LabVIEW 7 Express Evaluation Tutorial CD for a Learning Center

Hi,
I was given a LabVIEW 7 Express CD and instructed to see what it would take to make it work in our Learning Center.
I did discover that disk 1 was a self contained tutorial (NI has my gratitude for that, by the way, nothing to install makes it very portable for the learner!).
Disk 2 has an evaluation copy of LabVIEW that is good for 30 days.
So what happens if someone wants to use the CD in the Learning Center and installs the evaluation copy on the station, and then someone else at a later time wants to use the evaluation copy on the same station?
Can it be reinstalled for that computer or is that stations' use of the evaluation copy expired?
Shannon

The evaluation version can not be reinstalled on the same machine and work (actually, it almost certainly can, and it's probably fairly easy, but I'm not sure how legal that is).
What you might want to do is contact your local NI office and see if you can get the student edition of LV (which is significantly cheaper) or buy the base version, which is cheaper ("only" a 1000$), but probably not really worth it, because it almost doesn't support anything (can't configure events and so on).
Another option, if you're always the one tutoring, is to ask NI if you can use the license differently. They have recently made changes to the license allowing you to install your version on several computers as long as you're the only one using it and it's not being used at two places concurrently. While this doesn't apply to 7.0, you may be able to convince them to let you do this. They are usually reasonable when it comes to things like this.

  • What's the maximum digital I/O frequency for the NI LabVIEW RIO Evaluation Kit ?

    Hi!
    I'm trying to analyze some sort of sine signal at the frequency of about 3 MHz. Because the analysis should be very precise and fast (about 10 samples per period), I'm needing the maximum digital I/O frequency of the NI LabVIEW RIO Evaluation Kit.
    Regards,
    Erik

    Dracyon,
    Can you please clarify a couple of things: you say you are trying to acquire a sine wave that has a frequency of 3 MHz, but you are asking for the maximum DIO frequency. I believe what you need to know is the maximum analog sampling frequency. For the sbRIO-9636 (part of the evaluation kit), the maximum aggregate sampling frequency is 200 kS/s at 16 bits of resolution. At 10 samples per period, you could sample a ~20k analog signal. If you are actually looking for maximum DIO frequency, this is a bit more complicated. We have a good whitepaper explaining this.

  • Basic LabVIEW example or tutorial for motor control beginner?

    Hello,
    I'd like to control two brushless servo motors using LabVIEW. I've got a PXI7358 controller card and a Copley amplifier. I've read the Getting Started tutorial but otherwise I am new to LabVIEW. I'm looking for a good basic VI and/or a tutorial about how to get started programming the motion of these motors with LabVIEW.
    Thanks,
    Matthew

    Hi, I'm not sure whether this is the right place for asking this question or not and if not, then please guide me to the right place for asking such question. Thanks.
    I have a stepper motor with the Vector Network Analyzer Anritsu MS4623B. I got it up and running with the LabWindows/CVI. I need to sync the motion of the stepper motor with my data acquisition. Basically, I have to acquire the data in a way that in the start the motor will come back to home position wherever it was and then I want to move it to the specific position to do the measurements (For Example, I want to measure the 40 GHz channel between 1m to 3m movement of a stepper motor on a linear positioning system (ball-screw)). I've interfaced the VNA with the PC using LabWindows/CVI and I've controlled the clockwise and anti-clockwise movements of the stepper motor using LabWindows/CVI but I'm unable to sync the system in a way that whenever I run the code, the motor will run back to the home position and then move to a specific measurement start position and move till the end position and in between do the increment and stop and acquire the data. Is there any one to help me please? It's really urgent please and I'm doing this thing first time so please guide me in a proper way. I shall really apprecaite that and will be highly obliged with you. Thanks for your time and concern.
    Thanks and Regards.

  • I am looking for an boolean and numeric expression evaluator. I want to be able to compare ( ,=, , or, not, and, nand, etc)and evaluate boolean/numeric expression.

    I am looking for an boolean and numeric expression evaluator. I want to be able to compare (>,=, <, or, not, and, nand, etc)and evaluate boolean/numeric expression. Does anyone know if there is any code samples anywhere. If anyone has any input, I would greately appreciate it.

    The problem is that I have to enter a string of that type (any random string), and the program should go and calculate the result for the whole stirng, by looking at which parts to calculate first (figuring out precedence), second, etc. This is like a calculator, you don't know what the user is going to enter next, so I can't just use the boolean palatte. I could use it if the equation was always of the form "a 'operator' b", where the operator is any logic or comparison operator. But that is not what I am trying to accomplish.
    Can you do logic in the formula node? I think it only allows numeric values for inputs and outputs, it doesn't let you enter in and output booleans and stuff..does it?
    Thanks,

  • Algorithm for Expression Evaluator

    Hi,
    Can any one help me in finding out the algo of Expression Evaluator,Changing Pre fix to Post Fix and vise versa.
    Tx in advance.
    from
    gomes_deb

    There is a math expression parser at http://www.bestcode.com. It forms a tree structure where nodes are operators, functions, variables, numbers. Each node of the tree has children (for example parameters of a function are it's children in this tree). So, if you have a "x+sin(y)", the tree is like this:
    ___+
    _x     sin
    _______y
    Then when it is time to evaluate, you set the values of X and Y and call evaluate() method and it tells you what the result is.
    The java bean is called JbcParser. It's features are:
    *Easy to use, simple class API.
    *Comes with predefined functions.
    *Users can create custom functions/variables.
    *Optimization: Constant expression elimination for repeated tasks.
    Analytical Operators: +, -, /, , ^(power)
    *Logical Operators: =(equals),&(and),|(or),!(not), <>(not equals), <=(less than or equals), >=(greater than or equals)
    *Paranthesis: (, {, [
    *Functions in the form of: f(x, y, z, ...)
    *Function parameters are not calculated until needed.
    *List of predefined functions is available in the documentation.
    *Java source code is included.
    An example of a simple expression is : LN(X)+SIN(10/2-5)
    When parsed, this expression will be represented as: since the SIN(10/2-5) is in fact SIN(0) which is a constant and is 0.
    Thus, in a loop, if you change the value of X and ask for the value of the expression, it will be evaluated quite fast since SIN(10/2-5) is not dependent on X.
    X and Y are predefined variables. You can create your own variables as needed.
    There are many predefined mathematical functions. They are listed in documentation. You can create your functions as needed. IF logic is implemented through a predefined IF(A,B,C) function. Similar logical functions can be created as needed.
    It is located at: http://www.bestcode.com/html/jbcparser.html

  • Why should I adopt LABVIEW FPGA as a tool for developing my FPGA projects?

    Dear Friends,
    Since I have started using LABVIEW FPGA, I got too many questions in my mind looking for answers!
    1-      Does anybody can tell me “why should I adopt LABVIEW FPGA as a tool for developing my FPGA projects?”
    I mean there are many great tools in this field (e.g. Xilinx ISE, ….); what makes LABVIEW FPGA the perfect tools that can save my time and my money?
    I’m looking for a comparison can show the following points:
    ·         The Code size and speed optimization.
    ·         Developing time.
    ·         Compiling time.
    ·         Verifying time.
    ·         Ability to developing in future.
    ·         …etc.. 2-
    I’ve Spartan-3E kit, I’m so glad that LABVIEW support this kit; I do enjoyed programming the kit using LABVIEW FPGA, but there are too many obstacles!
    The examples come with Spartan-3E driver don't cover all peripherals on board (e.g. LAN port is not covered)! There is a declaration at NI website which is "LabVIEW FPGA drivers and examples for all on-board resources" Located at: http://digital.ni.com/express.nsf/bycode/spartan3eI don’t think that is true!
    Anyway, I will try to develop examples for the unsupported peripherals, but if the Pins of these peripherals are not defined in the UCF file, the effort is worthless! The only solution in this case is to develop VHDL code in ISE and use it in Labview FPGA using HDL node!?
    3-      I wonder if NI has any plan to add support for Processor setup in Labview FPGA (Like we do in EDK)?
    4-      I wonder if NI has any plan to develop a driver for Virtex-5 OpenSPARC Evaluation Platform ?http://www.digilentinc.com/Products/Detail.cfm?NavPath=2,400,599&Prod=XUPV5

    1. LabVIEW FPGA utilizes the intuitive graphical dataflow language of LabVIEW to target FPGA technology. LabVIEW is particularly nice for FPGA programming because of its ability to represent parallelism inherent to FPGAs. It also serves as a software-like programming experience with loops and structures which has become a focus of industry lately with C-to-gates and other abstraction efforts. Here are some general comparison along the vectors you mentioned
    Code Size and speed optimization - LabVIEW FPGA is a programming language. As such, one can program badly and create designs that are too big to fit on a chip and too slow to meet timing. However, there are two main programming paradigms which you can use. The normal LabVIEW dataflow programming (meaning outside a single-cycle loop) adds registers in order to enforce dataflow and synchronization in parity with the LabVIEW model of computation. As with any abstraction, this use of registers is logic necessary to enforce LabVIEW dataflow and might not be what an expert HDL programmer would create. You trade off the simplicity of LabVIEW dataflow in this case. On the other hand, when you program inside a Single-Cycle timed loop you can achieve size and speed efficiencies comparable to many VHDL implementations. We have had many users that understand that way LabVIEW is transformed to hardware and program in such a way to create very efficient and complex systems.
    Development Time - Compared to VHDL many of our users get near infinite improvements in development time due to the fact that they do not know (nor do they have to know) VHDL or Verilog. Someone who knows LabVIEW can now reach the speeds and parallelism afforded by FPGAs without learning a new language. For harware engineers (that might actually have an alternative to LabVIEW) there are still extreme time saving aspects of LabVIEW including ready-made I/O interfaces, Simple FIFO DMA transfers, stichable IP blocks, and visualizable parallism.  I talk to many hardware engineers that are able to drastically improve development time with LabVIEW, especially since they are more knowledgable about the target hardware.
    Compilation Time - Comparable to slightly longer to due to the extra step of generating intermediate files from the LabVIEW diagram, and the increased level of hierarchy in the design to handle abstraction.
    Verification Time - One of our key development initiatives moving forward is increased debugging capabilities. Today we have the abilities to functionally simulate anything included in LabVIEW FPGA, and we recently added simluation capabilities for Imported IP through the IP Integration node on NI Labs and the ability to excite your design with simulated I/O. This functional simualation is very fast and is great for verification and quick-turn design iteration. However, we still want to provide more debugging from the timing prespective with better cycle-accurate simulation. Although significantly slower than functional simulation. Cycle-accuracy give us the next level of verification before compilation. The single cycle loop running in emulation mode is cycle accurate simluation, but we want more system level simulation moving forwrad. Finally, we have worked to import things like Xilinx chipscope (soon to be on NI Labs) for on-chip debugging, which is the final step in the verification process. In terms of verification time there are aspects (like functional simulation) that are faster than traditional methods and others that are comparable, and still other that we are continuing to refine.
    Ability to develop in the future - I am not sure what you mean here but we are certainly continuing to activiely develop on the RIO platform which includes FPGA as the key diffentiating technolgoy.  If you take a look at the NI Week keynote videos (ni.com/niweek) there is no doubt from both Day 1 and Day 2 that FPGA will be an important well maintained platform for many years to come.
    2. Apologies for the statement in the document. The sentence should read that there are example for most board resources.
    3. We do have plans to support a processor on the FPGA through LabVIEW FPGA. In fact, you will see technology on NI Labs soon that addresses this with MicroBlaze.
    4. We do not currently have plans to support any other evaluation platforms. This support was created for our counterparts in the academic space to have a platform to learn the basics of digital design on a board that many schools already have in house. We are currently foccussing on rounding out more of our off-the-shelf platform with new PCI Express R Series boards, FlexRIO with new adapter modules, cRIO with new Virtex 5 backplanes, and more.
     I hope this has anwered some of the questions you have.

  • Expert LabVIEW code evaluation?

    Does anyone know of a place (or person) that will do LabVIEW code evaluation? - To look at the actual block diagrams and give advice? I realize that's what we do here to a large extent, but I'm referring to an email exchange of info regarding a fairly large, completed and running program.

    I don't think the training sessions had anything to do with the Alliance Member's failure. The Alliance Member failed because they lacked the expertise in vision systems to complete your application. Perhaps that fact was compounded by poor time management as well. I find that a good approach is to bring in the Alliance Member / consultant for a limited period, say 2 or 3 days. You let them attack part of your application or problem and from that you can gage their level of competency. If they are no good, then you've only spent a few k$ and probably learned a few tricks. There are lots of us out there. You are sure to find one that can meet your needs.
    I'm obviously biased, but I have had the unfortunate experience of looki
    ng at code / work-product left behind at customers of other Alliance Members. Most of the time I don't like what I see. Unfortunately, NI inside sales and the NI field sales force are not in general equipped to judge software expertise. The relatively new Certification program helps immensely, so look for the CLD (Certified LabVIEW Developer) credential. The higher-level CLA (Architect) may become a good benchmark too, but you're likely to pay a bit of a premium (rightfully so).
    Alliance Members can be very helpful and we produce brilliant solutions on a daily basis. Like I always say, we do this stuff every day. There's just no substitute for that. Give us a chance (or two) to prove how useful we can be and to show you the full potential of LabVIEW.

  • Start LabVIEW in evaluation mode

    Hello All,
    I am building an NI Dev Suite unattended/silent install which includes LabVIEW 2013, TestStand 2013, Switch Exec, some reuse libraries etc.
    The installer works fine. After an automatic restart, I need to apply a configuration (automatically) using VI Package Manager and this requires LabVIEW to be working without prompts for licences etc.
    Anyone know of a way to start LabVIEW in evaluation mode by default. Any ini tokens / registry entries may be?
    I also need the same thing to happen with TestStand as I need to install some configuration to TestStand too.
    All of the software will then be licensed by the user afterwards. I would like to avoid building two installers if I can help it.
    thanks in advance.

  • Less voltag in J502/DIO sbRIO 9636 (NI LabVIEW RIO Evaluation Kit )

    Hello,
    I bought the NI LabVIEW RIO Evaluation Kit (with sbRIO9636). I have problem with the sbRIO9636. The voltag in J502,DIO Pin 49 and 50 is less than 5V (just 1.7V). so VCC of the LabVIEW RIO Evaluation board with a digital encoder, LCD screen, function generation, etc. can't get the enough voltag (5V) und can't work.
    For example >VCC of LCD screen is just 1.7 V and not to work. So this is a Hardware problem? Can man solve the problem?

    Hi Duffy and KellyDog,
    +5V should be available on the pins and connector that Duffy is referencing.
    KellyDog,
    Couple of questions.  Is anything connected to the sbRIO-9636 in addition to the power cable?  Does the unit boot and connect to your host PC over ethernet?  If the +5V power supply was damaged and only supplying ~1.7V, I wouldn't expect the board to boot, as all the onboard power supplies are derived from that rail.  Has anything happened to the board that would cause you to suspect power supply damage?  There is a fuse on the +5V pins, so is it possible that the 5V supply pins were accidentally shorted to ground, potentially damaging the fuse?  If so, this board would need to be returned for repair (RMA) as the fuses are not user servicable.

    <af:iterator id="i1" value="#{bindings.leaderBoardEntities.collectionModel}"
    var="entity" rows="#{bindings.leaderBoardEntities.rangeSize}">
    <af:image id="i2" source="#{pageFlowScope.ImagesBean.imageUrlPair[entity.displayName]}"
    shortDesc="user info"
    inlineStyle="width:50px;height:50px;"/>
    </af:iterator>
    I am unable to evalue the key for the map.
    I tried,
    source="#{pageFlowScope.ImagesBean.imageUrlPair[entity.displayName]}
    source="#{pageFlowScope.ImagesBean.imageUrlPair['#{entity.displayName}']}
    source="#{pageFlowScope.ImagesBean.imageUrlPair['${entity.displayName}']}
    source="#{pageFlowScope.ImagesBean.imageUrlPair[#{entity.displayName}]}--this is syntactically wrong
    However , this works
    source="#{pageFlowScope.ImagesBean.imageUrlPair['Twitter']}
    Kindly help me

    Hi,
    this is because the row does not have a setDisplayName and getDisplayName method. It has setAttribute(int), setAttribute(String) as well as getAttrinute(int), getAttribute(String) methods. So the input you provide is constantly null
