LabVIEW on the Mac at Macworld Expo 2008
National Instruments had a very small booth at Macworld Expo this year. They were there nonetheless and I asked them a few questions about the current state of LabVIEW on the Mac.
I also wanted to find out how, and if, a current Windows user like
myself could use a Mac exclusively and still manage to satisfy Windows
based LabVIEW project clients. According to Mike Neil, LabVIEW product
manager, you can have your cake, er… Mac and eat it too. With the use
of virtual machines (vmware fusion, parallels) or bootcamp
(which boots the whole machine into Windows), you can now run your
windows development environment on a Mac and satisfy any Windows
project requirements. Which leaves me asking myself, why am I still on
a PC?

Hey Michael,
With Parallels, VMWare, and Boot Camp, there are certainly fewer excuses to not own a Mac!
Take a look at this article as well:
Developing Data Acquisition Systems on the Mac with Virtualization Technology
It dicusses some of the testing done here with Parallels and VMWare.

Two questions, does resetting my Mac Book Pro late 2008 speed up after resetting? Also, do i need to get rid of my WLAN router to make my AIR PORT time capsule work?
Am grateful for any answers...its a 15,4"...
Will soon buy a new one, is battery better on 13 than 15 "?
Have a great day...If you mean restoring OS X, that won't necessarily have any effect on speed.
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

No need for the WLAN router with AirPort Time Capsule. -
8 gigs in Mac Book Pro late 2008
I have read that the Mac Book Pro late 2008 can now handle 8 gigs of ram, if you have the latest Boom Rom Version (i have the exat on needed). I currently have 4 gigs. My question is, is this some type of HACK, or is 8 gigs really supported by Apple? Can I buy 8 gigs from the Apple Store and have them put it in?
I am really not into HACKS, but 8 gigs would be nice.
THanks
bob+My question is, is this some type of HACK, or is 8 gigs really supported by Apple?+
It really is supported.
+Can I buy 8 gigs from the Apple Store and have them put it in?+
Yes, but you'll be paying about four times the going rate. It's easy to install RAM yourself. Just be careful not to touch the gold contacts, or if you do, clean them with rubbing alcohol. Also take care not to cross-thread the screws that hold the bottom cover on when you put them back in. -
LabVIEW on the Apple gathering at this year's NIWeek 2007
Dear platform independent LabVIEW wireworkers,
I have posted a similar mail to info-labview and LAVA already and would like to do the same here as well:
As I have the chance to attend NIWeek in Austin I'm looking forward to meet many fellow wireworkers there again. I would also like to know if there are some of you working or planning to work with LabVIEW on the Apple-Macintosh (or Linux) platform who will be attending NIWeek2007 and interested in a small, informal get-together to exchange ideas, views and information about the types of applications we are involved in. It may also be a chance to spell out a list of demands/concerns/questions about the platform independent aspects of LabVIEW.
If you are interested or if you know somebody who potentially is, please send me a note offline to: with the subject line and I will inform you about the location and the time the gathering will take place. Alternatively you may respond to this thread.
Thank you for the interest. I'm looking forward to meet you in person

Switzerland********Announcement: ''LabVIEW in Physics'' and ''LV on the Mac'' at NIWeek2007***********
Dear LabVIEW programmers attending NIWeek2007,
For those of you who would like to see something a bit different from the regular NI technology sessions I would like to announce a small off-the-tracks presentation:
How to LabVIEW in Physics Education
I will stage a short somewhat playful presentation which illustrates the ways we incorporated LabVIEW Virtual Instrumentation to perform real world demonstration experiments of physical phenomena. Strong arguments to promote graphical programming to interface with the real world will be given along with a few selected examples of didactical demonstration experiments in physics which should be instructive and fun too.
The presentation will start at 15:30 in Meeting Room 3 on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
Please mark the time in your agenda. The room may be found on this map:
http://www.austinconventioncenter.com/Planning/ACCMultiLevel.pdf
On the map, look at Level 1 North/South (at the bottom) and Meeting Room 3 is in yellow. There will be signs to help direct people to the room.
Right after this at 16:00 at the same location I would like to unite those wireworkers who prefer to work with LabVIEW on the Mac or Linux platforms with NI developers who produce hard- and software for those OSes.
The intention is to spend about 30 minutes on brainstorm platform independent aspects and concerns along the following lines:
1) What type of applications are we involved in?
2) Why is MacOSX a viable foundation for LabVIEW type interfacing with the real world specifically in science and research?
3) What types of hardware do we mostly use?
4) What kind of support do we demand from NI ? Is it Mac/linux specific? What are the roadblocks to NI in providing this?
5) What problems do we possibly have which are platform specific ?
6) What are priorities?
a) Hardware support including drivers, NIDAQmx, GPIB, Fieldpoint
b) Software support TEDS, TDMS, Hosting shared variables
c) Toolkits, IMAQ, Signal Analysis, PID
d) Realtime development
The ''LV on the Mac'' part should take about another 30 minutes until 16:30. However, we will have the room until 17:00 for personal informal talks thereafter.
I really hope to see as many of you fellow wireworkers as possible there (Specially for the second part at 16:00 !).
Please help to spread the message.
Regards and happy wireworks

I am trying to instal incloud on my macbook. Its the white computer from 2008 year. In order to do that I need to install the Mac OS Lion and ILife. I was able to buy the apps and install them on my other computer but How do I install on this computer?
Does your Mac meet the requirements?
Lion 10.7 System Requirements
• Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor (most models released since late 2006 - early Intel-based Macs with Core Solo or Core Duo processors aren't compatible)
• 2GB of memory (recommend at least 4GB -- and ideally even more, as you'll see benefits in many computing tasks)
• OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended) for Lion download from Apple App Store; or Leopard 10.5.x if using Lion on USB drive
• 7GB of available space (10GB recommended)
How to install Lion over Leopard - http://www.macworld.com/article/161087/2011/07/install_lion_over_leopard.html
Cheers, Tom -
Hi everyone, I have a macbook pro from 2008 which is the model before they became unibody. I have been having trouble using some of the built-in apps ever since i updated to 10.7.4. I cant use mail or the Mac App store becuase when i go to click on a link to purchase something in the Mac App Store of create a new email in Mail, the app just crashes. I am then asked to reopen the app and i try to do the same thing again and they same thing happens. Its really painful as i want to download applications and access my mail on my mac. Could you guys please get back to me on with somethings that i could try to get these apps working again.
ThanksHi Richard,
these are the things for when mail quits
here are the things that come from the console app
I also copied the words that came in the window when an app quits

How can I connect my Mac Book Pro (year 2008) to the TV set through HDMI? I've seen a DVI to HDMI iwire but I'm no sure that it is correct. Could anyone help me? Thank you very much.
I do not know the iWire adapter, but I use an inexpensive ($3) DVI to HDMI adapter from Monoprice, along with a regular HDMI cable:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041902 &p_id=2029&seq=1&format=2
Be aware that this will only transfer video. You Macbook Pro cannot combine audio through DVI to HDMI. You will need to listen to the audio through the Mac speakers, or attach speakers or a sound system to the Mac earphone jack, or determine if your TV has the ability to accept external sound from the Mac while showing video through HDMI (few can). -
I've got a 17" Mac Book Pro with Snow Leopard and Final Cut Studio 2 . Compressor 3 is only giving MOV-1 which are no use to me. So I've bought Compressor 4 from the App store which it says isn't compatible with the graphics card on my 2008 mbp. Can I
Install a new graphics card on my computer if so which one? If not can I solve the MOV-1 problem ?
Thanks in anticipation

PAGES COMPATIBILITY PROBLEM BETWEEN THE 2009 IPAD VERSION AND 2008 MAC VERSION ON MY LAPTOP. HOW DO WE FIX THIS?

What are you talking about? If I'm not not mistaken the iPad was released in April 2010 so there is no 2009 iPad version.
Typing in all capital letters in a forum like this is considered to be rude and all capital letters indicate that you are shouting. -
Hi all
I'm an AVID MediaComposer user and I was using it on a PC until the beginning this year I decided to go to MAC. I ordered the MAC pro according AVID's specs and I received the new model (I can't get anymore the old Mac Pro's - said the dealer). I noticed that even the new version of MC adrenaline V.2.8 will not run on the 10.5.1. Only on the 10.4.11. I tried to install 10.4.11 on this machine without any luck using the OS CD's. I even tried to install an internall 10.4.11 fitted disk drive but it wouldn't startup. I phoned the dealler and he said: "No way we can downgraded to 10.4.11. Sorry." The same thing was told by the Apple support line!!
Is that truth???!
Is there any way of doing it?
I need to start working and, if that's true, I'll need to go back to PC... Possibly I shouldn't have gone to MAC
Regards
Message was edited by: goncas_ptThere are a couple of things you could do......
1. Order a NVidia 7300 card from Apple for $149 & run that with a cloned 10.4.11 system, that works fine for 2d apps and video in a 2006 mac pro
I am not aware of any other incompatibilities with your motherboard but that is something you would need to test ! I am sure about the video card you have needing 10.5 though.
2. Offer to swap your mac pro for an earlier model. Try to get one still under warranty and find someone who will offer a cash adjust, if that matters to you. There must be heaps who would jump at the offer, and from your point of view it may just be worth it .....

Upgrading MacBook Pro to new machine want to unistall. No disc.
Strictly speaking you are supposed to supply the old discs with a computer since they are part of the computer package (for Macs at least).
Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775 (telephone numbers for other countries - http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57). Provide the serial number and specifications of the Mac. They may be able to provide a replacement set of discs for a fee. These discs will be for whatever OS was installed on the computer originally.
As far as your files are concerned, you can use another Mac or any retail version discs that will work in the old Mac to wipe the drive. To be more specific it would help to know what computers and which discs you actually own.
If you install an operating system (OS) on a Mac you also need to provide the discs (i'm talking about pre-OSX 10.7).
I have seen Macs sold without the original OS discs. If you do that then you at least need to provide the disc for the one on the computer. I guess you could try to sell the computer without an OS but that might be hard. If I was buying your computer I would want to see it boot, and I also might not want the hassle of getting an OS disc for it befre I could use it in any way. You'd have to come down a bit to make it sell.
Given all the above, I would still go with Snow Leopard. The retail disc itself will be as cheap as the original. The only things it might miss vs. the original will be bundled software (most of which will be outdated, though somebody might prefer older version to none) and perhaps the hardware test utility. Having a slightly newer OS might make the computer more attractive. -
How diagnose the extra SATA ports on the Mac Pro (early 2008) logic board?
I have had two SSDs in an OWC multi-mount in the second optical bay, one for Lion and one for Photoshop scratch. However, I recently began having intermittent boot problems. Sometimes there wouldn't be an Apple symbol upon boot/reboot, yet sometimes there would and the computer would boot. I have not experienced any crashes, kernel panics or such.
I thought the Lion SSD was faulty so installed Mountain Lion on the scratch drive, a Mercury Electra 3G which I have recently received as a replacement from OWC due to a previously faulty SSD. However, immediately there were boot problems from that SSD.
I have a feeling there is something wrong with the two extra SATA ports on the logic board. I am now booted off the Lion SSD placed in an external USB enclosure, which works but is a bit slower (I will get a bracket to install that SSD in the ordinary internal bays).
My question is how I can diagnose the logic board generally and specifically the extra SATA ports. I have Tech Tool Pro 6. I also thought I had AHT but on the Leopard DVD 1, which came with the Mac Pro (10.5.2) and on which AHT is supposed to be there is no trace of AHT. Odd. Booting from that DVD will only bring up the Leopard installer.
Btw I do think the Electra is broken because I am unable to boot ML from it in the USB enclosure.
Grateful for any ideas how to check my logic board.
Cheers
/pIf you could move the drives easily to another location then you could test the drives and also - make backup images! just to be safe. SSDs and their firmware and problems are almost all too common, even this last June a large issue with SandForce which OWC uses in some/most of theirs, and I get the feeling they are usually behind in testing and sending out firmware updates.
Corsair, Crucial and Intel have all had issues since it surfaced in May.
Diagnosing a motherboard with Apple Service Diagnostic CD is one thing. Swapping out SATA cables though no. WD Lifeguard does check communication to an SATA device drive and can - but you need to see the device in Windows or their boot CD (linux I imagine). Quite good utility though maybe not for an SSD. -
Can LabVIEW acess the ethernet card MAC adress by any dll ?
I've seen other postings telling that it is possible to acess the MAC adress using IPCONFIG/all by DOS command and using system exec. I also saw that it is possible (under windows 2000) change this number under configuration. I tried and it really changes ! I was wondering if it is possbile to use any windows dll to acess this MAC Adress ?
RKOHi Gurdas,
I found a couple example programs that might help you out.
I have attached a GetMacAddress.vi that uses a CIN to make calls to Windows API to return the MAC address of the computer.
The second example Get_Remote_MAC_Address.vi will retrieve the MAC address of a remote computer on your local subnet. It uses calls to the System Exec VI which calls the Windows utilities "ping" and "arp" which return this information. It then parses the MAC address and returns it. Unfortunately the "arp" command does not properly return the MAC address when fed the IP address of the computer that runs it, so if you feed the VI the IP address of the computer that is executing the VI, it will attempt to use "ipconfig" to get the local computer's MAC address.
Note that because these commands are Windows-specific, these examples will work only with Windows operating systems.
Hope this helps. Best of luck!
Kileen

Question on the new virus attack warning on the Mac
Hi everybody,
Just wondering if anyone is getting worried about the new virus attacks that are predicted on their way at the Mac according to media sources. I have Firewall on and also Stealth Mode enabled but I'm worried now if that's enough. I've looked at ClamX but that seems like it can cause other problems. MacScan seems to be good software for a decent price. Any ideas from anyone will be appreciated.
RichNo viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download from:
http://www.clamxav.com/
However, the appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
You can read more about how, for example, the OSX/DNSChanger Trojan works here:
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojanosxdnschanger.shtml
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)
A white paper has recently been published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:
http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacSweeper
On June 23, 2008 this news reached Mac users:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/
More information on Mac security can be found here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/
The MacScan application can be downloaded from here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
You can download a 30 day trail copy which enables you to do a full scan of your hard disk. After that it costs $29.95.

This was published on July 25, 2008:
Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
In light of the news net firms are being urged to apply a fix for the loop-hole before attacks by hi-tech criminals become widespread.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.
Further details here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7525206.stm
A further development was the Koobface malware that can be picked up from Facebook (already a notorious site for malware, like many other 'social networking' sites), as reported here on December 9, 2008:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_7773000/7773340.stm
You can keep up to date, particularly about malware present in some downloadable pirated software, at the Securemac site:
http://www.securemac.com/
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!
As to the current 'Conficker furore' affecting Intel-powered computers, MacWorld recently had this to say:
http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?email&NewsID=25613
Although any content that you download has the possibility of containing malicious software, practising a bit of care will generally keep you free from the consequences of anything like the DNSChanger trojan.
1. Avoid going to suspect and untrusted Web sites, especially *********** sites.
2. Check out what you are downloading. Mac OS X asks you for you administrator password to install applications for a reason! Only download media and applications from well-known and trusted Web sites. If you think you may have downloaded suspicious files, read the installer packages and make sure they are legit. If you cannot determine if the program you downloaded is infected, do a quick Internet search and see if any other users reported issues after installing a particular program.
3. Use an antivirus program like ClamXav. If you are in the habit of downloading a lot of media and other files, it may be well worth your while to run those files through an AV application.
4. Use Mac OS X's built-in Firewalls and other security features.
5. Stop using LimeWire. LimeWire (and other peer-to-peer sharing applications) are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. Everything from changing permissions to downloading trojans and other malicious software can be acquired from using these applications.
6. Resist the temptation to download pirated software. After the release of iWork '09 earlier this year, a Trojan was discovered circulating in pirated copies of Apple's productivity suite of applications (as well as pirated copies of Adobe's Photoshop CS4). Security professionals now believe that the botnet (from iServices) has become active. Although the potential damage range is projected to be minimal, an estimated 20,000 copies of the Trojan have been downloaded. -
