Keychain problem?  Everything is forgetting everything!  :-(

Well, it seems like it anyhow.  I sync between my home and work computers and also we have security people mucking around with stuff and occasionally breaking my world, so I don't know where to point the finger.  This is one where I don't know where to start troubleshooting.
Here are the symptoms:  Safari is forgetting all my previously saved logins.  Mail forgets my usernames and passwords for one account or another.  My program JollyFastVNC forgets my username.  It is just a system-wide amnesia regarding authentication, and it all seems related somehow to my keychain.
Something is corrupt in Keychain Land, I think, and it might have happened during a sync operation.  So I'd like to know how to safely "reset" my keychain while keeping a backup and then how to add items back in as a troubleshooting step, similar to the "find the corrupted extensions" dance some of us know so well from OS 9 days.
This is all on a desktop Intel mac running 10.6.7 with lots of RAM etc.  Not happening at home, just at work, with basically the same setup.

First, download OnyX 1.8.5 for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).
Install it but don't run it yet.
<http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html>
1) Launch your Script Editor (Applications>AppleScript>Script Editor) and paste the blue code below into it. Then click Run.
do shell script "rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.keychainaccess.plist"
do shell script "rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist"
do shell script "rm -rf ~/Library/Keychains/"
2) Quit the Script Editor and restart your Mac.
3) Launch OnyX 1.8.5 and click on the 'Automation' tab. When OnyX has finished, restart again.
4) Launch Keychain Access and from the Keychain Access menu select Keychain First Aid -> Repair.
Now test your internet applications.
BTW, Trash all the Keychain files on your desktop.

  • Mail and Keychain Problem

I would like to refer to the problem of Mail asking multiple (50 plus) a day for the passwords for POP accounts. The question has been posted a couple of times here and a dozens of times in other forums. Nobody was able to give an answer. If nobody has an answer to a software problem, then it is normally called a bug.
The simple question to Apple: When will you fix this bug? It makes Mail basically unusable.
    Regards

sorry to have not provided details, as everybody I know has this problem. and a couple of others-:)

they all relate to exactly the same problem and they have been asked in the last 4-5 days in this forum and no solution has been offered. The last time I looked for an answer was 4 weeks ago and the ratio of asked questions (this question) and no answers was the same. I have seen this question in all other Mac user forums and no solution has been offered there as well. This has let me to the hypothesis, that it is a bug.
    ok the details:
I have 5 POP accounts on my mac and one .Mac account. The .Mac never has a problem, but the POP accounts ask for the password randomly, sometimes twice a minute. This must happen when Mail checks with the respective mail server for new messages. The problem has popped up half a year ago, I believe when Tiger got introduced. We are five people in our office and everybody has this problem, at work and at home and with 6 different providers.
Even if you check the box, "Save password in Keychain" it happens again. You can avoid this by closing Mail and just opening it when you check for new mail every couple of hours, or you can hit the button "Connect to Internet" in Mail. If you are lucky all the POP accounts get downloaded.
I have tried the Keychain fixes, everything that got posted as possible fixes. Nothing worked.
    Help would be appreciated.

  • My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up.  In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102.

My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up.  In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102 and it keeps circling through the same error.  Also the screen is so faint (pressing the F1 and F2 keys don't do anything).   I got this from a friend and he didn't have any of the original discs.  Any suggestions?  From what I've read it's a problem with a recent update.  I've never had a Mac so I'm trying to learn and fix it.

I just had an issue like this. I was able to boot up with an external firewire drive, although it was a lot of trouble. I think doing an option boot finally worked; holding down the option key, I eventually got to see the firewire drive was bootable, and booted from it.
I put the thing in verbose boot mode (command - v , I think; but please look it up. I have no Mac books at work to check). In verbose mode, you could see that the hard drive could not mount; the OS tried to do fsck, but it failed around 2/3 of the way, and the CPU was halted.
I was occasionally able to boot normally, but never in safe or single user modes; these do a disk test first, which invariably failed.
I could see from the system and console logs when I managed to get the firewire boot going that there were repeated errors trying to access drive s03, the internal SATA drive. The logs on the SATA drive showed huges numbers of errors. At a wild guess, for some reason a lot of sectors went bad all at once. There had been a some erratic behavior before, but I'd put that down to the single processor G5 problems. (these were non video related, just freezes).
Applecare wanted me to carry the huge thing into the local Apple store, but I persuaded them to just send me a replacment hard drive, which they did. The new one works perfectly.

  • Wifi keychain problems

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks I've had keychain problems with my home network and other friend's wifi networks. It says "Keychain 'system' cannot be found to store 'my network name'." The option is "cance" or "reset to default." I've done a reset but that doesn't work. If I hit "cancel" then it asks me if I want to run diagnostics, which does nothing, or to cancel. If I hit cancel for a second time then the wifi works, but it does this to me everytime I wake up the computer.
Any suggestions on how to fix this bug? It's quite annoying on a daily basis

    anyone?
    thanks

  • Keychain problem OSX10.9.

Have keychain problem, tried to Reset My Default Keychain in General Preference but it said "The specified keychain could not be found" Please help!

At some point, you reset your keychain to default in Keychain Access. That caused your login keychain to be renamed.
    Back up all data.
In Keychain Access, delete the login keychain from the keychain list. Choose Delete References when prompted, not Delete References & Files.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Keychains
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return. A folder will open. Rename the file "login.keychain" in that folder to something like "login-old.keychain". Rename the file "login-renamed.keychain" to "login.keychain".
    Back in Keychain Access, select
    File ▹ Add Keychain...
from the menu bar. Add back the file now named "login.keychain". If any of your needed keychain items are missing from it, also add back the file you named "login-old.keychain". I suggest you transfer any needed items from that keychain to the login keychain, then delete it. The transfers are made by drag-and-drop in Keychain Access. You'll need to enter your password for each item transferred.

  • Keychain Problems after sync

Did a sync with mobileme last night and now I'm having keychain problems. I'd like to replace the keychain file with the file from my last backup. I don't use time machine. Where does this file live and is this a viable way to fix the problem? I already tried keychain first aid.
    Thanks for help.

    Here is the fix that worked for me;
Locate the Keychain Utility in your Applications directory under Utilities.
    Launch Keychain Utility.
Look for the fields whose Kindis “.Mac Password.” (Unless you have changed the default Keychain configuration, it/they will be located under the “login” keychain).
Select and remove the fields by pressing the delete key on your keyboard.
    Confirm the deletion.
    Close Keychain Utility.
You will have to re-enter these passwords next time they need to be used (checking email, syncing to Mobile Me, etc.) and they will be “re-stored” in the Keychain.
    Good luck.

  • Mac Mini Intel Keychain problems + Entourage

This Mac mini is not even a week old and I had to twice reinstall Tiger to get this keychain problem gone and it just keeps comming back like a bad cold.
Keychain keeps on getting messed up for no good reason and keeps losing my passwords.
I have deleted the keychain files tryed to repair reinstalled tiger 2 times already and after 3 - 5 days it comes back.
Is this a new virus or is my Mac mini being hacked or what ???
Oh and what is up with Office for mac is there a patch to make it work with tiger as it keeps on crashing and several other problems ????

Well, if your Keychain issues keep coming back, then reinstalling Tiger probably isn't a good idea anymore, as you now know it will not solve them.
After the re-installs, did you download and install the latest updates (with Software Update) ?
Also, it would help to know with which application(s) you entered the passwords that your Keychain loses.
Even though there are a few viruses for Mac OS X, I doubt that you got one, as they aren't very widespread and, as far as I know, do not corrupt Keychains. It doesn't seem very likely that your being hacked either, unless you have specific reasons to consider yourself a target. However enabling Mac OS X's built-in firewall isn't a bad idea if you haven't installed any third-party solution. Just open System Preferences (which can be accessed through your Applications folder, or though the Apple Menu - the blue Apple icon in the Menu Bar, at the top of your screen - beneath "Software Update..." and "Mac OS X Software..."), and open the Sharing pane (Internet & Network section), where you will find a Firewall tab. Once you're there, simply click on "Start" to enable the firewall.
There have been a few reports of Office:mac crashing on Intel Macs, but they don't seem to occur very often, and the only thing I can think of to fix this is to download the latest update from Microsoft's website ...

Some Solutions for Resetting Forgotten Security Questions

  • Firefox worked fine until upgraded to Windows 7 - would processor speed be the problem - everything else is fine.

I have Firefox 28 which worked fine when I had Windows XP. Upgraded to WIndows 7 (updated all my drivers, etc). Now Firefox has times when it will not respond. Have tried most suggested fixes I could find on here and on-line. Nothing fixes it. It worked fine before the upgrade. This may sound like a dumb question to computer savy people, but would the older dual core processor be having a problem now that I am running Windows 7? Everything works great on the computer except for Firefox and Internet Explorer. I download Google Chrome and so far have not had an issue when using it. I don't care for it and would like to go back to Firefox, but the fixes don't fix it. I have uninstalled and re-installed and disabled plug-ins and removed and added and updated plug-ins, ran various virus/spyware scans, reset, downgraded to an older version, upgraded again, and a ton of other fixes. I wish I could figure out what changed from Windows XP to Windows 7 that would affect both browsers.

I doubt that the processor is the problem here. It might be that something went wrong with your browsing profile during the operating system upgrade.
One thing you can try is to reset your profile: in the "Help" menu, there is an entry "Troubleshooting Information". Clicking on that takes you to a page containing technical information about your machine and browser configuration. Additionally, it has a "Reset Firefox" button in the upper-right corner. Clicking on that starts a process that allows you to create a new, clean profile that contains your browsing history and bookmarks, but does away with potentially-problematic settings in your profile. (Don't worry, your original profile will be left untouched and you can return to it later.)
In many cases, this process solves issues people have with their browser misbehaving, so I hope it works for you, too.

  • Problem: Everything needs rendering

I have an irritating problem in that whenever I capture video from my DV camera, then edit it into a sequence it always says that it needs to be rendered, which doesn't make sense. I have no idea why this is and can't find any mention in preferences etc as to why this should be.
I also get a similar problem when importing existing video and audio files.
I am using Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1 on a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 3GB memory. My DVcam is a Canon MVX30i (PAL)
I'm fairly sure there is an extremely simple answer to this problem and that I will be welll and truly ashamed at myself for not spotting it but to save me tearing out my hair can anyone point me in the right direction.

    Hi Tom, thanks for answering,
Right, I will admit that I am a complete beginner and so am probably looking in the wrong places for these facts:
Looking at the Item properties for one of the movies I have tried to capture it says the audio is mono, the aud rate is 32.0 KHz and the aud format is 16-bit integer and the data rate is 3.6MB/sec.
I have been capturing the media using the DV-PAL 32 KHz FireWire Basic setting
As for the sample rate I don't know where to find that out.
Sorry to be a clueless newbie. Any ideas?

  • FCP Display Gamma Problem (Everything Dark)

I recently let system update do it's thing and went from 10.6.4 to 10.6.6 including updating pro-apps (FCS 3).
Suddenly FCP, DVDSP, & Motion show all of my video files extremely dark (STP & Color are show them fine).
It's as if the gamma those programs are using to display the image has changed. (Quicktime & other non-Apple apps show it fine).
I've messed with FCS Maintenance Pack, and also used FCS Remover to remove and re-install, but that hasn't fixed the issue.
I'm sure there is a setting, or corrupted file somewhere that's causing video to be displayed wrong, but I'm not sure where to look, what to change at this point.
Any help, thoughts, ideas? Thanks in advance.

Not familiar with FCE. Did you try the other advice offered in this thread and go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences and click on the Displays Icon.
When that opens click on the Color Tab.
Verify that your setting is correct for your display.
Also, what are the properties of your source video?

  • ITunes streaming problem, everything else works fine.

I'm having a curious issue that's proven problematic to troubleshoot.  I'm hoping someone else has already run into this issue and can possibly provide some feedback.
Recently, and randomly, our AppleTV has refused to stream movies out of our iTunes Library.  It'll primarily sit at the loading screen until it times out, and on rare occasion it'll start a movie and then proceed to hang.  The curiosity of this is that iTunes and our movie library is the only service on AppleTV to experience this failure.  Netflix and Hulu both stream perfectly at high resolution without any issue what so ever.
I'm located in Green Bay, WI, and haven't had any issues with my ISP and streaming (for the most part) I also checked my router for anything in particular, and couldn't find anything that would indicate a service blockage related to Apple.
God help me if my two young girls can't watch Frozen, curious if anyone has had a similar issue.

I have been having the same issue with my Apple TV Gen3 boxes.  My Gen 2 devices work fine.
I did find out that if I restart (settings>general>restart) the Apple TV, that it works until I let the Apple TV go to sleep.
I average rebooting my Apple TV Gen3 devices at least once a day.

  • Mail and keychain problems when upgrading to SL

I have tried twice to upgrade to SL from 10.4.11.
Initially everything is smooth as glass, fast, no issues at all.
After I open mail everything works fine. After closing mail; the next time I open it and try to get mail the little boxes asking for my password shows up on 3 of the 5 accounts.
I add the password and I can get mail.
However if I check the box to save the PW to the keychain, mail stops working. In the worst case I loose all my mail in the account where I asked for the PW to be saved.
Needless to say I only did that once.
I do NOT get the use mail 1st time message until I loose my mail. Then everything is gone
I have tried to remove and re-add the offending accounts both in mail set-up and in thew keychain.
    " " " " " the mail.plist.
    " " " " " " " " to the desktop and re-placing it.
I have talked to apple support and nobody has a clue. 1st time was Aug, '10, then again this weekend.
    Still the same problem.
On the positive side Safari was working again, and Aperture "flew"
So I really want to upgrade.
The people I have talked to who have upgraded from 10.4.11 to SL do not seem to have had a problem.
Everything works fine with Tiger, except Safari and Aperture is slow. Firefox is also slow, but Safari doesn't work anymore.
Being a former techie (retired now) I have checked, DBL checked and tripple checked. Permissions are fine, althoug after the upgrade there were a couple that I fixed.
I am back on Tiger, Good thing I backup frequently.
    Please can anyone assist?????
I am going to try it again, but not until I get some productive feedback
    Thanks
    Hanne333

Thank you for the total lack of help!!
    Next time someone asks::
Go to keychain firstaid ( I am assuming you know how to get there ;-p
and run it, then repair it
    Keychain now works

  • Can anyone please help me with Keychain problems?

    Hello,
I'm using a MacBook Pro with Maverick.  I installed Maverick yesterday and ever since then I've had problems with Keychain.  I realize that many people have had problems with it post Maverick installation.  However, since I'm relatively unfamiliar with Macsy systems I would like to find out the following:
    1) How essential are the entries in Keychain i.e. if I delete them all, will it affact the functionality of my MacBook Pro?
    2) How do I delete all the entries if doing so won't cause any problems?
    3) Is there something else I can do to fix the problem without deleting everything in Keychain?
At the moment, when I logon to my Pro, I have to enter my password and a password related to Keychain.  This is the message that pops up:
OS X want to use the 'Local Items' Keychain.  Please enter the keychain password.
I select cancel and are then logged in to my Pro.  However, various other apps are then affacted by the Keychain, most notably my iCloud.  I am unable to log into my iCloud through System Preferences because it requires a Keychain password. Safari is also affected by it.
This is extremely frustrating because I didn't set up a Keychain password.  It seems I'm stuck in a loop.  I've tried to reset the Keychain and to restore to defaults, but in order to do so, I have to enter a pasword, which I don't know.
I just want to start again or remove Keychain, but as far as I can tell, it is not possible to get rid of Keychain.
    Many thanks.

OK, I have resolved the issue.
It was al very complicated and I had enough really, so I decided to take some drastic action.
I created another admin user account, ensured that it was working, went to user accounts and deleted my original account with the problem.  It is working fine now.
I know this is not really a solution, but it was fine for me since I had just set up my original user account, so there wasn't anything to lose really.

  • Mail update & keychain problems

Since installing a large security update yesterday on my MacBook Pro, I have not been able to use Mail. I keep getting the following message:
"Mail has been updated. Do you want to allow the new version to access the same keychain items (such as passwords) as the previous version?"
The options are Don't Change or Change All. When I click "Change All," the dialog box stays on screen for a very long time, ca. 10 minutes. Then it pops up AGAIN. Eventually I just give up as it seems the program is not responding.
By the way, in the past I used to get these messages regarding "SyndicationAgent.app". The same problem--the computer being nearly frozen for 10-15 minutes--also occurred, although it would eventually get past it. Fortunately those messages have stopped.
Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated! It's driving me bananas!!
    thanks,
    Mark

For those who are put off by the above website here is what was done to 'Fix KeyChain constantly asking for permission to update as your software has been upgraded" (this occurred after Security Update 2009-004 for 10.4 Intel, could not get mail without that blasted box constantly showing up)
In order to fix this problem if you are having it, just open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and type:
    sudo mv /var/db/CodeEquivalenceDatabase /var/db/CodeEquivalenceDatabase.old
Hit return, it will ask you if you are serious, if so enter password, well swallow hard and do it; then re-boot; on re-signing in it asks you for 'Keychain permission to update (in my case Airport) as it has been upgraded, cruse the stars and hit yes, everything will work! Going to Safari in my case asked for permission, and I gave it and it works fine, same thing for each account in Mail; once okayed it works fine and doesn't keep asking for Keychain permission for more than once!
