LabVIEW hangs while writing to unavailable network Drive

Hello,
I am trying to write data at the end of my test sequence run to a file and storing it on a network drive.
If there is a problem with the network drive (busy or disconnected), then my application hangs for around 10-15 secs before giving out error that the drive is unavailable.  This is causing the hardware to stop functioning which is dependent on my application.  Is there a easy way to check if my network is present and my drives are present?  I have tried using the file/directory info VI's present on the file I/O palette and they also cause the application to hang for 10-15 sec before giving out the error.
Thanks,
Jagan.

Hi Jaggs,
   nice question!
I think the problem is that is not only your LabView application which stops, but the Operating System which hangs, if Storage device access fails.  I experienced this problem under many OSs, Win, Linux, Dos-like...even RTOSes (try to access a corrupted Flash card in PharLap ETS for FieldPoint!).
To check if drive is present, you can ping it... it's quite naive, but at least you avoid the "drive disconnected" problem... I think a ping shouldn't hang PC...
What Hardware are you controlling? You know, some NI boards (many...) have onboard memory, and can sample independently of PC control....for a while, of course!
I hope some guru will answer to your question (which I didn't answered, I know! ), because I'm interested too!
   Have a nice day!

  • Project started in Terminal session stops responding while saving to maped network drive from user wokstation.

Project is installed on Windows 2012R2 and is used as RemoteApp.
If rdp file is configured to connect all or any user local drives Project hangs just after pressing "Save" button. If i forbid local drive mapping in collection settings or just rdp file - everythig works. The problem is that we need to map local
drives because we use file associations.
I've seen a lot of same questions about different Office applications hanging while saving to \\tsclient without solutions :(

    vden,
Thanks for the post!  Let me confirm that I understand the issue, when drive redirection is enabled and you attempt to save a file to the mapped local drive the RemoteApp application hangs?
If my understanding of the issue is correct, this should not happen.  Does the app, for example, Project ever recover or does it always remain hung?

  • Do not buy a 4510L - internet randomly hangs while browsing - likely 4G network issues

Ok, so I was excited to jump into a 4G wifi hotspot. I did some quick research and noticed the Samsung 4G hotspot was having some internet connection issues. Samsung had released an update but I didn't want to bother. I mentioned to the Verizon Wireless sales person the hotspot issues and she mentioned she hadn't seen any issues with the Samsung or Mifi device... so I purchased the mifi4510L... and so starts the nightmare!
So the mifi4510L device started up and I connected to the internet. My connection speed was slower than my 3G ATT smartphone. I restarted the device a few times and finally noticed really high speeds both down and up. Apparently upon reading the manual, at first it was flashing yellow (3G connection) and after 30 minutes it finally found the 4G (flashing green) with 4 bars.
I immediately start noticing that when I'm working, websites start to randomly hang... using windows xp. I restarted the device numerous times, took out the battery, sim card and it still would hang on random websites. So I tried using my personal Windows 7 laptop... same problem... how about my Android smartphone on wifi... same problem... oh and an old laptop I have at home with Windows Vista... same problem.
So, of course, the first thing to do is jump on google to see if this is a wide spread problem with mifi. The problem is though, that many people don't know how to describe the problem. I saw a few instances of people having somewhat similar problems and exchanging the device numerous times and even switching out sim cards.
By now it is very late at night/early morning. I thought since many people seem to be having issues maybe Verizon customer service would be aware of the problem and could help. Well now I was talking to someone who barely speaks english. He has no idea about what this mifi thing is and has never dealt with any tech support regarding the device. I was put on hold while he researched the issue, I asked about resetting the device, and he mentioned the Mifi has no reset button... later, I found a pdf of the manual and found the reset button..I was working in the dark and never noticed it was right there in front of me, So before I hung up the phone, Verizon customer service promised they would call within 48hrs and give me an update on what they had found... It's been a month and still no call.
So a week later, the problem is still occurring, even at different locations with 4bars on 4G. I decided to stop by the Verizon wireless store. I asked about issues with the mifi and was told there weren't any issues. I found this strange since I had now seen so many posts online about the problems people were having. I tried every salesman in the store and was told the same. Ok so now I wanted to try out the Samsung hotspot. At first I was told I could only exchange it for another mifi... then they said oh I would just have to pay a restocking fee. Some online posts seemed to suggest that exchanging the device and sim card helped so I did just that. I made it home, and the first thing I notice is that now I had no sim card... a trip back to the store to pick up the sim card. It took about 10-15 minutes before it established the 4G connection but I was back up and running. I was online for about 10 minutes and no hang so I went to bed.
Another week goes by and  now I am really frustrated. Calls to Verizon are the typical; there are no problems, just reset, restart,or go exchange for a new one.
And now I found the following video that suggests it's the 4G network itself.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AQMMK87N2g
Verizon is supposed to be a great company! Why would they destroy their reputation just to make a quick few million dollars. The Customer Service/tech support was a horrible experience and the 4G network doesn't seem to work properly.
A call tonight to Verizon concluded with "well with any new technology there are bound to be some issues, over time Verizon should have some type of fix".
Where is the class action lawsuit?!?!

JV1, if you are early enough to get out of the contract, do it! If you browse through these forums (and other on internet) you will find this is Verizon 4G, it will NOT get better anytime soon. This problem has existed since launch, through the 4510L is the worst device they have, it's not the culprit, I have had all of them.  It is the network.
Oh and by the way, Verizon isn't stupid, someone else pointed out to me the small print on the contract prohibits you from pursuing a class action suit against them.  All disputes have to be settled by arbitration which is binding per contract.  Guess they knew this would happen......

  • Unavailable mapped network drive hangs file explorer

I am using Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) and I have this problem from beginning.
I have mapped two network drives, one is my home NAS and second is shared network storage in our office.
When I open some application which is loading directories (XnView for example) in my computer OR I want open some file in any application
OR, especially, I want to save some new document by "Save as" button (in Notepad, MS Word for example), application hangs for about 30 seconds and I can not work with it. Other applications are working fine during this freeze.
The problem occurs when I am at home and the network storage in office is not available (or I am in the office and home NAS is not available of course), but Windows
doesn't show unavailable drive as disconnected.
When I connect my computer to the office VPN (and both network storages are available) OR I unmap unavailable network drive, everything works perfectly... but it is really not comfortable.
I have tried stop Indexing and disable Windows Defender as I read on some forums but without any solution.
Any hints how to solve this issue?

This isn't one I've seen personally, and I can really test whether this would work, however...
On each of your network drives, try selecting something (doesn't matter what, but probably something small is better), right clicking on the folder and selecting "Always available offline" so your machine maintains a local copy of that information.
My logic being, by doing that on both network drives, each of them contains some information which is available regardless of the resource itself being visible. In this situation Windows will continue to show those network drives as available and accessible,
even if you're no longer connected to either network. Since those folders are available the network drives will also be available, and if you're no connected to the resource itself, Windows will still see that drive as connected, will still be able to list
it, and the apps you're seeing this issue with should no longer have any problems (provided they're not trying to access information on one of those drives that isn't available obviously!).

  • I just upgraded to CC (from LR 5) on Macbook Pro and can no longer import to Network Drive.  New version is LR 5.7.  Help?

Just like the title says: MBP, retina works great with LR 5 installed from CD.  Added CC, upgraded to LR 5.7 and now import "hangs" with no activity.  Have been using LR since version 2.
More info: the problem is writing to my network drive (which has been working since LR 2...  It seems a Temporary Folder is created with permissions 755 (owner=rw, group=r, others=r),
    then nothing more.
Has something changed with respect to LR handling of network drives.  This is a Linux CIFS/SMB share (again, been using since LR 2).  Catalog is local on my MBP.

This is my post and I'm new, so I may not be providing the answer in the "usual" manner.  (Feel free to educate me!)
    Solution:
The mounted volume on MacBook is /Volumes/photowork.  Notice the lowercase 'p' in photowork.   In LR I had selected a mount point
with *uppercase* 'p'.  See screen shot.  Summary: The already-selected mount point was /Volumes/Photoshop.  LR had no complaints.  When
I changed the mount point to /Volumes/photowork LR imported as expected.
This only became an issue since the upgrade, as I simply never tinkered with mount points and so on.  This archive
server has files back to 2000 on it.    Thanks so much to those who responded.

  • Windows explorer keeps computing items after accessing a mapped network drive

Our organization has decided to upgrade to windows 7 but we are running into a problem with windows explorer green progress bar hanging after accessing a mapped network drive. When you try to go back to computer or access the control panel after going
3 or more folders deep into the mapped drive, windows explorer just keeps searching.
When you expand the arrow in the address bar it states that it is computing items and never stops.
The only way around this is to right click on libraries and select reset back to defaults and everything is back to normal.
We are deploying this image of windows 7 to over a 1000 computers and we cannot have this problem lingering, does anyone have a solution to resolve this issue. This does not happen in Windows XP.
We have tried to turn off windows search and remote differential compression and this does work but the problem is that you lose all search capabilities in windows. So windows search needs to be enabled. We also tried to adjust the MTU, change GP settings,
and nothing seems to work except to turn windows search off or reset libraries back to default.
We also did some research online and there are so many people experiencing the same problem, with no resolution expect they have to go back to Windows XP. That is not an option for us.
Please help us we would really greatly appreciate it.

    Hi,
The issue could be related to searching and indexing feature in Windows 7. I suggest rebuilding the indexing files.
    Click Start -> Type
indexing options in the search box -> Advanced -> Index Settings tab-> Rebuild buttion.
For more information, you can refer to:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Change-advanced-indexing-options
If the issue persists, you can perform the following troubleshooting steps.
    1. Go to update your network adapter drivers and BIOS from manufacture's site manually.
    2. If any router is involved, please update the firmware.
    3. Perform a System File Checker.

  • Indexing on network drives

Hi Guys - I have seen several posts regarding this and didn't see any specific answer. So I am posting it again.
In my case, it is a 64 bit machine. I know there is a Hotfix available for this on 32 bit platforms and I am not looking for any library add function as well.
Please advise if there is any update/solution available to fix this thing.
    Many Thanks!

OS - Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit
    Errors - NO
Issue - In this machine, there are 5 network drives mapped and User wants to search in that network drives. While doing search on network drives, it doesn't show any results. At the same time, it shows results for local drives.
KB918996 - found working on one 32 bit machine.
As in the above link - I can't make all drives 'available offline'. is the following only solution available to make
    it work?
    =====================================
    1. Create a folder on your hard drive for shares. i.e. c:\share
    2. Create another folder in the above share. i.e. c:\share\music
    2. Link the Library to this folder.
    3. Delete the folder.
    4. Use the mklink in an elevated command prompt to make a symbolic link. Name the link the same as the
    folder you created above.
    i.e - mklink /d c:\share\music \\server\music
    5. Done. Now you have non-indexed UNC path as a library.

  • Labview exe slow to start over network

I am executing a Labview exe built in version 7.1.1 by running it from a local server in our plant. It takes approx. 50 seconds to display it's front panel. If I run it from my local drive it comes up in a few seconds. To copy the exe from the netwark drive is also quite fast, only a few seconds. I have seen this behavior many times with Labview exe's running from a network drive. Does anyone know why this is happening, and if there is a solution to this slow startup issue?
    Thanks,
    Howard Spec

It's good to know it's not just me that has this problem, and I can run locally since we are doing CRC check on the exe before using it. I would still like an explaination for why this is the case with Labview exe's (or maybe any exe)?
    Thanks,

  • I bought a new MacBookPro moved everything from old MacBookPro, new machine runs 10.6.7 - but iPhoto won't 'upgrade' the library - just hangs up supposedly while writing new library. help. thanks.

How did you "move everything" over?
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

  • XCOPY and ROBOCOPY hang if file is locked nd Destination is a network drive

This question was first posted to the Scripting Forum.  They indcated I should switch to the Plarform Forum.  I'm hoping this is the right place.  So ...
On my home PCs, when using XCOPY or ROBOCOPY to copy an Outlook .pst file while Outlook is open and has the file partially locked causes XCOPY and ROBOCOPY opertations to abort immediately and report the file as partially locked if the Destination is another
drive on the same PC or a USB drive.  That's good, and is as I expect.  But if the Destination drive is a network share (e.g.
\\Whatever\Whatever) then both XCOPY and ROBOCOPY hang forever - even when specifying zero retries in ROBOCOPY and even after Outlook is closed and the file lock is released.  The old DOS command COPY properly recognizes
the lock and aborts regardless of the Destination location.  But COPY won't replicate the file Create/Modify dates on the Destination location as XCOPY and ROBOCOPY do.  I'm using straight DOS from a .bat file
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to recognize this condition and avoid or correct it?

Ivan-Liu: Thanks for your input.  The thread you referred me to looked promising, but ultimately was not a solution.
It focuses on ROBOCOPY and the use of an elevated command prompt.
First of all, as I initially reported, I found the same “hang” behavior with ROBOCOPY as with XCOPY.
Secondly, I prefer to avoid ROBOCOPY because one of the PCs I am trying to support is still running a version of Windows XP that does not make ROBOCOPY available to me.
I have not yet tried the operation when using “run as an administrator,” but my own login has administrator privilege and still exhibits the problem.
Moreover, the operation (both XCOPY and ROBOCOPY) always completes without issue when the .pst file is NOT locked.
The hang-up occurs only when I forget to close Outlook before initiating the XCOPY or ROBOCOPY operation.
I still need to confirm that the behavior is the same whether using a UNC pathname or a mapped drive name.
But my memory is that the copy operations still hang if the file is locked when the copy operation is initiated.
The two main PCs I use are running Windows-7 (one 64-bit and one 32-bit.)
The .pst file in question varies, but is typically between 100MB and 400MB.
The behavior is consistent, regardless of size.  I have not tested the behavior with smaller .pst files or with other locked files of any size.
I’m now of the belief that my issue relates to the specific storage solution I have in place, which consists of an external 1TB Seagate USB drive plugged into a Belkin router, which subsequently makes the drive visible to my Windows home network as a network
drive.  I don’t know if it’s a Seagate issue or a Belkin issue.
I’m still working to rule out Belkin by connecting the Seagate drive directly to a PC, but have not had time to complete that test yet.
I suspect Belkin, though, because attempts to XCOPY or ROBOCOPY to a thumb drive will abort immediately and report the file is locked.
Plus, I also have a separate problem wherein certain .xlsm files copied to the Seagate drive (when it is connected to the Belkin router) always report that they are corrupt if/when I attempt to use Excel to open the Seagate copy.
Excel always seems to successfully “repair” the files.
But I’ve been unable to discover a cause for that issue too.  Testing has shown that behavior to be consistent with both UNC and mapped drive names.

There is something incompatible would be my guess. Did you disconnect all your peripherals in safe mode just to check?
You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions.

  • LabVIEW for Mapping of Network Drives with Error Handling

Is there a way to do the following easily in LabVIEW?
    - List drive letters and network paths of existing mapped drives on host PC
    - Check if a desired mapped drive is connected and if its disconnected reconnect to it
    - Receive related errors that may occur during attempting a connection to a mapped drive (i.e. path cannot be found, etc...)
I know how to do most of this in VBScript but I'd like to avoid having ANY code for the work I'm doing be "non-G"!
    Thanks for your time!

  • Word and Excel hang "downloading" file from network drive - copy file to be able to open it

Word or Excel hang trying to open files on a network drive maybe after an untidy close.
Symptoms:  pick the file from a pinned entry on recent list or even direct from File!Open... or by double clicking on the file from file explorer.  Word/Excel show in the middle of the status line a comment "Downloading:filename "
a progress bar, that shows no progress, and a white cross on a red circle to close.  Some minutes later may Excel/Word  say could not open filename.
I have removed any temporary copies of the file prefixed with the ~. However there are no documents shown in any document recovery pane.
If I rename the original file the problem is still there.
I can only clear the problem by working on a copy of the file. It works with either a new name of if the copy is used to replace the original file.
It seems file explorer's "copy" is clearing something within the file that is causing this problem.
I have seen the same issue with both Excel and Word documents in native Office 2010 format.
Is there a better way to clear this issue?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    It doesn't hang/crash, does it?
If you could provide the exact error message, it would be preferred to determine the cause.
You can also try the steps below to modify the registry, as mentioned in this thread:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ba5114e0-98dd-4b44-a078-373df8899048/word-2007-issue-slow-opening-files?forum=word
Note your 12.0 represents Office 2007, 14.0 is for Office 2010.
    Important
This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the
registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry,

  • Networked Drive: An error occurred while trying to save your photo library

I just upgraded to iLife '08. After opening iPhoto '08 I began editing Events. After some merging and adding titles I got this error:
+"An error occurred while trying to save your photo library"+
My iPhoto Library is on a networked drive connected to another Mac. Both Macs are on the same switch and there appears to be no issues copying and deleting files and folders outside of iPhoto. Even inside iPhoto, this error is inconsistent, it happens on some changes and not others. I've had this setup for about three years with no issues in previous versions of iPhoto.

There's a strong chance that the problem is the format of the server. Event though the Mac can read and write to FAT formatted drives, there are file name length issues that can really mess up a library or other files.
If you really want to have an error free setup use a server that's formatted for Mac OS X (journaled).
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
