Label on external volume suddenly in chinese

Just turned on the laptop after a few days away, and two of the volume labels appear in Chinese characters. I have an external WD USB drive with four volumes on it, I think one was for iTunes files, one was for Time Machine backup, etc. I see the external drive icon, and I see the four volumes - but two of them were displayed with Chinese characters instead of English. I clicked on one to see how deep the problem went, and the folders inside are also in Chinese. There were about ten folders and one file with a description of "Unix executable". I ejected both of those volumes immediately and checked the contents of the remaining two which all seem OK. But what is this? Did I get hacked - seems odd since the computer was off, but maybe I just didn't notice it as I haven't been at the machine much this past week so maybe it happened earlier, or maybe it happened when I booted up fresh today. How can I safely figure this out? I checked "File info" for the first drive, and didn't see anything obvious. Just all in Chinese.
Anyone ever seen this? I've searched every combination I can think of and just keep getting results for installing a machine in Chinese, not this mixed-language problem.
- PowerBook G4, yes I know it's old, waiting for new mini and working off external hard drive until I get the failed one inside here replaced.

I agree, FW was Apples best invention ever, I always boot my Macs from FW, even if the internal drives are faster because internal drives die & are so hard to replace on many Macs.
I gave up on TM long ago, the late great pondini had extensive coverages of most of it's failings, but even the great one was often stymied...

  • 10.5.5 sets external volume to read-only

    Bizarre.
I have 4 external volumes (2 FW800, 2 USB 2.0) and one of the volumes suddenly shifted to read-only status after updating to 10.5.5 this afternoon. At least, that's the error message I get when I try to touch a file anywhere on the volume.
Problem started when I tried to open iTunes and got the error message "The folder 'Music' is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." Get Info indicates that this user account does, in fact, have Read & Write permissions. Group and Other permissions are set to Read Only. Get Info does not allow me to select the lock to make changes, however, but nor is the "Locked" checkbox selected.
In Terminal, permissions for Volume "Little Brother" are indicated as:
    drwxrwxr-x 11 <adminuser> staff 442 Aug 13 13:11 Little Brother
The Music folder in question appears to have the appropriate permissions as well:
    drwxr-xr-x 14 <adminuser> staff 476 Sep 18 11:17 Music
Aside from the 10.5.5 update there have been no changes to the filesystem, and no files written to this drive.
I can touch files on each volume except for "Little Brother". Aside from chmodding the **** thing, does anyone have any recommendations for what I can do?
    Thanks.

I think Ill just keep responding to this, every time Apple issues an update (patch) that causes the problem to resurface. I have contacted tech support. And they tell me they no nothing about this and have never heard about it. Then I tell them to check my support records. The issue is well documented there and goes back for many, many months.
So, today I came home to find that apparently my software update utility (which is set to NOT update the software) has updated my software. My brand new Western Digital external 2TB disk is off line and my Time Machine drive (1.5TB Maxtor) now appears to be completely after being kicked from the USB ever friggin time there is a software patch.
I'm trying one last time to recover following the procedure above - but once again I am running the procedure above against my 2TB user disk - so hopefully in 8 or 12 hours Ill know something. Thanks again to all the Windows developers who are now obviously working at Apple.

  • Can Superduper and Time machine write to the same external volume.

I just setup a 750 GB external drive single partition using firewire 800. Any problem with superduper and time machine writing to the same volume?

Can Superduper and Time machine write to the same external volume.
Yes, they can write to the same partition.
I am doing this, and can report no problems so far. TM still backs up and SuperDuper is bootable.

  • Can I synchronize my iDevice with Aperture database on external volume?

    Hi everyone,
I'm a photography enthusiast and I would always take photos.
Recently, my built-in harddisk was full and I transferred my photos to an USB-connected 2.5" external harddisk. That's not the problem - I can browse and edit the photo freely whenever I plug in my external harddisk.
But when I tried to synchronize my iPad with a database on the external volume, the problem comes. iTunes told that it cannot find the aperture database (in local drive) and I have no idea to match it with my current database.
Who can give me a solution? Thanks!

(Sorry for my poor English as I'm not an English native speaker)

    Hi Ap Lei Chau,
    Your English is fine.
Though I do not have a iPad, I do have an iPhone. With my iPhone plugged in, open iTunes, under Devices click my phone, then Photos tab mine reads Aperture. Clicking that drop down I have a option to choose Folder. From there I can walk the path to an Aperture library.
It is my hope it appears the same in an iPad.
    Cordially,
    RicD

Try backing it up in iTunes, then restoring software. Back up first, though.
If problem is still there, then you may have to take this to a higher level. http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/

  • Sharing an external volume between 2 Macs

I have been having this problem since the first 10.5 install, and hoping it would get fixed w/ 10.5.2 but to no avail. Here is the short version -- I have 2 external volumes, one is a Time Machine drive and one is a media library - both on my iMac. I have a Macbook on the local network that can see the Time Machine Drive and other shared volumes (a pair of DMG images from the HD) w/out a problem. However, I can't get it to see a volume called "Video Library". Now, I have the iMac set up to do SMB sharing for a Windows PC. The Macbook sees the iMac as a native Mac, but also sees the iMac as a SMB share (mac001ba, etc.) So in the Finder Sidebar I have 2 listings for the iMac from the Macbook -- one as a Mac (w/ the custom icon), and one as the windows share. When I go to the windows share version, I can see that volume "Video Library", not just once but 4 times -- video library, video library-1, etc. and all are accessible, along w/ all other shares.
So, my question is - how do I get Leopard to "unstick" this volume and show it as a share. It is shared in "pref pane -> sharing", back to my mac is on, file sharing is on, I have permission to read&write on the volume, I am logged in as same user on both macs. Any thoughts?
As an aside, I did a clean install of leopard but this external drive carried over, I've struggled with the "unknown user" issue, and it still shows up when I share this volume, but I am at a loss. I am frustrated that Leopard is supposed to be so easy, and I've sort of patched this networking thing together 90% of the way, but I've got this one holdout volume that is obviously there but not being recognized by Leopard. ANY ideas?
    Thanks.

It is one external drive, split into two volumes (one Time Machine, one Video Library), connected via FW800 to the iMac. The Macbook can "see" the Time Machine volume fine and regularly backs up to it over the local network. Additionally, there are two other volumes (disk images set up from the primary internal hard drive) that the Macbook sees fine. I'm thinking my problem has more to do with the fact that there are 4 volumes listed as SMB sharepoints via the "windows" share version of the iMac, like something is getting duplicated. This may be impossible to solve, and an annoyance I have to live with, or perhaps I should wipe the volume and start over from backups, but I feel like as long as the name is the same I'm going to have the same problem. And I don't want to rename the volume because all of the media on the library is linked in iTunes and if I rename all of my links break.

  • System configuration & services data on boot disk or external volume?

Assuming a RAID 1 boot disk using 2 large capacity hard disks on a Xserve, which system configuration and services data shall one store on the boot disk and an external volume?
I am thinking of keeping DNS records and Open Directory data on the boot disk while mail store, web documents and user data in an external volume. What about database file such as MySQL?
What is the normal and/or best practice in this matter?

nope. doesn't matter a damm if you put the content on a secondary drive (as long as its plugged in when you want to use it!) ... the benefit of having it on a secondary drive would be to free up space on your system disc, if necessary (useful on a laptop, but means carrying around an extra portable drive for ths content) ... don't use your media drive though, better to save that for your projects captured/imported media only.
    cheers
    Andy

  • External volume on 5G Nano will not turn off

External volume always stays on, will not turn off on 5G iPod Nano, even when headphones are plugged in.
Went through the 5 R's (Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, Restore).  No change.
Could it be a defective volume control?

I had same problem - I reset options, etc.
FINALLY, after reviewing this discussion and going to the link as was suggested, I called Apple. The tech guy suggested making sure it was not on lock (on top) which it wasnt' and said to press Menu and Middle circle button (as opposed to Play/pause) at same time and apple logo should appear. It did, and then it unfroze and let me turn it off finally!!!
He thought problem occurs when you leave it on too long.
He suggested NOT to reset options else you'll lose your playlists (at least until you sinc up with your itunes.
    Hope this works!!

  • 5 minute hang on launch due to libary on external volume

    Hi,
I've seen this crop up a bit on some other posts, but I've noticed something that I hope someone can explain. Maybe it will actually indicate a solution.
I keep a large library on an AFP volume. If the the volume is mounted when I launch iTunes, iTunes hangs for several minutes before becoming operational.
However, if the disk is not mounted yet when I launch iTunes, things happen normally. Playing a song mounts the volume and things proceed smoothly.
This seems like iTunes is doing something to the large library on the external volume like indexing or checking or something? Is this a new feature in iTunes?
Thanks for any input. It would be nice to keep this volume mounted at all times.

i'm having the same exact problem. started another thread about it last week; however the fact that we haven't seen another update to fix these bugs makes me think apple doesn't consider these "bugs".

  • Time Machine plist file excluded external volumes

Mac OS 10.8, 10.9, Time Machine.
Posting here is my final step after a few hours of research. I am trying to find out whether Time Machine stores the names of excluded external volumes anywhere -- those volumes that one enters manually in the Time Machine exclusions options window. They are not in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. I have searched my Mac via "find" in Terminal as superuser and not found any other plist files that contain the name "timemachine" that contain this information, either. I've seen several apparently erroneous comments online that the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file contains this information, but in my own systems, at least, it does not.
Nor does the following command reveal this information:
    mdfind "com_apple_backup_excludeItem = 'com.apple.backupd'"
Pondini's excellent Time Machine resource states, with regard to the Time Machine GUI: "Excluded External Volumes (shown in black) are placed there automatically unless removed by the user, and do not appear in the plist."
My guess is that because Time Machine excludes external volumes by default, that it doesn't need a plist to store that information, and only cares about them if you delete them from the excludes list in the preferences window.
ADDITIONAL INFO: I am also aware of the com.apple.metadata:com_apple_backup_excludeItem metadata. I haven't been able to determine for certain what creates it, but my guess is Time Machine, at least as regards volumes.

Hi! I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to Mac OS, I have used True Crypt for a long time, you seem to know what you are talking about and I was just wondering if you have an easy answer for me, as I understand only 1/2 of what you wrote on your first post and other wise am lost.
I just want to know if TM works for my needs or if am doom to find another back up software.
I have a simple backup partition in my Mac Book and I store sensitive data in it, TM is backing up my computer now and that is fine, it also seems to back up my encrypted (with True Crypt) partition, but I read and read and read posts and now am confused and not sure if TM will actually back up the changes I do in the files inside the encrypted partition in my Mac Book. Or does it just back up the encrypted file without modifications inside?
If you could explain me this with an easy answer it would be fantastic! thank you!!

  • Time Machine Excluding External Volumes?

The following threads discuss backing up external volumes using Time Machine.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5316613?start=30&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16591548#16591548
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/6785149?searchText=Time%20Machine%20Exclud ing%20External%20Volumes#6785149
So apparently TM can backup external volumes but I have not been able to do so.
I've been experimenting with TM to backup external drives.  It will not backup my external drive, even when I remove it from the exclusion list.  It automatically re-added it to the exclusion list even though I explicitly removed it from that list.
    My test:
    - I plugged in a 1 GB thumb drive and formatted it as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
    - I put some new files on it with unique filenames for a test.
    - I told TM to run backups (several ones in sequence).
    - I opened the thumb-drive volume then entered TM.  TM showed only the current state with no backups.
I opened Preferences > Time Machine > Options…  It listed the thumb drive as excluded.  So I removed the exclusion.
I unmounted the thumb drive, mounted it again and repeated the experiment.  Same result.  It appeared in the exclusion list again.
What gives?  How do I tell TM to backup external volumes (or not to exclude doing so)?

    Yep.  Read that before posting.
    Also found https://discussions.apple.com/message/20711519#20711519
    where Linc Davis says
External drives are automatically added to the Time Machine exclusion list. To back them up, remove them from the list. Volumes on the backup drive itself are automatically excluded, and you can't change that.
There is no reason why you shouldn't back up multiple volumes in Time Machine.
I did remove it from the exclusions list but TM added it back.  What now?

  • Lost access file to external volume

After a recent cleanup (which obviously was a little too "thorough") I tried to mount my Time Capsule (which is partitioned for both Time Machine and manual backup), and received this message:
This Data file is just an alias and the original cannot be found. Even so, I can still access Time Machine so it seems that it is only this access file (or whatever you call it) that´s lost.
Now, since I´m not a Mac expert I can´t figure out how to go back and fix this; as external volumes are not backed up by Time Machine I don´t really have a backup. I could try to reset the entire hard drive to a week ago, but would really like to avoid that, as I´ve done a lot of work since then.
I believe what happened was that I used MacKeeper´s function "Disk usage" and revealed that the folder "Volumes" spent a whole lot of disk space on my MBP. Being completely braindead at the time, I figured that this had nothing to do with what was actually stored on the external drive (as that shouldn´t take up space on the MBP), and so I deleted the folder "Data" through MacKeeper. As that file went missing I´m now denied access to my manual backup on the TC, and appreciate any advise. Thanks

  • Aperture reporting external volume offline

I have imported approx 11,000 images as referenced masters. The images are stored on an external firewire drive. Aperture is unable to locate the master images and is reporting that the drive is offline. Finder sees the drive just fine.
I have manually reconnected several projects, but this seems liek a pain since I have 15 projects. Is there anyway reconnect all images in all projects? Is there any explanation why aperture loses the ability to connect an external volume?
If aperture cannot keep track of external volumes properly, I think I have wasted my money.

Why should my aperture library be on the external disk? Won't this prevent me from being able to browse images, add keywords, set ratings, etc. when the external disk is offline?
I have relinked each of the projects, but now I am seeing another problem. I originally created the projects by importing folders as projects. Most of the folders that I imported contained subfolders. Several of the top-level folders contain folders with the same name, e.g.
    Photos archived 2-2006
    Brandon
    Sonia
    etc.
    Photos archived 10-2006
    Brandon
    Sonia
    etc.
After relinking the projects, some images now show up in the wrong project. For example, file001.jpg is on the file system in "Photos archived 2-2006/Brandon" but shows up in the project "Photos archived 10-2006".
I'm not sure if it is the external volume or the fact that I used to import folders and projects option, but Aperture does not seem stable.
