Kernel_task hogging my CPU, over 300%

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone can help me solve an issue with my mac.
I noticed that my kernel_task was really draining my CPU, hogging around 300%, barely leaving around 2% of RAM for the user. After doing a bit of research I found that kernel_task basically manages a load of extensions for your hardware and system programs.
Here's some pieces that i've learnt about the issues, as well as the steps that i've taken so far to try to resolve it.
- When I boot in safe mode the computer performs well, suggesting this could be a 3rd party extension issue
- Created a user profile, where the issue still occurs suggesting this is a 3rd party system extension
- Re-installed OSx to see if that would help it - nope
- Deleted the majority of my 3rd party apps, one by one to see if these were the issue. Still not fixed it as yet.
- I've not added any new RAM recently - I'm aware this can be a common cause of kernel_task issues
When I restart here's what the console is saying...

MacBook Pro early 2011 2.3 GHz Core i7, 10.6.8. It had been running fine since I got it, but a month ago it started having those fits of sluggishness that many have described on this thread. Within a few days it was almost impossible to work on it. Activity Monitor was telling me two things: 1. iTunes was taking over 100% of CPU power — this was resolved as I have explained here:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/17681010
(note that I hadn't been aware that it was a thread dedicated to "iTunes for Windows" when I posted it).
2., Activity Monitor kept on showing peaks of anything between 500 and over 700% of CPU use by the kernel_task process, especially when watching full-screen videos on the external Cinema Display, when Firefox had many open tabs, when Spotlight indexing of a 1Tb external HD was going on, or when the battery was getting loaded.
A complete cache cleanup with Onyx did help briefly, but immediately after applying the latest firmware update, I was back to point zero.
Thanks to someone else's post, I followed another line of thought: the kernel_task process was maybe revving up because the CPU was getting too hot. It then took a bit more detective work and trial and error to figure that there was a vicious circle of sorts: kernel_task was going wild because it wanted to cool the CPU down, somehow, but its own hyperactivity was contributing to keeping the CPU overloaded.
The next logical step was to open the case (MBP switched off of course, and with due respect to all other precautions — iFixIt screwdriver kit highly recommended), only to find out that there was plenty of dust inside there, especially on both fans. I "scanned" the whole of it with the vacuum-cleaner's crevice nozzle, cautiously keeping it at a distance of 3-4 cm above the board (thus avoiding touching any electronic part). But I did apply the nozzle against the fans (one at a time), in such a way that the very suction had them rotate at high speed, and until all the dust was removed from them.
That was three weeks ago, and ever since my MBP has again been running like when it was born and purring like a happy kitten. Now the kernel_task process seldom runs over a single-digit percentage.
There seems to be a machine-specific aspect to all of this, though. Barely a meter away in this same office, there is a MBP, 3.06 Gb Intel Core 2 Duo, that is one year older, but otherwise with the same specs and setups, except for the fact that it has two external screens connected to it, not just one (but it's hardly ever used for heavy video streaming). Moreover, the resident cat shows a propensity to use its keyboard as a sleeping pad. We opened it too, and it had slightly less dust then the newer machine, still enough to make it worth vacuum-cleaning. Yet, this older MBP has never showed a sign of heating up and/or of CPU slowdown. Go figure…

  • MacBook Pro Kernel_Task over 300% ; laptop running very slow

My new (4 week old) MacBook Pro suddenly this weekend started running very slow with the fan running constantly. I found the "kernel_task" was running the CPU over 300%. I tried various methods mentioned in different threads but nothing worked. I eventually went all the way to wiping the disk and reinstalling the OS. This has NOT fixed the problem. I do not know where to go next. I am posting a copy of the EtreCheck report I ran, and I am looking for any help.
The next step is taking this thing back to the Apple store. I love my MacBook, but not when it is not lagging like something running Windows ME. I expected more out of this machine than this.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
    high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • Python, kernel_task hogging CPU

Recently, I've noticed Cee Pee You has reported 100% processor usage which doesn't decrease until I log out. When this happens Activity Monitor shows that both python and kernel_task each occupy over 45% CPU activity, leaving little for anything else.
Usually, I have Safari, Mail, Acquisition, and Activity Monitor open. Quitting any or all of them doesn't decrease the CPU load so I can't tell which one has caused Python to go wild. I have all the latest updates for Tiger including QT.
Can anyone guess what's happening? Is there anything else I can do to determine what program is misbehaving?

    John Galt wrote:
How can I find out what application is calling Python?
Try opening Activity Monitor, then switch to display "All Processes, Hierarchically". See if Python is indented just below and well to the right of another process. The upper process is its parent. Don't be fooled by the fact that the Python process will not have an icon, so it might look a bit indented. It's the process title that will be indented. As an example, look to "Activity Monitor" and "pmTool". pmTool is started by Activity monitor.
If you want to see what arguments were used to call the Python process, which could give more clues, use this Terminal command:
    <pre class="command">ps -auxww | grep -i python</pre>
Finally, you can look and see if the Python process is reading or writing any files using the command:
    <pre class="command">sudo fs_usage pid</pre>
Where "pid" is the process ID number of the python you're seeing hog the CPU. If you don't restrict by the PID, you'll be overwhelmed by the amount of reading and writing going on. When you're asked for your password, don't be alarmed that it won't echo back to you when you type it in. That's for security. To stop fs_usage, type the "control" - "c" combination on your keyboard.

  • Kernel task consumes over 300 %!

    Hi everyone!
Greetings from Sweden, Stockholm (Where its hot, 32 degrees celsius outside today!)
    My second time posting here.
So I have a Macbook Pro from early 2011 that I myself upgraded with 2 8GB Corsair Ram and a year later, a Samsung SSD Evo 500 Gb (as my main, dont have a secondary disk), after some trouble in the beginning with the SSD and 3 reinstallation of Maverick later I got it to work smoothly, now a month later my computer has just started to slow down soo much. Startup time is really fast, maybe 20 seconds, but just browsing the internet or doing basic task takes so much time, its ridiculous. When watching the Activity Monitor I see that kernel task its often at 300 percent, and at one time it was over 500 percent!
Been searching the forum for this problem but it seems like most people dont have the same issue as me and the solution often being to buy more RA,
also the only thing I have for startup is "itunes helper", nothing more, no Cleanmydrive or something like that since I know how much RAM those programs can consume.
I use my Macbook Pro for a lot of heavy audio editing with Logic Pro and Pro Tools, and need it so bad for work.
is there something Ican do? Am a student so if needed I have to buy a new Macbook Pro but my wallet wouldnt like it...

This condition can be due to:

You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • When ACD 30" monitor gets hot, kernel_task utilizes all CPU on Mac Book Air

I've been having a problem with my system slowing down due to the system "kernel_task" taking over all available CPU (up to 150% of a CPU on my dual core Mac Book Air). I've figured out some of the parameters of the problem, and it seems related to having the Air hooked up to an external monitor:
    1) It seems to only happen when the Air is attached to an external monitor, which in my case is a 30" Cinema Display (which is through a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter -- not sure if this is relevant)
    2) It only happens when the monitor itself is physically warm to the touch (actually the back gets quite hot).
    3) When the kernel_task takes over, and I unplug the Air from the DVI Adapter, kernel_task usually settles down (to 5 - 10% CPU utilization) within 30 - 60 seconds
    4) If I plug the Air back into the DVI adapter at this point (while the monitor is still warm), kernel_task CPU utilization immediately jumps up to 130 - 150%.
    5) If I wait until the monitor is cool before plugging the Air back into the DVI adapter, kernel_task stays in the normal 2 - 10% CPU utilization range for 30 - 90 minutes and the process starts all over again (at this point the monitor is usually quite warm / hot again)
Rebooting doesn't seem to help (if the monitor is hot, kernel_task starts hogging the CPU right after booting up).
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Any thoughts about possible remedies, or ways to further isolate the problem?
I appreciate your reading this somewhat bizarre tale of woe.
    Thanks,
    Marc

After upgrading to 10.5.7 this week my MacBook Air goes into kernel_task spin-mode within minutes even when the machine is idle. There are many discussions about this, the longest of which is here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9458471&#9458471

How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • I had an iTunes account on an old computer with over 300 songs and I now have a MacBook Pro and when i signed into iTunes all the songs I had before were gone. How can I get my old songs back?

I had an iTunes account on an old computer with over 300 songs then when I updated my computer to the MacBook Pro it deleted all my songs when I signed into iTunes. Is there a way I can get those songs back?

Did you put the songs on the new computer?
You should copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • HT201317 I have over 300 photos and 87 videos on my iphone 5.  each time I plug in for battery I get a message saying not enough space, need to buy more, so I did yesterday.  While attempting to do icloud storage again it said would take 83 hours.

I have over 300 photos and 87 videos. When I recharge the battery I am geting the message to buy more storage to because not enough icloud space.  So I did yesterday.  That went ok, but the new message tells me it will take 83 hours.  Perplexed I went thru the settings and turned off apps and their data that I didn't realize where on.  Now I'm not sure if I needed to purchase more storage but it is still taking forever to complete the task.  Am I on the right track with this, meaning will take forever to store all my photos or what ?  The only other item I have on to store is contacts.  Can you assist me ?  Thanks - emoslim

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first back up to iCloud may take some considerable time. Just how long isn't really possible to say without knowing how much is in your back up and your connection speed.
What many people don't realise is that upload speeds are often significantly less than download speeds, so for example a user may have a download speed of 40 Mbps, but only 1 Mbps for uploading. As a rough guide it will take around 2 ¼ hours to upload 1 GB of data at 1 Mbps.

    Hi Michael,
I'm glad iTunes is working now!  If you want to locate iTunes plug-ins on your computer, you can find them in the following locations (you may not have the iTunes Plug-ins folder if you do not have plug-ins):
    Mac:
    /Users/username/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins/
    /Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins/
One thing I also wanted to mention is that the "Users/username/Library" is hidden in Lion and Mountain Lion.  You can access it using these steps:
OS X Mountain Lion: What is the Library folder?
The Library folder contains files used by OS X and your apps, including your personal fonts and preferences. The Library folder is hidden. If you need to open it, make sure you are in the Finder, hold down the Option key, and then choose Go > Library.
You can find the full article here:

  • Mail Can't Open & com.apple.internetaccount process hogging 100% CPU

Desperately seeking answers after Mavericks install..
My mail crashed and now won't open at all. I've tried most (if not all) the suggestions posted by others.  Haven't tried deleting and reinstalling mail yet, as this will be my last resort since I have a work account in it that is not on IMAP.
And another troubling issue is my macbook's fan is going crazy and feels like its overheating.
Looking at "Activity Monitor" I see a process "com.apple.internetaccounts" that is taking 100% CPU and 1.6GB of memory!!
No idea what this process is and can't seem to quit it.

@Drewli77 yup that's it. When Mail opened I chose Google/Gmail and let Mail set the account up for me.
Before doing that I had noticed com.apple.internetaccounts hogging the CPU. I went into System Preferences > Internet Accounts, waited 10 minutes for the spinning ball to stop, then deleted the Google account in there. There was only one Google account in there, despite the fact that I have four Google accounts set up in Mac Mail. Anyway this one account seemed to be what was slowing down that preference pane. After deleting Accounts.plist I re-added my accounts in Mail, which added them to the Internet Accounts preference pane, but now that preference pane (and Mail) open just fine without hogging resources.
What annoys me is the fact that hitting Delete on a message sends it to Trash, which in Mavericks corresponds to Gmail's Trash, meaning it gets purged every month (regardless of the setting you choose in Mac Mail). I've been using Option-Delete to Archive it, but I wish I could just use Delete for that, since I always Archive and rarely Trash messages. I would set another folder to be used for Trash, but sadly, all of the options under Mailbox > "Use this mailbox for" are greyed out.

  • Why are we paying over $300 a month for a family plan that doesn't include call blocking or decent voicemail services?

I am a member of a shared family plan which as I see it posted our bill is over $300 a month, which does not include unlimited data, family protection (which allows you to permanently block numbers vs there 30 or 90 day limit if you are not covered) <---- this requires you to constantly be on alert of something so ridiculous that it shouldn't be concerned with, and finally they do not offer an upgraded voicemail service.  So my voicemail asks me to enter pin than right to messages.  It does not tell me the following:  The date the call was made, the time the call was made, nor any other pertinent information regarding the call aside from the number and than the message.  It's frustrating because I miss a lot of calls these days due to volume controls and silent modes and ring tones that aren't loud enough that I need to know when calls are received.  I don't ever remember having to pay for an upgraded voicemail service, that's like hiring a firm to handle all my incoming calls.  I want my answering machine back.  I have many other issues to include Verizon's online chat service which has at least one major issue.  I won't bring that up here.  The question is how much more money can they get for a simple cell phone plan?  For christ's sake.
Message was edited by: NoMoreOriginalNames Grammar corrections

The free voicemail is basic which gives you the date and time of the message. If you want more you should pay for more. Also, some Android phones with KitKat have free Visual Voicemail.
Thank you for your feedback, but my phone gives me no choice and it most certainly does not state the date and time that the message was received.  The only way for me to know that is if I happen to check exactly the phone log around the same time that the message was left, else it is buried underneath other more recent and answered calls.  And seriously man, the whole pay more idea is getting a bit far-fetched.  There is no reason why I should be able to buy a portable mini answering machine for a one time payment of $14.99 with a reusable blank tape, they don't have these and we'd look ridiculous carrying them around with everything else, but the point is we are giving permission to charge for some ridiculous things that should not be paid more for.  My old answering machine worked just fine, and more importantly I have never paid for an "upgraded" voicemail service.  As I mentioned if I want that I can hire a service to do that, but I don't need that.  I hope you can understand my growing concerns.  We pay for every little in-app purchase, we are being programmed to pay for everything that should already be includedfdasf in an initial price, brought home and enjoyed for its duration.  Instead wesdfsdf are paying monthly fees and dues on objects that aren't covered by warranties or insurances which eventually break and leave people struggling to pick up the pieces.  These are serious issues because people now rely so much on their phones (of course this is all my opinion) that we've become depandent on them.  Anyway, thanks, appreciate all the feedback.
As for blocking this is what it states on my plan under the blocking feature tab:
You can block calls and message from up to 5 phone numbers at no charge.
Expiration. Blocks expire after 90 days. Be sure to reapply the block if you wish to continue the service restriction. To permanently block numbers, subscribe to FamilyBase*.
    Limitations.
You cannot block numbers within your account or non-10 digit numbers such as 911,411 or #MIN (checks minutes used).
Apple® iMessage® won't be blocked. Messages from this service can be blocked by disabling the iMessage feature from within the Settings>Messages menu of your Apple device.
Unblocking. To unblock a number, highlight and delete the number, then click "Submit".
So there's the limits, but even worst is they don't include a simple field where I can put the name of the individual I am blocking.  So when it comes time to maybe rotate one out (this should be an unlimited number), one of the many 5 I can choose to block, I might not remember who is who or what is what.  I have a lot of responsibilities in my life, this is not one that should be pushed on the consumer.  It's ridiculous.

  • AIR iOS hard crashes: wakeup - Observed 503/sec over 300 secs

    Hi,
for a project I had to download a file with around 3GB.
So I decided to write a chunk based download controller, which easily does the following:
    - open an URLStream
    - Load the file by URLRequest
    - Wait for the progress events and check, that we have more than 5MB in the buffer
    - Write the bytes to an local file by using an Bytearray+Filestream combination
Additional I have implemented a workaround for the file size limit regarding to the Android specs,
that the local files is chunked when, the file exceeds the file size limit.
This solution works fine in this cases / test systems:
    - Desktop - Windows
    - Desktop - Mac
    - Android - Debug
    - Android - Release
    - iOS 8.1.3 - Debug - fast interpreter mode
But when I try to compile and run / debug the app for iOS with the following modes:
    - Release build Store
    - Release build AdHoc
    - Debug build without fast interpreter
The app crashes hard during the download.
I isolated my download controller and created a simple test app, which is using a simple sprite
    and runs the download controller.
During the download the app is not completely hard crashing but the xcode console detects 1-2 crashes:

The debugger did not detect any error.
    I tested AIR 15, 16.
Maybe this is a iOS restriction regarding to the new battery consumption limitations for apps.
    So I tried to:
    - Set the framerate to max. 30FPS
    - Extend to buffer size before write to test on ProgressEvent form 512KB to 5MB
But the crashes are staying and the observed wakeups are not reducing.
Has anyone an idea how to solve this?

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if it's iOS 8 only, and I'm having a hard time reproducing the crash at my office after letting it run for 24 hours. I only see the crash results on the iPad after the fact.
I can send the code for the project to someone, if that will help. Who would I send it to?
In the meantime, do you have any recommendations for how to force an excess number of wakeups? I figure if I can force the crash, then I can see if it helps to try the latest AIR SDK or make other changes.
Also, here is a little more info about the project:
    - Uses Starling.
    - Uses video playing in a webview (with darkredz ANE).
    - Uses Apple's Guided Access to lock out app switching.
Do any of these things seem more likely to cause issues with thread management? I'm guessing that the app never goes into background mode, since it's locked to this one app. But would the iPad going to sleep force it into background mode somehow?
    Thanks for the help.
    John

How can I delete Unread Sent emails?I have over 300...and I can't delete them!!!Please advise how to delete!!!

this might work it might not, but turn to settings, notification center, mail and turn the badge icon off and open your mail account again. then repeat but turn the badge icon on this time and see if they are still there. sorry but this might not help. you can also try logging into your email accounts on a laptop or pc and maybe then you can view what emails you are not seeing on your phone..
