Launching .desktop files

Noob here running arch with i3 and dmenu and I can't figure out how to launch .desktop files. If I open /usr/share/applications in a filebrowser, doubleclicking a .desktop file opens it up in my editor. If I add /usr/share/applications to my $PATH they show up in dmenu but again open up with my editor. Same goes for xdg-open file.desktop which corresponds with this bug.
#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Test
Exec=chromium --app=http://localhost:8080/
Terminal=false
Icon=chrome-http___localhost_8080__1
Type=Application
Categories=GTK;Network;WebBrowser;
StartupWMClass=localhost

Is that part of xfce? I can't figure out how to install that on its own. I'd rather not a desktop environment just to get this working.

    Hi,
    Try these 3 solutions
    1. Did you start vncserver services as:
    service vncserver start
    2.Check that port 5901 has not been blocked by a firewall:
    # nc -vz localhost 5901
    You should get a connection and a termination. If you get an error, fix the firewall.
    3. service iptables stop
    Hope This Helps
    Regards,

  • Any idea why this desktop file won't launch the application?

    I have been trying to get this desktop file to work so I can launch epsxe faster. However, it does not do anything when I try to run it. Mind you I do have the permissions and group set correctly. Here it is:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Name=ePSXe
    Comment=Enhanced PSX emulator
    Exec=/opt/epsxe/1.9.0/epsxe
    Icon=/opt/epsxe/logo.jpg
    Terminal=false
    Type=Application
    Categories=Game;

    You REALLY do have permissions set correctly? Mind posting a "ls -la /opt/exsxe/1.9.0/"? Have you tried setting Terminal to ture? You could run it in the background with &. Also, have you tried reading the manual pages for your PSX emulator?

  • You know that whole .desktop file security scare?

    It goes something like this:
    1) Open a malicious email attachment or go to a website with malicious javascript or whatever...
    2) A program is downloaded and executed with your permissions
    3) It edits ~/.local/applications/synaptic.desktop or whatever other popular program.
    4) In the new .desktop file it adds to the run command some nasty key logger, so now when you launch Synaptic (or pacman if someone were to attack Archers) it logs your keystrokes.
    5) Now it has your root password and can do whatever it wants.
    I just want to know: How likely is this, really??
    Can a website seriously just download and run a file without me knowing? I doubt Firefox would let that happen... Or could an email attachment be executed without me being able to read it first? I'm pretty sure it can't...
    I don't understand why people seem to be concerned about .desktop files...
    I'm not even worried about my Windows machine on my home network. My router is set to reject as much stuff as it can and all computers have remote log-ins disabled. The only security problem I worry about is that my Fiancee's online courses actually send .doc's through the net, which I've heard is bad practice.

    What I've read about it has a nasty tweak, a properly crafted .desktop file could launch a dialog asking for your/root password, at that time it wrecks havoc in the system and open the add/remove software, updates or whatever is it disguised to do and the user doesn't realize what just happened.
    Of course there is always the other option of running as user and do whatever it can, if the creator is smart and lucky enough he/she will be able to put a nasty payload on the autostart list and the user can have a zombie machine without even knowing.
    It doesn't need to break the system to do a lot of damage, wiping or stealing data from the user account is enough. Of course, this has a higher probability of happening if you run and/or install everything you find in untrusted places without proper review first.
    The thing is that there are so many distros and so many versions of each distro, each with slightly different settings, DEs, browsers and whatnot that I guess it still isn't worth the bother unlike with platforms where everyone uses the same browser, possibly the default settings that come with a clean system install and worse, no security updates/patches.
    Add to this the complete lack of good sense and the common (and somewhat accepted I guess) practice of using cracks and keygens for you know what and you start to understand how come at least some users keep getting the same problems over and over again.
    These days with linux it is extremely easy to keep the system up to date with the latest security fixes, users tend to look free alternatives to payed programs and look first in the package manager to see if it is already available, this alone helps a lot, add a dose of good sense and you should be good to go.

  • How place an LD_PRELOAD bash command into a .desktop file (LXDE)

    To enable video in Skype with my webcam I must launch skype the following way:
    LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
    To get that command done from my LXDE menu I tried to edit the skype.desktop file and place that line after the "Exec" desktop spec. It does not work, in quotes or not, nor with a full pathname to skype.
    How can I force my desktop entry to run the command above?

    bash -c "LD_PRELOAD=... skype" should work too, for example.

    Application "FINDER"not responding,Desktop files disappeared & " also "Trash" not working svn after relaunching several times.

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
    Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Apploader.msi Error when launching Desktop Manager 5.0

    Tried to launch Desktop Manager 5.0 today to sync my BB Curve 8310 and a Windows Installer error pops up.   Desktop Manager 5.0 has been working fine up to now.
    The error message says, " The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable".   It is looking for the Apploader.msi file in the C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\ directory.
    Can't seem to find it and have no idea why I'm having this problem now after working fine before.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks,
    Herb...

    This is really odd...is this a work computer? Did they redirect your C: drive to a server somehow? Do you have perhaps a different truly local hard drive that you could use as the installation destination? Really odd indeed...

  • .desktop files and mimeinfo.cache... Why?

    It just struck me as I read about mailcap that .desktop files and the mime info cache are redundant. And mailcap is much simpler too, and seems to require less mucking around to e.g. open a file in a console app running in an xterm. For instance
    audio/mpeg; mplayer %s; needsterminal
    Bang, done.
    So can someone tell me why the FD.O system with .desktop files is now the standard? Is it just that it makes it easier to create menus, or something like that? Is it a more friendly backend for GUIs? Other than letting you easily launch applications from your file manager, it doesn't seem to offer a whole lot of benefits...
    Edit: Other than the fact that the default /etc/mailcap file for some distros kind of sucks. Using VLC's ASCII output by default? Seriously?
    Last edited by Gullible Jones (2010-12-13 05:12:25)

    It's more automated, you have to make the mailcap file yourself to get specific preferences - people don't like editing config files.
    Distros could ship a standard one, but then it's not based on what apps you have installed or what you want to use to open things.
    GUIs would have to all implement some way to edit the mailcap file so you could change default apps easily and you would have to have the package manager edit it when you install stuff - I don't think that would be pretty
    I guess you could use a bunch of tests and include every application that could open the file, but that's not so pretty either.

  • Desktop files disappeared from displaying on the Desktop

    My existing Desktop files disappeared from displaying on the Desktop--the files still exist, and newly added files appear on the Desktop; I did not enter any "hide my files" command. How do I have them display? Running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

    Do a backup.
    Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist.  Move the .plists to your desktop.
    Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
    If the same, return the .plists to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.
    Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

    Any suggests?

    According to your post, my understanding is that you failed to launch Desktop Designer.
    Did you mean the Dashboard Designer?
    If so, the issue occurs because of an inconsistency in the Dashboard Designer version numbers in the latest SharePoint Server 2013 public update and cumulative update.
    To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.
    Method 1
    Revert your SharePoint Server 2013 installation to the last version before you installed the October 2013 update.
    Method 2
    If you cannot revert your SharePoint Server 2013 installation systematically, try to do it manually by replacing the following SharePoint Server 2013 files.
    Note The replacement files are available on the following Microsoft
    TechNet Blogs website:
    PerformancePoint
    2013 Dashboard Designer fails to start after October 2013 CU
    Method 3:

  • One Fix: Can't launch desktop items, desktop dead, desktop icons not workin

    Just reporting a strange thing, hope it helps in a future "search"...
    The items on my desktop had become "unclickable". That is, I could dbl-click desktop items and nothing would happen.
    The problem? I had set the mouse dbl-click speed to "fastest" setting. (Hours earlier) The system simply wasn't catching the dbl-clicks. Setting the click speed slower solved the issue.
    So... Desktop item won't launch or open? Check your mouse settings...
    Key words & phrases for search:
    desktop item won't launch open
    desktop doesn't work
    desktop dead
    desktop items not working
    desktop files not working
    dead destop

    Hi Chris,
    Try reinstalling the drivers that came with the mouse.

  • HOW REBUILD THE DESKTOP FILE ON INTEL CORE DUO I MAC ?

    On my old I mac, I could restart the computer, and while it was restarting, I held down both option key and apple key at same time until a message appeared which asked if I wanted to rebuild the desktop file. I tried this same thing on my new Intel Core Duo I mac, but nothing happened. The reason I want to rebuild the desktop file is because things are slowing down. Everything works, but there is a delay between the command, and the resulting action. Please tell me how I can speed up things again. Is there some other means to try to eliminate delays on my present Intel computer? Thanks in advance.

    If you have several GB free space on the HD, the next question would be, do you turn the Mac off or put it in system sleep overnight? That can prevent the cron maintenance tasks from running (display-only sleep allow the tasks to run). Tiger is supposed to track if the maintenance tasks haven't run and launch the tasks outside of the nominal 3AM timeframe if enough time has elapsed, but the timing and real-world functionality of that test is unclear. You can leave the Mac in display-only sleep a few times a month (especially the first weekend of the month); you can manually Force Background Maintenance; or you can use a third-party utility such as OnyX to run the maintenance. Note that any system utility you use must be compatible with the OS version (e.g., use the Tiger version of OnyX with 10.4.x).

  • Desktop files are sometimes disappearing.

    When I start my computer my desktop files are sometimes disappearing and when I tell the computer to organize the desktop they will return.  I have been using Mac's for 15 years and never have I had this problem until I updated to OS X Mountain Lion.  Can anyone tell me how to fix this.  Is it possible this problem is because I use two monitors?
    Thank you for any help.
    Mark

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
    These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
    Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
    Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
    Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
    Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
    This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
    Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -ef
    Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

    1.firefox not responding
    2.firefox restart
    3.looked like firefox upgraded itself(not sure)
    4.lost all bookmarks from the browser
    5.decided to restart the powerbook
    6.all system prefernces settings lost
    7.MOST IMPORTANT-the system affected and all desktop files were deleted (or gone somewhere I still don't know).
    note> I have tried the "bookmark recovery" for firefox. didn't work.
    the thing that puzzles me more is the system's weird failure caused afterwards. why to delete the desktop files?
    Last thought was to run a file recovery soft. but I don't have any installed, any suggestions?
    Please, any insights are appreciated
    thanx in advance

    HI,
    *"the thing that puzzles me more is the system's weird failure caused afterwards. why to delete the desktop files?"*
    You need to boot from your install disk and check the hard disk using Disk Utility.
    Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
    Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
    Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    (Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
    Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
    If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
    If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
    When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
    Select your start up disk and click Restart
    If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    Did you repair the disk with DiskWarrior as mentioned here?
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1821781#1821781
    *"Volume check failed.*
    *Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)"*
    Did you repair disk then?

  • Launch external files on Linux

    I want to launch external files from Java, in a cross platform way.
    ie say I have a file fred.jpg, I want to launch that on any platform to open in the editor defined on that computer.
    The book 'Swing Hacks' (Marinaccci and Adamson), shows how to do this for Windows and Mac. My version of their code is
         static public void launch(URL url){
              try{
                   String cmd;
                   if (OS.isMac())
                        cmd = "open "+url;
                   else     // TODO linux?
                        cmd = "cmd.exe /c start "+url;
                   Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
              catch(Exception e){new Fail(e);}
         }However, I don't know what to put in for linux?
    Searching the web I came across http://weblogs.java.net/blog/ixmal/archive/2006/05/javaawtdesktop.html,
    which suggests that
    Desktop.getDesktop().open(new File(filename));is more platform independant. However for me it seems to work only on Windows, failing silently on Mac and Linux?
    Can someone with a good knowledge of Linux help please.

    >
    Will Duke stars get anyone to answer this?>I cannot say. What I can tell you is that at least it got me to read it.
    And now I look over your original post..
    >
    ..However for me it seems to work only on Windows, failing silently on Mac and Linux?>'Seems'? The docs. for Desktop.open(File) suggest it throws a whole range of exceptions if it cannot perform the task. Are you sure the code is not 'swallowing exceptions'?
    Can you produce an SSCCE that fails as you claim? If so, this really sounds like a bug.
    And as an aside, Desktop was introduced in 1.6, but AFAIR, Apple is still stuck on 1.5. How did you get it to 'fail silently' on a Mac.?
    Edit 1:
    But if you are intent on doing it the way that you originally asked about, you might be able to pick up some tips from the [http://browserlaunch2.sourceforge.net/|BrowserLauncher2] code.
