Keyframing in Elements 4

Hi All:
I just switched over from another video editing software and I'm having a little difficulty figuring out how use keyframing in Elements 4.
What I am trying to do is create a pan and scan effect for still photos. For instance I may want to start in the upper right corner of the photo and then stop in the center. Or start in the center and completely zoom out. And so on.
When I use some of the program preset scans it moves off the picture and will show black instead of just staying within the confines of the photo istelf.
How do I correct this? Thanks all for the help.

The preset motions are designed to fit certain sizes of photos. (Their names tell you what sizes.) If you use one on a smaller photo, the pan will, then, go off the picture.
Doing your own keyframing is easy -- and it's a great still to learn.
My free Steve's Tips article will show you how.

  • Class for moving images (ImageView)

    Hi! I'm trying to create a class for move an image (using ImageView class). For first, I create a simple testing class:
    package javafxapplication2;
    import javafx.stage.Stage;
    import javafx.scene.Scene;
    import javafx.scene.image.Image;
    import javafx.scene.image.ImageView;
    import javafx.animation.KeyFrame;
    import javafx.animation.Timeline;
    import javafx.scene.input.MouseEvent;
    var image: ImageView;
    var timeline = Timeline {
        def im = image;
        keyFrames: [
            KeyFrame {
                time: 0s,
                values: [
                    im.x => 20.0,
                    im.y => 20.0
            KeyFrame {
                time: 1s,
                values: [
                    im.x => 150.0,
                    im.y => 150.0
    Stage {
        title: "Test"
        scene: Scene {
            width: 550, height: 350
            content: [
                image = ImageView {
                    x: 20.0, y: 20.0
                    image: Image {
                        url: "http://www.google.it/logos/2010/joseffrank-hp.gif";
                    onMousePressed: function(e: MouseEvent) {
                        timeline.play();
    }But it does not works! And I can't use the "bind" variables, because in an extern class like this:
    package javafxapplication2;
    import javafx.animation.Timeline;
    import javafx.animation.KeyFrame;
    var element: Element;
    var fromBoxX : Number;
    var fromBoxY: Number;
    var toBoxX: Number;
    var toBoxY: Number;
    var timeline = Timeline {
        def e = element;
        keyFrames: [
            KeyFrame {
                time: 0s,
                values: [
                    e.x => fromBoxX,
                    e.y => fromBoxY
            KeyFrame {
                time: 1s,
                values: [
                    e.x => toBoxX,
                    e.y => toBoxY
    public function move (el: Element, fBox: Box, tBox: Box): Void {
        element = el;
        fromBoxX = el.matrix.getMatrixIndexes(fBox.location).getY() * el.board.squareSize;
        fromBoxY = el.matrix.getMatrixIndexes(fBox.location).getX() * el.board.squareSize;
        toBoxX = el.matrix.getMatrixIndexes(tBox.location).getY() * el.board.squareSize;
        toBoxY = el.matrix.getMatrixIndexes(tBox.location).getX() * el.board.squareSize;
        timeline.playFromStart();
    public class Elements {}I can't use it!
    Is here anybody that can help me? (Sorry for my bad english)

    It is because the image variable is null when the timiline is createed.
    Try this:
    import javafx.stage.Stage;
    import javafx.scene.Scene;
    import javafx.scene.image.Image;
    import javafx.scene.image.ImageView;
    import javafx.animation.KeyFrame;
    import javafx.animation.Timeline;
    import javafx.scene.input.MouseEvent;
    var image: ImageView;
    Stage {
        title: "Test"
        scene: Scene {
            width: 550, height: 350
            content: [
                image = ImageView {
                    x: 20.0, y: 20.0
                    image: Image {
                        url: "http://www.google.it/logos/2010/joseffrank-hp.gif";
                    onMousePressed: function(e: MouseEvent) {
                        timeline.play();
    var timeline = Timeline {

        keyFrames: [
            KeyFrame {
                time: 0s,
                values: [
                    im.x => 20.0,
                    im.y => 20.0
            KeyFrame {
                time: 1s,
                values: [
                    im.x => 150.0,
                    im.y => 150.0
    }

  • Elements 10 Error: d:\pre\mediacore\mediafoundation\api\inc\Keyframe/Keyframe.h-142

    Hi all,
    have spent my hole day at my brother but still no idea what this error could be. After having this project in APE 8.0 and editing it now with the newly bougt Verion 10.0, everything was fine... Opened and saved it several time but today there were suddenly problems: Even a complete new project with the same material and same cut is now broken after having saved and exportet it....
    When we are trying to open the project, we're getting the error:
    "Premiere Elements has encountered an error.
    [d:\pre\mediacore\mediafoundation\api\inc\Keyframe/Keyframe.h-142]
    CONTINUE
    And in the next window:
    Project could no be loaded. It's damaged oder has old elements (not same words, cause my brother is using the german version)
    I have tried everything so long: new installation, opening the damaged project on another computer with ELements 8.0 (identical error also there), deleting cahe, deleting Prefs, loading Auto-Backup (also damaged) and so on... Another "Test-Project" I have created with 2 clips is working fine.... I have no idea what to to else... The project is just a "normal" HD project with 20 Minutes and 20 Clips...
    Everything on google (about 8 sites) I have tried - no success until now... :-(
    so: any ideas???
    Thanks a lot!
    Michael

    Thanks Steve,
    but that's exactly what I did.
    I applied SetAdMichael solution first
    and after RainerBl solution
    and after cloud565 solution
    and even several times each. I thank them for their work.
    I will completely recreate my project, if I have the same problem again I will choose, with regrets, another video editing software. Indeed Adobe seems unable to explain and fix this bug. Adobe Premieres Element 10 is not sufficiently reliable to be used resulted seriously.
    It is unacceptable to lose the result of a several days, including backups.
    I feel like I have been deceived by purchasing this version which ultimately cost me a lot of time and money spent unnecessarily.
    Best regards,

  • Premiere Elements has encountered an error. D:\pre-\mediafoundation\api\inc\Keyframe/Keyframe.h-142

    Hi
    I have seen the discussions about this bug and how you might fix the coding errror in .prel file with help of editing with or without all the tools helpful people provide. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4155936
    These posts are however pretty old and the fixes doesn´t seem to work all the time so I wonder if there is any official bugfix to download? I mean it is a very severe bug - catastropical indeed and I have a very important project to deliver. I fear running into this bug once again. I have already lost one day of production time.
    I got my version 10 installed a month ago and the bug is still there. Yes we use "," instead of "." when specifying numbers
    Thanks

    I assume you have the software installed in a non-English locale. If none of those fixes (perl command, web link etc.) worked for you, I think the best solution is to get Premiere Elements 12. We did hear a lot these issues in PrE10, but none in PrE11 and none so far in PrE 12, so they must have fixed it.
    Retrieving that older corrupt project will really be a futile exercise though. Even if you open it, the perl commands might have only allowed you to open it and I am not sure how much it corrupts the content. (Removing keyframes etc.) If you have a working project, I suggest you take a copy of that right now because you are right that the results can be catastrophical if not fixed. You can do one of the following:
    1. Uninstall the software and reinstall it, this time in English. None of the users had this reported in English AFAIK. You should be able to complete the project this time hopefully. This has not been tried in any of the earlier posts, but seems logical enough to give it a try.
    2. Open it in a later version of Premiere Elements and you should be good to go. But you will have to buy the software, rather than use it in Trial mode because the Trial version applies watermarking on the clips (That's a visible mark on the clip that says "Adobe Premiere Elements Trial").
    I never like to give the "Buy the newer version" as a solution, but this case could just be an exception...
    Good Luck!

  • Is there a way to change opacity keyframe without changing the scrolling keyframe?

    I'm looking at the scroll effects for  Adobe Muse. It's somewhat counter-intuitive but handy enough.  However, there are some problems with positioning or keyframing.
    For instance, Let's say that I have an element containing a logo that I want to be visible as soon as the page loads.  As the page is scrolled I want that element to hold a fixed position for a certain amount of time (or, rather, distance scrolled) and then begin to fade out from that point.
    The sensible way to do this would seem to be to set a start point for my graphic then set its motion to static and then set an end point/position, if required.
    I would then set my opacity to start at 100% at the  top of the page, another key point further down the screen at which the fade would start, and a final point at which the fade  is complete.
    To my mind we should have six independent key frames/positions  - a start position, a mid point (which corresponds to the current end point), and an end point for the motion and the same for the Opacity
    As it stands Muse sets a Key Position (key frame) for the end of any motion and extrapolates the start position from that Key Point and the desired scroll speed.  Unfortunately the Key Position is also tied to the Key Position for the opacity and vice versa.
    This makes the above scenario all but impossible to achieve since you either have to start the fade immediately from the top of the screen (since that is necessarily the point at which you have to make your graphic visible) or change the graphic motion to start from where you want the opacity to change.  Either way the graphic then arbitrarily decides where its start position will be.
    Given that Muse is aimed at non-coding designers who wish to make websites, and given the notoriously pixel-perfect-persnicketiness of said designers, surely this nebulous, toss-it-all-up-in-the-air-and-see-where-it-lands approach to positioning is tantamount to mental torture?
    Or am I missing something?  Is there a way to set these key frames/positions separately?  Even in the generated code?

    just a bump

    I would be glad for the opportunity to customize a Premiere Elements 12 answer to your Premiere Elements 12 issue.
    But, I want to make sure that we are together on the details. This is my understanding of what you have written. Please review and let me
    know if I am misinterpreting anything that you have written.
    You have a video created in Windows Movie Maker.
    How did you output the video from Windows Movie Maker...wmv or mp4, what was the frame size and frame rate of that export?
    Next you import that video into Premiere Elements 12 (can we assume that this is on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit?)
    From what you wrote, you have applied a pan and zoom effect to your video in Premiere Elements.
    Now you go to export the Premiere Elements 12 Timeline content with your video with the pan and zoom applied.
    But, the pan and zoom effect is not seen in playback of the export.
    Is all of the above correct so far?
    If so....we are going to need some more details from you...
    a. What is the project preset that you or the project are setting to match the properties of the video coming from Movie maker? See Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Rate, and Pixel Aspect Ratio even if the fields look grayed out.
    b. Are you applying the pan and zoom effect with the Pan and Zoom Tool, fx Effects Presets, or keyframing the Scale (for Zoom) and
    Position (for Pan) in the Motion Panel expanded?
    c. What are you selecting as your export in Publish+Share/. Please give details...are you using default settings or customizing the export
    setting under the Advanced Button/Video Tab and Audio Tab of the preset selected?
    I am suspecting some sort of mismatch of your project settings or some problems with working with the Pan and Zoom tool. I need
    your answers to help me help you. If I have written anything that you do not understand, please let me know. I will re-write if necessary
    so that we are in sync to resolve the issue.
    Thanks.

  • Premiere Elements NEEDS to be in Creative Cloud

    Many people use a pan/zoom effect for their photos. Granted Premiere gives more total control over the process through effect/motion but the interface is tedious and guesswork. I want to pan over a photo do I really need to guess with x and y axis and numbers that begin with 360 and use negative numbers and set multiple settings in scale and postion...When the LIGHT version does it beautifully and simply already...According to the trial I downloaded and from other users input.
    I would think that those of us who subscribe to creative cloud should have this option included either by updating pro with this interface or bundling elements in the creative cloud. Or at least offer us a signifiant discount to purchase elements. It would make my project so much easier. Thanks.

    I wish Premiere or any Adobe software could implement features found in Sony Vegas Pro.  Much more intuitive on panning and zooming and sizing and keyframs.  And stacking multiple files and doing many types of crossfades is practically automated in Vegas, almost like a WYSIWYG interface.  Audio handing is superior in Vegas too.  There are so few limitations in workflow on the Sony stuff...my clients are blown away at how quickly I can do rough mockups of their ideas.  Someone at Adobe should really take a look.  I think they'd stop touting these "drag and drop crossfades" as a good idea and see them for the murky, unsure method they are.  There is a MUCH easier way, and Sony has been doing it that way for over a decade.  Not to mention you can drag and drop Photoshop files right on to a Vegas timeline, as well as nearly EVERY other type of video, audio, or still.  It doesn't care.  It makes it work.  And in Vegas, you can get at the properties of each individual element to do nearly anything you want under the hood.  It all plays nice together and the layout is so easy to navigate.  Adobe stuff is powerful, but hard to use.  I feel more like a scientist and less like an artist when I use the Adobe interfaces...

  • Premiere Elements 10 Bad/No performance on Win 8 64-bit Core i5-4440 16gig ram and GeForce GTX-650

    Since just over a year i'm the owner of Premiere Elements 10, however it has never pleased me due to bad and inconsistant performance. Just putting video's one after another without any transitions works so-so a few frames per second (which is rediculus). But when i start doing things like motion keyframes, i have no preview at all just a bit of choppy audio. First i thought it was my laptop (a win 7 64-bit core i7 3rd gen, with geforce 610m and 8gig of ram) not bad but i thought well it is a laptop so it might be a bit slower, i'll have to deal with it. However since a few months i own a new PC (specs above), and experience the very same issue. No performance! Every time i think about editing a video i start the program and within a few minutes i get so angry with it that i close it and leave the video's be.
    Pre-Rendering the workspace also has no effect at all. I have no red bar above the timeline (sometimes even green).
    And worst of all it keeps messing up the timing of the video while editing. If you change a clip in the timeline all clips following (the motion edits) are destroyed. Which is only visible after a few hours of rendering, since live preview is only audio.
    What in the world can be done to fix this problem. As you probably can read i'm pretty annoyed.
    The free video editing software that comes with the gopro moves rotates and scales smoothly in live playback, so it is not impossible on the machine. (too bad the functionality of this program is so limited, else i could finally throw Premiere Elements away!).
    Is there anybody who can help me in my despair?

  • Text elements being cropped in my swf

    Problem with my text
    I have a swf
    http://www.ltcproduction.com/flash_test/ltcproditems.html
    where I keyframed the text elements to make them pop, but
    they are being cropped :(
    they play fine in the .fla file
    what should I do?

    Here is a screenshot of what I am exactly talking about:

  • Premiere Elements 8 Initial Impressions

    Premiere Elements 8 First Look: Part 1.
    Photoshop Elements 8 and Premiere Elements 8 are now installed on my Windows XP SP3 with about available 1 GB RAM and 70 GB free hard drive space and the virtual memory controlled by the operating system…not great for a heavy duty project, but adequate to overview the programs.
    1. Download & Installation. Both programs took about 3 ½ hours to download, using high speed DSL. Premiere Elements 8 downloaded and installed without problems. Installation went much quicker. But, Photoshop Elements 8 download did present challenges, first, it kept downloading Premiere Elements 8 instead of Photoshop Elements 8. Finally in the early hours of the morning, the download from the Adobe site was named Photoshop Elements 8. Great, except, once downloaded it would not launch. The launcher did not know what to do with the .7z  file. Download and use of WinZip took care of that. My default browser Mozilla Firefox was worthless for the download of either Photoshop Elements 8 or Premiere Elements 8, but no problems with my Internet Explorer 6. I had this same problem with the Photoshop Elements 7/Premiere Elements 7 downloads last year.
    2. Premiere Elements 8
    a. Organizer. I would take exception to Steve Grisetti’s picture of the Organizer in “What’s new in Premiere Elements 8?”, but maybe I was overly optimistic by “The most visible change to version 8 is that the Organizer is no longer a sub-program of Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements. It now lives as its own, separate, pretty much independent program – behaving more than ever like its professional big brother, Adobe Bridge.” He went on to say “In version 8, both programs have equal access to a single, full-featured Organizer.”
    Here is my dilemma for some who want a separate video and photo catalog. If you had Photoshop Elements 7/Premiere Elements 7, you could create additional catalogs in Photoshop Elements 7. Premiere Elements 7 could use one of these catalogs, but could not create new catalogs. So then, you could have a photo catalog displaying in the Photoshop Elements 7 Organizer and a video catalog displaying when you opened Premiere Elements 7. You cannot do that anymore, and File Menu/Catalog is gone in Premiere Elements 8. You still cannot create catalogs in Premiere Elements 8, so, if you just have Premiere Elements 8, you have ONE catalog. If you have Photoshop Elements 8 and Premiere Elements 8, you can create additional catalogs in Photoshop Elements 8 that can be used in Premiere Elements 8, but these programs will display the same ONE catalog.
    b. Project Presets. The “New Preset” button is gone. The categories of the presets for NTSC and PAL remain the same: AVCHD, DV, “Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorder”, HDV. However, two choices have been added to the “Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorder” categories. Now we have HD 1080i30, HD 1080i30 (60i), Standard, and Widescreen. Here I have a problem reconciling the names and the descriptions. It was my understanding, in Premiere Elements 7 for standard and widescreen in this category, this preset category reverses the Fields: from Upper Field First to Lower Field First in Premiere Elements edits. So, now with these new choices described as follows:
    HD 1080i30: 1920 x 1080i; pixel aspect ratio = square pixels (1.0); camcorders like JVC GZ-HD7; 16:9 interlaced HD video at 29:97 frames per second.
    HD 1080i30 (60i): HD video from 1440 x 1080i camcorders; 16:9 interlaced HD video at 29:97 frames per second HDV 1080i Anamorphic.
    When thinking HD 1080i30 preset….the JVC camcorder captures to a progressive sensor, assumed at 30 frames per second, and can record to it’s built in hard drive as 1920 x 1080i with 30 frames per second each frame with 2 fields. So, what prevents us from calling this preset HD 1080i30 (30p) Square Pixel?
    When thinking HD 1080i30 (60i))…the camcorder involved captures to an interlaced sensor at 60 fields per second, and can record to it media as 1440 x 1080 with 30 frames per second, using a HD Anamorphic. So, what prevents us from calling this preset HD 1080i30 (60i) Anamorphic?
    When I start comparing preset choices, the only reason for using these “Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorder” new choices appears to be, like for standard and widescreen, to have the Fields reversed. Do you agree? Any comments on the nomenclature for these new preset choices?
    3. Adobe Folder, folders and files
    If you go to the default location of the Adobe Folder (My Documents\Premiere Elements\8.0), there are some differences there:
    For Premiere Elements 7 and earlier versions there were:
    Adobe Premiere Elements Previews Folder
    Encoded Files Folder
    Media Cache Folder that piled up with conformed audio files (.cfa and .pek)
    Project Prel file
    Styles Folder
    And sometimes 2 .log files
    Now in Premiere Elements 8, the Media Cache Folder is gone and we have the arrangement:
    Adobe Premiere Elements Previews Folder
    CA Object Track Results
    Encoded Files
    Layouts
    Styles Folder
    (You no longer see the endless conforming of DVD Menus (not even used) at the beginning of the project. But, I am still trying to figure out what they did with the conformed audio files (.cfa and .pek). More on that next time, along with Premiere Elements 8 Exports as well as Photoshop Elements 8/Premiere Elements 8 intergration.

    I have not gotten to Part 3 yet. This is an add on to the last add on.
    I tried to find the Premiere Elements 8 Read Me file since those Read Me files usually contain "Known Bug Messages". I could not find that Adobe had put it online, but I did dig it out of the try out download folder. Here is the excerpt on Premiere Elements 8 known bugs/issues:
    Adobe Premiere Elements 8.0 Known Issues
    Importing Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 and 4.0 Projects
    • Effect keyframes in Premiere elements 3.0 projects may not import correctly
    Capturing and Importing Video
    DV Device control will be disabled and capture will not proceed normally if sound card is not present or offline.
    ·         If capture is interrupted by a system event such as switching users, locking the system, or the screensaver, the duration of the captured file will be much shorter than expected. It is recommended to disable the screensaver before starting capture, and to avoid any actions that may interfere with the capture.
    ·         For live capture from DV camcorders, you must first disable scene detect.
    ·         When importing some Flash files a “Macromedia Flash Player security" message reading “Flash player has stopped potentially unsafe operation" may appear. Click “OK”, and the file will import normally.
    ·         When capturing form HDV camcorders you may see interlace lines in the preview window, The interlace lines do not appear in the captured video

    Photoshop Elements Integration
    • In Photoshop Elements, choosing “Edit in Adobe Premiere Elements” may not bring the Adobe Premiere Elements window to the foreground.
    • If a Photoshop Elements slideshow is sent to Adobe Premiere Elements, further edits in Photoshop Elements will not be reflected in Adobe Premiere Elements.
    • Images saved in Photoshop Elements in BMP mode using the Advanced Settings cannot be imported into Adobe Premiere Elements. This includes images created using Adobe Premiere Elements Freeze Frame function and sent to Photoshop Elements for editing. If the image is saved using Photoshop Elements Advanced Settings, it cannot be returned to Adobe Premiere Elements, and as result, the original, unedited Freeze Frame image will be used.
    • Send to Premiere Elements 8.0 will not work from older versions of Photoshop Elements
    Exporting Movies
    • Export of movies to the root directory of any drive (e.g. D:\) may fail.
    • When exporting movies over one hour to MPEG2 format, the render dialog may continue to be displayed for a period of time after the render progress bar appears to have completed. Rendering is still occurring until the render dialog boxes closes. Clicking Cancel before the render dialog box closes will interrupt this process, and your export file will not be created
    • For play back on a PSP, movies must include both audio and video. Movies exported with video only or audio only will not play back on the PSP.
    • Archival of projects with Type 1 DV-AVI files is not supported.
    • If standard definition menu templates are used when burning to Bluray, menu images s will appear of low quality
    • When attempting to burn a Bluray disc to a previously burned disc, you will see an error message indicating that the disc is incompatible, instead of an error message indicating the disc is full.
    • Movies exported in H.264 format may have a few white frames added to the end
    • Movies exported in MPEG2 format may be a few frames shorter than the original movie
    This seems to answer my question about Photoshop Elements 8/Premiere Element 8 integration regarding slideshows, but may be of more widespread interest to others for the other "known bugs" cited by Adobe.

    I have adobe Premiere Elements 13. It will not let me delete audio or have it fade in or out. I can move the yellow line all the way down till the volume reads -0.0, but the sound is still there on playback. I can click on fade in and fade out and the yellow line that graphs volume takes a sharp raise or dip at the beginning or end of the clip, but there is no change in volume when I play back. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks for the reply. Great news about the volume adjusts.
    Now about those fades for the volume. How are you doing that?
    1. Right click the Timeline video audio and select Fade and then
    see the Fade options (I had a video with audio file, so I saw the choices as shown in the screenshot)
    2. You can also create two volume keyframes at each end of the Timeline audio clip rubberband (orange line that goes horizontally across the middle of the audio clip). At the position of the Timeline Indicator, click the Add/Remove Keyframe icon, and then with the mouse cursor position the white dots (volume keyframes) to achieve the Fade In and Fade Out audio. In the screenshot below I have moved the Timeline Indicator so that you could better see the white dots (volume keyframes).
    Please let us know if any of the above works for you with regard to the audio fades.
    Thank you.

  • Is the only way to keep a behaviour's setting after finish via a keyframe

    Is the only way to keep the final value of a movement behaviour (ie scale, thow etc), once the behaviour ends but the element to which the behaviour was attached hasn't ended, by converting the behaviour to keyframes?
    I can see no other way, although I hope there is one, such as a hold frame or something like that?
    Thanks in advance.

    There's a "End Offset" slider in most behaviors, adjusting that will create a hold value at the end of the behavior. You'll have to extend the behavior's length in the timeline by the same amount as the End Offset to keep the original animation before the hold.

  • How do I add animations to titles using premeire elements 10

    I took a multimedia class at my school which used premeire cs4 and i learned in the class how to make titles and pictures move and do animations using keyframes(like moving on and off screen and spinning etc.) also I don't see how to use green screen effects with this software it seems like it really does not seem like elements 10 does not do that much, or is it just my imagination. and while I'm at it can I get Media encoder for free?

    Yes, you can set up keyframed animations in Premiere Elements, just as you can in Premiere CS4. Just right-click on a clip on your timeline, select Show Properties and open the keyframe workspace, as a show you in my books and in my free PDF article "Basic Keyframing" on Premiere Elements support site Muvipix.com.
    http://muvipix.com/products.php?searchphrase=basic+keyframing&btn.x=0&btn.y=0
    The PC version of the program includes a number of Chroma Key effects, including Green Screen and Blue Screen. However, the Mac version includes only Videomerge, a semi-automatic Chroma Key tool. Are you on a Mac or a PC?
    The Media Encoder is included only with Pro versions of the software, not Elements. However, you can output dozens of formats from Premiere Elements. All you need to do is decide where you ultimately plan to display your video.
