Keyboard Hardware Damage

Hi, I just got my macbook pro 13" keyboard topcase replaced at about US$350 because my S to L keys weren't working. When the service center did the diagnostics, they told me it's a hardware damage. So my question is, what causes it? It's not a liquid damage case according to the tech guy. I take care of my laptop so I'm not aware of what the cause of the damage could've been. Thanks a lot!

Nothing else; everything else works fine. the S-L keys just weren't working so the apple service center in our area did some "diagnostics" and I was told that no troubleshooting will work so a replacement was needed because it is the hardware that's damaged.

  • Potential keyboard hardware problem T410

    Dear all,
since yesterday I have been experiencing a problem with my T410, which is potentially due to
a hardware issue with the keyboard.
A few specific keys are not working anymore. These seem to be the Power On key, the Fn key,
the Alt Gr key, and the ThinkVantage key.
I am assuming it is a keyboard hardware problem, since I cannot use the Power On button to
start the laptop. Fortunately, this is possible using the fingerprint reader start-up.
When the laptop is running (using Windows 7) everything is working fine, except the mentioned
buttons. I cannot access any Fn button functions (e.g. the reading lamp) or Alt Gr symbols (e.g.
the @ symbol which is on my keyboard on the 2 button) or power down with the Power button.
    I tried various easy fixes:
    * Making sure all drivers are up to date
    * Remove and reattach the keyboard
    * Static discharge procedure (unplug all power, 10 presses and 30 sec holding of power button)
    * Checking Bios settings
    * Replace battery
Unfortunately, these did not change the situation.
I am wondering if the simultaneous malfunctioning of these specific buttons points to a certain
hardware problem. I hope a replacement of the keyboard might solve this, but it could be an
    issue with the motherboard.
    Any hints would be welcome.
    Thank you,

    Dear all,
thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, it was not the keyboard. It appears to
be a more serious problem. In fact, since yesterday the laptop does not boot correctly
anymore. The boot process is started, but I only end up with a black screen, and some
randomly colored first few lines at the top of the display.
It all points to a major malfunction. Unfortunately, the warranty expired 3 months ago...

  • Changing Keyboard (Hardware) AZERTY to QWERTY

    Hello all,
I need to know if it is relatively easy to change the keyboard (hardware) on a 17" Macbook Pro (Azerty to Qwerty). And any good sources for buying the the QWERTY keyboard.
Thanks in advance for any help, Gary

That's not a user-serviceable part, so you're going to have two problems replacing that keyboard:
1 - You won't be able to order the part unless you're in GSX.
2 - You'll probably (but not definitely) void the warranty by replacing it.
The good news is that you don't have to replace the key-board, you just have to rearrange the key tops and change the input method.
There's a web-page that explains the process better than I can:
    http://www.chimoosoft.com/dvorak.html
Just be very, very careful when pulling those keys off.

  • Which heading for posting apple keyboard hardware problems?

I'll apologize in advance, but I'm having a little difficulty locating a forum heading for posting about problems involving the Apple aluminum keyboard hardware. Specifically, I've been getting little electrical shocks once in a while from the keyboard. If someone would kindly directly me to the proper forum heading, I'll post about my problem over there.
    Thanks!

    Hi nconrads!
Maybe posting in the Using Your Mac Pro Forum, would produce some additional, helpful suggestions.
Others with the same hardware, may be experiencing the same issue.

  • 3GS - lag reproduceable! Hardware damaged?

    Hello!
I have a problem with lagging animations.
I have to note that I already restored the iPhone and did not install anything.
    For example:
You scroll a menu up and down (It must not be fast). In equal intervals you can see a short lagging. I did not measure the interval but it feels like it is around 10 seconds. The lag duration is about 1 second.
The same for all other animations:
    Browsing (scrolling the Page)
    Springboard (moving left and right)
    Menus like described above.
    Games
The best evidence is the comparison between my iPhone and the one of my girlfriend. Both iPhones are 3Gs's with OS 3.0.
If you load and open the free game "TapDefense" and run the first basic level without building anything. Simply letting the monsters do their way.
    My iPhone:
    One or two lags
The animation stops for around 1 second. After that the monster make a jump to that location they would have been without stopping the animation.
    (Classical graphic lag)
    My girlfriends's iPhone:
    Nothing. Animation without lag!
Can someone reproduce that on his iPhone?
    Step 1:
    Download and Install "TapDefense"
    Step 2:
    Start game
    Step 3:
    Select "New Game"
    Step 4:
    Do not make any changes!
    Game mode: Classic
    Map: Basic
    Level Pack: Quick Play
    Step 5:
    Select "Play"
    Step 6:
Let the "monsters" move without doing something.
Is there a lag during the movement to the monsters finish?
    What can I do?
    Is my hardware damaged?
    Best regards,
    gammla

    Hello!
The iPhone is restored without any backup. It is completely "clean"!
iStats is not free for me in the German appstore. But on a fresh restored iPhone with only the game "TapDefense" installed there should not be any memory issues.
The genius bar seems not to be available for me in Germany. I think I have to contact T-Mobile.
I have installed another game (Need for Speed). There are the same problems. My girlfriends iPhone works flawlessly.
A normal reboot does not solve the problem!
Does anybody have the same problems?
    Am I alone?
    Best regards,
    gammla

  • Keyboard (hardware & onscreen) suddenly don't work anymore - only factory reset helps

I have my Passport for about a month now and just experienced the following problem for the second time: all of sudden the keyboard (both hardware and onscreen) don't work anymore. I cannot enter my device password anymore, I can focus the password dialog, but then simply nothing happens when I press keys.
After a restart of the Passport it asks me for my SIM card PIN. Again, I can focus the text field in the dialog, and I can touch numbers of the onscreen keyboard, and the number keys light up, but no input gets to the dialog.
There is simply no way to activate the device anymore. I can do a backup using BlackBerry Link, and I can access the device with BlackBerry Blend - but the device itself is useless. No kind of restart or reset helps. The only solution is to do a factory reset, after that the device works fine again - for some time.
Once this happened while I was on the road, without doing anything with the device. The second time it happened when I was trying to deploy a self written app using the Momentics IDE.
    Additional information:
    - development mode is on (needed since I want to develop Apps for BB10)
    - Snap is installed
    - a handful of Android apps from Google Play store are installed
    - two BlackBerry World apps are installed (whatsapp and HUB++LED)
Did anyone experienced similar issues or has an idea what might cause this problem?
    Thanks!

Have you tried using a usb keyboard/mouse?
I don't use any usb, only use PS2. Maybe it is possible to use some sort of a PS2 to usb converter, but I would rather like the PS2 to work.

  • Reports - Find a specific keyboard [hardware] installed via SCCM

I just manged to find the hardware ID registry by checking details in device manager after I saw it install.
So I have HardwareID in hklm\system\controlset01\Enum\HID\VID_
How can I query 1,000s of devices in a collection for this data.

In a large environment somebody has inadvertently deployed a
number of unique keyboards that have a keyboard reader attached. There is
associated software but users have not [cannot] download that.
I need to be able to run a report or some sort of query to find
these puppies. I am not SQL savvy I am a canned report guy.
I can see it being installed as a human interface device but it
shows just like a regular keyboard.
I have the manufacturer and model number.
I dug through the registry with that info and came up blank.
    Any ideas?

y had a power problem and my power source got broken. y replaced whit a new oane all workd fine, but my pc dont boot not even in bios whit the audigy 2. y know some about hardware but y dont dont know haw to fix this. sombody know if can be repaird and haw? or the sound card is totaly damaged?

Probably broken then. Unless there is an obvious burnt or broken component on the board, repairing it doesn't seem feasible. If it is still in warranty, you might try contacting the vender or manufacturer.

  • Problem with keyboard (hardware or software problem?)

I'm currently faced with a troubling problem with my keyboard.
Apparently, certain keys when typed, appears together with an additional letter on the screen.
    exact problems:
    i when typed, becomes ir
r when typed, also becomes ir
    k when typed, becomes kf
f when typed, also becomes kf
    v when typed, becomes v,
, when typed, also becomes v,
    4 when typed, becomes 48
8 when typed, also becomes 48
I tried the on-screen keyboard, and also using a external usb keyboard, both worked.
Oh please note that I have not done anything accidental to the machine such as spilling of water which is affecting the way the keyboard is behaving now.

    Hi thewashedawaysand,
If an external keyboard works as well as the software keyboard it would seem to appear that the issue is related to the keyboard itself (hardware).
For something like that you'll need to get the unit into a service provider for further diagnostics.

  • MacBook keyboard spill damage?

    Hello all
I recently purchased a spill damaged Macbook late 2007 Core 2 Duo 2GHz 1GB RAM. Opened it up and cleaned it all out with water dispersent and contact cleaner and re-pasted the heatsinks. Plugged the keyboard in, hit the power button and... Nothing!
So I watched this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cnXsKBX5LM tried it and pow, Macbook fires up! Happy days, now have a semi-working macbook for under £30.
My question now relates to the keyboard and its port/socket on the logic board. If I am able to start the Macbook using the method in the video above, can I assume that its the keyboard that is damage/broken and not the port on the board? And that if I were to buy a new one for around £50 would it work?
I realise nobody could give me a definitive answer but a general consensus would be prime
    Thanks in advance. TRTH

Based in the information provided, no, you can't assume that the keyboard itself is faulty. What a liquid spill is involved anything could be shorted out. So in your case it could be the keyboard, it could bethe logic board or it could be both. Without the proper tools and knowledge to check the components out all you can do is start throwing money at it and hope the first cheapest thing you try works!

  • Compaq Pressario Hardware Damage?

    Hi,
I have a Compaq Pressario CQ60-418DX.  It's a major heat maker (I still have a mark on my leg from the burn) and then it started acting goofy and throwing Blue Screens.  After one such BS, when I got it to restart half of the programs were messed up and things weren't working right at all and errors that came up pointed to damage to hardware.  I ordered the restore disks, as the ones I made are in storage far away from me.
I bought a new hard drive for it, but nothing much happens when I go to run the restore disks.  It does the basic start up and I did go in and tell it to boot the CD/DVD drive before the HD, but all I can seem to get it to do is have the blinking cursor.  I can get into the BIOS, but I don't know what else to do.  I've been searching around for an answer and so far haven't been able to find anything yet.
    Anyone know anything?
    Jeni

If it got that hot it likely fried some of the hardware and you will not likely get it to work right ever again, heat is the worst thing for any electronics

  • No USB, iSight, Bluetooth, keyboard (water damage)

This is a peculiar problem, as I have not been able to find anyone else experiencing the same thing. I have a 2006 MacBook Pro. A few months ago, I spilled a bit of water on it (I know, I know...shame on me). Shut it off for a few days. When I powered on, everything worked fine except the S, Z, M, left apple, and left option keys. After a few more days, they all quit. Then would come back on making random characters and typing nonsense characters without touching it. Then would work fine (with the exception of the previously mentioned keys). This repeated for a while. Soon the USB went out. Next the iSight and the Bluetooth. The keyboard has now stopped functioning completely.
The odd thing is...the trackpad works fine, and the backlight is functioning normally. I can use a keyboard via USB, but it won't send enough power to turn lights on (caps lock, num lock). They will not recognize an external hard drive, or iPhone. However, upon booting, it will send a brief charge to an iPhone, then stop. I'm guessing it is a logic board problem, but I was wondering if anyone knows what the culprit could be if not. If so, is there a way to fix it?
In short, keyboard, USB, iSight, and Bluetooth, not working. Trackpad, backlight, FireWire, and everything else functions normally.

The only way to get everything up and running is to take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostics on it. It's likely that you fried some part of the logic board with your liquid spill and it will likely take a logic board replacement to 'fix' everything. While it might be quite expensive, you could always ask about the Apple Flat-Rate Repair Pricing scheme - maybe you can get the whole computer serviced for less than $350.
