LACP Load Balancing Method

We have two stack of 3750-X switchs interconnected through LACP, and a CheckPoint Firewall connected to one of the stack. The Firewall use a LACP bond to connect to the 3750-X Stack. On the Cisco switches we don't use any Layer3 functionality.
Since the switch are used in Layer2 mode, can we define the a load balancing method that use IP informations ?
For example Can we change the load balancing method from src-mac to src-dst-ip ?
BRgds

  Hi,
yes you can choose the method of Load balancing in LACP:
port-channel load-balance {dst-ip | dst-mac | src-dst-ip | src-dst-mac | src-ip | src-mac}
Configure an EtherChannel load-balancing method.
The default is src-mac.
Select one of these load-distribution methods:
•dst-ip—Load distribution is based on the destination-host IP address.
•dst-mac—Load distribution is based on the destination-host MAC address of the incoming packet.
•src-dst-ip—Load distribution is based on the source-and-destination host-IP address.
•src-dst-mac—Load distribution is based on the source-and-destination host-MAC address.
•src-ip—Load distribution is based on the source-host IP address.
•src-mac—Load distribution is based on the source-MAC address of the incoming packet.

  • Load Balance method for proxy - ISA or BlueCoat

    Hi,
I would like to know that which load balance method such as src-ip, cookie or etc is most suitable for load balancing proxy servers such as ISA or Bluecoat. The Proxy will listen to many services - http, https, ftp, and etc. Thanks for the help.

The methods you mentioned are not loadbalancing technics, but stickyness features.
    Stickyness is not always necessary.
Now, for caching devices, it is good to always send users requesting a same object to a single proxy, so that the same object is not cached in all the proxies.
Therefore, the solution in this case is loadbalancing with url hashing.
For HTTPs, if you terminate SSL on the loadbalancer, you can use the same solution.
For all the other traffic, I would suggest to start with roundrobin and see after a while if it requires some adjustments or not.

  • Load Balancing Method

I want to lod balance two servers using CSS 11503. The requirement is to send all the traffic to Server1 untill it dies. Meaning that...Server2 will be sitting idle and only become active when Server 1 is not available. I am not sure which load balancing method should be used to acheive this result.
    Any suggestions !!!!!

you should use the sorry server function.
Here is a link to a sample config.

  • Best HTTP load balancing method

This is probably basic, but how satisfactory is this http load balancing method:
    service http-1
    ip address 192.168.1.10
    protocol tcp
    port 80
    keepalive type tcp
    active
    service http-2
    ip address 192.168.1.9
    protocol tcp
    port 80
    keepalive type tcp
    active
    owner http
    content web-domains
    vip address 10.0.0.1
    add service http-1
    add service http-2
    protocol tcp
    port 80
    balance leastconn
    active
    Should I rather use sticky-mask 255.255.255.255 or advanced-balance sticky-srcip?

It really depends what you are doing.
Some people will find this acceptable and for others it will just not work.
    Do you need persistency ?
To answer this question check with your webserver admin.
does this website have a shopping basket ?
Finally, changing the sticky-mask is useless if you do not have sticky-srcip. So your question should be ..or .. but .. and ..
Anyway, it all depends what is required for your website to work.
You can try this config and if you run into problem capture a sniffer trace and identify the problem to see if a configuration change is needed.

  • Help choose the appropriate etherchannel load balance method

    Hi
I have 2 network architectures :case A and case B  (found architecture below)
Case A : one server connected on the switch on each site
Case B : 3 server connected on the switch behind a router on each site
2 site are connected by 2 wireless link :each wireless link have 105 Mbps bandwith (I absolutly need the agregate bandwith 210)
Site headquarter is the principal site and site backup is use to backup data located on the principal site
I use Gbit cisco  2960 switch
I use etherchannel to agregate the 2 switch port (port 1 and port 2) where the 2 wireless link are connected
I configure src-mac for case A but all trafic is send only on one wireless link .
Please help me to choose the more appropriate load balance method to load balance traffic between the 2 link for the case A and for the case B
    Please advise
    Thanks in advance

Your Case A might be handled by port hashing, but unfortunately most Cisco platforms don't support it.
Your Case B isn't much better, as you only have 3 hosts on each side, and according to your drawing, they are behind routers, so you don't want to use MAC hashes.  If you don't have port hashing, next best choice might be src-dest-IP hashing.  Again, though, with just 3 hosts, your distribution will likely not be very balanced, especially over shorter time intervals.
To obtain best utilization of your links, you need some kind of better link bonding, such as MLPPP (unfortunately, usually won't scale to FE rates) or a hardware MUX.  Next best option, if you could route across the links, would be something like Cisco's OER/PfR which can dynamically load balance.

  • LACP/Load Balancing Question

This past weekend we replaced our Catalyst 4506 switches with a combination of Catalyst 4500-X switches (provides fiber and 10 GB connections to our closet switches and our UCS) and 2960-X switches (all other servers and printers are connected here). Our backup server has two NICs teamed into a NIC Team (port 35 and 36 on the 2960-X switch). The NIC team was set to the following:
Team Type Selection: 802.3ad Dynamic with Fault Tolerance
Transmit Load Balancing: Dest IP Address
Since we switched to the new switches we are seeing a high number of discards from our backup server on one of the ports in the NIC team. I verified the port-channel configuration on the switches and set the "port-channel load-balance" to src-dst-ip. When running the test etherchannel command from one of my servers to the backup server it responds that it would choose port 36. When I run a backup from this same source server to my backup server it chooses port 35 for everything. I would expect this if the data is coming from the same source ip to the backup server. To confirm this I added another test job from a different source IP. It still only chooses port 35.
If I "show lacp 3 counters" here's what I see:
                 LACPDUs         Marker      Marker Response    LACPDUs
Port       Sent   Recv     Sent   Recv     Sent   Recv      Pkts Err
    Channel group: 3
    Gi2/0/35    14616  12368    0      0        0      0         0
    Gi2/0/36    14628  12368    0      0        0      0         0
From this it appears the switch is pretty evenly distributing data across both channels. Am I correct? If that is true then is it a fair assumption that something on the backup server is rejecting the data on port 36 and thus causing the discards?
Just need an opinion on what might be going on to help convince people as to where the problem lies.
    Thanks.

  • Load Balancing Methods in Planning

Ware planning on Load Balancing our two web servers for performance reasons and our consultant and IT side had two different ideas of what this would mean.
Our IT side wants to us IIS and set up a Virtual Machine/IP that sits on both web servers (which are NIC card connected) thus creating the virtual entry point that would move activity to the least busy server.
Our consultant was thinking we'd have a seperate piece of HW (like CISCO or Baracuda - F5) that would perform the load balancing on it's own and direct traffic accordingly. He was not aware of an install utilizing the first method and we're wondering if this IIS solution will work or not.
We are using TOMCAT out of the box here too.
Any help is appreciated! We're toast on getting a new piece of HW in here in time for us to complete our migration but I just want to make sure we don't waste time going down a path that isn't viable.

    Hi Paul,
The bulk of the work of a Planning server is performed by the Java App Server.
To have a highly available Planning environment you will need to look at clustering Tomcat and may need to use something like BEA Weblogic instead.
Check out the Clustering EPM Web Applications in the below PDF document.

  • CSS Scalable Load Balancing Method

    Greetings All,
Looking to the brain trust here for some options on a requested load balancing schema.
I have a CSS11506 for which I need to configure some 'scalable' load balancing.
We have 2 servers configured for load balancing... we'll call the services S1 and S2.
The requirement is to have S1 to service all traffic until its related server CPU reaches 80%. Once this occurs, then traffic should start being sent to S2 for load balancing.
    How can I accomplish this?
    Thanks!
    -Adam

    Gilles,
    Thanks for the reply.
I'm not real savvy with creating scripted keep-alives from scratch.
Can you direct me to some links where I can learn more about creating such a script on the CSS?
    Thanks again!

  • 3750X Port-Channel Load-Blanace method

I have a 3750X and I'm wondering what would be the best Port-Channel Load-Balancing method would be for my network.
    switch(config)#port load ?
      dst-ip       Dst IP Addr
      dst-mac      Dst Mac Addr
src-dst-ip   Src XOR Dst IP Addr
src-dst-mac  Src XOR Dst Mac Addr
      src-ip       Src IP Addr
      src-mac      Src Mac Addr
We have a few Layer 3 VLANs: Default, Servers, Clients, and Guests.
Some of our servers are LACP bundled.
So it would be mainly clients on the one layer 3 VLAN accessing the server on the other layer 3 VLAN.
We also have a few smaller switches that are trunked and LACP bundled back to the core 3750X.
Can anyone suggest which Load-Balancing method would be best for our situation?
    Thanks!

The default load balancing method on the 3750 series is based on source-MAC address.  This usually works fine in most cases. If you change it to something different than this, it will affect all your port-channels in that switch.

  • Load Balancing Forms Services with an effective healthcheck

I am in the process of configuring two forms 11.1.2 servers running with weblogic 10.3.5 with multiple forms applications clustered across both physical servers. We are looking to load balance to the various forms applications using a hardware load balancer. Can anyone comment on their experience with setting up effective application healthchecks using either hardware or software load balancers?
For example say that we have 3 applications clustered across 2 servers with the following
    URLs:
    http://server01:7777/forms/frmservlet?config=myapp1
    http://server01:7777/forms/frmservlet?config=myapp2
    http://server01:7777/forms/frmservlet?config=myapp3
    http://server02:7777/forms/frmservlet?config=myapp1
    http://server02:7777/forms/frmservlet?config=myapp2
    http://server02:7777/forms/frmservlet?config=myapp3
We would need a checking mechanism on the load balancer that could tell if myapp2 was down on say server01 and therefore block traffic to that application yet keep traffic open for the other 2 apps on the same server.
A specific difficulty with forms is that when the database behind the application is down forms services will return an error message within a displayed error form. From the load balancer's point of view the forms services are "up". We need to find a way of detecting that the application is actually available and not just that the forms services themselves are available. To detect that the forms services are available we might normally use the status check:
    http://server01:7777/forms/frmservlet?ifcmd=status
however this will only tell use the availability of the forms services on a physical server and not whether any actual applications are available.
I am aware that f5 do a BIGIP offering that includes some Oracle Forms specific components. Can anyone comment on how they have setup Oracle Forms healthchecks using various load balancing methods. In particular if a load balancer is limited to using WGET commands to check HTTP returned content is there a way of checking a forms application's availability and if not how have other people achieved an effective healthcheck?
    Many thanks,
    Philippe

Did you ever Get this to work?
I am having some problems trying to load balance with Oracle Forms, Discover and reports Oracle Application Server Release 10g (9.0.4.0.2) and I was wondering if you could help. Has any one ever got this to work consistently? We are an ERP product written mostly in forms (904) and are trying to implement are largest customer there performance issue so we need the load balancing to work. Will also accept other recommendation as cost effective as solutions.

  • CSS and Oracle Load Balancing

    Hi,
I have CSS in single arm deployment model. I have multiple servers load balancing on this CSS on port 80 etc. Today I am trying to load balance one Oracle server but I am facing problem with it.
Real servers are accessible on port 80 without any problem but when we are trying to access the same servers on VIP we are not able to see the web page.
    real server http://192.168.17.12/irs.htm

    real server http://192.168.10.37/irs.htm
    VIP
    http://192.168.200.58/irs.htm
Below is the configuration. I can do the telnet on port 80 and I can ping the VIP IP address.
I will only put 192.168.200.58 in browser I can see the oracle page but with the full URL i am not able to see it.
Though I have other oracle servers which I have load balance with the same configuration and I can access the web page.

Same setting I am doing for other servers and working fine only for these servers I am facing problem. Curently only one server is active in the configuration.
Kindly let me know what I am missing and how to fix the problem.
I have also attached the full configuration of CSS.

    Hi,
My point of concern is that I did the same for Oracle server and this is working fine
    http://192.168.200.95/forms/frmservlet?config=tp
only when I am doing the load balancing for
    http://irs.enoc.com/irs.htm  (This is not working).
By name and by IP address both are not working.
    http://192.168.200.58/irs.htm  (This is not working).
I dont have a option for TAC case is there a a way to fix the problem by apply other load balancing method. Is there something to do with the Circut VLAN. I didnt create the Circut VLAN 17 where this server is located.
I am doing almost 8 differenceservers load balancing in this CSS.
your expert opinion will definately help me.

  • Cisco CSS 11503 Arrowpoint/Load Balance question

I am troubleshooting an issue with my 11503.  I am running version 07.40.0.04. I have it configured as follows:
      content upcadtoa-rule
        add service cadtoa-wls1-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls1-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls2-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls2-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls3-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls3-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls4-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls4-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls5-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls5-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls6-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls6-e1
        arrowpoint-cookie expiration 00:00:15:00
        protocol tcp
        port 8001
        advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
        redundant-index 2
        vip address 172.30.194.195 range 2
        arrowpoint-cookie name TOA
        active
However, the load-balancing across the servers does not seem to be doing much balancing.  One of those servers is getting hit with 5 times as much traffic as another and another server is lucky to get a connection at all.  With the cookie expiration set, one would think that this would all balance out over time.
I just came across this information from Cisco and I am wondering if it is relevant:
If you configure a balance or advanced-balance method on a content rule that requires the TCP protocol for Layer 5 (L5) spoofing, you should configure a default URL string, such as url "/*". The addition of the URL string forces the content rule to become an L5 rule and ensures L5 load balancing or stickiness. If you do not configure a default URL string, unexpected results can occur.
In the following configuration example, if you configure a Layer 3 (L3) content rule with an L5 balance method, the CSS performs L5 load balancing, but will reject UDP packets.
    content testing
    vip address 192.168.128.131
    add service s1
    balance url
    active
The balance url method is an L5 load-balancing method in which the CSS must spoof the connection and examine the HTTP GET content request to perform load balancing. The CSS rejects the UDP packet sent to this rule because a UDP connection cannot be L5. Though the CSS allows this rule configuration, its expected behavior would be more clear if you promote the rule to L5 by configuring the url "/*" command.
In the next example, if you configure an L3 content rule with an L5 advanced-balance method, L5 stickiness will not work as expected.
    content testing
    vip address 192.168.128.131
    add service s1
    advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
    active
The advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie method causes the CSS to spoof the connection, however, the CSS still marks it as an L3 rule. Thus, the CSS does not insert the generated cookie and the rule defaults to L3 stickiness (sticky-srcip). You must configure a URL like url "/*" to promote this rule to L5, ensuring that L5 stickiness works as expected.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.  The thing is not down, it is just balancing strangely causing application performance issues.
    James

    Hey James,
You will need to suspend the content rule in order to add the url statement.  This will cause a quick downtime until the content rule is activated again.  I have shown below the commands to add the statement.  Perhaps you can create your commands in a Notepad file, then paste them all in so they execute quickly to minimize your downtime:
      content MY-SITE
        vip address 10.201.130.140
        port 80
        protocol tcp
        add service MY-SERVER
        active
    CSS11503# config t
    CSS11503(config)# owner TEST
    CSS11503(config-owner[TEST])# content MY-SITE
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# url "/*"
%% Attribute may not be modified on active rule
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# suspend
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# url "/*"
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# active
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# exit
    CSS11503(config-owner[TEST])# exit
    CSS11503(config)# exit
    CSS11503# show run
      content MY-SITE
        vip address 10.201.130.140
        add service MY-SERVER
        port 80
        protocol tcp
       url "/*"       <--------
        active
    Hope this helps,
    Sean

Im looking for some advice please
The apps team have asked me about load balancing across some servers but im not that well up on it for applications
Basically we have 4 apache web servers with about 2000 clients connecting to them, they would like to load balance connections to all these servers, they all need the same DNS name etc.
what load balancing methods would I need for this, I believe they run on Linux
Would I need some sort of device, or can the servers run some software that can do this, how would it work? and how would load balancing be achieved here?
    cheers

    Carl,
What you have mentioned sounds very straightforward then everything should go well.
The ACE is a load balancer which takes a load balancing decisions based on different matching methods like matching virtual address, url, source address, etc then once the load balance decision has been taken then the ACE will load balance the traffic based on the load balance method which you have configured (if you do not configure anything then it will use the default which is "round robin"), then it will send the traffic to the servers which it has available and finally the client should get the content.
If you want to get some details about the load balancing methods here you have them:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA3_1_0/configuration/slb/guide/overview.html#wp1000976
For ACE deployments the most common designs are the following.
    Bridge Mode
    One Arm Mode
    Routed Mode
Here you have a link for Bridge Mode and a sample for that:
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Basic_Load_Balancing_Using_Bridged_Mode_on_the_Cisco_Application_Control_Engine_Configuration_Example
Here you have a link for One Arm Mode and a sample for that:
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Basic_Load_Balancing_Using_One_Arm_Mode_with_Source_NAT_on_the_Cisco_Application_Control_Engine_Configuration_Example
Here you have a link for Routed Mode and a sample for that:
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Basic_Load_Balancing_Using_Routed_Mode_on_the_Cisco_Application_Control_Engine_Configuration_Example
Then as you could see in all those links you may end up having a configuration like this:
    interface vlan 40
description "Default gateway of real servers"
      ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
      service-policy input remote-access
      no shutdown
    ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.16.1.1
    class-map match-all slb-vip
      2 match virtual-address 172.16.1.100 any
    policy-map multi-match client-vips
      class slb-vip
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance policy slb
policy-map type loadbalance http first-match slb
      class class-default
        serverfarm web
    serverfarm host web
      rserver lnx1
        inservice
      rserver lnx2
        inservice
      rserver lnx3
        inservice
    rserver host lnx1
      ip address 192.168.1.11
      inservice
    rserver host lnx2
      ip address 192.168.1.12
      inservice
    rserver host lnx3
      ip address 192.168.1.13
      inservice

  • Question Cluster/Load balancing

    Question about iplanet load balancing/Cluster:
Following discussion are based on iAS C++ engine(kcs).
We have four web servers and two iAS servers:
    Web1, Web2, Web3, Web4
    iAS1, iAS2
All machines run Solaris 8, web server is iWS4.1 SP6,
Application server is iAS6.0 SP2, and both iAS boxes have
    same hardware configuration.
    1. What's the best load balancing method for this structure?
Per Server Response Time(Web Connector Driven)
Per Component Response Time(Web Connector Driven)
    Round Robin(Web Connector Driven)
    User Defined Criteria(iAS Driven)
    2. What's the criteria for the kxs engine to choose the kcs
engine to sent request if we set Web Connector Driven
    load balancing?
    3. If we set iAS driven load balancing, what's the criteria
for the web connector used to choose kxs?
    4. We got a problem when run load testing for an AppLogic
in this cluster, one iAS CPU average usage got almost
100%, but the other one is just 70%.
We used Per Server Response Time load balancing method.
    Thanks.

it depends on the characteristics and behaviour of your application

    load balancing?
kxs always does round robin to the kjs or kcs engines. The webconnector
selects the kxs to which to send to.
    >
    3. If we set iAS driven load balancing, what's the criteria
for the web connector used to choose kxs?
as specified by your criteria in the iAS driven section.
The ias instance will send its current list of preferences for ias
intances it got from the criteria to the webconnector. This information
    is dynamic and updated constantly.

We used Per Server Response Time load balancing method.
again, this can be a valid result depending on the way your applogics
are written. Are they CPU bound, I/O bound or DB bound? Since individual
components execute differently and you specified to use the average of
those results to determine load balancing this can be a valid result
because differences in execution times of your applogics.

  • Unequal Load Balance on Etherchannel (L2/SW3400ME)

Hi, i have a problem with my L2 port-channel between 2 SW ME-3400-24TS-D (12.2(44)SE5), there is a unequal load balance and i don't know how to fixed. Should I change the load balance method?.
All four ports have the same config, except one (int fa0/1 on SW_2) that have this commands:
    MAMANIVLN1P1IRA1#SH RUN INT FA0/1 | INC hold
     hold-queue 4096 in
     hold-queue 4096 out
Should i change this hold-queue config?
Here more outputs where you can see the diference, one link has 2mb and the other link has 60mb,, that's a big diference, i would like to know how to solve this:
    SW_1#sh int fa0/9 | inc (Desc|rate)
      Description: !!!!!! HACIA SW_2 !!!!!
      Queueing strategy: fifo
      5 minute input rate 2088000 bits/sec, 2065 packets/sec
      5 minute output rate 25000 bits/sec, 46 packets/sec
    SW_1#sh int fa0/10 | inc (Desc|rate)
      Description: PORTCHANNEL10 HACIA SW_2
      Queueing strategy: fifo
      5 minute input rate 1905000 bits/sec, 1948 packets/sec

      Queueing strategy: fifo
      5 minute input rate 63567000 bits/sec, 6114 packets/sec
      5 minute output rate 1935000 bits/sec, 1976 packets/sec
    more outputs...
    SW_1#sh etherchannel load-balance
    EtherChannel Load-Balancing Configuration:

Total Mac Addresses for this criterion: 297
    SW_2#SH MAC ADDress-table INTerface po10 | inc Total
Total Mac Addresses for this criterion: 66
In advance thanks for the help.

Normally it will fairly well balance the traffic . There is no way to make sure each channel is exactly the same utilization wise . You can look at how it is load balanced and make a change from say mac to ip address if it looks like you aren't getting the balance you want . It would be very rare that you are going to fill one port on the channel without filling the rest almost the same .Exceptions would be if you most of your traffic is headed to one place like a certain server , even then if you used ip addresses in both directions as the load balance I think it would balance out pretty good. If it got to that point where one link was almost filled you would have to think about adding another port to the channel . This is a real good page http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk213/technologies_tech_note09186a0080094714.shtml
