Keyword compatability

Sorry if this has been covered already but I can't find what I'm looking for by searching. Can someone please either explain or point me to an easy-to-understand explanation of keyword compatability across programs. I use iPhoto very little but I am seriously considering switching over to it. My concern is that the keywords won't show up outside of iPhoto. I use Photoshop CS2 a lot. I currently use iView Media Pro for organizing but I have also tried Lightroom Beta and Bridge and I am considering, but have not used, Aperture. If I am going to switch to iPhoto, I would like any keywording that I do in the program to be recognized in Adobe programs (especially if I stop using iPhoto in the future) Is that possible? I understand there are some standards issues going on with XMP and IPTC Core, none of which make sense to me. A beginners guide to metadata and what not would be appreciated.

Chet:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You're right in that iPhoto keywords stay in iPhoto. They are stored in the AlbumData.xml file and not written to the actual file. There is a way to get them written to the actual file. It involves using iView MediaPro in it's demo mode (good for 21 days). Check out Tutorial #1. It may be a one time thing as the demo is only good for 21 days. I use iView as my primary along with iPhoto on the same set of source files. I have iPhoto in it's alias mode so there's only one set of source files on my HD. Any edits made by iPhoto will not touch the original files and not be seen by iView. However, any edit by iView will be recognized by iPhoto when it uses the full sized image file in books, slideshows, etc. However, the thumbnail will remain the same.

  • Lightroom 5 and Bridge 6- Color Label and Keyword compatibility

    I've added color labels and keywords to images in Lightroom 5 but I'm not seeing them in Bridge CC.
    Lightroom Metadata > Color Label Set is set to Lightroom Default (Red-Yellow etc.
    And Bridge Preferences > Labels is also set with "Red, Yellow etc" text.
    In other words they are the same,  But I'm not seeing the color labels or the keywords in Bridge.
    Thanks,

    The answer to this problem is that, in order for Bridge and Lightroom to share labels etc. Lightroom has to write its metadata into xmp sidecar files.
    To do this go to: Lightroom > Catalog Settings > Metadata Tab and check : Automatically write changes into XMP.

  • Searching database

    I have a table that has bug(description,subject or something). i want to search it by keyword.
    for example, a user enters "compatibility with Internet Explorer".
    i want to find "compatibility" word and "Internet Explorer" from the table. then should i make a string array
    like
    String[] keywords = {"compatibility", "Internet Explorer"};
    and search like this?
    List result = new ArrayList();
    for( int i = 0; i < keywords.length; i++ )
    String sql = "select * from table where %description% = keywords;
    String searchResult = search(sql);
    result.add(searchResut);
    i am kind of stuck in making an array with user's input and searching by keyword... please help...
    Thanks in advance...

    This is a SQL question and maybe you should look into SQL tutorials for this since the key to solvng your problem is to make a valid SQL statement that represents your query.
    The following SQL Query would return all rows that had the two keywords in the record 'description':
    List result = new ArrayList();
    if(keywords.length == 0) {
        throw new Exception("You must supply at least one keyword.");
    else {
      String SQL = "SELECT * FROM table WHERE";
      for( int i = 0; i < keywords.length; i++ )  {
        if(i > 0) sql = sql + " OR";
        sql = sql + " description LIKE '"+keywords[0]+"'";
      String searchResult = search(sql); // I guess this performs a query :)
    }

  • Hierarchical keywords and vista compatability

    Any chance Lightroom could export/write Hierarchical Keywords that are compatible with Vista?
    http://blogs.msdn.com/pix/archive/2007/02/01/hierarchical-tags-and-xmp.aspx
    I expored a photo with hierarchical keywords in Lightroom and they did not appear in Windows Photo Gallery.
    Looking at the jpg in notepad it appears that the parent/child relationship is not written in the XMP block. The keywords are instead flattened.

    As far as I know there needs to be better standards on how hierarchical keywords are stored in XMP. It would be ideal if there was a standard to store hierarchical keywords in legacy ICPT fields, even though they were not designed for a hierarchy. Just getting everyone to agree on the delimiter would be a great help. I'd like to be able to store my hierarchical keywords on my jpg ICPT fields as a backup that is independent of side car files and ideally independent of any software, right now users have to jump through a lot of hoops to make keywords written in one application, perfectly compatible with another one.

  • Lion OS and COmpatibility with Non_English keywords

    Hello There,
    I ran into strange problem which I have not experienced before. I mean when I go through such websites like: مهاجرت کانادا and کانادا مهاجرت and مهاجرت به کانادا . I see some messy content which I do not see when I am working with Leopard! do I need any specific setting for Lion in that regards?
    Thank you

    Could you send me a screen shot of what you mean by "messy words"?
    If you are using Safari, do you have the same problem with FireFox?

  • Images not displaying at their normal size, and not all keywords displaying, why?

    Not sure what's going on inside Adobe Bridge CC 2014.1, but why is it that my images are not displaying at full size. Bridge says they're displaying at 100% but I know that's not the case, because when I open the same images in Mac OS Preview (OS 10.10.1 Yosemite) at 100% they're much bigger. Is there a viewing preference setting I'm missing?
    Also, I use Bridge and Photoshop on two mac pro desktops: one at my office and one at home.
    At work, I created more than 30 keywords in Bridge for several hundred images that reside on my external thunderbolt hard drive. But when I take that hard drive home and connected it to my home mac and then open Bridge, only a handful of keywords appear. I don't see the full list of keywords that I created at work. But in Bridge, I didn't see any option to save or export keywords as a file.
    Although the image metadata does appear, because whatever keyword i assigned to an image at work does display on the home mac, I just don't see the entire keyword list.
    Can or should Bridge therefore only be used on one computer? Is it not possible to transfer the entire Bridge keyword list from one mac to another?
    Thanks in advance for any help feedback with this.

    Hi Zenos,
    I've discovered what is causing the problem, but I still need a way to fix it, if possible.
    The cause of the problem is that in Windows 7 Control Panel > Display I have set the size of "text and other items" to 150% (otherwise everything is much too small too read on my screen's recommended resolution of 1920×1080).
    I discovered that Irfan Viewer was also displaying at the incorrect resolution, but I managed to solve that problem by right-clicking on the IrfanView.exe icon and following Properties > Compatibility and selecting "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings".
    I tried the same procedure with Thunderbird, but it made no difference. It is still displaying at the incorrect resolution.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Catsix

  • File explorer (windows 8) doesn't show the properties of pdf files such a keywords or tittle. Neither when click on second button. I just see them when the file is opened with adobe reader (file prperties)

    I attach some picture to show the problem.
    Im sorry because the os is in spanish, so i translate for you the fileds names shown
    etiquetas means tags or keywords or labels, as you can see in the first picture at the second row, some file (office pack) show the tags but the selected one doesn't (pdf).
    propiedades means properties. The properties shown are different if I opened from file explorer to acrobat.
    I think there is a compatibility problem with the xmp file (metadata) from pdf file ans windows 8.1 (64bits). I tried to solve it by installing a missing file called ifilter, but the problem continues

    I believe this is all normal.

  • LR4 - Hierarchical Keyword Metadata Writing Problem

    Having found a problem with LR4 in reading hierarchical metadata from photo files, I now seem to have found a similar problem when writing metadata to files.
    As before, I use hierarchical keywords with the "/" character as the separator in the photo files metadata.
    Let's say I assign the keyword "Christmas" to a photo. This actually has the hierarchy "Events/holidays/Christmas"
    When I write out the metadata to the photo, I want, and expect, the hierarchical keyword string to be written: Events/holidays/Christmas.
    Instead, what I get are three separate keywords written out separated by commas: Events,holidays,Christmas.
    This is pointless - LR4 has just destroyed my keyword hierarchy and just given me a flat list of keywords.
    Is this a bug, or is this indeed expected behaviour of LR4? Because if it's the latter, then LR4 is not going to work for me as a metadata editor.
    Thanks

    That's the expected behavior of LR 3 and 4.   Some background:
    There is no widely accepted industry standard yet for handling hiearchical keywords.  (The Metadata Working Group has defined a standard, but I don't know of any application that has implemented it yet.)
    LR stores hierarchical keywords in the XMP:HierarchicalSubject metadata field (a non-standard field recognized by LR and Bridge), with the elements of the hierarchy separated by "|", e.g. Events|Holidays|Christmas.   In the industry-standard field XMP:Subject, LR only stores non-hierarchical keywords.  You can control whether the containing keywords (e.g. Events and Holidays) are also stored in the XMP:Subject field with the keyword options Export Containing Keywords and Include On Export.
    Other non-standard approaches store hierarchical keywords in the XMP:Subject field, with the elements separated by "|", ".", or "/".  For compatability, LR will recognize those hierarchical keywords when it reads metadata, controlled by the options in Preferences > File Handling.  But LR always writes out its hierarchical keywords using its own non-standard approach.
    Perhaps in a few years, the industry will have converged on a standard and implemented it.

  • RMI-IIOP Compatability

    We are using weblogic 8.lSP5 and are having trouble rmi-iiop compatability with other containers.
    Weblogic mangles an exception name like mycompany.exception.FooException as IDL:mycompany/exception/FooEx:1.0.
    Other containers including websphere and sun mangle the exception name as IDL:mycompany/_exception/FooEx:1.0
    According to the spec it seems that IDL keywords like exception should be escaped with the leading underscore.
    This mismatch prevents us from using the same set of client stubs to access ejbs on both containers.

  • Binary upward compatibility

    Hi,
    It's writtern on this page (http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/compatibility.jsp#incompatibilities) that Java5.0 is upward compatible with v1.4.2 except for the list of specified imcompatibilities. Part of the list, is the new keyword enum used for typsafe enumeartions in Java 5.0.
    Nevertheless, I've tried to run some 1.4 compiled bytecode making use of the enum keyword with the 5.0 JRE and I haven't noticed any issues. So the upward compatibility seems to work, even for the enum keyword.
    Does anybody have some more details on this issue ?
    Thks,
    Tristan

    Thanks for your answer. What do you mean by: "if you were using it in a manner that is consistent with version 5 requirements". enum is a reserved keyword in java 5 so I don't see how it is possible to make use of it in a consistent way to java 5.
    To illustrate my first post, here is what I tested. The simple following code is compiled with 1.4.2:
    String enum = "enum";
    System.out.println(enum);
    Then I tried to execute it with 5.0 JRE, and it works fine. But of course, if you try to re-compile the code with 5.0, it will fail as enum is now a reserved keyword for enums ...
    Is there a logical explanation why this 1.4.2 byte code would work in 5.0 without needing a fix and a recompilation ?

  • IPhoto and geotagging / GPS compatibility?

    Hi,
    I'm interested in adding location information to new pictures that I take, but I would like to do so in a way that is compatible with iPhoto. Any advice on the following:
    1. Does iPhoto have space to store lat/lon information in photo metadata? How will I be able to view this data?
    2. To what extent is the format for such data standardized? (i.e., is this similar to ID3 tags on MP3s in that any program I import an MP3 into will "know" the file's "title" and "artist"... or if 2 years from now I decide to switch to a different photo management program, are these fields likely to be lost/useless?)
    3. Are the answers for the above different for JPEG and .NEF (Nikon RAW) files?
    4. Does anyone have experience using an "aftermarket" GPS geotagging device (e.g. "ATP PhotoFinder") with iPhoto? Any compatibility recommendations/warnings?
    Thanks!

    Mike:
    The metadata is stored in the database file and is not written to the image file until it is exported out of iPhoto with the option to include keywords activated. Then it has to be imported into iPhoto for it to be recognized. A good feature to suggest to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Catalogs and keywords

    Hi,
    I'm using Photoshop Elements and think about switching to Lightroom and the full Photoshop.
    What concerns me is there any compatibility between the catalogs and keywords so it's possible to migrate my collection.
    And what is the best way to go, use Lightroom for the catalog, Bridge or Elements or maybe abondone these altogheter and go for a third party catalog program.
    Could anybody give me any clues and thoughts about this, my collection is now about 5000 pics, jpeg and raw.
    TIA,
    Leo Liekens

    Use Lightroom for the cataloguing and adjusting, and then Elements when you need to edit some pixels - but only use one program for cataloguing. You could add Photoshop as well if you find you need/want it.

  • Backwards Compatibility mapper module was not able to start

    Hi ,
    We have an issue with our SCOM 2012 agents not getting discovered because the Backwards Compatibility mapper module was not able to start.
    I checked few blogs and could see the remediation for SCOM 2007 SP1.

    Hi Jesty,
    Based on the Article it seems to be for SCOM 2007 SP1.
    And as you mentioned you are using SCOM 2007 R2. I see that Microsoft has fixed this issue about the article you have mentioned above.
    Below is the article from MS for that.

    computer properties for a cluster node may not be collected by the discovery process in System Center Operations Manager 2007 Service Pack 1
    Check the below link where MS has mentioned it has fixed this issue in SCOM 2007 R2.

    So i dont think it is necessary for
    you to install this Hotfix

  • Feature request: Better keywording options

    There appears to be no improvements in keywording otpions in LR4b.
    How about:
    Larger panels of suggested keywords. (could be configuarable in options, like the number of recent files option in PS)
    Larger numbers of keywords in a set.
    Buttons to apply a complete set with one click.
    Put the keywording tools,( ie the same panels as in library module),  in the import dialogue.

    Hi Deepak
    Thanks for your response. Don't take this the wrong way and please don't feel like I'm shooting the messenger here, but honestly speaking I think rtf *and* fdr format compatibility should be in your frontlog considering you are making a version 1 product that's trying to compete or at least compliment industry standard tools!
    Having only fdx compatibility is like Office 2007/2010 only having .docx with no backwards compatibility for legacy formats - it renders the tool useless in the eyes of many potential customers. It great to push new and more open formatting standards but there must, must, must be legacy support too - I mean you already support import of rtf and fdr so it's nuts that it doesn't go out that way too!
    I have found that having .txt and .pdf as a bridge for the older software tends to be an inefficient workaround. There are always occasional formatting errors that crop up due to the use of some type of special character that isn't translated properly in the conversion and therefore there is always a need to spend an additional 15-20 minutes re-checking entire scripts to make sure there are no problems before sharing the material to a colleague or client who either cannot afford to or hasn't bothered to upgrade to Final Draft 8 (or Adobe Story ).
    That's just my two cents but I'm sure that many people would agree with me that this small update should be a priority to make AS (sorry, I've gone an abbreviated another one of your products - doh!) a more appealing alternative to the tools people may have been used to in the past.
    Hope you take this pledge into serious consideration for your next upcoming update!
    Thanks,
    Kaush

  • Lightroom Keyword Searching in Windows

    Hello all. First Would Like to give a big Thanks to all the people that answer questions around here, I normally dont have to post because i can find my answers in the previous questions. Well not this time, so here goes. When I keyword in lightroom I was wondering if there is a setting or prefrence to check that will submit my keywords to the actual windows property box of the photo(the box where you right-click on the photo and choose properties)in that box there is a keyword heading and i want to transfer my keywords to this box and I believe I can search from withing windows to locate these photos, although i am unsure on that i want to try. I have tried exporting photos and saving metadata and that didn't work. The reason i am trying to do this is so that when I work on photos for people and I send them back they dont need lightroom or photoshop to search through large amounts of files to locate photos. Sorry for being long winded but i am trying to be as complete as possible. any help would be greatly Appreciated.THANKS in advance

    Hi mmbamrski and OP,
    I think of keywords in Lightroom as being "for Lightroom's eyes only". But then:
    - Set "include on export" attribute for keywords that should be visible externally.
    - Upon export, do NOT export as Lightroom hierarchy (for maximum compatibility with non-Lightroom consumers).
    Then after finishing in Lightroom, I always export jpegs for outside consumption.
    WIndows can search these exported jpegs and see the keyword metadata in them. And, they can also be used for any other purposes without having to go into Lightroom and do a special-purpose export (screen-saver, slide-shows, photo-books, web, email, CDs, serving via DLNA ...)
    I find these plugins useful in this regard:
    TreeSync
    ExportManager
    Hope this helps,
    Rob
