Keyboard Shortcut won't allow a function key

I'm in System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts. I'm trying to set F8 as a shortcut to open Yojimbo. It should be the default set by the application but it doesn't work.
Keyboard shortcuts does nothing when I press F8. It only allows me to use something like Command-Y. I would much prefer the one finger F8. How can I do this?
Even when I set a shortcut in System Preferences, it doesn't work.

For the function keys thing, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3399
IIRC, you have to log out and back in or restart to get the changes to take affect.

Go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and check the box for Keyboard Viewer.  Then select Keyboard Viewer from the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen.  It will show all the special characters you can make when you press the alt and alt + shift keys.

  • No Keyboard Shortcuts & Won't Shut Down

I've been using Leopard since it came out and every once in a while I'll come across a time where none of my keyboard shortcuts won't work. For example command+tab doesn't work to switch between applications, control+arrow key doesn't work to change spaces, etc.
Also, when this happens, the computer won't shut down. Clicking "Shut Down" will remove the top menu panel, but then it just sits there...forever...
I was hoping the latest update would fix this problem but it hasn't. I'm not running Quicksilver as some other posts have mentioned. I'm using both Camino & Safari for web browsers, iTunes, and EyeTV...that's it...
Has anyone else seen this or have any fixes? I can't seem to find a bug report on it either. Thanks.

Ok, I think I found more information here and was hoping someone could confirm. I have a Windows share that I mount to the Mac via SMB. If I shut down the Windows PC while the drive is still mounted on the Mac, I experience these problems. Particularly the not being able to shut down part.
If someone else could try this I'd appreciate it!

  • Zoom keyboard shortcut won't work with "Italian Pro" keyboard, Zoom keyboard shortcut won't work with "Italian Pro" keyboard

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to get to the bottom of this mystery. "Italian Pro" is the keyboard I use almost all the time, and for some reason this zoom shortcut won't work. Another user assured me that "cmd-+" is the shortcut also in that keyboard. Mine doesn't work though. I have tried removing the keyboard and reapplying it. I've tried to use it on different browsers and different applications. I've even created another user and logged into that, installing the keyboard there. Nothing has worked, so can anyone suggest anything? What do I do next? (I know it doesn't seem like much but the issue really interferes with the flow of my things) Thank you!

for some reason this zoom shortcut won't work.
What zoom are you talking about?
The View > Zoom In command in Safari or Preview?
The Universal Access > Zoom In function?
The Zoom In command in some other app, eg, InDesign?
    Some other Zoom entirely?
Another user assured me that "cmd-+" is the shortcut also in that keyboard.
If we're talking about (b) and (1), then this 'other user' (his initials wouldn't be TG, would it?) was right. My keyboard is US QWERTY, and, if I switch to Italian Pro, ⌘-+ works. However, as the 'other user' has already told you, to do ⌘-+ with the Italian Pro keylayout on the US QWERTY keyboard, you have to press simultaneously the keys labelled ⌘ and ] -- as you can easily see in Keyboard Viewer.

  • Undo keyboard shortcut won't work

I have quite a bizaare problem - the keyboard shortcut for undo will work after I restart my computer, but after awhile, it simply stops working.  I am thus forced to click on Edit->Undo every time I want to undo something.  Once the shortcut stops working, it applies to all applications.  I have not been able to identify any "trigger" which causes it to stop working.  I've tried to "Restore defaults" in the Keyboard shortcuts tab under the Keyboards menu, but this didn't have any effect.  Any ideas?

  • F7 and F8 Keyboard shortcuts won't work correctly.

I've just recently installed LR3.6 and it's my first experience with LR.  I've been following Lynda.com tutorials and all of a sudden the F7 and F8 function keys won't work.
The F7 just does nothing and the F8 opens iTunes every time I press it.  I've tried everthing I know (not being much of a Techie) without success.  I installed one upgrade download since I installed the original CD software. Should I just delete the program and re-install the program?  I believe the F-keys were woking originally.  I'm sorry, but I was going thru the tutorials and not being as observant as I should.  All I know for certain is that they do not work now.
I'm using an iMac 27 with the wireless keyboard. OSX 10.6.8.
Thanks for any help. - John, Vancouver, WA

  • Spaces keyboard shortcuts won't work

i just got my new MBP, and i have noticed a little problem.
all of the F1-F12 keys were all given default functionality (i.e. F3 is Expose, F4 is Dashboard...).
well, when trying to set up the shortcuts for Spaces navigation, I have noticed that, no matter what F key I press, the default functionality is getting called and not the Spaces navigation.
I have even tried this with the command/control additions to the F keys, and have had no luck. i thought i read that this was a known issue with the most recent version of OS X.
has anyone else noticed this problem, and does anyone know of a solution?
    thanks you.

apparently, i was looking in the wrong place. this was addressed in the os x forum.
using the command-arrow keys to switch between desktops will work fine with me, although i would like full functionality.
sorry for the repost. if anyone does know the real solution, please don't hesitate to let me know. it seems as though, while some people can get it to work, os x eventually forgets the keyboard shortcuts.
    hope it gets fixed.

  • Keyboard shortcuts won't stay deleted! ARGH!!!

I use the keyboard shortcut functions of iOS 8 extensively. I'm in the military and I'm stationed in Hawaii...which means a lot of names of things that the stock keyboard doesn't recognize, and a lot of military acronyms. I have iCloud backup turned on. My wife uses the same iTunes account on her phone.
I have a ton of shortcuts but let's just use a random example. I have a shortcut "un" that shortcuts to my standard forum username Matth3w. She hates this shortcut, so I deleted it and she deleted it off the phones.
IT KEEPS FREAKING REAPPEARING!!! I delete the darned thing once a day and it keeps coming back when I reboot or randomly. I've verified it's off both phones. *** is going on?
Doesn't iCloud and keyboard shortcut syncing work like Dropbox/Google Drive? Where the latest change is the one that is sync'd across all devices??? If I have Drive installed and I delete a file it certainly doesn't put it back on my computer again randomly each day, it DELETES it from the other devices/computers using Drive.
How can I get the shortcuts to sync properly? It does it even if I turn off iCloud backup!!
iOS 8.1 although this has been going on since I can remember. iOS 7 or 8.
I've tried shutting off iCloud, deleting, then signing back in, you name it.

This is stupid to even have to worry about with such an advanced and successful company. The Apple support reps told me to create a new Apple ID in hopes that it would fix it. that's such a stupid response. That's the equivalent of the 1990s "go to MSDOS prompt and type format c:" that you would get from Packard Bell tech support.
What's to say the NEW apple ID wouldn't screw up in a month anyhow?
Seriously Apple, this is amateur hour crap.

  • Keyboard shortcuts won't open & settings won't sync PP CC

    Hi All,
    I have two issues...
    1) The keyboard shortcuts panel won't open so I can't change them.
    2) My settings refuse to upload to CC no matter what I do. I've tried deleteing the stored settings from my CC account. I've tried signing out of CC via the helpmenu in PP and then signing back in again. I've tried clening the media cache. Restarting/rebooting/opening new project etc etc.. all steps suggested in other posts but nopthing seems to work.
    Any thoughts gratefully received.
    Many thanks,

  • [solved] xfce keyboard shortcuts won't work, tried arch wiki solution

Keyboard shortcuts defined in the xfce's keyboard settings don't work,  as described in the wiki:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfc … 7t_working
When I kill xfce4-settings-helper the shortcuts work again. After restarting X the problem returns. I renamed '/etc/xdg/autostart/xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop' and  '~/.config/autostart/xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop' as described in the wiki, But the second file is regenerated  after restarting X. Does anyone know a good solution?

  • Keyboard Shortcuts Won't work

I'm using "Audacity", a free audio editing app and have to repeatedly export my audio files as a WAV, but there's no built in command.
    - I went to Keyboard and Mouse in System Prefs
    - Went to Keyboard Shortcuts
    - Added the application to the list
    - Added the menu item exactly as it appears in the menu ("Export As WAV...")
    - Input a shortcut command and closed System Prefs
    - Restarted Audacity.
No luck. I then changed the key command and no luck. I took out the "..." in the menu item and no luck. Do I have to imply what drop menu it's in? Like, do I need to put "File, Export As WAV..."?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks,

Thanks Tom! Got some inspiration from the search! In System Preferences, Language and Text, I picked "Region: US" and "US Keyboard" for "Input source" and... the problem is solved! I'll have to do this each time I want to work with FCE, but that's not too bad.
Thanks again for the quick reply.

  • Hello . Mozilla keyboard shortcuts does not include any window key shortcuts. Please update this content . Thanks

    From Mozilla keyboard shortcuts webpage.

In this article: [[Keyboard shortcuts - Perform common Firefox tasks quickly]]?
If the problem is that you are not seeing shortcuts for Mac or Linux, and you are running Windows, then the site did not properly detect your OS. In the left part of the page, look for the EDITING TOOLS bar. If necessary, click it to expand the list of tools. Then you should see a section called CUSTOMIZE THIS ARTICLE where you can change from Mac or Linux to your version of Windows.
If the problem is that there are specific shortcuts missing that you would like to see documented, could you mention which ones they are or which functions they perform?

  • Mac Mail custom keyboard shortcuts won't work

I'm using Mac Mail, trying to set keyboard shortcuts to set flags
    - I goto preferences/keyboard/application shortcuts
    - click on "+" to add shortcut
    - specify Mail shortcut in dropdown menu
    - add 6 different shotrcuts OPT/CMD-_ (where _ is: L S V F R P)
    - when I added the shortcut, i was very careful to make sure the MENU TITLE of the shortcut in  OS-X preferences paine is the same as the
Then, in Mail app, reading a message, I press the shortcut (ex: OPT/CMD-L), and the flag is not set

I'm having this exact same problem with Mail.app on Mavericks, and my workaround is exactly the same.  Doesn't it sort of defeat the whole purpose of keyboard shortcuts if I have to grab my mouse to expose the relevant menu?!  Very frustrating.  Does anyone know how to either 1) find a better workaround on our end or 2) convince Apple to fix the problem?
#2 seems unlikely since custom keyboard shortcuts is probably a pretty rarely used feature...

  • Keyboard shortcuts won't work – please help

I have Dreamweaver CS3 on a PC with Windows XP, and recently had to reinstall my operating system to recover from a malware attack.  Ever since I redid my computer, I’ve been unable to use any keyboard shortcuts in Dreamweaver.  For example, Ctrl+v pastes in any other program, but in Dreamweaver, I only get a white arrow cursor with a white box in the bottom right of the cursor as soon as I press Ctrl.  F12 is set to preview a page in my default browser, but pressing it has no apparent effect. Does anyone have any advice on getting my keyboard shortcuts to work properly?  Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but you may have to reinstall Dreamweaver to get it to recognize your 'new' installation.
This has nothing to do with Dreamweaver not working correctly, but getting your os to recognize the keyboard shortcuts from the dreamweaver instalation.

Not sure about Pro, but on my MacBook (Leopard 10.5.6):
    In Word
= fn + right or left arrow keys only take me to the "home" or "end of the particular line I'm on.
= fn + up or down do the same as the MS "pg up" or "pg dn"
= fn + command + (arrow keys) take me to the very beginning or end of the document (Word or Excel).
    In Excel
= command + right or left jumps to the next cell that has info in it (skips empty cells)
= command + up or down jumps to the beginning or end of adjacent cells with info in them.
    = fn + right doesn't do anything
= fn + left takes me to the beginning of whatever row I'm in.
= fn + up and down are the same as pg up and pg dn. So is command + up or down arrow.
= fn + command + left arrow takes you to the beginning of the document (same as "Cntrl + Home")
