LAN Phy or WAN Phy?

Hi All,
Can someone please clarify the difference between 10Gbps LAN Phy and WAN Phy?
Is there is a preference between using either/or?

Hello,
We can think of 10GE LAN as a usual Ethernet we used to see.
10GE WAN uses SONET/SDH  framing instead and hence can be directly connected to OC-192c/STM-64 interfaces at a carrier network. For diagnostics 10GE WAN PHY makes use of the SONET overhead bits to detect :
- Loss of signal
- Coding violations
- Framing errors/ loss of frame
- Errored seconds
- Severely errored seconds
- Loss of synchronization (not needed) •             Same Error/ performance monitoring
- B1, B2, B3
- J0, J1
Same Defect/ Alarms
- FEBE
- RDI
- AIS

  • 10 Gigabit Ethernet Wan PHY vs LAN PHY

    hello,
Is it possible to connect a 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN PHY client interface (12xxx or 76xx) on a 10 Gigabit Ethernet WAN PHY port of provider équipment (Nortel 5200) ?
what about the existence of 10 Gigabit Ethernet WAN PHY interface on 12xxx or 76xx plateform ?
    thank you in advance

The Cisco ONS 15454 MSTP DWDM system offers a a 10Gbps transponder card supporting a 10GE LAN PHY client interface.

I do not know if the Nortel 5200 DWDM system supports LAN PHY interfaces on their transponders.

  • WIFI for LAN, 3G for WAN

I need my ipad to connect to a wireless access point that is not connected to the internet.
The Wifi connection is established fine and I can access other devices on that LAN.
While on that LAN, the ipad cannot access WAN sites through 3G.
Is there a way I could have wifi on lan while accessing wan with 3g?

My wifi access point is not connected to anything. I did NOT connect it to any other wifi network.
I have an ethernet arduino board connected to the wifi AP with an ethernet cable.
My iPad and iPhone are setup to connect to the my isolated wifi network.
Every component above is setup to use static IP addresses.
My iPhone and iPad do not specify any router IP.
My iPhone and iPad both can access WAN.
If I turn off 3G, they cannot access WAN.
Both can connect to the router (admin) and to the arduino ethernet.

  • How to chage from LAN ip to WAN ip

The probelem is that I want to change from my LAN ip to WAN ip(whatsmyip.org) because it is easier for me to manage my server. What can I do?
    More details:
My current local IP is 192.168.x.x
And the WAN ip is 123.53.x.x
Problem: I want to change from 192.168.x.x to 123.53.x.x

  • Retain the LAN, Disable the WAN

Is there a way to maintain LAN services, but disable (for a few days, anyway) the computer's/system's attempts to access the Internet over that same network?
My DSL service is temporarily down, and the telecom is testing it remotely from their end. That means I've had to open portions of the modem's firewall to allow them access--and that means I don't want to leave it connected to the router. I can still transfer files across the network, and can still access my NAS; but my Mac Pro, and all its applications, are used to finding an Internet connection through that router, and now that WAN services are unavailable, some apps drag when opened, and some just freeze altogether.
Is there a way to modify my system (such as a temporary network location) so that the LAN still works, but which will stop looking for Internet access?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jess

No, the router (Linksys RVS4000) and modem (Zyxel 660R) are two separate pieces of hardware. There's an Ethernet port on the back of the router for connecting the modem, but, as I wrote, I've disconnected that cable for security reasons. And the modem will have to be reconnected to the router (eventually) to have network-wide Internet access.
Then you are all set. The router will allow your LAN to work, sans the internet connection and there is zero security issue with anything concerning the modem.
I would advise you to turn off the WiFi on the modem, unless your ISP requires it to be on.

  • IPv4 LAN over IPv6 WAN

With IPv6 I am most concerned today with receiving an IPv6 address from my ISP for my Spoke networks.  I don't have plans to convert my Spoke LANs  or Internal application servers to IPV6 anytime soon.  Reviewing all the books and technical documentation out there, I don't see discussion about how to get my IPv4 traffic tunneled through the Internet via an IPv6 carrier, a 4to6 tunnel.  Currently I'm running DMVPN which appears to support IPv6 tunnels, Native and 6to4.  Can anyone provide direction or expertise on how to get IPv4 traffic between Enterprise locations with ISPs move to IPv6 addressing?
    Thanks..

    Ryan,
If this is a question of connecting LAN in different branches.
The decently scalable option is GRE (with DMVPN being the neatest).
On top ASA supports IPv4 in IPv6 IPsec (to other ASAs at this point).
You might have a bit more challanges if you want to provide access to non-intrernal resources, Internet, partner sites without IPv4 on WANs.

  • PC to OSX Server works on LAN, not on WAN, Mac works on both

So the subject pretty much says it. I've got VPN set up, my macbook pro can connect on LAN and WAN. My PCs can connect on LAN, but it times out over WAN.
    Thoughts?

There are reports of VPN issues with AEBS devices around the forums, including some reports with the just-released 7.5.2 firmware. I don't run that configuration, so I'm not in a position to replicate that here. ([Here is an old thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4046689], and also see [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2312455].)
Make sure your Windows (XP?) VPN is configured for NAT traversal. IIRC, that's not the default for the Windows VPNs, and Microsoft had some notes published on setting up VPNs from Windows. (I don't have a Windows box handy to test.) That's what port 4500 is for.
Try both PPTP and L2TP, too. (You have both open, so try both paths.) Ensure the server is set for both PPTP and L2TP, too.
The AEBS are good home WiFi routers and can serve admirably as wireless access points (APs; what Apple calls "bridge mode"), but they're not particularly intended as gateway devices for servers. I'd generally recommend getting yourself a VPN-capable server-grade network gateway, as that gets NAT out of the equation entirely, and it means you can connect to the LAN without needing the server to be functioning, and it means the server isn't fielding and processing and rejecting any (unauthorized) VPN connection traffic that might arrive.

  • LAN but no WAN anymore

    Hi
I have a problem accessing internet from my Mac mini after a move. I recently moved and started to use a router provided by my ISP (Thomson TG789vn). Now my Mac mini gets an local IP address but can't get on the Internet. I have turned off wireless and use cable. As a twist I have wired windows vista machines and wired a linux based NAS (QNap) that all get on internet. Also all wireless devices (Windows Vista, MacBook Air, iPhones, iPads etc) work as expected. It must be some routing setting on the Mini but it looks like it uses the correct gateway and DNSes (I also tried google DNS without success). Any ideas?
    Best regards

  • Downloads work on LAN, but not WAN

File uploads and downloads work fine on the local network, but from outside the company files can be uploaded but not downloaded. This would seem like a firewall isssue, but to argue it I need to know what protocol and ports are being used.
A complication is that the System Admin didn't want to set up another server for access to the outside, so he used an exitsting server that was already set up. He put Apache proxy on that server and pointed it to the database server. It works alright locally so should work from outside too, but if someone kowns of configuration issues I would be grateful to hear about it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Vern Shellman

    Luis,
The error is just "Network Timeout -- server taking too long", etc. It takes no more than 10 seconds locally for the download window to appear, so I doubt if the minute or so it takes to timeout on the outside is due to slow response of the server. I've hit the "Try Again" button on the timeout page repeatedly and that hasn't helped. So you think it's all port 80, huh? Since everything works on the local network I'm inclined to think it has to be firewall issue. I guess I'll be talking to the firewall guys next. Thanks for the insight. I appreciate the response.

  • Problem with Jabber and file transfers WAN - LAN-Users - a solution!

    Hi,
I read a lot of messages about problems with file transfers between iChat-Users, if one (or both) are behind a NAT.
I had this problem to and found an easy solution:
    My situation
iChat-Server behind a Netgear ProSafe FireWall. I opened the needed Ports including Port 7777 (the Port for the iChat-proxy (proxy65).
The iChat-Server is configured to host the domain "server.ourdomain.com" (as an example).
This address can be reached from the LAN and also from the WAN-side.
From the LAN-side the DNS redirects to 192.168.1.1, from the WAN this domain redirects to our official IP-address (the WAN-IP of the FireWall).
I tried nearly all kinds of mentioned solutions, but nothing helped.
The really easy solution is: I just added our official IP to the "Hosted Domains" in the iChat-section of Server-Admin.
After that change, the transfers are made via the proxy65 of iChat-Server. The transfers are shown in the log /private/var/jabberd/log/proxy65.log.
I think, that the other posters who also have this kind of problem are working in a similar setup (domain name of server is used from the LAN AND the WAN-side with different IP-addresses (LAN-IP & WAN-IP).
This solution will only work, if the WAN-IP is a fixed address.

Until the introduction of file promises in AIR Athena, it  has never been possible to drag remote files out of an AIR application.

  • LAN WAN settings on Pixma MX922

On my Pixma MX922 I can set either WAN active or LAN active, not both at the same time. I have one desktop - LAN, 1 laptop WAN only, 2 tablets WAN only. Two printers, one is a LaserJet TCP/IP only, the other is the Pixma MX922.
Any body know how I can print to either printer from the desktop - where I work a lot, and others can print from their laptop or tablet to either printer?
    Router is Archer C7 801.11ac/n/b
Or if a different Canon Inkjet printer can activate WAN and LAN at the same time I would like to know. Thanks
[Email address removed per forum guidelines.]

    Hi Pakeha,
You can install the printer on your laptop and connect your tablets wirelessly using the wireless setup method, then install the printer on your desktop computer, also choosing the wireless connection method during setup, even if the desktop computer is connected to your router via an ethernet cable.  Should you need assistance installing the printer wirelessly, please call or email us using one of the methods on the Contact Us page for further assistance.

  • Marvell Lan driver, X86Config quesions

    Hi,
I am completely new to solaris, though I do have SOME linux experience(enough at least to feel brave enough for solaris). I installed the software, I even have a sysadmin user created that can access all the linux apps I installed through his PATH, but I still have a ton of questions that will be really easy to answer.
Where is XF86Config, so I can set it up to use my NVidia 6600 card?
Other than the marvell_other.zip from Asus (who I can't download from because their website reports to much use) are there any other drivers out there for the Marvell 88E1111 Giga LAN PHY in solaris. I also have another pci ethernet adapter though Im not sure what kind it is because I havn't used it in 6 years. Can anyone help?
It would also be usefull to know how to install drivers, I am familiar with driver use and installation in linux but not solaris. Other than those problems I have seen nothing wrong with the os, its quite awesome in fact.
Thanks for your time, and I appreciate that its alot of questions, though some are simple
    thanks

Ok downloaded the driver for the yukon, which I don't think covers my chipset. I looked the prtconf -d and I didn't see anything different from before. So now the question would be how can I tell if it did work? and if it didn't can anyone help me out with suggestions about what to do?
    thanks

  • Win XP Home on M100 (no recovery cd) - lan driver intel 82562ET

    Hello,
    According to http://nl.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/selected_product_option.jsp?service=NL&ACTION=PRIN T_WITH_BACK&PRODUCT_ID=98584&DISC_MODEL=0
I have an Intel NIC onboard (8256ET to be presise).
I do not have a recovery cd.
I have Win XP Home installed and need to install the latest drivers so Windows fully understands what's on-board.
I want to update the network NIC driver but the suggested download from http://nl.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=NL
does not contain the correct intel lan drivers! The two closest matches (in type-numbering) do not install properly :/
So - how do I get the LAN @ work on my (new:) Toshiba Portg M100 1,4Ghz?

    Hello
I have found out that your unit has:
Type of Network I/F Chip Intel ICH4-M integrated LAN cont & LAN(PHY) is Intel Kinnereth (82562ET). Network driver integrated on imager on recovery CD is Intel PRO/100 VE V.6.4.14. This driver can be used for WXP Home and Pro.
If you dont have recovery media do you have at least Tools & Utilities CD?
This driver you can find under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp and after download check Readme.txt file.

  • VRF Best Practice: LAN only VRF, Mgmt VRF, Global Routing table or VRF?

I am setting up a routed LAN (not a WAN) environment on two 6500 switches (sup-720). My goal is to create 32 routed environments separated by logical firewalls (multi-context ASA's). So I want a “core” router in each environment, and don't want to buy 32 pairs of 6500's-sorry Cisco.
Each of these environments are tied together by a core routing environment, running on the same pair of 6500's. No WAN MPLS is going on and I am trying to use VRF for each of the routed environments core router. The management functions of the 6500 shall run off the VRF Core router and ip range (the one that ties all the other VRF's together. Here is a simple diagram:
    VRF1
    ||
    FW1

    VRFCOR
    ||
    FW2
    ||
    VRF2
So to go from VRF1 to VRF2, you traverse two firewalls and VRFCOR.
Several questions related to this design:
    1) Am I nuts to use VRF's in this application?
    2) Is there a better choice than VRF's to do what I want?
    3) Should VRFCOR be the global routing table (IOW, not a VRF)? Or should be its own VRF? Another way to ask this is: Shall a router ever run entirely in VRF tables, or should there be at least one global table in use?
    4) Are there problems with any management protocols on a VRF, such as NTP, AAA, SNMP, LOGGING, TELNET? Or have all those been worked out?
    5) Any other suggestions?
    TIA, Will

VRF is suited for such kind of an application. Refer to URL http://cisco.com/application/pdf/en/us/guest/netsol/ns171/c649/ccmigration_09186a0080851cc6.pdf to get an idea about the

  • Does the WAN port in client mode on the Airport Express?

On an Airport Express (2012 version, 802.11n), has anyone tried the following configuration? Is the WAN port active in client mode? Do you have any suggestions on this or similar configurations?
I am trying to use Airplay to stream music to two Klipsch G-17 speakers. As I have discovered and also documented by Apple on their web page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4587 in the section
"Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network as part of a legacy WDS or Extended Network", this is true "Due to the overhead required for this configuration, you may expect AirPlay drop-outs such as intermittent loss of audio."
    Configuration now:
All Airport Expresses are the 2012 802.11n version with a LAN and a WAN port.
There is one Airport Express in a home basement. It is connected to an Internet connection. This Internet connection goes into this home basement.
There is a second Airport Express on the second floor of this home.
Now, both Airport Expresses connect fine with the "extend network" option. There is wifi coverage throughout this home. All works fine until Airplay is used to stream music to these two Klipsch G-17 speakers. There are intermittent and persistent pauses. I am experiencing the what Apple documented in this kb article. I am not able to connect the two Airport Expresses with an ethernet cable. I cannot run a cable from the basement to the second floor.
Has anyone tried this following configuration? Or is there a different configuration that would work, and if so, could you provide the configuration details?
    1. Connect the first Airport Express via client mode to the second, second floor Airport Express.
    2. Set the network default gateway to the first, basement Airport Express.
The attempt is to eliminate the extended network, with its Airplay dropouts. And allow access to the Internet via the wifi network.
    - end -

If the Express joins a wireless network wirelessly, in other words its WAN port isn't connected to anything, the correct way to connect a wired client to it is by using its LAN port.
I don't know what would happen if you were to connect a wired client to its WAN port instead — it's just not supposed to be used for that purpose. It won't permanently break anything if you were to try it though. If you were, the worst that would occur is that your network would become unresponsive as packets continuously traverse its WAN port in a circular fashion, which might require that you power down your router to reset your whole network.
If you are already using your Express's LAN port and you need another, the way to provide more ports is to purchase an inexpensive ($10 or so) switch. Connect it to the LAN port and as many other pieces of equipment as the switch's available number of ports.
You're correct about the first generation with the single Ethernet port. It could be used in either capacity depending on its configuration.
