  • Keyboard keys are not working

Im on mac OS X 10.6.8 several keyboard keys are not working. For instance the at symbol is not working or question mark and random other punctuation keys. The problem started after running some code from terminal to trun off mouse acceleration and then installing a plug-in to control more accurately the mouse funtions. Ive since uninstalled the plug in and disabled the adjustment in terminal. Ive checked all the normal keyboard funcions to make sure settings were not funky. When I log out and log in as a differnt user the problem with the keyboard is fixed. Someone please help
    Code I ran
    defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1

    Hello lindzthecreator,
I suggest this part of the article named One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1381
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Universal Access pane in System Preferences, click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by Mac OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • IPhoto 11 events' dates are all messed up

Hi, my iPhoto 11 events' dates are all messed up.
I tried a solution that I found in the forum in which one should delete file com.apple.iPhoto but I don't have the said file.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes you do. In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
You can then find and delete the necessary preference file.

  • Permissions are all messed up in 10.9

I installed Mavericks 10.9 on my 2008 Mac Pro desktop a couple of months ago. Then the monitors (2 of them) developed odd patterns. Apple Care (AC) tried to help me start 10.9 in Safe Mode, but when the progress bar finished, the computer shut itself off. We could never start in Safe Mode. Then AC diagnosed a hardware problem and recommended an Apple repair shop near me. The the video card was bad and they replaced it. But when they got things running, the permissions were very screwed up. They spent a lot of time repairing them (I don't know how), and then they upgraded the MacHD from a 1.5T Seagate to a 2T Western Digital and cloned the old MacHD to the new 2T drive. I took the machine home and still had permission problems and other problems. Adobe Acrobat Pro would not print PDF files, which I fixed with a suggestion from the Apple Forum. Then Photoshop CS4 gave me a "License Expired" message (Error code 150:30). I fixed that from the Forum (Adobe Community > Downloading, Installing, Setting Up > Discussions: Error code 150:30), with a fix that required a little entry in Terminal ($ sudo sh install_fnp.sh). That allowed me to open Photoshop, but when I turned Photoshop off and restarted it I got the "License Expired" message again.
On the advice of Apple personnel in the Apple Store in Spokane, I unstalled Photoshop CS4 and reinstalled it from the CS4 Suite DVDs, installing just PS with all the supporting apps that the installation automatically chose. Then when I started PS, I got an error "Don't have adequate permission access" or something like that that has been addressed in the Forums. From the Forums, I followed the suggestion of adding "username(me)" to the permissions window of the Info panel of the MacHD and choosing "Apply to enclosed items". That got rid of the "Don't have adequate permission access" error, but I got back the "License Expired" error again and PS wouldn't open. When I tried the "sudo sh instyall_fnp.sh" fix again, I discovered that I couldn't log in to Terminal:
Last login: Thu Feb 20 18:27:35 on console
login(12166,0x7fff7cf59310) malloc: *** error for object 0x7fe65b500180: pointer being freed was not allocated
*** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug
    [Process completed]
Meanwhile, using Disc Utility and "Verify Permissions" I see that my Permissions are still totally messed up. So I don't know what to do now.
I also have a Macbook Air. I see that in "Disk Utility > Verify Disk Permissions", the Permissions are also messed up on my Macbook Air, on which I installed 10.9 recently, but it seems to be working ok, so I have just left it alone.
I'm the Administrator and only User on this system. The Permissions remain a huge mystery to me. What is the difference between "Administrator", "System", and "Username(me)"? Should all these be present, with "Read & Write" access? And how do you fix such global Permissions problems?
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Hello, how much did you pay when some parts of the keyboard keys are not working properly due to accidental spilt of tea?

I accidentally spilt a tea on the keyboard of my Macbook Air 11'. I managed to wipe the keyboard and saved my laptop. However, I noticed that the Spacebar, Shift and Command keys are not working as it should be. It's like something's stuck inside that makes these keys hard to press as usual. I refered this problem to Amsys, Berwick St London, as the reservations in Apple Stores are full. Do you have any idea how much is the cost for diagnosis and repair if ever?
    Please help.

if you spilled a good bit of tea, its a serious problem, yes.
it got inside, and will corode, and bad things will begin to happen.
Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

  • Few keyboard keys are not working

    I am Using Mac 10.5.8
Yesterday, when i made my laptop shut down, all the keys were working perefectly.
Even when i started it today, for few minutes ie 5 minutes all the keys were working fine, But then i don't what happned suddenly.
Pointer starts blinking.. Down arrow key was getting pressed itself.
Later i restarted it, and found Right click on trackpad was not working, and all arrow keys along with right Command key are not working.
Then i restarted it again, command keys started working, and up ,left & right arrow keys started working.
I verified my disk, then i found right click started working.
The only key was not working down arrow key.
But after 30 minutes Right key stopped working and Right command key too
Suggest me what should i do now, it seems more like some software problem in comparison to Keyboard hardware problem.

Hey i guess that's not a good idea, Could you please let me know something about some hardware check/keyboard viewer.
    Anything like that ?

  • Xorg graphics are all messed up and glitchy (screenshots) How to fix?

I've set up a new system, but the graphics are super glitchy!
Here's what gdm (gnome) looks like when i enter run level 5 with an existing xorg.conf file:
and here's what it looks like without xorg.conf so settings are automatic:
With the first setup (xorg.conf included) there's no way to log in.
Without xorg.conf, you can see the loging windows and log in, and when you get to the desktop, the background remains all messed up just like at the login screen.
Any ideas what might be wrong? i'll be right back to post my xorg.conf

  • Dv6 2190us - some keyboard keys are not working

    Hi there all,
My sis bought me Dv6 2190us laptop last Feb 2010 and I just got it now. The problem now is, some of the keys like the letters - W, S, and X are not working so I am not able to log-in to Window 7. The laptop is brandnew, the keys are not sticking but the only unusual thing is that , the battery was attached to the laptop for one year.... Couldnt this be the reason and what should I do to resolve this? Appreciate your kind help!
    Thanks in advance,..

also having this issue with 6 month old dv6 3031 but my entire line beginning with a to enter key will not respond so i cannot do any tests or what not. i was advised to do bios setup by clicking F10 when notebook is booting up, arrow across to Diagnostic menu and perform PRIMARY HARD DISK SELF TEST. of course i was unable to do this as my enter key does not work but maybe you could give it a go and have more luck
    cheers

  • Keyboard keys are not working at startup

when i start my laptop the keys of keyboard are not working except the movement key and numeric enter key.
but when i turn of the narrator keys are starts working excepts some (such as: right control, function keys in some way,i.e.
wi-fi, volume, brightness & other are not working ) everytime.even it wake up from stand by mode.
function keys are work in genrel way i.e. F1 to F12.what can I do to resolve this.

    hi ,
    follow this steps please ,
    1. Right click on My Computer Icon > Properties > Device manager (on the left side)
    2. find the Keyboard > Right click on it > CHeck for updates
    3. Make sure that you installed the right Driver for Your Keyboard proided from HP official website
    if these didn't help
try using another OS (replace your Win version)
** for experts only : you can use UBUNTU live disk to check the Keyboard without uninstalling you win version
if changing the OS didn't help
now it's one of two things
    1. there is a problem with your BIOS
    2. there is a HW problem
and in both cases i don't recommend you to start solving it yourself
Updating the BIOS is very sesitive operation and also the HW problems
so please look for the nearest HP support center to your city
and make sure that they will solve your Problem
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!
Also be sure to mark my post as “Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others who face the same challenge find the same solution.

  • 4.2 now Safari bookmarks are all messed up

bookmark bar is all messed up many of my bookmarks are gone and I can't add any to the bar now. it has also done the same on my iPad

So, do you think Apple is gonna get a fix out for this? Just curious, as they were the ones who were so big on the whole idea of Stacks in the first place.

  • Album cover are all messed up.

I own Thousands of CD's an have spent countless hours copying them over to my computers.. I buy an iPod and notice something strange my covers are a messed up a little, so I spend the time to fix them. I by an iPhone and once again the covers are screwed up. now today I notice they are all different. My iPod my iPad and my iPhone as well as my iMac and Windows PC's this has to be an issue with the iTunes software. What happened? how do I correct this without loosing all my time again. this has also affected my music that I have purchased from the iTunes store.

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your iPod's artwork cache may have become corrupt. I would suggest clearing it out and rebuilding it. To do this:
    1. Plug the iPod in and when it appears in iTunes, click on its device name on the left pane of iTunes if necessary
    2. Under the Music tab, remove the check mark next to “include album artwork on this iPod.”
    3. Hit Apply to sync the updated changes.
    4. After it has finished syncing, place the check mark back next to “include album artwork on this iPod” option.
    5. Again, hit Apply to sync the updated changes.
    6. Lastly, properly eject your iPod, and verify that the album artwork is correct.
    Hope this helps.
