Laptop Replacement Question - Would appreciate advice!

Hi Guys,
After having issues with my new Macbook Pro applecare told me i would be recieving a replacement, and then sent me shipping labels through email.
Now im just wondering what i have to give back to apple, i bought,
15.4" Macbook Pro Unibody 2.93 GHz with 4 Gigs of Ram
Apple Care
iLife Preinstalled
Along with that i have my copy of MacOSX, the power adapter, all the instruction books and manuals and the original box
So what out of all this do i have to ship back, i know i can keep apple care and iLife, but will they ship me a brand new laptop in the original box with all the accessories or will i have to keep all my accessories?

Hi Almeida5,
I take it they're replacing it with one of the current models? Because currently there isn't a 2.93GHz MBP, so did you confirm that you'd be receiving a 3.06GHz MBP?
I'll agree with what everyone else said... you need to contact Apple. Even if you call and ask to speak with someone else, I'm sure they can see the agent's case notes that you're working with on the replacement. Even another person at Apple would be in a better position to answer this question than anyone of us.
With that being said, I had a unit replaced a few years ago. The only thing that they required back was the unit itself. I didn't have to send any of accessories, software, cabling, etc. Now, they certainly preferred I did (in the box) but it wasn't critical.
iLife '09 comes pre-installed in all brand new computers from Apple, so that'll be the same. Did you mean iWork '09?
Regarding Applecare, they don't "just transfer" it over to a new unit. There's an extra process that occurs that you need to agree to regarding the terms. You can get a pro-rated refund for the remainder of the plan or have the remainder of the plan rolled over to the new machine (there'd be a loss of time coverage).
Again... the next best course of action, really the only course of action, is to get on the horn with Apple.

  • Helping my Mom rebuild.. Would appreciate advice from the Credit Masters :)

Greetings everybody!  I am posting here to try and get some advice from people who may have been in our shoes, or from those who know a lot about credit and how it works. I am helping my mom rebuild her credit, let me provide some backstory. My mom used to have amazing credit (800+ FICO). Around 2006, my parents divorced. At that time, they had a mortgage through Chase for our old home. IIRC, the mortgage was in my mother's name with my father as secondary (my mom's amazing credit was how they got the mortgage). The court ordered that the mortgage was to become 100% of my father's responsibility, payments and all. My dad was to pay the mortgage, and my mother and I were to list the house for sale and move out. Well, to be blunt - my dad was a jack*** and was purposely 30-90 days late on multiple payments. Even though my dad was legally responsible for payments, my mom's name was attached to the mortage. I'm sure you see where I'm going with this... her amazing credit crumbled down to a 445 FICO. Yikes. My mom knew she needed to rebuild. She desperately needed a car as ours was mysteriously sabotaged... So she purchased a used 2003 Ford in early 2006. The interest rate wasn't pretty.. 24.3% through Americredit (AKA GM Financial). She knew she would get shafted until she rebuilt, so she bit the bulllet and took it. We paid that loan off 2 years or so early sometime around 2008. Around 2010 or so, we fought the credit bureaus and were able to wipe all of the late payment marks my dad did on the mortgage off of her credit reports.  We've slowly been building ever since. We were doing great. Around 2013, her FICO was around 715, with individual bureaus reporting 690-725. Here is where things started to go slightly downhill. In late 2013, my mom became severely injured. She had multiple surgeries and was taken off of work for the remainder of the year.  In October 2013, she applied for a Barclaycard Visa via Apple and was approved for $1,500. My mom wasn't getting disability or anything like that, so we started doing the worst thing possible (but our only option)... living off of CCs. Her balances got sky high... but she consolidated them into a loan through her credit union in 2014. All CCs were paid off, we only had the loan. That was paid off too that year. That spring (2014), Barclaycard gave her an automatic CLI to $3000. Capital One gave her an auto CLI to $1500. Right as she went to go back to work, some post-surgery complications popped up and the doctors have had her off work ever since. We started living off the CCs again... balances got sky high, this time no money to consolidate. I will admit, I have made some very poor decisions in using store credit accounts to buy things. I never should have used them. We asked Barclay for a CLI a few months ago. They bumped us to $5300. Capital One gave us an automatic CLI to $2500. Here are our current stats: Barclaycard (opened 10/2013): Credit limit of $5300 - balance of $5100.Capital One (opened 11/2002): Credit limit of $2500 - balance of $1900Best Buy Store (opened approx. 2011): Credit limit of $1500 - balance of $2050 (over limit)Dell (opened December 2014): Credit limit of $1500 - current balance of $990.Credit Union loan (unsecured): Was originally $3k - now at $910. Will be paid off by December. Total balances: Roughly $10,950 or so. Credit utilization: 87%6 inquiries100% ontime paymentsOldest acct. is 13 1/2 years CreditKarma reports: TU: 659 (as of 8/9)EQ: 673 (as of 8/9)EX: Unknown FICO score via Barclaycard is reported at 687. Capital One reports TransUnion as 688 via their "Credit Tracker." My mom is FINALLY getting disability (don't ask, I can best describe it as beauacracy BS - SSI was reported to be nearly 1M cases behind). She will be getting a lump sum to makeup for the past few years plus around $1.3k monthly. I am still in high school, preparing to graduate next year. However, I am working two jobs. I have $1k a month to throw in and help wrangle debt. My mom has been making typical payments of $100 to Capital One and $250-300 to Barclay, as they are higher interest. Cap. One is 12% interest, Barclay is 18.9%. She plans on paying off and closing Dell by October. It's useless at 30% APR. She is paying off her bank loan too entirely by Ocrtober as well. She will be sending her normal payments to Cap. one and Barclay, with somewhere around $100-200 to Best Buy.  I want to send $1000 to Capital One this month, that will take it to around $800. Afterwards, I want to keep sending my entire $1k/mo. to Barclay and get that paid off ASAP, as it is accrueing 18% interest. In a perfect world, all of her major CCs (Capital One + Barclay) would be both paid off or at under 25% utilization by Turkey Day. After we are paid off, we plan on either locking our cards up or shredding them and only using them via Apple Pay, as they should be for emergencies only. We want to build up a rainy day fund in a savings account that pays interest as well, so we can avoid the CCs altogether. I would like some advice on my plan to pay our cards off. I really want to get my mom out of debt. I was wanting to lease a car before winter hit us in Ohio. Her car does horrible MPG (~10 MPG). I wanted to lease a Subaru Legacy. The lease would be in her name, with me paying for it. However, that ain't going to happen until the credit utilization is WAY down (under 30% in my mind) and credit scores are 700+, as I read somewhere around here 700+ is Tier 1 for Subaru Finance (Chase).
If the two of us can pay as much money as possible, we would hope to be able to have much lower balances by late November. I would appreciate any advice.  Looking forward to a debt-free future for my Mom and I... and staying that way (no friviolous purchases, etc.). Thanks for the help. WH

So pay the Best Buy down under limit.  They will likely add the over limit amount to your minimum payment. Then payoff DellThen pay off the 18%  Barclay's.Then pay off the lower rate Cap 1. You are so lucky that it's only 11K and that you have never missed any payments.  This is a situation where your mom's scores can be 760 or more when these cards are paid down under 10%.  That's great. Since "life has happened" twice with your mom with unexpected medical things, and the fact that she will be living off of a small disability benefit, she should reduce her credit cards to the bear minimum.  Maybe one Visa/MC with a 2K limit, another card with a 1K limit and a store score like Walmart. You can call and have your credit limits decreased.  But do not do this until these accounts are paid off or her scores will plunge further due to higher utilization.  Your mom is so lucky to have you.  What a great kid you are to help.  You also just got a lesson that many of us take 10 or 20 years to learn and you haven't gotten your own credit card yet.  You will likely be a credit whiz.

  • I would appreciate advice on technical choices for a large web application.

Application Server: Sun Java System Application Server Platform 8.2
    JDK: J2EE 1.4
    Database platform: Oracle 9i
I am currently in the middle of designing a large, not enterprise, web application.
At this point, I have the requirements, ERDs, UML diagrams, several initial JavaBeans and POJOs contributed from other developers. So, planning is going well...
This is a customer service application to manage customer accounts.
I have the following sections, each section are several applications, except for the main app, which is one application:
Option Maintenance - manages data used within the main app.
System Maintenance - manages data used within the main app.
Client Maintenance - manages data used within the main app.
Event Log Browser - a historical events viewer of events in the main app.
Transaction Browser - similar to Event Log Browser with transaction data.
Admin. Maintenace - manages users of the application.
    Customer Management - main app.
A user will authenicate into the main app and based on authorization, a user main also see all or specific management sections and browsers.
I need advice on the best way to approach this in terms of making technical choices?
I understand the MVC pattern, so my original though would be to use the framework within JSF. FacesServlet, etc...
Again, this isn't an enterprise application by any means, but it does need to be able to scale. In later phases, when asked to add another application - I don't want to look back and say "why did I do this?"
I just want to make sure I am making good technology choices based on known requirements.
    Thanks,
    --Todd

jschell: Thank you for the questions, these help a lot.
Q: Have you scaled the usage? Do you know how many users will use it in the first month and three years from now?
Yes, it is figured that we'll start with twelve users, with an increase of about one or two new users per year, not very much at all.
Q: What does the average user do? What does the unaverage user do?
The average user will only use the Customer Management - main app. They will be logged in throughout the day managing accounts based on any customers calling in.
Another average user will use the Browser based applications to check daily transactions, however this is usually towards mid-morning and in the evening.
An unaverage user will use the Maintenance based applications to set-up the data or make any changes. The Maintenance based applications will be rarely used after set-up.
Q: Are there any priority customers (like 50% of the companies business comes from one customer)? If so then it would be a really good idea to find out what they want and what they want to do.
Not really priority customers, but priority call times. Most calls happened between 6:30AM - 10:00AM CST. During that time, the Customer Management - main app will be used by all twelve users.
Q: What is the liability and security context? In other words what happens if some kid gets access to an account?
This is an internal application, hosted inside a DMZ. A user must authenticate (log in) to use the application.
What I have yet to deal with is how do I force authentication if a user tries to obtain access to an application through their browser history or even by typing in a URL... That's another topic in itself.
Any transactions with in the Customer Management - main app, will be logged - in which these logs can be view by the Transaction Browser.
Q: What are the future directions that the software might grow? What resources will it need? How will it be tested? How 'perfect' must it be when it goes live?
The only known growth for the software would be adding additional report viewers or monitor features to help track customer transactions.
Hardware resources, the application be hosted on a SunOS 5.8 Generic_117350-02 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-880. There are 8 Sun Sparc 900Mhz chips.
Testing will occur in phases at the development stage, then it will go through a full QA stage performed by the QA Department.
At minimum, the Customer Management - main app and Transaction Browser must be "perfect".
Q: How much time do you have to do it?
    I have three months.

  • Would appreciate advice please

All of a sudden, our Vision service has stopped...basically saying that it can't connect to Broadband. However, our Broadband is fine...(my wife is currently using her Ipad) Upstairs by the router, the Comtrend black box is showing two Green but the status is a steady Red...downstairs, behind the TV the Comtrend is just showing one steady Green light on status....where should I start to look ? I have rebooted the hub 3/4 times..the vision box 2/3 times all to no avail. A quick look behind the TV...(where we never go) seems to be all fine..no plugs appear to have dropped out. Advice would be appreciated...thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Assuming the powerline at your vbox has 1 green status light
If the one behind the TV has only 1 green light on status it suggests the ethernet is not plugged in or the vbox ethernet port is faulty, to check this remove the ethernet cable from the rear of the vision box and plug it into your laptop ethernet port.
If it lights the ethernet (middle light)on the powerline then leave it a minute to allocate an IP to the laptop. remove it from the laptop and plug it back into the vision box.
If the ethernet light does not come back on the powerline the fault lies with the port on the vision box.
if when plugging the ethernet cable into the laptop you dont get a middle light change the cable, if you still dont get a middle light then the powerline is broke.
mugs (hope that sorta made sense)
edit for some reason i thought you said laptop not ipad... hope you have a laptop lmao
oh and try resetting the hub not rebooting. small pin hole on rear lightly click a pen or something in the hole and hold until the lights all go out

  • Would appreciate advice on licensing/documenting my application.

I am getting ready to publish (in an academic journal) and release a scientific application written purely in Java. I'm rather new to programming, and I'm a bit overwhelmed at the legal complexities involved. I'm looking to make the software as "open" and "free" as possible, but I am limited by the libraries I have used. These libraries use the following licenses:
    LGPL
    GPLv2
    Apache v2
    BSD
I've read the information on gnu.org, but I'm still unsure of my options and paranoid that I may do something wrong. Do I need to license my software under the most restrictive of the licenses above? (From the list on gnu.org it appears they are all compatible with GPLv3.)
In addition to the questions above, there are a few other types of code uses/modifications that I'm unsure how to handle:
[1] Code snippets provided by the kind members of these forums
[2] Code from one of the LGPL libraries that I have extracted and modified
[3] Code from a blog (heavily modified)
[4] Code from online postings of "cookbooks" (heavily modified)
I have documented the origins of all the above code in the source code and given credit in the manual... is that sufficient?
    Thanks for the assistance!

    CommanderSalamander wrote:
Thank you very much for the advice Sarcommand.
The manual does indeed contain links to the blogs/projects/forum posts in question. I was afraid that forums/blogs/cookbooks were a gray area... I guess I'm going to just cross my fingers and hope that no-one is going to have legal issues with purely academic not-for-profit software using a snippet of code offered freely over the internet. I will do as you suggest and try to contact the authors to formally notify them of my intentions.I'd say this is the polite thing to do. Again, legally, I doubt you could really get in trouble for this sort of thing, it's just that regulations aren't particularly clear on that topic.
I wish I could shed the GPL library so my project licensing was less restrictive :(As much as I respect the idea behind the GPL, it is just not an appropriate license for libraries imho. There are, of course, loop-holes which will allow you to use GPL code in some circumstances, but I'd consider this morally unacceptable since the original author is of course free to license his code any way he wants.
Out of curiosity, what particular library are you using? May be there is an alternative under a more permissive license.
If you don't mind elaborating, what specific aspect of GPL makes it so much more restrictive than the other licenses I listed? The idea behind the GPL is to have a strong copyleft. It (mostly) goes back to Richard Stallman and his idea that software should essentially be free to use and modify for anyone. In order to achieve that, the GPL was conceived in a way that forbids you to relicense modified code with lesser rights than those of the original. So, while you're theoretically free to use other licenses than the GPL, in practice, you usually can't. If you were, for instance, to release your project under the BSD license, a commercial player, let's say Microsoft, might include your code in a proprietary, closed-source project, something the GPL forbids. This is obviously a great concept for projects like Linux. No matter what happens, the Linux kernel will always be free, it belongs to the community and can never be taken away. You might want the same thing to be true for a library you write, but personally I find that libraries should be available for anyone - i believe it is, to some degree, a matter of preference.
    Thanks!Anytime :-).

  • Would appreciate advice regarding upgrade to ver.2x

    Here's where I'm at. I'm using ver.1.3 and Photoshop CS3.
My problem is that one of these programs must be upgraded in order for me to use ACR (my preference over other raw converters) for my newest camera, canon 5dII.
I did install the trial for CS4 and though the raw plugin should not have done so, it somehow 'got into' CS3. I know it sounds odd and it's not possible and so on but I'd prefer to upgrade Lightroom as opposed to Photoshop because of it.
So, here's the thing. Am I right in assuming that Lightroom and Photoshop have virtually nothing in common other than they're both made by Adobe? The raw processing in Lightroom (raw 5x)has no common file (I actually don't see anything anywhere in Windows explorer other than the raw plugin file (ver.4.6)for photoshop) or anything to do with and will not conflict with photoshop?
An alternative I know is to use the DNG converter and I can continue to use CS3 but I think using Lightroom 2 may give better results to the images.
I appreciate anyone out there with lightroom experience to set me straight here.

    Bob,
Lightroom and Camera Raw share the same algorithms for what happens in processing a RAW image, but I don't think they share the same code.
Certainly they don't conflict with each other, no matter what version you have of either of the programs.

  • WS2012R2 Licensing Question - 95% confident of my understanding, but would appreciate confirmation

After a huge amount of research, I THINK I understand how WS2012R2 licensing works.
Since we’re a new business, we’re keeping things pretty simple for the time being.  I would appreciate some confirmation that my understanding of licensing makes sense though.
I first describe our architecture, then the four options, and then my understanding of the four options.
Many many thanks in advance; this forum has been incredibly helpful as I get started with these issues.
    Machine 1 @ Site 1:
OS: WS2012R2 (operating at hypervisor only)
VM1: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop session host)
VM2: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop connection broker and remote desktop licensing server)
    Machine 2 @ Site 1:
OS: WS2012R2 (operating as hypervisor only)
VM1: WS2012R2 (operating as server for electronic medical record software)
VM2: WS2012R2 (operating as domain controller, DNS server, and DHCP server)
    Machine 3 @ Site 1:
OS:  WS2012R2 or HVS2012R2 (operating as hypervisor only)
Machine1-VM1: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine1-VM2: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine2-VM1: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine2-VM2: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
    Machine 4 @ Site 2:
OS: WS2012R2 (operating at hypervisor only)
VM1: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop session host for remote users)
VM2: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop web access and remote desktop gateway)
    Machine 5 @ Site 2:
OS:  WS2012R2 or HVS2012R2 (operating as hypervisor only)
Machine4-VM1: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine4-VM2: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
We've identified the following four options:
    Option 1:
    Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard OEM Edition
    Backup Machines 3 and 5 = HVS2012R2 Edition
    Option 2:
Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard Open License Edition
    Backup Machines 3 and 5 = HVS2012R2 Edition
    Option 3:
    Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard OEM Edition
Backup Machines 3 and 5 = WS2012R2 Standard OEM Edition
    Option 4:
Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard Open License Edition
Backup Machines 3 and 5 = WS2012R2 Standard Open License Edition
    My understanding is as follows:
Option 1 is flawed because we would not be able to boot up the VMs on machines 3 and 5.  This is because a standard OEM edition license cannot be transferred, and so in the event of hardware failure, the license stays with the primary machine and cannot
be moved to the backup machine.
Option 2 is somewhat flawed due to the 90 day limit on transferring licenses.  For example, say Machine 1 fails, and I transfer the VMs and the license to Machine 3.   That step is permitted, however, I cannot reverse this transfer for 90 days
which is obviously suboptimal since Machine 3 is intended to be a temporary backup machine.
Option 3 is sufficient for my needs, subject to the only caveat that I understand that these OEM licenses are "locked" to the physical machine and cannot be transferred to another physical machine.   There are NO other limitations (e.g. I
would be able to legally and practically migrate a VM from Machine 1 to Machine 3 without worrying about activation issues, etc...)
Option 4 is sufficient for my needs, and would be the most flexible as the licenses could be moved if necessary down the road.

As has been stated many times in this forum, it is best to talk to a trained Microsoft licensing specialist about licensing questions.  Remember that a license is a legal contract between you and Microsoft, and using a forum for legal advice is a tad
risky.  Free advice is worth every penny.  www.microsoft.com/licensing.
That said, non-OEM licenses will always give you the most flexibility.  Secondly, you can get a volume license discount with as few as five copies of software, so you might want to investigate that.  Volume contracts provide additional benefits
outside of the what you get with the licenses.  Lastly, ensure that you have enough licenses to host the maximum number of VMs that will ever be running on a given host.  Hint, you mention Standard on a host that is a replica for four VMs.
If all four of those VMs are running, you would need a minimum of two Standard licenses assigned to that host.

On your iPad - go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Load Remote Images>On. Try that first.
You can also try a reset. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit the mail and all other apps. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. I would appreciate it if someone could advise me as to the optimum resolution, dimensions and dpi for actual photographic slides that I am scanning for use in a Keynote Presentation, that will be projected in a large auditorium. I realize that most projectors in auditoriums that I will be using have 1024 x 1200 pixels, and possibly 1600 x 1200. There is no reference to this issue in the Keynote Tutorial supplied by Apple, and I have never found a definitive answer to this issue online (although there may be one).
Here’s my question: When scanning my photographic slides, what setting, from 72 dpi to 300 dpi, would result in the best image quality and use up the most efficient amount of space?
Here’s what two different photo slide scanning service suppliers have told me:
Supplier No. 1 tells me that they can scan slides to a size of 1544 x 1024 pixels, at 72 dpi, which will be 763 KB, and they refer to this as low resolution (a JPEG). However, I noticed when I looked at these scanned slides, the size of the slides varied, with a maximum of 1.8 MB. This supplier says that the dpi doesn’t matter when it comes to the quality of the final digital image, that it is the dimensions that matter.  They say that if they scanned a slide to a higher resolution (2048 x 3072), they would still scan it at 72 dpi.
Supplier No. 2: They tell me that in order to have a high quality image made from a photographic slide (starting with a 35 mm slide, in all cases), I need to have a “1280 pixel dimension slide, a JPEG, at 300 dpi, that is 8 MB per image.” However, this supplier also offers, on its list of services, a “Standard Resolution JPEG (4MB file/image – 3088 x 2048), as well as a “High Resolution JPEG (8 MB file/image – 3088x2048).
I will be presenting my Keynotes with my MacBook Pro, and will not have a chance to try out the presentations in advance, since the lecture location is far from my home, so that is not an option.
I do not want to use up more memory than necessary on my laptop.  I also want to have the best quality image.
One more question: When scanning images myself, on my own scanner, for my Keynote presentations, would I be better off scanning them as JPEGs or TIFFs? I have been told that a TIFF is better because it is less compressed.
Any enlightenment on this subject would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

When it comes to Keynote, I try and start with a presentation that's 1680 x 1050 preset or something in that range.  Most projectors that you'll get at a conference won't project much higher than that and if they run at a lower resolution, it's better to have the device downsize your Keynote.  Anything is better than having the projector try and upsize your presentation... you work hard to make it look good, and it's mangled by some tired Epson projector.
As far as slides go, scan them in at 150 dpi or better, and make them at least the dimensions of your presentation.  Keynote is really only wanting 72dpi, but I do them at 150, just in case I need to print out the presentation as a handout later, and having the pix at 150 dpi gives me a little help with their quality on a printer.
You'd probably have to drop in the 150 versions again if you output the Keynote to .pdf or Word or something, but at least you have the option.
And Gary's right (above) go ahead and scan them as TIFFs.  Sooner or later you'll want to do something else with these slides (like make something for an iPad or the like) and having them as TIFFs keeps your presentation looking good.
Finally, and this is a big one, get to the location for your presentation ahead of time if you can, and plug the laptop in and see what you get.  There's always connection problems. Don't let the AV bonehead tell you everything will work just fine ('... I don't have any adapters for a Mac...') .  See it for yourself... you're the one that's standing up there.  Unless it's your boss, then you better be really sure it works.

Unfortunately, most of my advice is in the "hindsight is 20-20" category.
First off, I would never have purchased the peripheral accessories until the 14 day return period had expired. Second, you learned the hard way what the "14 days" really means.
Too bad you didn't do any homework, reading this and other forums and tech sites. Even word of mouth from others. That, more than anything could have steered you towards different phone choices from the get-go and I will leave that there with no further comment other than to say most of the issues you described have been discussed in this forum, ad nauseam.
Once you got into the refurbished phone exchanges, that is where things really went haywire. What someone tells you over the phone is a sketchy proposition, and when it comes down to it, it's your word against theirs.
I think Verizon tried to make it right, though. Remember, they don't make the phones. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
You stated yourself you were a satisfied Verizon customer before this. Had the first two phones performed as they should, you would still be a satisfied Verizon customer.
Doubt any of that will make you any happier, but after you went through the effort of writing such a long post, I thought I'd try.

I have a CQ60-214dx laptop. I would like to upgrade the processor in it to something else. I have read on the Internet that it is possible to swap out the processor as long as you find the right socket, wattage, etc. processor. Is there a list out there of what is compatible with the laptop I have? I was hoping to find a processor that would take it from a dual core machine to a core2duo machine. Thanks for any info you can give me!
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
According to the specs page for your notebook it comes with a Pentium T3400 processor.
According to the service manual, link below, in Chapter 1, on page 1-1, it lists all supported processors that can be installed in your machine.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02985882.pdf
That means you can go from your little ol' T3400 processor, all the way up to the mighty T9600 if you want to.
You are 100% correct about needing to know the particulars about the processor's FSB speed, L2 cache, lithography, etc.
Apparently notebook PC's have a much wider range of processors one can install. In a desktop for example, rarely do you get such latitude.
In any event, the only thing you need to check for you PC, is the BIOS release notes to see if any are required to support a faster or newer processor.
I've taken the liberty of doing that for you and note that no BIOS updates are necessary to install any of the supported Intel processors listed for you notebook.
There is one other tool I like to use and that is the Intel Processor Comparison tool.
Here is a sample of comparisons for you to review for proessors that would work in your notebook.
     http://ark.intel.com/compare/35581,35568,35563,35583
I am surprised that your notebook can handle processors from 2 different code names.
I also don't like that the sockets supported are not named exactly the same. I googled the difference and it doesn't appear to matter.
However, it should have either the GM or PM 45 chipset which supports any of those Pentium processors listed in the manual.
    http://ark.intel.com/products/chipsets/35509#compatibility
I believe the GL40 chipset is for celeron processors only.
So, that is basically it in a nutshell. You should be able to upgrade to any of the Pentium processors listed.

  • Premiere newbie would appreciate and be very happy for some "get-started" help

    Hi
    QUESTION 1
I´m a complete newbie to premiere elements. I have imported some .mts files and some .avi files from my digital HD camera....when I create a project all available move clips appear in my project to become possible to drag into my project timeline ..BUT it´s only the .avi´s that are being presented with a "snapshot image" of the clip, all .mts movies are just presented with a blue-ish standard icon and this gives me a hard time knowing exactelly which clip I should pick without having to open the movie.
I hope this is just a setting or can someone tell me why i cant spot an "image" representation from the .mts file to makes it easier to spot what the content of the file/s are ?
    QUESTION 2
Can someone give me some words about how to best structure moveies and images on the file system and also "inside" elements. I have two physical disks, one large 1TB disk and one smaller 80 GB SSD disk. How should I think here...all media on the "slower" disk and only the premiere software on teh faster SSd disk ?
    QUESTION 3
In the end, after editing movies, of course I would be able to present the material in the best format possible which I guess is blue-ray...but to be able to create a project that will make it possible to output a blue ray format, I have understood that I need to apply some sort of add on to my premiere installation, is that correct and if so - how can I do this and also from where do I get this add-on/plugin ?
Based upon my camera files (.mts), I would like to use my PS3 to present the finished material, can you give me some sort of step by step guidance to how to setup the project. SHould I use the .mts files and edit these, or should I perhaps convert them to something else and then make my movie ?? As you can hear I´m pretty confused about all these formats and what to do to make the end result as good as it can get
I´m not really sure about my initial recording either..I have a Canon HF10 recorder, and as far as I know to be able to get teh best quality for my "raw" material I need to use a format selection called "FXP" on the camera ? Does someone know if this is the best to use (perhaps a stupid question since i guess this will differ a lot between camera models perhaps) ?
REALLY would appreciate help on these above questions to be able to know the starting point....
Hope to get some answers that will help me up & running in a while...
    Thanks
    Helmut

Hunt, thanks again for your answer, I will try to look into the organizer issue
in other ways, thinking about looking into the books suggested by Steve..
Something else I guess you can guide me through though is the different formats...jsut to mention, I basically dont know a thing about different movie formats, the only thing I know is that I have a HDdigital video recorder (Canon HF10) and that the files I copy across to my machine is of this .mts format...
should I make another setting on my video camera to get another format of the files I record and the files I then transfer to my computer..remember I´m a total newbie so when you mention that you should have converted to HDV - this does not say me anything unfortunatelly....could you in any easy watell me the basic things I should know....when I created my project in premiere I was asked to select what kind of project settings I wanted to have...for this selection a number of different formats was possible and I jsut picked one of them basically wthout knowing what I was doing.....kind of frustrating since I want to make the best qualty output from my movies and also the edited output from premiere...
Is it possible to give some easily understood intro and what small things I should always do......like when selecting the project "media" or what specific setting to check that are important on the video camera itself.....what is the best/highest quality format to work with/edit to get the best output from my finished medias etc
    Apprecite your help a lot
    Thanks
    Helmut
