Ktadmin error - anyone know the cause?

I'm working on supporting Open Directory Kerberos authentication from a Java application. As a part of kerberizing the service the service principal has to be added to Open Directory and a keytab file needs to be exported, using kadmin.
I'm perplexed by the following error on one Open Directory / Mac OS X Server instance I have running, when I try to run sudo kadmin:
"kadmin: Missing parameters in krb5.conf required for kadmin client while initializing kadmin interface."
This is a fairly new (and mostly unused) server and there is no /etc/krb5.conf file at all. In earlier testing on a different Leopard server machine, these commands worked; I checked and the machine where it works also doesn't have an /etc/krb5.conf file by default. I didn't find any differences in Open Directory settings apart from the
Why might this error occur on one Leopard Server and not another?

Thanks, this was indeed the problem, so in writing up instructions I'll explicitly say use kadmin.local.
For curiosity I'm still interested in the root cause; there must still be some difference between the two servers because kadmin works on one while kadmin.local is required on the other.
A long shot - could SMB and acting as a Windows PDC have anything to do with it? That's the only difference I could find - the second server (the one that forces me to use kadmin.local) has SMB running and is a Windows PDC (though no Windows clients are actually bound to it currently).
There are examples in the 10.5 Server Command Line Administration guide of using kadmin (not kadmin.local) on the KDC machine. From page 264:
To kerberize a service (from a terminal *+running on that host+*):
1 To create the service principal, use kadmin.
$ sudo kadmin -p admin_principal -q “addprinc -randkey service-principal”
2 Import the principal key into the keytab file.
$ sudo kadmin -p admin_principal -q “ktadd service-principal”
3 Configure the service to use the new principal.
This step is service-specific. For information about how to perform this step, see the service documentation.
The man page says "the difference is that kadmin.local runs on the master KDC if the database is db2 and does not use Kerberos to authenticate to the database." I don't read this as indicating that kadmin shouldn't work on the KDC host.
The particular warning about a krb5.conf file indicates to me that the problem isn't in using kadmin but in some subtle configuration difference. Perhaps there's a setting somewhere to control whether or not kadmin is enabled and/or itself capable for kerberos authentication? As mentioned, neither server has an /etc/krb5.conf file.
(FWIW I installed and set up the server that works with kadmin, while IT set up the one that requires kadmin.local - no word from them on anything they did differently, apart from the SMB service and PDC status).

does anyone know the cause of iPhone error -1 ?

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694#error1. In other words, one of these 3 is the likely cause:
    1. Your antivirus of firewall is blocking the update
    2. Your phone is jailbroken
    3. You have a hardware problem

My iMac (running Lion 10.7.3) is connected wirelessly to a Laserjet 2550.  This has operated fine for a long time, but now the printer cannot be found when Time Machine back ups are taking place - Bonjour does not show any devices being available when Time Machine is running.  Does anyone know the cause & remedy please?

Your points match mine pretty well, though here are some thoughts:
    1. I thought about this theory myself this morning (iTunes possibly causing more issues), but I haven't been able to verify it.
    2. When I set up a new user it seemed better for a while, but the issue croppped back up. Yesterday I fully wiped the machine and reinstalled from scratch. I did not reimport my user from TimeMachine, but the problem has come back. My thinking was that I might have some really old software or prefs hanging around causing the issue. No dice.
    3. This is my current theory of the issue, so my next step will be to pull the RAM from Crucial and see how the system behves. IF that doesn't eliminate the problem, I'll pull the factory installed RAM and replace it with the 3rd party RAM. The odd thing is how many people seem to have similar issues - I know two personally, and have seen several posts on forums. I think the most common point for this happening was the 10.7.2 update, which would point to software as the culprit.
    4. That matches my experience.
My hope is that this will be repaired in the forthcoming 10.7.3 release (current production version is 10.7.2), but otuside of what I noted above, I'm at a loss.

When trying to install io5 on my iphone4 I get an error message during the updtae that there is a problem with backup and if I continue with the update, all the data will be deleted from my phone. I cancelled the update and my phone is fne. Has anyone else experience this? What is the cause/solution?
    Yhanks!

DON'T DO IT! Read the threads ... there is a MAJOR problem with updating iPhones 3GS/4 to iOS 5.
Take it to the Apple store and ask them to do it.
I repeat: DON'T DO IT YOURSELF.

  • Following the most recent IOS IPhone update our Iphone calendars, contacts and messages have all merged. This problem has never happened before. We all use the same Itunes account as a family and one AppleID. Does anyone know the cause of this problem?

We have 4 Iphones. As a family we have happily shared the same ITunes account and one AppleID. After the most recent iPhone IOS update all our contacts and calendars have merged and we randomly receive some messages that one of us has sent to another contact.
    This is causing chaos.
    Can anyone help me with:
    1. Has anyone experienced a similar problem recently?
    2. The records to the individual phones have not been saved been saved separately. After this merging of all the data into one composite record, is there anyway to reverse the change and restore the phones to just their individual records?
    3. I guess that the cause may be the common AppleID. I have tried to create my own AppleID but my personal email address is already linked to the existing AppleID so I am blocked from setting up a separate AppleID in my own name. Does anyone know how I can get around this block?
    4. Would it be better to create a separate Apple ICloud address for each of us as well? How do I do this?
    Many thanks in anticipation,
    Peter

This is exactly what happens when sharing a single Apple ID for iCloud and iMessage.  Why would you expect any different?

  • Can someone tell me why the ligtht on my Apple TV IS FLASHING ALSO WHEN WATCHING MLB THE PLAY STOPS WHILE REBUFFERING ALOT ANYONE KNOW THE CAUSE

Can anyone tell me why the light on the Apple TV Devices light keeps flashing. Also why when I'm watching MLB the veido stops
    often and it rebuffers.
    Thanks

    Hey rochelle84,
Thanks for the question. The status light on the front of Apple TV indicates what is happening. If it is flashing continuously and quickly, it indicates that Apple TV is having problems:
    via page 27 of manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1607/en_US/apple_tv_3rd_gen_setup.pdf
If Apple TV isn’t responding, first make sure:
    - The cables between Apple TV and your TV are pushed all the way in.
    - The power cords for Apple TV and your TV are securely connected to a working
    power source.
    - Your TV is turned on and set to the correct input.
    - Apple TV is connected to your network. Choose Settings > General > Network,
and see if Apple TV has an IP address.
    - Your network and Internet connections are on and working properly.
If you still have trouble, try resetting your equipment by disconnecting Apple TV, your TV, your wireless networking equipment or base station, and your router from the power outlet. Wait 30 seconds, and then reconnect everything.
For additional troubleshooting steps, see the above resource (Chapter 4 for troubleshooting).
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • My macbook model 7.1 will not start up unless connected to power supply even when it is fully charged. Does anyone know the cause of this?

I have a 4 year old MacBook 7.1 that has worked wonderfully until today. I went to turn on my computer and it would not do so until it had been plugged into the power supply, and it was fully charged. Can anyone suggest what to do to fix this? DO I need to take it to an apple repair tech? Thanks

    Hello ssamaro13,
I definitely understand your concern with your battery not powering your MacBook when the power adapter is disconnected.  I found a couple of resources that I think might help with this.
The first thing I recommend is resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your MacBook:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find the full article here:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If your battery is still not powering the computer when disconnecting the power adapter, the next thing I recommend is troubleshooting your MagSafe adapter using the steps in this article:
    Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I checked for waiting downloads in the iTunes App (purple icon) on device. Sure enough, there was a stuck download. Deleting that item (swipe to delete) seems to have gotten downloads working again and (hopefully) banished the message.

  • Every so often when using safari my bookmarks disappear and then later the list shows up again.  Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

Every once in awhile while using safari my bookmarks list disappears.  Later it just shows up again.  Anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

I have had exactly the same problem now with two mini iPads.  Everything was tried; 1) restarting; 2) restoring factory settings etc.  NONE worked.  Eventually Apple agreed to replace it.  I have had the replacement now for two to three months and exactly the same thing is happening again. So off to Apple tomorrow to get another replacement.
I am quite a heavy user of the iPad so wonder if this is something to do with the fault.
It is so frustrating as sometimes reset works, and then after 10/20/30/40 minutes (you pick) it goes unstable again.

  • Hi I'm trying to download apps from the app store and i get an "Unknown error" anyone know why?

Hi I'm trying to download apps from the app store with my Macbook Pro and I get an "Unknown error", anyone know why?

    Ok... good.
Installing the OS X Lion Update 10.7.2 Client Combo  will hopefully fix this problem for you.
It's ok to install the combo even though you are already running v10.7.2
Make sure and restart your Mac after the combo is installed then try to download apps.

  • My early 2011 MBP 17 started showing a thin vertical red line one inch from the left edge of the screen. Does anyone know what causes this problem?

Does anyone know what causes a thin vertical red line on the display?

There is a problem with the display or the connection to the display.  Take it to an Apple store genius bar for a definitive diagnosis.  The diagnosis will be free, any repairs will not be free.
    Ciao.

  • Anyone know the ActiveSync size limit for Sending?

I noticed that I have quite a few Event ID 1008 Warnings on my Exchange server today.  All of them are exactly the same and are all for the same user.  They occur every 5-10 min.  So I have discovered through research that this is caused (at
least in this case) by a message being sent from the mobile device (iPhone in this case) that is to big.
I have run a test on my own device (Droid X) where I attempted to send a message with a 14MB attachment.  The exact error is logged at the same time as the other intial error.  This is easy enough to fix: you simply need to go to the
Outbox on the phone or device and delete the stuck message.
However, I am now currious where this limit is set and how to find the exact size limit.  Through searching no one seems to know, but the limit is deteremined somewhere between 5-10MB.  Also, it is not set in Exchange as others like to recommend.
My send connector message size is 50MB and there is no limit set on the ActiveSync policy.
Anyone know the answer to this?  Is it an Exchange setting or is it determined by the particular phone/tablet?\
    Thanks.
    Event 1008 for others reference:
An exception occurred and was handled by Exchange ActiveSync. This may have been caused by an outdated or corrupted Exchange ActiveSync device partnership. This can occur if a user tries to modify the same item from multiple computers. If this is the case,
Exchange ActiveSync will re-create the partnership with the device. Items will be updated at the next synchronization.

Looks like I found the probable location of this size limit.  Looking at the web.config file in the
ExchServer\ClientAccess\Sync folder there is an entry for "MaxDocumentDataSize".  THe value is currently set at 10240000:
    <add key="MaxDocumentDataSize" vaulue ="10240000">
So this is 9.75 MB or there about, which sounds about right.  I will try increasing this limit at some point to verify.
    Can anyone confirm this?
