KIN Two M Review

Ok folks! I got my new KIN today. I've only had it a few hours and wanted to give my impression(s). Like most everyone else I've read a lot of bad things about the KIN but I wanted (needed) to see for myself. On paper it just looked too good.
My old phone was the Voyager. Look it up. It's a lot like the enV Touch. Before that I had a Samsung Omnia and before that an enV (1). And before that... I don't even remember.
So, as a reference to my opinion, for anyone who has any experience with any of the phones I listed:
1) the Voyager was a good phone. Kind of big. Touch screen was not the best. Nowhere near iPod/iPhone quality. But overall I was satisfied with the phone.
2) Samsung Omnia. {word filter avoidance}
! Worst phone ever produced! This phone was so bad I reactivated my old phone after 7 days of really trying to learn it and like it. Forget about it or anything else with Windows Phone on it.
3) enV was good. It was pretty new and different then. I liked it a lot.
Ok. So, now to the KIN: first impression: relieved! this is a really cool phone. You have to see it not as a smart phone but as a feature phone. As a smart phone it will strike you as limited. As a feature phone it is the coolest phone I've ever seen. It does everything my old phone does and does it easily. So, my recommendation is if you're wavering, order it.
Now to some specifics:
Touch screen: if you've ever used a Touch iPod or iPhone or an Android, it's just like that. It is the first thing that hit me and it's worth the price of admission alone. After using resistive capacitive phones this thing will change the way you view touch screens.
Contacts list: get over it! Verizon screwed up on this (big time!!) but forget about it! Sit down with a cold one and enter in your contacts. PITA but worth having this phone for.
Messaging: Hmmm... it's more like instant messaging than text messaging. Each person is like a long running conversation. When you text, you are continuing a conversation. So you see all the texts you exchanged with that person. Of course, just like Instant Messaging, when you delete you delete the whole conversation. Is that a big deal? Not for me. I liked being able to save old text messages but, come on! It's not that big of a deal. I'll adapt. And no, you can't forward. I've forwarded maybe 10 messages in my life. So, again, not a great loss for me. And you can't get the little picture emoticons that normal feature phones do. But it's kind of like texting someone on AT&T from a Verizon phone.
IN EXCHANGE: it has a really (REALLY) neat feature that pops up a little balloon in whatever you're doing with any incoming texts. You can go to texting or ignore it. I LOVE it. It sounds less cool than it is. I would easily trade any lost feature for it. And it has a text emoticon button. This is too cool. You're texting, you hit the button, you get a little menu of emoticons, hit one and go back to texting.
Internet: This is it! Works awesome! Not everything but I'm amazed at how much DOES work. You can surf the internet on your cellphone WITHOUT a data plan! Forget about all the things it can't do. It can do plenty. Don't forget, this isn't a smart phone. It's (just) a feature phone. And seen from that prospective, well, show me another feature phone that can surf the net for free!
I synced a bunch of albums to the Zune player. It works great and picks up the cover art to boot!  BTW the radio works fantastic! And a 3.5mm headphone jack. Too cool!
I don't plug products very often but I've read a lot of bad things about this phone. While they may all be true to a degree, they are, imo, WAY over blown. This is a cool phone and I'm keeping it!

Just receieved my kin twom yesterday in the mail. Activation was a little hairy for some reason as I had to call in to customer support and have them add in my phone manually as opposed to *228 option 1..other than that the phone is rather nice. I used to have a droid eris, lg dare and an octane while the wife has an env3 and an ipod touch.
I'd have to put the kin twom somewhere inbetween the droid eris and the octane/env3 review wise. The touch screen is rather nice, clear to see and use with very little lag if any. Setting up the phone was rather easy as well although I DID have to enter contacts in manually (however with the keyboard its not that hard at all). Weight wise its a little heavier, I think, than the ipod touch but not painfully heavy by any means. Audio quality in both music and simple talk is rather impressive...in my opinion much better than the Octane/env3. Adding ringtones was definately a pain though as I had to 1. move the ringtones I had stored on my computer to the memory card of my wife's env3 2. send those ringtones from my wifes env3 to my phone 3. save the ringtones from the mms message I receieved.Contrary to a previous post I read the ringtones are saved individually by the name of the sound that was sent..NOT unnamed. Ringtones CAN be assigned to individual contacts as well as you can assign a custom sound for voicemail, messages calendar alerts and alarms.
In order to store any other music (mp3 albums and the like) or pictures, videos and podcasts you DO need to use the Zune software however I don't see that as a real deterrent especially if you're used to an ipod. Space on the phone is limited (limited as in I can only put on about 110 or so albums of my mp3 collection). When you first receieve your phone you have approximately 6.5gig free of memory (as opposed to 8gig).
Web browsing definately works and while it may not be super speedy it is definately useable for simple forum reading, facebook updates, etc.
All in all I'd give it a 4 out of 5 as a feature phone and a 2.75 as a smartphone. I'd HIGHLY recommend this phone for anyone that wants what I call an intelligent (as opposed to smart) phone...aka ability to text, listen to music, and mild web browsing with NO data plan required (provided you have wifi). Make sure you DO download/look at the manual posted in this thread as the phone itself does not come with an actual manual(just a quick guide that doesn't explain much).
Some things I found out that may not be posted in the manual: When typing anything and you want to permanetly use the symbols/green button functions press the green button twice and that will make anything you type use the symbols (as opposed to pressing it once for only one symbol). If you have issues with charging the phone try charging it from a computer as opposed to the outlet that is supplied, while it may take longer I've found it to be a better charger. Any other questions please feel free to ask and I'll mess with the phone and get you an answer .
Almost forgot...you can block data without having to call anyone by using the 'my verizon' feature on the verizonwireless website. I don't remember exactly where it is listed but its somewhere under 'change features' I believe. You do NOT need to disable roaming data nor do you need to enable airplane mode (enabling airplane mode can in essence DISable your actual phone calling and receieving capabilites). • KIN Two M Review Update

    UPDATE:
When I went to the original thread today, I saw that it had kind of become a gripe thread against Verizon. All of that aside, I wanted to give an update on how the KIN is working for me after 2 or 3 weeks. I posted this exact write up on that thread but then thought that a lot of folks might not get past all of the other stuff. So I started a new thread too.
My first comment is : It's a free ZUNE player! That's my number 1 comment. I love it. I watch videos on it. I listen to audio books, podcasts and of course music. It's awesome and it was free!
Also, it's a pretty cool camera. I like the way you can zoom in and out with 2 fingers. Quality-wise, well, it's a cell phone after all. Pretty good but I have a good camera for when I need better. But I always have this one on me.
I really like it's ability to go on the web. On a device this small, it's mostly a time filler. Like if I'm waiting somewhere I might log on to the local network and check out the news or something. I did some ordering via Amazon and could check the status. I also followed my fantasy football team from time to time. The best results come from sites that have mobil pages.
And I can check my email. Although it doesn't like emails that include images. And I have yet to find an attachment that it will open. But I haven't been trying that hard. I have my laptop with me most of the time.
And as to the phone: it is not the most intuitive phone. Answering involves unlocking it. That works ok. But hanging up is a little strange if you try to do something before you actually hang up. You have to go back into the phone app and press End Call. So, REMEMBER! Press End Call before you do anything else. I like the dialer. The Favorite Contacts is pretty good because you get a direct link to it from the main screen. But looking up contacts is not the most straight forward. Mostly just a learning curve thing.
Text messaging: This phone is not good for text messaging for a couple reasons. First, I don't like the way you have to go to the contacts list to find the person you want to message to and then to choose to call or text them. With a normal phone you go to messaging and then add the person or a number. Seem more intuitive to me. But maybe that's 'cause I've been doing it that way for so many years. I'll be patient on this one. The fact that you can't erase a single text message without erasing ALL texts from that person might be annoying. I'm still undecided about this. Normal phones have a memory limit for texts. This one probably does too but with 8GB on board it's got to be A TON of texts so why erase? I dunno. I guess I haven't made up my mind about this yet.
But another reason I don't love texting on this phone, and it's a general complaint, this phone is ergonomically one of the worst devices I've ever used. It is hard to hold, hard to open and hard to close. The sides slope inwards giving your fingers little to no purchase. Weird! Did anyone at Verizon/ Microsoft actually try using this phone before they produced it?! It's not a deal breaker but it's a poor design. Too bad we can't find out the engineer's name so we could avoid his designs in the future.
Settings: classic Microsoft! You have one menu for volume and one menu for sounds on and off. Way too complicated for a simple function.
I could go on and on about lots of little details. After all, this is a pretty versatile device that spends most of it's time in my pocket. People have a relationship with their cellphones.
But after all is said and done, if I could change one thing and one thing only it would be the RECENT tab. This should be a HOME tab that gets you back to the main screen. A RECENT function saves you ZERO keystrokes! ZERO! As a matter of fact, it creates keystrokes because if you check to see if a function was recent and it WASN'T then you have to keep hitting the back key to get to the main menu. It would add at least 2 keystrokes. This was not well thought out. If the firmware ever was to be upgraded (my money says it won't EVER be upgraded) this is what I would change first.
So, overall, I like the phone. I don't make a lot of phone calls on my phone. Even if I did, the KIN works ok. As a texter, it's pretty well below average. Usable but far from ideal. But as a device to have in your pocket that does lots of different things, even if it doesn't do some of them very well... I'd do it again. I can't help but like this phone. I'm keeping it!

Hi KinUser.  I also just switched from a Voyager to the Kin TwoM.  I find the Kin Two
fits very comfortably in my hand BUT...I don't think it's easy to slide open because of the slippery
plastics they used and no texture anywhere on the phone.  In comparison, the Cosmos Touch slides open VERY
easily because they used a nice rubberized plastic.  The solution to that though on the Kin, is a case (not
to mention the protection the case gives if you're like me and drop your phone quite often).
I have the Body Glove case on my Kin now, and the phone super easy to open with the Body Glove case because
the case is a nice texturized material. I took the case off after using it for a few days, and the Kin felt
even more slippery and hard to open after getting used to the feel of the case.
You might also find the case makes the phone feel better in your hands.   It wasn't well thought out
when they chose the materials for the Kin.
I've had my Kin for exactly a week now, and like you KinUser,
I feel the pluses greatly outweigh the annoyances. I find it almost impossible to find a phone that
isn't lacking in in some area. For instance, I love the size of the Cosmos Touch.  It's NICE and SMALL
compared to the Kin which is kind of bulky especially with a case...BUT... my main reason for not buying the
Cosmos Touch is the keyboard. They chose light blue letters on a silver background, and you have to hold
the phone different angles under certain lights to be able to see the letters on the keys well.  Now why on earth
they chose that color combo for the keyboard is beyond me.  Also, with the Cosmos Touch, the Keys are rather crowded.
I was playing with it in the Verizon store, and I was constantly mistyping words, which I rarely do on the Kin.
The Kins keyboard is easy to read, with nicely spaced out keys that are easy to hit without accidentally hitting the
key next to the one you want.  I also love that they put such a nice big space bar, like on a real computer keyboard.
The only think they could have done better with the keyboard on the Kin, is to add a 4th row for numbers instead
of having to use the function key, but then that would have made the phone larger or they would have had to crowd the
keys. Guess you can't have it all. You don't realize how often you use numbers until you have to use the
function key.  But I find that a minor annoyance, and it's something I'm getting used to.  I do like the emoticon
key.  I do know that the touch screen on my Voyager became useless after the phone aged, so I don't care that
I can't type on the front of the Kin.  I HATED trying to type on the front of my voyager.  I even hated having
to dial a phone number on the front of the Voyager.  The Kin put a nice BIG dialer on the touch screen so you don't
accidentally hit the wrong phone number when you have to manually dial a number.
KeepOnSingn...thanks for the tip of holding the key down to get to the home screen.  I hadn't stumbled across that
yet and haven't read the entire 100+ page manual.   I was wishing for a way to go all the way back to the home screen.
As for some other things I love about the Kin..   Some people do not like the home screen on this phone and say
it's messy and cluttered.  I LOVE how you don't have to go through several menus to get to something like in a lot of
phones including the voyager.  Almost everything is accessible from the home screen. And yes, all of the
"Apps" are on the home screen with no spaces between anything, but I like it like that because you have a much larger
area for your finger when opening an app. And they chose icons that are easy to recognize, which isn't the case
on all phones.   I have to say my favorite unexpected feature is the "favorites" contacts page
and how you can put photos of the people you text and call most.   Instead of hunting for a name, it's so easy to choose
the contact when you see their photo on the page, and I love how their photo pops up with a bubble when they text you.
Might be the kid in me, but I find it really neat.   if you're busy and you see a photo of someone pop up and you
know it can way till later, you don't even have to read the text.
I can deal with the minor annoyances.  I thought I could care less about not being able to forward texts, but
I realize now, how often I do that. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe there's a way to text multiple people.
My son is having surgery next week and I had to type the same text to 5 different people yesterday.  Annoying,
but hey...I can deal with that too. They should have included a way to increase the size of the text in emails using the
pinch move like you can do on a website on this phone. The text is TINY in emails and also TINY in texts, especially
looking at the previous threaded texts.  Why did they not think of allowing you to change the size of the font on
the phone. In comparison, the text on the Octane is so much easier to read.  I'm not sure though why on any phone,
they don't include all of the normal features that are found on most cell phones that people have come to expect.
They got so much right on this phone...while missing some of the really basic things...like a notepad which I used to
use constantly.  Not being able to upload contacts and entering them manually was a pain, but not the end of the world,
but what concerns me, is not being able to back up everything on the phone.  I have spent a LOT of time setting this phone
up with contact photos, email address,IM screen names, birthdays, etc.  If the phone dies and I need
a replacement, I'm going to have to set it all up again??!!!  I dread that.  I'm hoping BitPim adds support so I can
back it up that way, which is how I backed up contacts, my calendar, notepad etc on my Voyager.
I think there is a learning curve with the Kin and you really need to give it a good chance.  I went back and forth
MANY times regarding keeping this phone or trading it in, but now after using it for a full week, I am 98% sure I'm
keeping it.  The free WiFi, the 8mp camera, the HD Video, the Zune player, all outweight the few annoyances, and make it a
winner for me over the other Feature phones.

  • Kin one or kin two can't decide?

    Hi
I am getting the kin one or two phone
but I can't decide which one to get.
I been watching reviews on both of them
I think I want the kin two but with the kin two do  u need a zune pass
can you use itunes instead or get music from itunes onto the phone?
    That's my major problem
    Thanks

With either phone you do not need the zune pass subscription, however, you will need to download the zune software(free) on your computer and transfer your songs from itunes to zune, and then, to your KIN. As for which one to choose, I love the design of the kin onem, but the features on the kin twom are a little more high end so I personally chose the two. It has an 8 mp camera versus 5, records hd video, and has stereo sound. Also, it can store 8 gb of info versus the 4 the one can. Other than these differences, the phones are the same.

  • Kin two...piece of JUNK!!!

My husband upgraded a little over a year ago to the kintwo and we've had nothing but problems ever since!!! It constantly freezes and if it does freeze while recieving a text or a call that message is lost! The camera is great when it works. Because of these problems I gave my husband my upgrade because he uses his phone a lot for work and needs something thats reliable and I took this phone because mine was old and getting warn out now i can make and recieve calls but no one can hear me the battery will only charge to 10%  and its very slow!! Because my husband used my upgrade I'm out a phone and we still have to pay the bill I have an old alltel phone that I tried to hook up but now verizon won't connect those phones!!! And of course I can't even upgrade on my husbands line because its only been maybe a year and 4 months so we aren't due for an upgrade for at least 6 months!! What am I supposed to do Verizon....pay my bill even though I don't even get to use my phone? We've been with verizon for years and now your just going to screw us?....NICE!! Anyone looking to get a kin DON'T!! They are such a piece of crap they won't even last you til your next upgrade!!!!!!

        Hi, melam!
I apologize to learn of the concerns you are having with the Kin Two! I would be happy address the concerns regarding freezing with calls and messaging. Does this happen on each call and text, or specific contacts? Have you performed any resets on the device or reverted the phone back to factory settings? We do have options available to you, if you wish to get another device, but are not yet eligible to upgrade. Check out http://goo.gl/K0zsd for more details. Keep me posted.
    Thanks,

  • Kin two m- PLEASE REPLY WITH HELP IMMEDIATLEY!

I downloaded the Zune software on my computer for the KIN two phone. I downloaded and am using the free 14 day trial. I plugged my phone in with the USB cable, and dowloaded some music. Then i unplugged it, and all the pictures from my cell phone are on thE COMPUTER! and now all the pics on my phone are gone. I tried to download them back on to my phone, but it wont work. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a third theory concerning your difficulty with transferring pictures [back] onto your phone.
I observed a behavior about the Zune software and the Kin that I found a little exasperating.
I wanted to transfer some video clips through the Zune software to the Kin. As you can see in the photo provided by fisharefriends in the post dated "01-13-2011 11:39 PM" in this thread (link), in the lower-left corner of the screen [while using the Zune software] there is an icon of the phone. During this time, the screen of the Kin says that it is connected to the Zune and that to disconnect it from the Zune that you should swipe your finger.
After I had transferred a few videos, I wanted to evaluate right away their playback on the Kin and then resume transferring videos through the Zune to the Kin.
After I swiped the Kin's screen, I could use the phone in a normal manner. Since the Zune software was still running and since the Kin was still connected via USB cable, I was ready to transfer some more videos. But the icon of the phone was no longer in the lower-left corner of the screen of the Zune software -- therefore, the connection between the Zune and the Kin appeared to be severed. After attempting this and that, finally the only way I could think of to restore the connection was to unplug the USB cable and re-plug it. Voila! The connection was re-established.
But this was a pain-in-the-neck way to do things. So here's what I found out I could do if I wanted to temporarily sever the connection so that I could temporarily use the Kin in a normal manner ...
    - don't swipe the Kin screen to sever the connection; instead, close the Zune application but leave the USB cable plugged in
    - now you'll be able to use the Kin in a normal manner [such as to evaluate the files that you hope were successfully transferred]
    - when you're ready to re-establish the connection between the Zune and the Kin, re-launch the Zune software. It'll detect that there's a Kin [still] plugged in via USB cable, and the icon of the Kin will be in the lower-left corner of the screen of the Zune software.
So that's a long way of saying that during your attempt to transfer photos, even though the Zune software is presently running on your computer and even though the Kin is plugged in that maybe what the problem is is that the connection has been severed and you will need to unplug the usb cable for a few seconds and then plug it back in to re-establish the connection.

  • Is there a spot for a phone charm on kin two?

I looked at 360 pictures and everything and still can't tell if it has a spot for a cell phone charm. please help! i know that kin one has a spot for it, but i don't know about kin two. i really hope it does! i asked this question everywhere and they haven't answered yet. again, please help!!

I have found a spot that looks like you could be able to but when they designed the back cover of the phone they forgot about it. When you take the back off your phone there will be a spot on the cover that is shaped like a "T" and that is where you would drill if you wanted to. you could possibly take a drill or some thing to the back cover and make it work. But I decided to leave it alone on my phone because I have a case and I don't want to mess my my case. I hoped this helped.

  • New Kin two won't sync to my computer?

My computer recognizes my Kin two phone but it asks for installation hardware which didn't come with the phone.  It then says it was unable to install the new hardware.  In which case, Active sync won't recognize my phone.  Anyone else have any problems syncing their phone?

Yes! It's kind of weird. The phone seems only to sync with ZUNE. If you go to MY COMPUTER even when it's synced to Zune you will not see the phone. As far as I can see you have to sync videos, music, photos and podcasts via Zune. At least Zune is free! And it works pretty well compared to Media Player.

  • Kin Two Battery Life

Just wondering if this is normal. I just got the Kin two and have to charge it every night. I just text and talk. I have not even used the camera within the past day or the video/ wi fi- nothing. The battery takes 4 hours to charge. Is that normal? should i turn my phone off to charge it? or can i leave it on ?

My battery usually  lasts about 2 days with heavy use and wifi on all the time.  If I keep it off and don't do much talking  and maybe a few text messages then about 3 1/2.  With wifi on at home and and heavy web use, then about 2 3/4 days.
As for battery charging, I'm not sure how long. I just charge it over night or plug it in in the morning and let it charge. I haven't really paid much attention to how long it charges.
Though I was told by Verizon (though how reliable they have been with knowledge recently, I'm not sure how good this information is.) that you can charge it every day even if it doesn't need to charge or if you need it before it's done charging that it won't hurt the battery. Apparently batteries these days don't carry a memory anymore so you don't have to charge them for 24 hours when you get it, you can charge it or use it until the battery dies etc.
If you think something is up with your battery take it into Verizon and they can check the battery.  The one good thing they are good for is if your battery is bad or even if you think your battery is bad, they will give you a new one. Heck when I had the Intensity II and had bad battery they were ready to give me a new phone all together not just a new battery.  So go in and they can check it out for you.

  • Is there any way to retrieve deleted texts messages from KIN TWO M?

is there any way to retrieve deleted texts messages on KIN TWO M?

Unfortunately, no, not unless you had them backed up somewhere (like with bitpim software).  Once the texts are deleted from the phone, they're gone.

  • My Kin Two

soooo i just recently bought a Kin Two Sharp off of ebay and it wants me to set it up on start up but when i try to enter my email address it says
    CONNECTION PROBLEM:
"Can't reach the Windows Live ID service right now. If you cancel setup, you'll have limited use of your phone. Setup will continue the next time you turn on your phone."
I have tried multiple emails and i used my windows live zune hotmail and xbox live emails and NONE of them work i have 3G and i can easily connect to the internet on my phone and even go to Windows Live.com but it just wont let me set my phone up all the way and i CANT even go to Kin.com because the website is shut down i dont kno what to do pleaseeeeeeee HELP.!!!!

        Hello!
I'm sorry that you are having problems connecting. We need to get this fixed! Are you connected to WiFi when this happens? I would recommend trying a master reset.
    MasterReset
    Tap Settings
    Tap About Your phone
    Tap Erase Phone Data
Tap to erase all your personal data from the phone. This is a drastic measure as it erases all your sign-in information, settings, contacts, favorites, photos, videos, music, and
messages from your phone. You will be asked to confirm.
Let us know if that helps!

  • Speeding up turn-on of KIN two-M

Does anyone know how to delete all the teenage photos that come on when you turn on the Kin Two-m? It just takes too long for the thing to boot up ... and I'm not 13, so the silliness of the photo array is, well, silly......

I was also hoping there was a way to get rid of all those goofy photos when powering up or down.  Who are these people anyway???

  • Kin Two contacts search disabled

Can someone please tell me why I can't search my contacts any more? Every time I go in to do it,  my Kin just sits there with the search word, doing nothing. Is this a setting change?

No, it's not a setting change that I'm aware of. Whether you have the Kin Two or the Kin Two M, you can access from any Home screen by typing a contact name to open the "Search" box or you can press the "SEARCH" key on your keyboard. Is this your process?

  • Kin Two Music library..

A first troubleshooting step would be to uninstall and reinstall your Zune software to ensure the software has not been corrupted as this may cause your sync to fail.

  • Kin Two software

Are there any KIN Two software upgrades? Thanks!

Hi sandi72276! Thanks for inquiring about pending updates to the KIN TWO operating system. At this time, we have no word of any pending changes to the software on your phone. If you have other reasons to inquire about the function of your KIN TWO, I am available to  you. Have a great day!

  • Any games for Kin Two ?

I just received my Kin Two phone today and while I like it, it has NO preloaded games and I can't seem to find any games for this phone, however, Customer Support tells me there ARE games you can download for this phone.  Does anyone know what games you CAN download for it ?  OR is there a website that you can download games for the phone ?  Ready to return it if there isn't =(  Thanks for any info =)

Sorry, you were misinformed. There are no games for the Kin. Another short-coming of Microsoft, who designed the phone to be targeted at the teenage and young adult audience, and didn't even include games (among everything else they got wrong, when the phone was a smartphone and even when the firmware was re-written as a feature phone). They truly have a failing marketing department and should take a lesson from apple or google. Or even Verizon! apart from their decision to force data plans on the phone that was targeted for the younger audience..like they expected parents to afford/consider data plans, or for the Kin even to compete with the iPhone, Blackberries, or Android phones, and i guess even these days, the windows phones.
But rants aside, i'm sorry it is a deciding factor for you to return it, but i hope you find a phone that you will be satisfied with.
