Keys not working: brightness, volume

Macbook Pro 13 inch, Mid 2012
OS 10.9.5 Mavericks
Processor  2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
4GB memory
I connected an old LG 22-inch monitor via dongle for the first time. It worked well, and then I removed it. Now some keys on my keyboard are not working correctly:
brightness keys don't do anything, volume keys don't change volume and left volume key moves the windows to the sides and back, the right moves the screen image forward and back to the screen with the calculator, alarm clock, calendar, weather. etc. with the circled  + and  -  in left bottom corner, and right arrow at the bottom right....whatever that screen is called. I tried resetting the PRAM, and a soft boot to no avail. There may be other keys cruelly afflicted. thanks

I was told by a tech to uncheck the "use all F1, F2..." box found by first going to Apple Menu System: Preferences. It worked!

    Re: iPhone 4S sound problems
    Dec 29, 2011 2:05 PM (in response to unowen57)
    Hi Guys,
I have post eariler on another forum and I have the same problem, I have tried all the things listed here and nothing was perminant in fixing this painful iphone hating problem.... and failed.  You probably have the problem when you use youtube or your music external speaker that there is no volume bar and no sound.   I have had the same problem But I need to happily say that I now have the fix!!!!  This worked for me and I fixed it by myself so you don't need to go to apple or service centre or anything.
Ok I like so many of you here truly believed this was as IO5 issue as it only dropped the sound on the speakers once that IO5 update came along.  I tried a bunch of reset, reboots, home clicks, lock and unlocks, to fix this and all failed.  some worked for an hour but then failed.  hours of my life that I will never get back.   but since I have learnt this is not a IO5 problem but a hardware issue! ...  and in paticualar is has to do with your bottom connection.  Your phone is thinking it is docked all the time.
To fix the no sound problem what you need is...
    1.  a torch
    2.  a tooth brush
    3.  methalated spirits
    4. a butter knife
    Step 1.
get your torch and shine it down the bottom connection plate to see what kind of dust, sand, hair or anything you have stuck in there.   all that need to be removed!  everything!  it might look clean but still thats ok go to step 2.
    step 2.
Turn on your music app and put the speakers on!  If your phone is like mine it should not work.  you most probably don't even have the volume display to turn it on but its ok, just do it! and it should still play with no sound.   its important you try and run the speakers as this will show you that it is a hardware problem.
    step 3.
Dip your tooth brush into some methated sprits.   then at your sink tap the exess metho out of your brush as you just want the brushes to be slightly damp, not soaking wet and then scrub the bottom connetiors on your iphone.  work the brush back and forward in a way that scoops the dirt out of the phone, not just pushing it side to side.
(As you bushing you should notice the volume bar come back on or off as you scub.   This happened to me and that is how I realised I was on the right track to fixing this problem as I was doing something external that was actually controling when the volume display came on or off.   but once I cleaned it this still didn't fix the problem...)
    Step 4.
Use the back side of a butter knife (not the sharp side) to gently slide over the connectors on the iphone.  Do this gently as you are only pushing down on the tiny metal contect bars and you should notice the volume display come on again.  slide it back and forward.  Now the area of interest is about 2/3 along the connection plate to the right.   This is the area that has the infomation sent when your iphone thinks its docked.
This has worked for me and I have not had a problem since I did this 2 weeks ago.   I have since learnt that the new IOS 5 has activated a different part of the bottom conectors.  if you have been using dodgy connectors or unapproved apple cables (as I was)  any damage or hair and dirt on the terminal this is effecting it.  Try it.   just remember if you can do something external to your phone then there lies the problem.
Hope this works for your phone as it did for mine.
    Cheers

  • Volume and brightness keys not working with new keyboard on imac

I just purchased a new wired keyboard for imac and brightness and volume control keys not working . i have tried adjusting keyboard settings. I have software version 10.5.8. Do I need to upgrade software. Thank you for any help.

Do you have "Automatically Adjust Brightness" check box ticked in System Preferences > Displays > Display ? If so, you can't manually adjust brightness.

  • MacBook ('08) function keys not working (volume, etc) XP SP3, Bootcamp 2.1

    I have just upgraded from a MacBook Core Duo 2.0Ghz (mid-2006) to a MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz (mid-2008).
I had Windows XP (SP3) installed and running nicely on a partition on the old MacBook, and what I've now done is simply swapped that whole hard drive from the old MacBook to the new one. OSX (10.5) runs just fine, but Windows is giving me issues. I successfully reactivated Windows, and then did a repair installation from my original WinXP install disc, which took Windows back to Service Pack 2. I used the OSX install DVD that came with the new MacBook to install the Boot Camp Windows drivers (version 2.0), and then downloaded and ran the Boot Camp 2.1 update, and then upgraded to WinXP Service Pack 3.
The trackpad on the new MacBook is working in Windows, as is MOST of the keyboard. Only the function keys aren't working (brightness, volume, eject, etc.). I've tried using them both with and without holding down the "fn" key in the bottom-left of the keyboard, and both with and without the setting checked (in Windows Boot Camp prefs) for using the function keys for hardware purposes.
I can't help but think that the problem arises form the different layouts of the 2006 MacBook and the 2008 MacBook. The 2006 model used the F3, F4, and F5 keys for volume (mute, decrease, increase), while the 2008 model uses F10, F11, and F12.
When I look under Add/Remove programs in Windows, I see that there are still old Apple drivers for keyboard and other devices. I see versions of the drivers going back to 1.x, and also 2.0 and 2.1.
In efforts to start afresh, I've tried using both the Boot Camp 2.1 Updater and my 2008 MacBook Install DVD (which has Boot Camp 2.0) to remove Boot Camp from Windows, but neither seem to really do the trick in terms of really removing all the Boot Camp components and drivers, and reinstalling the Boot Camp drivers doesn't get the keyboard function keys working.
I've tried everything I can think of (short of erasing the partition and starting with a fresh install of WinXP, which is NOT an option). Is there some way to remove the old (or all) Apple drivers in order to install Boot Camp components anew? Or would that even get the keyboard working anyway? Any other ideas at solving this problem? Thanks very much.

    AHA!!!! FIXED IT!!!
    Found another forum post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7688314&
And that reminded me that the little Boot Camp grey diamond icon wasn't appearing in the tray like it should. I found KbdMgr.exe and tried to open it, but got an error. So I deleted it and did repair/update from Boot Camp 2.1 Updater, rebooted, and now KbdMgr.exe is running, the icon is in the tray, and the function keys (volume, brightness, etc) are working! Hooray!!
So in conclusion, this problem may not have been due to the different keyboard layouts, but could've been something about SP3 & BootCamp 2.1. Maybe. Who knows. I'm just happy I've got it working.

  • Volume keys not working on wireless keyboard

    Hi guys!
My f10-11-12 keys are not working for volume purposes. I went into prefereces, keyboard, uncheck/check the "use F1, F2... blahblah" and the problem is still there.
    I am using a macbookpro 13" 10.6.6.
By the way, if I try to do the same in the built-in macbookpro keyboard it works
This post did not help either https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2298682?start=0&tstart=0
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for asnwering... Yes, of course I have tried because is how it works
It could be that fn key does not work, but it isnt since If I uncheck the box "use fn key for f1 f2 standar.." the volume keys still not working.

  • Brightness key not working with Dell monitor

Should my new wireless keyboard brightness keys be working with my Dell monitor?

Hello I managed to solve my problem of brightness key not working by Installing the Intel HD Graphic 3000 Driver from Intel official site. my volume key not working, volume increase automatically if i go to audio settings i can adjust, but  again volume increase automatically , how to mute all audio

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comeback again?
If this does not boring back a working volume control, and to rule out a software issue, set it up as new device, explained here:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
If still no luck, you'll have to get it checked by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place.

  • Toshiba Laptop Function Keys not working

Hi: I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A laptop. It is a year old, and it came with Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. I recently upgraded to Windows 10, but then after a week I decided to downgrade back to Windows 7 for personal reasons. My function keys (like the brightness up and down, volume up and down, mute, wifi, play music etc.) worked before and worked in Windows 10, but for some reason when I downgraded back to Windows 7 most of them have stopped working properly. When I press the keys what I get is the function of the actuall F1-12 key (e.g. full screen, search, refresh) and not the brightness, volume etc. The special functions only works when I have to press the FN key at the same time, which is kind of troublesome. I also no longer get the useful notification in the corner of my screen when I press the buttons of, for example, what level (4/8 for example) of brightness I'm at or what level of volume I'm at. Solutions I have tried / checked:-I have checked in All Programs > Toshiba > Tools and Utilities > HWSetup > Keyboard, and the setting for Function Keys mode is correctly set to "Special function mode". But it still doesn't work.-I've installed Toshiba Value Added Package.-Function Keys is enabled in Flash Cards. Is there anyway I can get them back to a working state, because they were really useful before, without having to factory reset my laptop? Thanks, Tiffany

You may want to download and install the System Driver from Toshiba support website

  • FN keys not working Hp probook 4320s

    Hello
I am having a problem with the FN keys on a HP Probook 4320s and using openbox.
When I tried an ubuntu live cd the brightness, volume etc, worked just fine.
Using xev I got this output while hitting the keys
KeyRelease event, serial 40, synthetic NO, window 0x1800001,
        root 0x152, subw 0x0, time 1722303, (-375,141), root:(717,436),
        state 0x0, keycode 233 (keysym 0x1008ff02, XF86MonBrightnessUp), same_screen YES,
        XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
        XFilterEvent returns: False
Also when I echo a value in  /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness the brightness changes but still fn keys not working.
Can anyone help me with this?.

I am having a problem with the FN keys on a HP Probook 4320s and using openbox.
When I tried an ubuntu live cd the brightness, volume etc, worked just fine.
Openbox is a window manager, not an environment like Gnome. It manages windows, not your screen brightness and wireless settings.
I can reverse the action in ubuntu and see what is wrong in arch.
Nothing is wrong. And your keys work fine, I know because mine do.
Is there a way to see what is called when pressing the keys in ubuntu?
They developed their own notifications that handle this. You can just call xbacklight and amixer for a start from xbindkeys.
For volume and brightness an applet is nicer to get the visal cue, you can do that with a little bash and Zenity easily, or code your own in GTK (I used pygtk for mine).

  • Sound key not working

volume key not working ofter last update

    Hello Amandodsouza,
It sounds like you are experiencing some unexpected behaviour with the on screen keyboard after updating to iOS 7.1.1. I would start by closing all the running apps on the phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that and restart the phone and test the issue again:

You can use the traditional FN + F key mode or just an F key mode.
This can be enabled and disabled in BIOS or the HWSetup
In BIOS go to Advanced -> System configuration -> Function key mode
    This mode can be changed
Also be sure that Function Button option is enabled too

  • IPad 2 and Apple wireless keyboard (function keys not working)...

    Hello all,
I just purchased the Apple wireless keyboard to use with an iPad 2. It pairs fine and I can type away but none of the function keys work (brightness, volume etc). Anyone have any ideas? I think these worked fine on earlier keyboard models.
    All help gratefully accepted,
    Irlandés
    P.S. I'm running iOS 4.3.4 (8K2)

    Lrlandés-
I never tried my function keys before, but most are working under iOS 4.3.5.  I get no response for F3, F4, F5 or F6.  I suspect those may be App-specific.
What model keyboard is yours?  Mine is MC184LL/A, according to the box it came in.

Checked the topics about this issue but still haven't found a solution.
The "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys." is unchecked. Tried everything, also to reconnect the device via bluetooth, turned it off etc. but still not working.
One of my Shift keys not working as well (the right one). Ony the volume keys that are working since i have upgraded to Mavericks.
