Kwin crash

Hi,
I have a problem with Kwin crashing everytime i log in. I am using Nvidia propietary drivers on a single display.
This backtrace appears to be of no use.
This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in the crash.

Try Device Section in xorg.conf without any Options.
Works for me.

  • [SOLVED] kwin crash when using OpenGL mode after upgrading to 4.7

I have a Ideapad Y460 (Graphic: ATi Mobility Radeon 5650). Recent days I upgrade my KDE from 4.7RC (4.6.95) to 4.7 (4.7.00) and also Catalyst from 11.6 to 11.7.
    Update:
The problem has been solved. I used [kde-unsupported] source and kdebase-workspace package in that source contains OpenGL ES support while Catalyst doesn't support it. Thank @csslayer.
But when I use OpenGL mode, kwin crashed. I run
    kwin --replace
to start kwin, then the Desktop Effect shows:
OpenGL compositing (the default) has crashed KWin in the past.
This was most likely due to a driver bug.
If you think that you have meanwhile upgraded to a stable driver,
you can reset this protection but be aware that this might result in an immediate crash!
Alternatively, you might want to use the XRender backend instead.
And there is a re-enable button. But the systemsettings window crashed when I pushed it.
I checked ~/.xsessiong-error and it shows this:
X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3
    Major opcode: 20 (X_GetProperty)
    Resource id: 0x1c0015a
I downgrade Catalyst but the problem still exists while KDE4.7 RC run well on my laptop. So I'm not sure whether it is caused by kwin or by Catalyst 11.7 or other packages.
Does anyone know the solution? Thanks for your patience.

I found an solution. Go to Settings/Mail, Contact, Calendar/Fetch new data and than enable Push and choose to fetch hourly or every 30 minutes. In this case your iPad will stay connected to wifi even when smart cover is closed. If you select Manualy than wifi connection will be terminated when in sleep mode.

To remove the bug "Konsole crash", I updated nvidia drivers to 275.09.07.
Now, Kwin crashes with : Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Segmentation fault.
No problem when desktop effects are disabled.
Has anyone had the same problem?
    Thanx

  • Kwin crashing repeatedly in 4.5

Well this is ~3rd time this has happened.  Kwin just goes nuts and crashes repeatedly, then shows a popup saying it crashed repeatedly, please select another window manager.  It was a signal 7, so I checked /var/log/messages.log and found this:
    kernel: krunner[26249]: segfault at 7f4cb9d4e030 ip 00007f4cd2b4803c sp 00007fffb0135640 error 4 in libkdecore.so.5.5.0[7f4cd2925000+2a0000]
I went ahead and disabled blur since it's a new feature...hoping that's the reason this is happening.  I have functionality checks disabled as well.
Anyone else getting this?  System info:
    fully updated system, no [testing]
ATI Catalyst 10.8 fglrx with compositng enabled
let me know if any other pertinent system info is needed.

DStein wrote:Brand spanking new Asus UL20FT with Core i3-330 and what I think is an Intel 4500MHD.  This is also happening constantly to me whenever I even try to turn on compositing.  Then provided I do turn it on, any changes I make to the settings crash kwin when I hit Apply.  Funny that on my Toshiba NB205 (Atom/945) Knotify constantly crashes.  Oh well no eye candy for me (triple damage for me even since my main rig has the bad nvidia driver problem which is solved by turning off compositing).
Well I also have an ASUS UL30A-X4 laptop with an Intel 4500MHD chipset.  I'm able to get compositing working....let me check my settings and I'll get back with you...I'm pretty sure I just disabled functionality checks and the blur effect to get it working.
All right I just checked and I had functionality checks disabled and I still had blur enabled.  I then disabled blur, clicked apply, and kwin froze....so I killed it and ran startx.  Compositing is enabled by default still.
If you're still not getting compositing by default then I would enable the settings, disable functionality checks, then logout (with kdm disabled) to a tty.  Then startx.  Then press ctrl+alt+F1 and see if you get any errors or messages that tell you anything.
If compositing is being disabled due to failing functionality check then it will leave a message.
This update is a bad one IMO....I may go back to 4.5 on my desktop.

and that's the strange thing, KWin seems to work under xfce but not under kde. I tried to move ~/.kde to ~/.kde.old and ~/.kde4 to ~/.kde4.old but it didn't to the trick either.
    Thanks

    Thanks, it worked!
I deleted the directory, and logged into KDE, I had a error window telling me the directory may be full or something, I decided to delete everything in the /var/tmp directory, I it worked. I logged in a default kde desktop. I logged out, switched back my /.kde.old and /.kde4.old, logged in in KDE and had the same error window with the directory full or somethin, deleted again everything in the /var/tmp and logged in my good old KDE desktop.
    Thanks a lot

  • KDE crash (and pannels disappear) after update

Just now I updated, and KDE was updated to 4.5.3-1. After that update, kwin crashed, and both desktop widgets and panels disappeared. I restarted X and that brought back the widgets, but not the panels... Which is very much annoying, because besides the default panel (the "taskbar"), I have another customized panel*, filled with links to the apps I use the most, and it is very cumbersome to rebuild it ...
The "fun" thing is, it turns out, that the the previous default panel was still present, although not visible, because after adding a new default panel, notifications started showing up twice. So I assume the same must have happened with the customized panel. But I was not able to get either of them back, so I created new ones...
Anyone else went through anything similar? Moreover, does anyone know how to create a "backup" of the contents of the customized panel, so as to minimize the hassle of creating a new one? (assuming such a thing is even possible)
    Thanks in advance.
    * It's an empty panel, to which I drag the apps links from the K-menu.

I don't have this kind of problem. But if I would to try and make a back up of my plasma settings I'd check plasma-desktop-appletsrc in ~/.kde4/share/config

  • [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects no longer working

    Hello,
I just did an update, (I didn't think it was a major one, I don't recall seeing graphics update, though I'm not sure how to confirm - is there a way to see recently updated packages in yaourt?) and after a brief issue with powertop that was solved by a restart (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179789 - it may be unrelated though) I found that when I restarted, KWin Crashed, and since then, my desktop effects are not working.
I have gone to the KDE Desktop Effects Settings Menu, and under the advanced menu, set the compositing type back to OpenGL 3.1, clicked apply, and confirmed that I wanted to try it even though it had evidently crashed Kwin. I then received a message stating "21 desktop effects could not be loaded". When I clicked details, a popup window said:
"For technical reasons it is not possible to determine all possible error causes.
Desktop effect system is not running."
For the record, I am on a Thinkpad X201 with intel graphics.
    Any ideas?

    Some Extra information:
I just tried a restart, that didn't work.
I then went back into effect settings, and saw that "enable effects at startup" was not checked. I also saw that under the advanced settings, Qt Graphics system was set to raster. Since I'm not sure which it was supposed to be on originally, but the current configuration wasn't working, I also set that to Native, and then clicked apply. KWin then crashed, here is the output:
    Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Aborted

  • [SOLVED] System breakage after recent update

    Hi.
After recent system updates with "pacman -Syu" various packages have broken.
For example chromium either crashes on start or does not load pages:
    ~ % chromium

Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/50-user.conf", line 9: reading configurations from ~/.fonts.conf is deprecated.

    Also kwrite crashes on start.
Also KDE plasma desktop does not start telling about KWin crashes.
Also Kile says "[PDFLaTeX] failed to start]" when I try to produce .pdf from .tex.

  • Support for debugging symbols

    Hi,
I'm using Kde but kwin crashes very often. I have submitted the bug to bugs.kde (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=150130) but I cannot manage to install debug symbols.
I have read the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Deb … ing_Traces), and after recompiling glibc all is the same.
    This is the trace:

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

This error is still occurring for the latest HP-UX JDK 1.5.0_05. I created a simple servlet that performed the following functions:
    1) Write output to PrintWriter from HttpServletResponse
    2) Overrirde the init() method for the servlet
    3) Set a System Property
    4) Open a client socket to a DMI Listener Port
It appears that items 1-3 completed properly, but the server crashed when opening a client socket from within a servlet container. This is now a highly visible issue that is preventing some of my company's customers from utilizing SunOne as a web server platform for our web interface. I am going to open a support issue with Sun support and see where things go from there. If anyone has any updated information, please post soon. Thanks,

  • [kde-unstable] KDE SC 4.10

    Hi all,
the first beta of the 4.10 series has been released.
As usual, you find the packages in the [kde-unstable] repo, which only contains beta/rc releases.
    Read install instruction from here.
    NOTE: It requires [testing] enabled.
kde-games has been split, two packages have been renamed
    - kdegames-libkdegames -> libkdegames
    - kdegames-libkmahjongg -> libkmahjongg
There're two soname bump; this is the list of the packages that you need to
    rebuild:
    libkipi.so.9 -> libkipi.so.10
    libkdcraw.so.21 -> libkdcraw.so.22
    - digikam
    - kipi-plugins
    - calligra-krita
    Also, there are:
    A new dependence: nepomuk-widgets
    A new game: kdegames-picmi
    A new print util: kdeutils-print-manager
    A new runner: kdeplasma-addons-runners-dictionary
A new set of wallpapers: kdeplasma-addons-wallpapers-qmlwallpapers
kdeadmin-system-config-printer-kde, kdeartwork-aurorae, kdeutils-printer-applet have been removed from the KDE SC.
Please report any packaging bug to our bug tracker.
KDE bugs go in the upstream bug tracker.
Have a nice update and testing!
See the list of known issues.

Hm, the "desktop widgets" locker isn't really thought through I think. You have to configure it like you would configure a standard plasma desktop, but it seems you can't resize the plasmoids and you have to do it without a window manager... So some text inputs like the city chooser from the weather plasmoid don't work. Also, the folder view for choosing the "dia show" folder is broken, half-transparent white until you right click on the correct spot.
If you forget to lock the widgets on your lock screen it is trivial for someone to find a file chooser and do arbitrarily evil stuff. Also, if any of the plasmoids allows to open a file chooser you loose to. Also, if you use the "dia show" background people just need to right click and they can open a folder view. Also, if you click switch user, the login mask just gets kind of flat and wide and is impossible to recover (I'm even using kdm!).
Killing plasma and kwin recovers your ability to unlock (+1 because even if plasma and kwin crashes the lock screen is still there) but with compositing kwin is at the moment seriously broken, won't let me switch windows correctly and moving windows kind of hangs. I think I need to restart X now...
Nice idea but for a beta it is pretty poorly implemented I think. Feels more like a concept demo.

  • From bad to worse - pacman doesn't respond

last night I installed wine and now arts (artsd) crashes at every start. I already had a problem with kwin crashing occasionally and now strangely ktip keeps popping up and although I tell it not to it's giving me great tips at every start.
allright, one thing at time: obviously I want to get rid of wine first but now pacman isn't responding to any commands and I have to kill it. OK, --version and --help respond but --refresh, --sync and obviously --remove don't.
It is a fresh install of arch 0.7 and pacman is 2.95. I've also tried running pacman before starting x.
    any thoughts?

I really don't know what happened, it looks worse than before.
    Here's all I can say:
    pacman-static didn't help
got pacman 2.9.6 and put pacman-optimize in /usr/bin and ran it
it backed up the dir /var/lib/pacman to /pacman.bak
ran pacman (not sure what, probably --remove wine) said /var/lib/pacman doesn't exist - duh!
ran --refresh - said it couldn't create db
rebooted and saw lots of read-only errors
ran pacman --refresh - can't create db
tried to rename /var/lib/pacman.bak to /pacman - write error
I mentioned in the orig post that after I installed wine, artsd crashes. Now I notice that when I open Konqueror, instead of the menu on the left (dir tree, favs, network, etc) I get an amarok menu! Is this because of arts?
what are the chances of solving this without a new install?

  • Kwin 4.2b w/ intel GMA 945 causes apps to crash all over the place

I am finding kwin 4.2b a total mess on my machine. Everytime I type something in a kde app, it crashes. Some programs like smplayer just crash when opened. Other larger gtk apps refuse to open.
I've tested this with and without desktop effects, across different kernels and xorg versions (I am currently on the latest from testing), different xorg.confs (and without xorg.conf) with the same results. Kde apps work completely as they should with any other window manager, so I can only conclude the problem is purely with kwin, although I never had it with 4.1. If I could get compiz to work in kde 4.2, this would solve the problem as well (I can't though).
I have removed the .kde folders to no avail as well.
Has anyone else had this problem? I am hesitant to file a bug report if no one else has experienced this as it might suggest a glitch somewhere in my own configuration files. I can't imagine what that might be, so if anyone has suggestions for that, I am all ears.
