LAP 1142n-E-k9

I have a issue with 1142n.
If I start from 15 sessions per AP then it becomes a very costly affair. Because there are almost 20.000 student.
20,000 students * 60% concurrent use divided by 15 = 800 APs.
Can you help me what is a realistic number of sessions on this AP? What is max concurrent connections on this AP?
Thanks and Krgds.

This is how I see it... You need to first off decide who will be accessing the wireless and what traffic you will be allowing. I say this because when I have worked on implementations for schools in the past and current, the number of AP's required has grown. If you are allowing student access and or guest access, you have to be worried about uploads and downloads. How I see it now is that you need to look at density. Before, you count the number of students, now you must look at each person having at least 2-4 devices. I have returned to schools a few years later where they have an AP in every classroom or even one AP for every two classrooms. With the newer WLC code it does have a maximum client association of 200, but you need to plan for x number of devices per user on that area. A larger classroom can peg that 200 association limit. The 25 users per AP is really for throughput and its an average. I have seen 40+ on an AP when users are using it for web and email with no issues. I have seen in marketing companies where we had max 5 connection be the limit due to upload and downloads of lager image/video files with 'N' access points.
So try to understand the environment now... What do the users want to use the wireless for and how many wireless devices per user will be allowed on the network. Will you have guest access only. Mobile device count and applications being used is very important to know.
My 2 cent:)

I had some search, and the new discovery cause, might be that the AP didnt know what WLC do associate, in a multi-controller environment. This is not the case. I only have one WLC in the same management vlan.
2st-The Radius server is beeing related in the logs as been deactivated. I raise the server time-out on Radius configuration option, but it still continues to do it.

  • AIR-LAP-1142N-E-K9 unexpected power offs

Hi we have two seperate Cisco wireless networks both based around the same infrastructure.
Cisco 5508 WLC/s running 7.4.100 Firmware in our datacentre, with AIR-LAP-1142N-E-K9 LAPS distributed at site offices.
This infrastructure has been running well until recently when we have had a spate of the LAPS appearing to power off.
The LAP appears to be off with no LED status light as if it has been powered off, but the power supplies are still connected and the LAPS are often warm to the touch as if drawing power even when they have been "off" for a couple of days.
Unplugging the power supply (at the LAP) and re-applying brings the LAP back on.
The LAPS involved all used the recommended Cisco manufactured power supplies as there was no POE/power injector infrastructure.
The LAPS vanish from the WLC as if disconnected, without any apparent errors in the WLC logs.
There are no crash logs for the LAPS which have powered off.
Console output from a LAP which has powered off on startup just shows the AP coming back from a "cold start".
LAPS operate normally after restart, but after avariable period, typically 2-7 days will power off again.
This is happening across multiple sites, to LAPS connected to different WLCs.
Has anyone seen this issue before?

    Gareth,
Just want to make sure you are using a power brick/power injector.  Can you please confirm?
Had issues with 7.4 when I noticed that some of my APs, running in PoE, would suddenly get "lost".  They would suddenly reboot and they wouldn't negotiate PoE properly.  I had to manually shut down the ports for at least 5 seconds.  If I don't leave it off for that long the APs simply won't boot up.
Ever since I've moved to 7.5, I haven't seen this happen.
There is a well-known bug, can't seem to find it, about 1140 and WLC firmware 7.4.  If I remembered correctly, the bug describes what you are seeing.
You may want investigate in using 7.5.

  • Problems with LAP-1142n booting

    Hi,
I recently installed about 40 LAP-1142n access points fresh out of the box in a new elementary school. All but 5 of the AP's were able to join the controller and were set to function in H-Reap mode. The AP's that didn't join seem to be stuck in the boot process and the LED is coontinuously blinking green. I can leave them in that state all night and the next day it's still blinking green. Powering it down and bringing it back up has no effect.
All AP's are connected to C3750X POE switches and the switchports are all trunked and have the native vlan set, so all 40 have identical settings. Is it possible that I have 5 that are bad out of the box or is there something that I can do to fix this problem? Has anyone seen this before?
Thanks for any help you may be able to give me.

Have the cable vendor check wiring scheme and repunch down the cables at each end.
No need.  The APs are connected to 3750X.  To verify if you have a potential cable defect one has to run the 3750X's built-in TDR test.  Works like a charm (much to the annoyance of the cable people!).

  • Lap 1142N not joining WLC2106

    Hi,
I have a 1142N which does not join the WLC when connected via a 2960 switch. When I connect a different lap 1142N to the same port on the same switch using the same cables, it does join the lap to the WLC. And when I connect the first lap directly to the WLC it also works fine.
Resetting the failing lap does not fix the problem. All software levels on the lap are the same.
Anyone an idea what could be wrong?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Jeroen

thnx for your support so far.
All the AP's are the same, AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9 v05. I have two AP's which work fine when connected via the 2960 therefore I assume that the switch, wlc, vlan and dhcp configuration is fine. The thirth one is giving me some challenges ;-)
Note: the non working AP is only not working when connected via de 2960, it is working fine when directly connected to the WLC2106.
@David, where can i find the regulatory domain setting?

  • LAP 1142N "Radio disabled due to PoE" after upgrade to 7.6.120

Recently, we upgraded our 5508 wireless controllers from 7.4.110.0 to 7.6.120.0.
One AP (AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9) doesn't work now.
Both radios are stuck in state 'reset':
    AP#sh int dot11Radio 0 | inc Dot11Radio0
Dot11Radio0 is reset, line protocol is down
It seems to be a PoE issue:
    AP#sh controllers dot11Radio 0
    Radio disabled due to PoE
This 1142N is connected to a HP switch (model 3800 with 802.3af/802.3at support). It did work on this switch several months before this upgrade and it works if connected to Cisco switch (Cat 6513).
We didn't upgrade the switch firmware or change its configuration.
The PoE status from the switch CLI:
PoE    | Power  Power    Alloc Alloc Actual Config   Detection   Power Pre-std
Port   | Enable Priority By    Power Power  Type     Status      Class Detect
      ------ + ------ -------- ----- ----- ------ -------- ----------- ----- ------
      21     | Yes    low      lldp  33 W  7.8 W           Delivering  3     off
Other APs (80 3602 connected to HP8212zl switches) do work without any problem.
Any idea how to solve this?

After updating to 7.6.120 we've noticed that some of our AP's wouldn't  come up. After looking in the switch's logs I found this
chassis: Ports  PoE usage has exceeded threshold of 80%.
The power drawn is 117w (show power-over-ethernet).
When I use the following command: show power-over-ethernet brief I get this:
PoE   | Power  Power    Alloc Alloc Actual Configured  Detection   Power Pre-std
Port  | Enable Priority By    Power Power  Type        Status      Class Detect
      ----- + ------ -------- ----- ----- ------ ----------- ----------- ----- ------
      1     | Yes    low      lldp  17 W  7.0 W              Delivering  3     off
      2     | Yes    low      lldp  17 W  7.0 W              Delivering  3     off
      3     | Yes    low      lldp  17 W  6.8 W              Delivering  3     off
      4     | Yes    low      lldp  17 W  7.1 W              Delivering  3     off
      5     | Yes    low      lldp  17 W  7.0 W              Delivering  3     off
      6     | Yes    low      lldp  17 W  6.9 W              Delivering  3     off
      7     | Yes    low      lldp  17 W  6.8 W              Delivering  3     off
      8     | Yes    low      lldp  17 W  6.7 W              Delivering  3     off
      9     | Yes    low      lldp  17 W  6.9 W              Delivering  3     off
      10    | Yes    low      usage 17 W  0.0 W              Disabled    3     off
Port 10 is where the missing AP is on.
How is it possible that after the update to 7.6.120 the AP won't work anymore?

  • Low Bandwith, WLC 5508 and LAP 1142N, please help !

    Hello Everyone
    For the Environment:
    - I have a WLC 5508 With a license up to 100 AP, at the Point there are 39 AP connected.
    - The WLC is connected with 8x 1Gbit/s, as a Trunk ==> 2 Members of 3750 Switches Stack ( 4gig and 4 gig)
    - The AP are connected to diferent 2960s with an Uplink ( 3 Gbit/s)  to the 3750 Switches
    - There are max. 12 AP on each 2960s
    - The AP are powered over Ethernet
    The AP:
    - it runs a/b/g/n and on 2,4 Ghz i schould have 300 mbit/s as for the 5 Ghz it schould also run 300mbit /s
    - the Ap has an uplink of 1 Gbit/s
    The clients:
    - have a intel Wifi link 5300 AGN Card
    To the Problem:
    - if i connect to one AP, and the Signal strength is High, i get an upload rate of max. 6-8Mbyte/s.
and i am the only Person uploading.
if i upload from 3 clients the same data from the same spot to the same target i get 2-3 Mbyte/s per client.
if connect to the same target and run over ethernet cable fom the same spot, i get an upload of 70 -85 Mbyte/s.
    Question:
    - Why am i having these Bandwith problems ??

    Thanks Scott,
I understand what you are mentioning, and i really didnt do it yet.
I realize that the primary controller was not configured on the

Is this mandatory for a 1 controller only ?
No mather what the manual say, after that the AP is rebooting 2 mins in 2 mins... with the same kind of messages.
The interface on the switch is getting a few input errors and the same numbers of crc... but are so few...
Next step ... i will change it to another one's place/pathing cable.
Regarding the Radius messages... any ideas ?
I'm already on 30 sec's of server timeout.

  • LAP 1142N-A-K9 without WITHOUT wireless controller?

is it possible to connect these directly to a POE enabled switch without the wireless controller?

Yes, but if you want to use it for wireless, then you need to convert this to Autonomous & configure it for wireless.
    http://mrncciew.com/2012/10/20/lightweight-to-autonomous-conversion/
    http://mrncciew.com/2013/12/13/ap-conversion-using-mode-button/
As long as you have required image (k9w7..) you can convert it using one of below methods.
Then you can apply basic config like this on the AP & connect it to DHCP configured switch port
    conf t
    hostname <AP_HOSTNAME>
    dot11 ssid <SSID_NAME>
    authentication open
    authentication key-management wpa version 2
    guest-mode
    wpa-psk ascii <SSID_PASSWORD>
    interface Dot11Radio0
    encryption mode ciphers aes-ccm
    ssid <SSID_NAME>
    no shutdown
    interface Dot11Radio1
    channel width 40-above
    encryption mode ciphers aes-ccm
    ssid <SSID_NAME>
    no shutdown
    interface BVI1
    ip address dhcp

  • Multiple Web Auth Pages

I have looked through the forum and think that I have found the answer to my question but I just need confirmation of my thoughts.
We are using a 5508 WLAN controller running software ver 7.2.110.0 and LAP 1142n AP's.
What I would like to do is to configure multiple guest WLANS for each of our regional offices. Each of these WLANS needs to be configured with a Web Auth page relevant to the office location. My question is this, can I have a Web Auth page for each location or just 2, the default internal page and 1 customised page?
    Thanks for any help.

  • AP requirement

    Hi guys,
I been using 1142n Autonomous several times.
Now i have new requirement to setup 12 LAP 1142n, using a WLC.
Can suggest what model of WLC should i choose?? About 30 users, in a cargo warehouse invironment.
Now it is a good time for me to learn & play around with WLC.
What else should i need in order for LAP & WLC to work??

You can order the 2504 to support up to 5, 15, 25 or 50 lightweight access points. Looks like the 15 will work for you.

  • Cisco WLC 5508 V 7.0.116.0 Help

I have a WLC 5508, that has been working with AIR LAP 1522 AG-E-K9 and AIR LAP 1142N E K9 access points. I have deployed two
AIR-CAP1552E-A-K9 AP's on the WLC. I had to upgrade to Version 7.0.116.0, and had to set the country code to US ( Was ZA). The good news is that on US country code the new 1552's works great.
My problem now is to get the existing 1522 and 1142 AP's to work in conjunction with the 1552's on US country code.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You in advance.

    George:
Multiple country codes are not supported for MESH APs.
You can only choose one country if you are using MESH APs whatever the model is.
If you have MESH APs with multiple country regulatories I think the only way to go is to replace your APs so all of them to be under same regulatory.
Features Not Supported on Mesh NetworksThese controller features are not supported on mesh networks:
    Multi-country support
Load-based CAC (Mesh networks support only bandwidth-based, or static, CAC.)
High availability (fast heartbeat and primary discovery join timer)
    EAP-FASTv1 and 802.1X authentication
    EAP-FASTv1 and 802.1X authentication
    Locally significant certificate
    Location-based services

  • Subject: FlexConnect compatibility with Access Point

Subject: FlexConnect compatibility with Access Point
    Summary: Hi,
We have today one Cisco 5508 and those access point on remote sites
    o CISCO AIR-LAP-1131AG-E-K9
    o CISCO AIR-LAP-1231G-E-K9
    o CISCO AIR-LAP-1142N-E-K9
We plan to use redundancy on the controller and implement Flexconnect on the remote site. What we need to know is if I can implement Flexconnect on all actual access point - I think it is possible on 1142N + 1131G but do not know on 1231AG - is it correct or I'm wrong
We plan to install the latest SW version for 5508 controller.
    Thank you
    Jean

    Here is what is supported
Note All features discussed in this chapter apply to indoor (1040, 1140, 1250, 1260, 3500) and outdoor mesh access points (1500 series) unless noted otherwise. Mesh access point or MAP is hereafter used to refer to both indoor and outdoor mesh access points.

  • Lightweight AP convert to Autonomous

    Hi all,
    Here is the scenario:
    1. I have Air-LAP-1142n
    2. Don't have controller
    3. The Air-LAP-1142n doesn't have power adapter. Instead I used PoE switch (SG300-10MP) for power.
    4. I can download the Autonomous IOS.
Question is, can it be downgrade to Autonomous?? My concern is without the power adapter can it be done??
    Thanks

Yes, it will work.  Read the proceedure below:

  • The correct way...

    Hello guys,
I have the next situation, 9 LAPs 1142N, i wish to convert them to autonomous, it seems that there is a 2 ways, with a simple copy tftp flash: commands and force them to charge the IOS.default  image(holding the mode button), what is the correct way??
I used the first one (copy tftp flash and etc commands) decompressing the winrar file downloaded (c1140-k9w7-tar.124-25d.JA1) and just selecting the .JA file inside, then using the boot system command, but when a try to use the browser appears with out menus! buttons and etc options!, I supose that I need to charge ALL winrar file, but how? some suggestion??

  • 1142N NON_CISCO-NO_CDP_RECEIVED with 3560 switch

I thought the 3560 switches, the 8 port and 24 port are 802.3af standard switches?  When I connect 1142N radios to them I get the no cdp error and the radios are disabled. I have 17 of these that I converted to LAP, and I got the issue both before and after upgrading to LAP from AP.  It's not like I disabled CDP on the switches.

I may have found the problem. I thought I had initially connected to a switchport that was just setup as a switchport access vlan, with no other configurations on it, and after looking at the port found it was a trunk port, which should work, and does for the other AP's I worked with, but not the 1142N.
I took one of the other AP's that is connected to the test switch I am using to setup the WLC and AP's and connected that to one of the unconfigured ports, with default settings and the radios both powered up and I saw CDP neighbor detail,
I removed spanning-tree portfast from the trunk port, and reconnected the AP to that port, I saw it negotiated full power, but I dont see neighbor information. I had to console in and do a no shut on dot11radio 0 for it to come up on all 3 of them.
I went back and pulled that new one out of the box and reconnected to the interface I used before after removing portfast, still had the same problem, then removed the trunk configuration, and rebooted. Now I see
    *Mar  1 00:14:19.266: %CDP_PD-2-POWER_LOW: All radios disabled - NEGOTIATED WS-C3560-8PC
    Fa0/6     auto   on         14.5    AIR-LAP1142N-A-K9   3     15.4
I took one of the other AP's that I boxed up and connected it to the same port, this was a converted AP to LAP.
    Fa0/6     auto   on         15.4    AIR-LAP1142N-A-K9   3     15.4
Futher puzzlement, plugged that last AP into the test switch which is setup to mimic a remote location with trunk ports for FlexConnect, and after the radio powered up, and joined the controller, saw this.

Why would radio 0 be admin down? It is enabled on the WLC.  I went into the AP and did a no shut on it too.  Not sure what is going on with this, never ran into this sort of issue before.
