Keyboard ... dead jey
My friend has an old PINK keyboard and she has the pink mouse and iMac that goes with it. Her F7 key doesn't work. It doesn't pop back up when she uses it and it doesn't function either. Is there a "easy" way to fix it or is it just dead and easier to get a new keyboard.
That link was very helpful. Thanks. I took the keyboard completely apart and found out that it was one of the little rubber things that was broken. So I just took the one off the "help" key. LOL

[SOLVED] system clone - keyboard dead
Hi,
I'm having some trouble cloning my system from a desktop pc to a notebook. I've tried this before and it sort of worked but right now I have a rather base-level problem.
Here are the symptoms:
when I copy my desktop pc's /lib tree to the notebook (using a live cd) then my keyboard is dead the next time I boot the notebook.
I used the cp command, so existing files are replaced but a file which is not in the desktop's /lib tree won't be deleted.
I did a backup of the notebook system before. I copied back the orginal /lib tree (unsing a live CD again) - so now I have all files from the desktop pc's /lib tree, but files which were on both machines are replaced again by the ones which originaly were on the notebook.
Now the keyboard works fine.
So what I know is: There is a file in /lib which is responsible for the keyboard to work and which must be ignored during the cloniing procedure.
I want to find out which one this is. How can I find out (without replacing the files one by one and checking if the keyboard still works).

Droid Virtual Keyboard Dead Zone - can't type p,l or DEL
It seems that my screen now has a dead zone in the bottom-right part of the screen. When I go to type the letters p,l or DEL, i get the letters to the left of them (o,k,m). The odd thing is that I can click directly on o,k,m and it works fine. It's almost like the keys were remapped.
Anyone else experience this one? Defective phone? I've had it for quote a while -- no cracks in it, no bad falls. Help!
Oh, and a restart or a battery pull did not fix it. Nor did a keyboard app replacement.I have almost same issue... This is my post on the htc support forums.
I just got my incredible in the mail. I was trying to enter a couple contacts. I found the letter "t" will not type. Switched to number mode. It is even worse, Can't type 5, %, ), all are in the same column. Contacts will not allow you to turn the droid on its side and use the horizontal keyboard. Tried calibrating the keyboard it makes it worse. I can touch the letter "Q" and drag my finger across the screen and every letter in that row will highlight as I drag over it except the letter "t". Same thing happens in number / symbols mode start at either the 1, !, _, drag across everything will highlight as it is touched except the 5, %, ). I have 3 other coworkers with the incredible they do not have this issue on their phones. The issue occurs for them when they try on my phone so, it is not me fat fingering. They all got theirs at least a month before me. So I am wondering if it is an issue with the new screens or just a defect in my phone?

Called htc... No help suggested factory reset which I didn't mind as I have no data on the phone yet. Did not work. Next suggestion... Download a keyboard app... The free ones are crap. Why should I have to pay extra to make the device usable? I thought a working keyboard was apart of the initial $200. -
[SOLVED] Vi and international keyboards dead keys
Hello all,
I'm learning Vi from the excellent documentation by the author himself and Mary Ann Horton at FreeBSD Documentation. However I'm facing a wall that I can't seem to get around.
Under the portuguese keyboard layout as defined by pt-latin1, the following diacritics are dead-keys:
~ (tilde)
^ (circumflex) (above the tilde, requires also the use of the SHIFT key)
` (gave accent, aka back tick) (above acute accent, requires the use of the SHIFT key)
Because they are dead keys, these diacritics aren't compatible with Vi command mode and certain CTRL combinations. They are however very useful. How can I handle this problem in Vi without remmaping these symbols to different keys (it is very important I don't remap them)? Is there a way to temporarily disable dead-keys functionality and have them function as regular one-hit keys?
My search for pt keymaps without dead keys produced 0 results. So, I don't think that is an option.
Last edited by marfig (2010-08-09 00:22:23)Well, I took a closer look at man keymaps and found a way to deal with this; I can create single modifier definitions and load them with loadkeys.
So, if I look at dumpkeys I may find the following two lines
keycode 27 = dead_acute dead_grave apostrophe
keycode 43 = dead_tilde dead_circumflex asciitilde Control_backslash
I now know the keycodes. So I can create a new file (say, pt-latin1-undead), and write this this:
plain keycode 27 = acute
shift keycode 27 = grave
plain keycode 43 = asciitilde
shift keycode 43 = circumflex
Then all I need to do is load it with:
sudo loadkeys pt-latin1-undead
This will load it on top of my current keymap, replacing only those modifiers I defined and leaving the rest intact. When I'm done and want to get back to dead_keys mode, I simply load pt-latin1 again. Tested it already and works flawlessly!
The only disadvantage I can see is that loadkeys requires root access.
Note: The actual code for circumflex is 'asciicircum'. I didn't know this and my first try with 'asciicircumflex' was giving me a syntax error on loadkeys. So I just tried 'circumflex' and it worked. Seems to be a synonym.

I dropped the keyboard of mom's LC 575. Now the machine is dead. The power button on the keyboard is stuck down. I can pry it up and press it again, but it's still dead. I replaced the keyboard, to no avail. What now? Could there be a fuse or something? I'm ordering a replacement motherboard on ebay.
If, during your debugging, you switched off the power at the rocker switch or pulled the AC power cord out, you may be suffering from a dead battery.
The Parameters that make your Mac a cinch to start and use are stored in Parameter RAM, which is maintained by an "always-on" power supply backed by a battery. Pull the AC power plug when the battery is really weak, and the parameters can get so corrupted your Mac will not start. -
G60-120US Notebook - Keyboard Dead

My built-in keyboard is dead, so I removed it to check and clean the contacts, cable etc.
Please tell me why there is literally scads of dirt, dust, lint and hairs (animal or human I can't say) caked up on the underside of the keyboard, beneath the protective backing tape. This debris can't possibly have come from me. Whatever the heck this crud is, it was stuck to the backing tape when it was applied to the keyboard, during the manufacturing process. I find it impossible to believe this is somehow deliberate. This is the original keyboard which came with my HP notebook.

As you can see in the photo, the particles and hairs are clearly visible, and this is a Chicony Electronics Corp. manufactured keyboard, model# MP-08A93US6442
I am now using a portable keyboard, but it is acting strangely, as is my mouse. I will elaborate further about these other problems soon, but first I wanted to ask you why on earth a pile of filth is stuck to the keyboard backing tape? Trackpad and keyboard dead (orange cable beneath computer)
Hi Guys,
The keyboard and trackpad from my MBP (early 2008 model) has been dead for over a while. I know the reason for this is due to a design flaw that makes an orange cable (located beneath the battery) to bent thus disrupting the connection. Does anyone have the same problem? Does someone knows if apple is aware of this problem, and if they are is there any recall? Is there anyway of fixing this?

thanksDoesn't it get bent because the battery is swollen? Have you tried removing the battery? (The Mac will run at "half-speed" without the battery installed, but you could then confirm if the trackpad works or not.)
You're well out of warrany (even with Applecare) but you could try and take it into an Apple Store and see what they can do. If it is "fixed" because of a swollen battery then it could be just as simple as a replacement battery. I had to replace the battery in my mid-2008 MBP after a little more than a year. So it wouldn't surprise me if your battery needs replacing. -
Snow Leopard Crash / Freezing Issue - Keyboard Dead - Hard Reboot Required
Good morning,
Been using Snow Leopard on a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac pretty much since the day of launch. Initially was very pleased, no real problems, seemed to run even smoother than regular Leopard, however, recently, my system has developed a bunch of issues, particularly when running word and/or transmission (possibly other apps, but I have noticed with these two so far).
The main problem is, very randomly, the system will lock-up. This can be after 1 hour or 24 hours, there is no real correlation. After the lock up, you are able to use open apps, ie Transmission, Word, Safari, Finder, etc, but they do not function correctly...for example
Word - You can click into documents, but any keyboard strokes are completely ignored.
Safari - You can browse links on default start page, etc, but you cannot create new tabs or type anything into the address bar.
Finder - You can browse folders; but you cannot perform any functions such as dragging to trash, etc.
Also worth noting, it the main menu bar at the top of the screen continues to say either "Word" or "Transmission" etc, regardless of what application you are in. Clicking on any applications icons in the dock has no response unless they were already running.
The system is unable to shut down or log off, and you cannot quit apps. The only option is to do a hard reset via holding down the power off button.
Note: My system is set to never sleep. There is no screensaver.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm a fairly new mac user so i'm not aware how to view log files etc., which may identify the problem.
Many thanks in advance.Just want to reiterate. I am seeing freeze issues with my iMac 2.8 GHZ 4GB ram and wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Had this for two years without problem. When a freeze occurs mouse is reponsive but clicks don't give result. I am unable to open window to force quit apps. It may be related to iTunes but I can't confirm. Happening again now, even as I type this I can't open other appslike console log. I add more later.

I packed my wireless low profile keyboard with the batteries taken off in a soft bag with the Powerbook. A day or two later, I put the batteries in, but the green led doesn't light on and there is no link with the Powerbook. I have pressed the on/off button for a few seconds.
Not finding the battery scheme first, I had put the batteries in the wrong way, then tried a new set of batteries, with no life sign. Is there something I should try before resigning to buy a new one? This one has only served for a few months, but over the warranty period. Thanks for any hint!
PaulThis is a strange coincidence- my keyboard also was invisible after I was away for a week. It would do the 2 min of paired flashing, then give up.
I finally got it to work after letting it sit w/o batteries for a few days, then re-pairing with the computer. ?? Perhaps the computer is forgetting the pairing? -
After upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.6 the keyboard of my MacBook Pro has stopped working...
Another problem: over the disappearance of the MacBook Pro keyboard, the system does not recognize an bluetooth keyboard ... I using, now, an old white Apple USB keyboard ...

NB305 - Keyboard dead after peculiar behavior

I washed the keyboard (and screen) with windex as I have done a few other times. I used a soft bristle brush and then wiped with paper towel.
Brought the computer out of hibernation and began reading an ebook I had been reading. Some time later, after a fair number of pages read, turning pages with right arrow key quit working.
I piddled with the ebook interface still could not turn pages with arrow keys. I then decided to reboot and see if that would re-initiate page turning with arrow keys.
On reboot, at login when trying to type my password, I would see 2 asterisks appear in the password box for each key press, even trying to bkspace over the extra character would result in 2 more characters (represented by asterisk). Even pressing enter, would add two more.
I could not get past the password..... I rebooted once more but when the login screen came up the keyboard would not respond to anything at all.
Now I have NO keyboard input at all, and have resorted to mouse and onboard keyboard which really slows any work down.
I am about to remove the keyboard and try to tell or see if I can see anything suspicious.
I could really use any ideas or coaching anyone might have.Hi
Did you try to connect and to use the external USB keyboard?
Please check this. If external USB keyboard would function, this means that keyboard controller should be ok and the problem might be related to the internal keyboard.
In such case the internal keyboard needs to be replaced
Not quite sure why the internal keyboard does not work but I cannot imagine that you damaged the keyboard while cleaning but who knowsnothing is impossible
Therefore test the notebook in connection with an external keyboard. -
My regularly used PM 9600 suddenly started emitting a "plunk-beep" sound whenever a key on the keyboard was pressed AND the key stroke would not register what it was supposed to do. The power key continued a bit still to initiate shutdown, but that now beeps, too. I tried a second keyboard with the same result. I've replugged in the keyboard and checked that all other cables are tight. I've restarted. I think the battery may be getting tired, as the clock is losing a little time, but otherwise the computer works fine using a Gyration wireless USB keyboard. Any ideas about the ADB keyboard problem, please?
Apparently there is nothing wrong with either of my wired ADB keyboards, as they both function properly on my Performa 6320. There is also apparently nothing wrong with my wired ADB mice, as they both work on my Performa AND they also both work on the ADB port of my PM9600, the port which is NOT working properly with the two ADB keyboards. This situation thus begs the question as to whether the signals from wired ADB mouse through the ADB port go to a different part of the PM9600 to be processed than to where the signals from the ADB keyboard go to in the PM9600 to be processed? Two different wired ADB mice both work on the PM9600's ADB port. Two different wired ADB keyboards both do NOT work (cause beeps from the PM9600) on the ADB port. Both these keyboards and both these mice function perfectly on the ADB port of the Performa 6320.
It also makes no difference as to whether or not the transmitters for the wireless USB mouse and keyboard are unplugged from the USB port; the keyboard still causes beeps and doesn't work; the ADB mice still work.
Thus, this seems to isolate the problem to the processing in the PM9600 of the signals coming through its ADB port from the wired ADB keyboard. Thus, what could be the problem in the PM9600 and what could be causing that? Do any preferences need to be trashed? Would running DiskWarrior help (I haven't done that yet)? Any other ideas, please? (Obviously, there appears to be no need to wash the keyboards! However, I'm curious about your making a distinction, Jeff, between air from a compressor and air from a can of compressed air and why not to use the latter?) Also, nothing has ever been spilled into the keyboards; only thing is the normal accumulation of grime on the keys from years of "dirty" fingers and house dust settling between the keys, which has been regularly vacuumed out. Also, all the pins are pristine on the keyboard's cable plugs. -
Keyboard dead after some water
My dv5-1044ca keyboard isn't functional after spilling some water on it. I unplugged it, turned it over and dismantled right after to let it dry. Reassembled 24 hrs later, and the laptop works minus the keyboard. Device manager indicates it is plugged into port and working properly though. 0 keys are working. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, updated the BIOS, but no luck. Any other suggestions? If I were to change the keyboard must it be the exact same dv5 series type (1044ca)?

View Solution.That would be the best thing to do unless the part number has been superceded with another in the maintenence & Service guide for your notebook series. Check in the addendum in the end of the first section of the guide.
I cannot give more specifics because the keyboards vary by the language and world market it is target for.

Macbook Keyboard DEAD (not using Leopard)
Several weeks ago my keyboard and trackpad stopped responding on my macbook (which is now out of warranty) but the power button still works. I bought a new topcase and installed it thinking this would fix the problem, it didn't. So last night I backed up all my files and reinstalled Leopard hoping that a fresh install would bring the keyboard back to life, this also did not work. Also noteworthy, I only erased and reinstalled the partition on my hdd for leopard and left windows on its little 10GB sector.
Any help would be much appreciated.Ok I tried this but it is actually for Leopard. As the post states that is not my case. I tried to use it anyways and it told me it can not open because I am not running 10.5
Ive come to the conclusion that my logic board may be the problem. The keyboard and trackpad are both not recognized by the system profiler.
The only thing listed under my USB bus is Bluetooth.
I ran the Hardware Check and it found no problems. As a reminder I purchased another top case. (keyboard and trackpad) and nothing was resolved.
Can anyone back me up on the guess that the logic board is toast?
