if this thing croaks, I'm stuck sharing my husband's Windows machine again. Please save me from Windows! -
I purchased it in December and three days ago it kernel panicked twice. After the second event, it will not boot at all. The charge cord is green when it's plugged in and seems to indicate the battery is fine. When it went into kernel panic, the trackpad locked up. I had a technician open it up to see if there were any obvious issues and everything looked ok visually. I can't boot it into safe mode or anything involving powering the machine on, as it is not responding to anything. I have a major test coming up in five days that I am taking on this laptop and am desperate for answers. Any information you can offer at all would be helpful.
Try SMC and NVRAM resets:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
Then try a safe boot again:

Ciao. -
Attempted update to 10.4.11 via Software Update. Machine crashed (screen went black, nothing made the machine responsive). Forced power down, powered back up, "need to restart computer". Great.
Disk Warrior rebuild, permissions repair, restart, KERNEL PANIC. Boot from OSX install disc and am greeted with "unable to install software on this computer" giving two options to restart or select startup disk. No matter, ran disk utility, repaired disk, repaired permissions, restart via Macintosh HD, KERNEL PANIC!!!!!!!!!!! UGH.
Now what?? I can use target disk mode to backup contents of computer to another but I really don't want to go to the extent of reinstalling OSX and reloading my data to the machine from the backup. Any ideas? Need to figure this out before tomorrow, any help is appreciated.Assuming this doesn't resolve the issue, what's the procedure for reinstalling OSX AND keeping my data intact? Can backup everything using target disk mode, just don't know how to re-load it once reinstalled.
Or even if there's a way to reinstall OSX without having to backup the data and re-load it. Thanks -
17" Intel iMac Kernel Panic, Freezing at Grey Screen and Beeping!
Hi there,
I have a new 17" Intel iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 250 GB, 1GB Memory with OS X 10.4.8) that keeps getting those "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." messages.
It all started on Sunday when I tried to wake the computer (the computer went on Sleep by itself) and got that message so I restarted the computer but it froze on the grey screen (even before I got the Apple) and it beeped 3 times and then the light on front just kept blinking 3 times. I finally was able to erase and re-install OS X and everything was fine until I left the computer for a while, it went to sleep again, and then the message came back. I restarted and it seems to be fine but I'm worried the beeping and freezing will come back.
The first time this happened, I didn't know enough to "log" the kernel panics but I do know that I deleted a lot of the applications (iWeb, Garage Band, etc.) that I didn't need and fidged with the Share folder in the Users folder. I use a Flash Drive a lot and always left it connected to the keyboard's USB drive. Also leave my iPod Nano connected. After I reinstalled everything, I only deleted the Garage Band demos, installed and deleted the Firefox 2.0 and Opera (wanted to just stick with Firefox 1.0) applications. Only used the Flash Drive a little and haven't connected my iPod on yet. Trying to isolate the problem. I can't remember doing anything else.
Here's the log from the latest kernel panic:

I don't know what this part is about because I don't have a Printer hooked up to the computer.
The only other thing I can think of is I also installed WireTap and StuffIt before the initial crashing. I heard StuffIt was causing problems on some Intel Macs. Also changed a lot of the icons and changed the icon for Preview. I "verified" my hard drive and "verified and repaired the disk permissions" (I'm not that knowledgeable about computers let alone Macs). I also checked my hardware by pressing D while the grey CD OS X was running and get this:
4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040
usually during the initial testing but when I restart and try it again, it's fine.
Well, that's all I can think of. Any thoughts?
Thanks a lot!
-KimThanks for the reply and links!
After the first problems, I re-seated the RAMs. Does this mean I have to buy new memory? This is a pretty new iMac, bought it in May and have only been using it for maybe two months. Haven't done a whole lot with it but I usually keep a lot of programs open at the same time. I have Adobe CS3 installed too and it says it needs at least 1 GB of memory. I've heard people saying it's best to have as much RAM (this Mac can only take up to 3GB) when using those programs. Maybe it's getting too heavy? Should I only keep one program open at a time? Also, which part of my post indicated that it was memory problems? What the "panic.log" stated or that "4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040" stuff? Anything else I can do to not let this happen again?
Thanks again! -
Kernel Panic after 10.5.7 update--can't reboot.
Hi,
I updated to 10.5.7 the other day. Since then, I had 3 Kernel Panics that were recovered from. However, now I can no longer boot from the internal drive, an external drive or the Leopard install DVD since a Kernel Panic that happened while emptying the trash. My computer begins to boot up as I see the gray screen, but part way through the process, I get the Kernel Panic screen. Resetting the SMC/PRAM and NVRAM, disconnecting devices, unplugging the computer for awhile and re-seated the RAM didn't help. I'm not sure what to do next. Thanks in advance for your help. You probably had some issues with your system before the update and did not know it. Updates have a way of bringing these things out.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here's a great MacFixIt article.

Kernel Panic on Mounting volume read and write
First I installed Windows with Boot Camp and Windows, than installed Parallels for the Mac, and it booted windows. As it was configuring Windows to be used with Parallels it froze the machine, and the only choice I had was to reboot the system by holding down the power button.
Now, each time I boot it up Darwin panics. After a call to apple support, I booted it into single user mode, and checked with fsck and it said it was fine. I than tried rebooted it and got the verbose message, and it happened when it attempted to mount the disk.
I went Back into single user mode. I tried to remount the partition read/write and it caused a panic. I think the partition is corrupt and I was wondering what I can do since it does the same thing on the install disk. Are there any Apple or open source solutions that may help me fix this disk?
Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)If you try to boot from the OS X Installer Disc and the computer panics then the problem is more likely hardware related.
You might try getting to the diagnostics: Insert the OS X Installer Disc One into the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended diagnostics.
If you are unable to do even this without a kernel panic then take the computer in for repair.

Kernel Panics Again After Clearing HD and Reinstalling OS X Mavericks
Hello,
I went to the Apple store the other day to try to get some help with finding out why my MacBook Pro has been getting kernel panics fairly consistently since upgrading to Mavericks months ago. All they did was tell me to erase the HD and reinstall Mavericks, and not fifteen minutes after doing so, it happened again.
Any help would be appreciated. This is really getting on my nerves.
