KT4V (MS-6712) power suppy

I'am running a XP 2400 Througbreed with 160 GB master and a 30 GB as slave. Two CD burners, one floppy drive,120 superdisk drive and four case fans on KT4V(MS-6712).
I've install a 550 power supply and the motherboad wasn't getting any power except for the on board lan lights. So I returned it and he tested and it was good. So we lowered it to a 400 power supply and it work.
Does anyone know what's the maximuim  power supply the motherboard can take? Would like to go as high as possible for future up grades, without any side affects.
"Thank You" for your time. ?(

  • KT4V (MS-6712) hangs on "Checking NVRAM.."

    Hi All.  I am using a KT4V (MS-6712) with an Ath.XP 2.1GHz and one PNY 512MB 333MHz DDR.
The PC has been working perfectly since I purchased the KT4V three weeks ago.  (by the way I am *so* impressed with this MSI MB - my first MSI!)
Now, on power-up POST hangs at "Checking NVRAM.."
If RESET is pressed, machine boots through POST normally and runs perfectly again.
I'm concerned the NVRAM error may be signs of bad things to come - can someone suggest where to start diagnosing the problem?  Test RAM throughoutly with some utility, etc.
    Thanks,

Thanks to everyone who responded; I reset CMOS and that seems to have solved the problem.  I hope every BIOS update won't cause the same problem! :-)
    Thanks again

  • KT4v MS-6712 problems

    Hello,
I have a KT4v MS-6712 mainboard and I have lately experienced som problems with it.
I first thought it was the power supply that was broken because absolutley nothing happened when I tried to turn on the computer. Not even the diods at the network connection was light up. I replaced the power supply with a new one and now the computer gets power (the diods are light up), but nothing still happens when I try to start up the computer.
So my question is, are there any way to configure the mainboard in a way that makes the computer start as soon as I switch on the power supply (instead of using the power switch connection on the JFP1 front panel connection)? I want to make sure that it is not just the front panel that is broken.
I would really apprieciate your help!

Do all or any fans start up?
Take the motherboard out, for a good visual - bad capacitators? - and for a test-run outside the case. Around the memory slots and the processor socket is where trouble mostly is found.
I hope it is as simple as a cable on the loose.

  • Onboard NIC, KT4V MS-6712

    Hi there,
When i try to connect to the internet with the onboard nic of my KT4V MS-6712 i get the error message "one of the networkcables is not connected".
With an sepperate nic i don't have any problems.
Is there some setting i did forget?
Nic is already enabled in the bios !
I have 3 machines behind an Edimax router with a cable connection.
    System specs:
    KT4V MS-6712
    AMD AthlonXP 1600+
    TwinMos 256Mb PC2100
    Hercules 3D Prophet 128Mb
    Creative Live! 5.1
    Maxtor 60Gb 7200rpm
    Q-Tec PSU 550 watt
    OS Win XP pro

I have the same problem on my ms-6712, the onboard LAN doesn't seem to work correctly, if I connect the network cable to the onboard LAN the lights flash on the modem and the board but I can't get an IP address for the LAN. Although it works fine on my PCI NIC. Very strange!
I've tried, in a desperate attempt, to use a cross over cable but that didn't work either. Although it shouldn't work with a cross over cable anyway.
If anyone has an answer for this one I'd sure like to know!

  • KT4V MS-6712 Odd sounds

Got this mobo a few weeks back now, everything seemed to be running fine.  Decided to change the heatsink/fan for something less noisey.
Now I have noticed a noise !!  Sounds like a off centre fan ! Checked all the fans in the system, nope they are all fine.  Then realised the noise only happens when I move the mouse(usb) or hotsync my palm(usb) or use the keyboard(ps2) !
The noise is not coming from the soundcard, it appears to from the mobo itself !
Anyone come across this before ?

  • KT4V MS-6712 Modem Install Problem

    Hi everyone,
I've just got a KT4V(MS-6712) board and finally got it to work with the 2400XP and 2xPC700 256mb RAM.  (It woudn't take a 512mb stick).
My problem is I cannot install my v92 or v90 modem.  When I go through the usual procedure in the Hardware Wizard, I get an "Error occurred" message at the very end of the installation in the wizard.
I've tried the modems in another motherboard using the same procedure of installation and everything works fine. I've also installed a TV card in the PCI slot to see if there was a problem with the slots, but it installed ok.
Could some please guide me in the right direction?  I'm I missing somthing here, a BIOS setting or something?  Could it be a serial conflict?
    Thanks in advance, mrnickyp

Thank you to all who helped me through these strange issues. I found out what the issue was. These are the steps: (this is off another newsgroup)
This applies to any type of PCI card eg ethernet cards, modems, etc
etc. and XP and Windows 2000.
PROBLEM: After installing new card in a PCI slot, get "invalid data"
error message and the drivers refuse to install. The card is
correctly identified by the system and the drivers found are MS
certified. Not sure why this happens, but at a guess, this problem
seems to occur when installing XP or W2K and many PCI slots are still
unused. XP and W2K for some dumb reason then appear to "protect" these
unused PCI slots by making them "READ ONLY" in the registry.
SOLUTION: After mucking around for many hours trying to reset bios
settings for PCI cards, trying to re-install XP etc, finally came
accross the solution. Thanks to MarkS whoever he is for finding this.
STEP 1 - Start, Run... and type "regedt32" without the quotes to run
the Registry Editor. (Regedit wont work!)
    STEP 2 - Navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI
STEP 3 - you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where
    xxxx are
strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of
    these
folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each
long numerical name folder and look in RHS window for the "DeviceDesc"
which matches the hardware you are trying to install.
STEP 4 - Once you have found the right one for your problem device,
navigate back up to the VENxxx level for that device, Right Click on
the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'Permissions'. You should
notice that the permissions are set to READ ONLY. Then tick "Allow"
    for "Full Control".
STEP 5 - Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your
device, ie go back to Control Panel, Add new hardware and preferable
use the wizard to try and detect the hardware again, or do it manually
    and use your driver disk.
STEP 6 - The PCI hardware should install now with no problems.
After downloading the latest drivers and installing that, the sound card worked successfully. Oh, and lynux, I believe you are correct, the pci input device was for the firewire.
This worked for me, now I just need to ensure that the USB bracket works. (any more ideas?)
-> addition: USB works. Tried it and everything was detected right away...
again... thanks so much for everyone's help.

  • AMD-XP 2600+ and MSI KT4V MS-6712 MB

Can somebody help me pls? I do have a MSI KT4V MS-6712 Motherboard and an AMD Athlon XP 2600 processor. According the CPU RATIO settings table I should put the ratio 16 and the FSB on 133, but I don't have a 16. I only have a 15 and if I use the 15 instead of the 16 I do get a performance of 733 Mhz. When I use the 12.5/13 the system says it's a XP-2000+, but I'm still missing some Mhz. I did already upgrade the BIOS to version 1.8 but no results.
Pls help me, I'm getting crazy! ;(

I changed it into 166 Mhz and now it's acting as a XP 2600+.
Rob, thanks for your suggestion and help in this matter.

  • KT4V MS-6712

Hi I just bought a KT4V series mb(MS-6712) when I tried to install Windows XP Professional it keeps telling me the board does not support ACPI and will not install. Can someone help me please?

    Perhaps this is the answer....
The Role of the F5 Key and Shutdown Problems
When I first put this page together I meant to include this information. Unfortunately it totally slipped my mind. One of the hazards of being an Elder(ly) Geek, but better late than never. Thanks to reader Glen M. for jogging my memory.
When XP is first installed it tries to determine what type of BIOS is available on the computer. Newer systems have what is known as Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) capability. Unfortunately, XP doesn't always recognize a computer BIOS is ACPI capable and doesn't install the support for ACPI. Even more unfortunate is the fact that if ACPI support isn't determined at the initial install it's virtually impossible to correct this at a later time short of reinstalling XP over the top of the previous XP installation. To do so requires changing the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). The chances of successfully changing a HAL after XP has been installed is pretty close to zilch.
Once you drop the CD in the tray and fire up the computer to install XP, the first thing you'll see at the bottom of the screen is the option to press F6 if you need to install a SCSI or RAID controller. Don't press F6. Press F5 instead. This will take you to a separate menu of Hardware Abstraction Layer's where you can choose an appropriate HAL that supports ACPI. The choices will be:
    ACPI Multiprocessor PC
    ACPI Uniprocessor PC
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
Compaq SystemPro Multiprocessor or 100% Compatible PC
    MPS Uniprocessor PC
    MPS Multiprocessor PC
    Standard PC
    Standard PC with C-Step i486
    Other
In the majority of installations the 'Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC' HAL is the one you will want to use. A few cautions are also in order:
Obtain and install the latest BIOS for your motherboard before you begin the XP installation.
Equally as important as using the proper HAL on ACPI capable systems, is NOT using it on systems that are not ACPI compatible. The install may complete but the system will almost surely fail to start when it reboots.
There are situations where it is definitely not desirable to use an ACPI HAL even if it is supported by the BIOS. This predominately applies to servers, but to insure that an ACPI HAL will not be used or automatically detected and used, press F7 instead of F5 as discussed previously.
Considering the number of problems that users have with systems not shutting down completely I wonder why this feature is not prominently mentioned and documented. It could save many headaches, but now you know. A good piece of knowledge to have tucked away for your next XP install.
As a final note, to determine if your computer was detected as being ACPI enabled:
Right click My Computer then click Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.
    Expand the entry called Computer.
If the entry is 'Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC' you're all set. If it says 'Standard PC' the computer BIOS was not detected as being ACPI capable.

  • KT4V (MS-6712) Keyboard error

    Hi everybody,
I just experienced a really strange problem with the KT4V mainboards....
The problem is the keyboard seems to have a conflict with mainboard resources under win2000 and winXP (but not using win98!??!)
But U dont find any Yellow question marks under System/Hardware/Device Manager/Keyboard, just two red signals going in the under System/Hardware/Device Manager/Keyboard and then to the resources tab used by the keyboard.
The message says there's a conflict with motherboard reserved resources using i/o port 60 and i/o port 64.
All the pcs use different processors, keyboards, vga cards and other periphals.
The only thing they have in common is the mainboard...
I tried to disable usb ports, to change a few bios settings but nothing happened!
The very strang thing is on the same pc using dual boot, under win2000 the red signals are there while under win98 no conflicts were found.
So I guess there must be something wrong on via drivers (or maybe ac97 audio or usb drivers) or win2k resources allocation...
    Could u please help me?
PS: Please forgive my poor english...

  • Kt4v (ms-6712) agp volt problems

Hi, i have an problem with my kt4v and my ati9800 pro. When i play games who need lots of power (pixel shader2 ect) like farcry. Ati's vpu recovery kicks in about 30 minuts and either it will fix it or i need to reboot when it fixes it the first time the next crash will take place again about 30 min later. I did a lot of rechearch about this problem and i think the solution is to increase the agp voltage to 1.6 or 1.7 but my pc wil lockup after 2 minutes when i put it on 1.6 and when i set it to 1.7 it will boot but i cant see my mouse and get all kind of glichtes.
I already bought a new power supply (420 watt) my power stream is according to pc health: [email protected] - [email protected] - [email protected] - [email protected] there all dropping and resing slithly all the time.
Any one know a fix?? i would be very gratefull

That seems to be a common occurance with this board and ATI video cards, actually many boards and AGP 8X video cards. It seems the AGP 8X spec is still not fully optimised, or is still in need of refining. The good news is, there is less than 1% difference in performance between 4X & 8X. The AGP bus is pretty much capped at 4X, and 8X just cannot deliver a noticable improvement. I seriously doubt there will ever be a fix for this situation, as PCI Express is the direction all newer motherboards and video cards are taking to improve performance.
I think the problem lies in the lower voltage for 8X, as the frequency is raised, the voltage has to be lowered to reduce heat buildup, and the lower voltage just cannot run the video in a stabil manner.

  • KT4V MS-6712 and Maxtor 120GB problemsPLEASEHELP!!!!!!!!!!

I seem to have a hell of a problem on my hands and I can't figure it out for the life of me.
    I have a MS-6712 mobo
    Wester Digital 20GB HD ATA/133
    Maxtor 120GB UDMA ATA/133
    256 MB RAM
    MSI Geforce4 TI4800SE 8X AGP graphics card
My system was working just fine for about a year now, and so I decided to add a new HD to the mix for additional storage. I got the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 Ultra 120GB ATA/133 drive, installed it into my system, everything went fine for the first couple days. It is formatted in NTFS format, my WD drive is Fat32. All of a sudden anytime I tried to copy files over to the Maxtor drive it was horribly slow and ultimatly would make the system freeze very quickly. I know about having to power on and off the system 10 times before the drive runs at full speed(per MAxtor's instructions). AFter I did this, it still would not run fast, and ultimatly started to crash my computer any random time, no matter if I was d/ling to my other drive, to the Maxtor drive, and sometimes would not even start up all the way. At first I thought it was an NTFS issue, but I am quickly thinking that that is not the case. I've reinstalled XP SP1 over 10 times now, updated every driver I possibly can, and still nothing helps. I know it is the Maxtor drive because without it, my system runs without a hitch. Ive tried the Maxtor on another computer setup and it worked flawlessly, so I know that it is good. Is ther anything I'm overlooking in order to get my motherbooard to work with my new Maxtor? Anyone else having similar problems? Any suggestions as to a solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am about to give up on the drive out of frustration, but I want to give it another shot before I do. Thanks a lot, and if you need any more info, please let me know.
    --------->Musashi

Hi guys, thanks for the replies....I have a few updates...first I took back the Maxtor drive and got a Western Digital 120 GB drive instead. Installed it, everything worked fine, except for whenever I played intensive games like Doom3 or Tribes Vengeance, sometimes it would hang on a frame for a second or two, and other times it would crash and leave a horrible high pitched sound coming out of my speakers. I have been trying to find the culprite to this problem ever since. I have updated every driver I have. I thought it might be a sound problem so I uninstalled my Sound Blaster Live 5.1, but didn't seem to do the trick. I then saw that I had version 1.1 of my bios, and that it was all the way up to version 1.9....so I promptly tried to flash the bios. I did that and at first it worked fine, but then all hell broke loose as it started to crash every windows booted up. I tried using the bios rescue utility, but of coarse it didn't do . so now I have again formatted and installed win XP on my main 20GB WD, now have the same god damn problem I had with the Maxtor, everytime I access either IDE drive, the system stutters, and half the time crashes. I just don't get it, I don't see how I could have trashed the new WD drive as well, it just doesn't make any sense. and I can't seem to find any setting in the BIOS that is different than what my original configuration was before I updated the BIOS. Anyone have any suggestions, because this is just getting ridiculous. Thanks  a lot!

  • KT4V MS-6712 ver. 2.0

Hi!! Yesterday I bought a new motherboard KT4V! It turned out that the bios version was 3.0!!!! What the f***? The latest Bios version on Msi Bios page is 1.8! The picture also isn't similar to my motherboard. But I'm sure that my motherboard is KT4V because in the manual there is a picture of the mothrboard and it is the same! So where is the webpage of this (new) motherboard????
    Please Help

On the motherboard sayis I have MS-6712 Ver: 2.0. I scaned the picture of the manual for you, but I don't know how to post it. The problem is that I cannot run my Athlon XP200+ (T-bred) on it. It always crashes! I tried the CPU on the old KT4V v1.8 and it works. This motherboard also has some jumpers to set the CPU frequency. Only the first page of the manual is the same as my motherboard, everithing else is simmilar to old KT4V, even BIOS!! Bios is very simmilar to the one one the old KT4V, just the FSB frequency setting is different. Now I messed up everithing because I updated the BIOS on the new motherboard to 1.8. Is it possible to go back to previus ver of BIOS? Does the seller have the new BIOS for Ver: 2.0 and above?
