Layer Style Keyboard zoom bug

When using  CS5 and I have the Layer Style dialog box open, using keyboard zoom (command -/+), zooming in triggers 3 zooms instead of one, and zooming out triggers 2 zooms. If I leave the dialog open and switch to another program and  back it behaves normally with a single zoom. Also if I then click any of the option buttons (like Direction: Up or Down) or pick something from a drop-down list it is ok but if I click on any slider or click on any other function the multiple zoom returns.
On a unrelated note I really wish the layer styles would display properly at all zoom levels, anything 50% and out makes any bevel type effects display twice as large.
Mac 10.6.8, Photoshop CS5 12.0.4

Yes, I can easily see it with your file.  Specifically it happens right between 63% and 64% zoom.  We see it again at the boundary between 32 and 31%  The jump appears quite obviously if you do an animated OpenGL zoom that crosses that boundary.
This appears to be because of full pixel round-off errors, making the effect suddenly 1 pixel larger as certain zoom levels are crossed.  Just as a guess, the effect generating code must be old and integer-based, and so is unnble to deal with fractional pixels when generating the downsized cache level images.
At small effect sizes, such as what's in your image, the error becomes more apparent.  I think I've not noticed this much because I tend to do my design work at a fairly large size.
I've seen people (e.g., the Adobe Engineer Chris Cox) tell others to always judge effects at 100% zoom, implying that there's no direct fix for this round-off error.  However, I did think of one, though it may cause its own problems (slowness, instability):  In the Edit - Preferences - Performance dialog there's a setting for Cache Levels.  If my theory about what's going wrong is correct, we should be able to set Cache Levels to 1 and see the problem go away.
Sure enough:
Take note:  Based on my own testing with Cache Levels set to 1, you can expect some things to go wrong.  Some filters might not display properly, you might get crashes if you try to work with OpenGL enabled, and you will DEFINITELY see a slowdown in a number of different operations.

  • Layer Style Stroke Pixel Bug?

I am finding at random times that when I draw a rectangle with rectangle tool and then use layer style to apply a 1 pixel border, the border sometimes have a fade on either side of the that 1 pixel and it becomes 2 pixel.  It doesn't appear on all four sides, just randomly left, right, top, bottom...
To better illustrate the problem, i have attached an image and it's zoomed in to show the problem...You see how left and bottom is 1 pixel but not top and right side?  This is strange and never happened in CS4...I am using CS5 by the way...Anyone experienced this?

Pixels are the building blocks of raster images but you can put vectors anywhere, even at half pixel increments. So what happens when you tell Photoshop to make a 1 pixel stroke in such a way that it shows 25% in one pixel and 75% in the one next to it? You cannot fill half pixels so it has to either resize your vector so that it snaps to the pixel grid or, and this is what Photoshop does, add anti-aliassing which makes the 25% selected pixel 25% gray and the 75% selected pixel 75% gray (if the stroke was black).

  • Custom Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working In Layer Style / Blending Options Dialogue Box (Mac OS 10.6.8)

In the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, my custom Keyboard Shortcuts to zoom in and out of the image is no longer working. Cmd+opt+shift+1 acts as cmd+1 (jumps to Drop Shadow), and cmd+opt+shift+0 acts as cmd+0 (jumps to Stroke). Outside of this box the commands seem to be working fine.
Example 1: Create a new RGB document, cmd+j the background layer, double-click this layer to open the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, mash Cmd+opt+shift+1.
Result 1: The dialogue box shift focus to the Drop Shadow Options instead of the image zooming in to 100%.
Expected Result 1: The image should zoom to 100%.
Example 2: Create a new RGB document, cmd+j the background layer, double-click this layer to open the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, mash Cmd+opt+shift+0.
Result 2: The dialogue box shift focus to the Stroke Options instead of the image zooming to “Fit on Screen”.
Expected Result 2: The image should zoom to “Fit on Screen”.
This same thing happened in the CS5 Beta, and it was quickly fixed, so I hope this is not a complicated issue.
Thanks, and keep up the wonderful work!

  • BUG: Saving Text with Layer Styles to PDF

I was just able to take the CS6 beta for another test run, and it seems the following ancient, but high-priority bug (at least for me) hasn't been addressed:
When saving large Photoshop documents (composites in resolutions like, say 7000x10000 pixels) to Photoshop PDF, certain layer styles are often not exported correctly when applied to text layers. The layer styles that are affected are those that render pixels that are then clipped inside the text, such as Gradient Overlay, Bevel & Emboss etc.
When output, they usually don't span the entire text in the PDF, but are cut off with a straight line at some point (I can't supply an example image right now, my apologies). Inside of Photoshop, they render correctly at all zoom levels. My guess is that this is somehow related to the raster data being written as individual tiles and for some reason, some of these are then omitted for layer styles.
The problem isn't new to the CS6 Beta, but has existed for many versions. I have run into it in both Mac and Windows versions. The current workaround is to always expand layer styles on the text layers that are affected into layers before exporting, which is tedious and error-prone since there is inevitably something that gets missed (EDIT: I was wrong there, that workaraound doesn't work, the problem persists even if the layer style is expanded into a layer that is then applied as a clipping group).

Two possibilities: Pre-compose everything and fade the comp or use a second layer that has the layer styles, but in its Blending Options for the layer styles has set Fill opacity to zero, so only the styles are rendered, but not the source. Whjat you are seeing is normal behavior based on how styles are supposed to work. Whenever there is a non-zero (non-transparent) pixel, the get applied, where the pixels opacity acts as amultiplier for the style's intensity. Looks good for some, but often causes this popping appearance...

  • Layer Style - Zoom In Issue

I have a jpg image in AE CS3 - I used a layer style - stroke of about 10 pixels to make it look like it had a white border.
When I put the image into 3d space and zoom move it further into z space, the stroke gets very big - as I zoom in the stroke gets smaller.
How can I make the stroke appear to stay the same size? I'm zooming in and out with a camera.
    Thanks!

I've found a solution for this...I put my jpeg into a pre-composition and moved all of it's attributes to the new composition. The stroke now stays in place.

  • Copy/Paste Layer Style Bug

Really, you guys didn't fix the copy/paste layer style bug in 13.0.2.  Wow, easily reproduced, there is an adobe recommended workaround, meaning very aware of the problem, and couldn't fix it for this update, very sad Adobe, very sad.  Can you let us know when this will be fixed?

The 13.0.2 update was targeted to fix one specific bug. It was not intended to be a general bug-fix update.
We are testing a fix now for the layer styles bug and others, and we intend to include these fixes in the next general update, which is currently slated for release in less than two months.

  • A bug?  Layer styles change or dissappear when you flatten/merge layers.

Does anyone else experience this problem in CS3?
An example for me would be,
right now I have an outer glow with noise applied to something but when I flatten the few layers I have in the file, the noise simply disappears or the glow becomes faded. With other layer styles, there might be a change, too, but usually the effect just weakens in color when i flatten the layers.
any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

I either used too many words or too few, but I'm not really sure.
The specific layer style combo and layer merge I am talking about is simpler than you might imagine..(see the pictures I posted of the results of the merge.)
Yellow outer glow at full opacity with 100% noise, merged down with a single layer. (and that single layer does not have anything other than a fill in it)
When i merge the two, (both blending modes are set to normal) the noise then disappears and the glow fades. It really does not have anything to do with how close or far away the "view" is.
    Trust me, I tried it.
I even used a microscope and a telescope..
    It doesn't change anything.
In other words, the layer styles always look okay regardless of how they are viewed, UNTIL you flatten or merge them.
So to finally answer Buko's question, the answer is no.
And I did actually take into consideration what D.Katz said about possible interference with the appearance.. view needing to be at 100 to even judge what's going on.
The problem I am experiencing only occurs the minute one layer combines with another layer that has a layer style(s).
If you compare the two images I posted, you will see that there is a very large loss in quality rendering the layer style not even worth using in the first place.

  • Need help saving layer styles Photoshop CS6 Extended for Mac (Mountain Lion)

I have been trying to learn Photoshop. I am using Photoshop CS6 Extended on a Macbook Pro (Mountain Lion). My Adobe software has been updated. I have been doing tutorials using a lot of layer styles. In one of these tutorials, it was suggested that if I would possibly want to use the style again that I should save it. At this point I had entered all my layer styles info and was still in the window with the list of layer styles on the left (bevel and emboss, drop shadow, etc., and the "New Style" button on the right. I clicked on the "New Style" button and when another window popped up asking me to name the style, I named it. When I looked at my styles in the styles panel, I saw the little button for the new style. I saved my graphic and closed it. Later I wanted to apply this style to text in another graphic. The style was used on text originally. When I clicked on it though the style didn't look the same. Upon investigation, a couple of setting under Bevel and Emboss had reverted to defaults. They were different numbers when I saved the style. I could go back in and change these two numbers and get the same results, but I don't understand why these numbers changed on their own -- why the style didn't completely "save." Is there something I have done wrong, or is this some kind of bug? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Thank you very much for your reply! Yes, both documents were at 72 resolution. This morning I tried to save yet another style (same resolution document). It worked when I used it the first time. Then I switched to the other style I had saved. That one took some of the bevel and emboss settings from this morning's style. The numbers which will not save are the angle and altitude under the shading section. Just now I made another document (text at 72 resolution) and both styles had changed these numbers to 120 and 30. Is this something I am doing wrong? I am trying to use text of a similar font and size. I updated my software last night in the hopes that that would help. This morning I reset preferences. Don't know what to do! Thanks for helping me!

  • Layer Styles don't work with one file

I'm using CS2 for Win. I've got an important file that will not accept layer styles. The layers appear to be "styled" on the layer stack, but nothing previews or shows up on the actual layer. I've created new layers; they don't take styles either. Other files in the system - including new ones - work okay; it's just this one that has the problem.
It could be contaminated; I accidentally saved it as a PDF with layers, and then back to a TIF. It's an 8-bit file; I've tried saving it as a PSD. Same problem.
Is there a way to rescue this thing? I have to get it to a client tomorrow. Many thanks to anyone who can help!

I've been having this happen in Photoshop Elements 2.0.  Looks like a bug.  But it might be me not knowing what I'm doing.
However, one fix that just worked for me was to use Image -> Duplicate Image.  Drop shadow worked in the duplicated image even though it would not work in the orginal.  Nothing I've tried doing to the orginal (save and open again, turn layers on and off, chagne order, duplicate layers and delete the "broken" ones, etc) seemed to allow the layer effectrs to work for me once it stopped working.
This "bug" happened to me after messing around with the background layer - deleting and recreating it as a solid color.  Looks like the software is getting confused about where to image the drop shadow.  Maybe it is getting confused about the order of the layers or something?  If you turn the preview OFF you can see small changes as you adjust the paramaters in the effect.

  • Having problem with applying layer style "stroke" to group

    - Windows 8.1 / 64bit
    - i3-4150 / 4GB / Geforce GTX 750 TI
    - Photoshop CC 2014
    Hi!
I don't know why, but there is some problem that applying layer style "stroke" to group.
When i make a group with some layer and apply to group a layer style-stroke with inside option,
the strokes looks like grid are generated inside.
Why i said that stroke cross to ㅎrid, because it looks like grid if i make that group bigger.
(that black square is 'Rectangle 1' layer. Just resizing bigger than before)
Does anyone have same problem with me?
    Please, I need your help..

I am having the same problem. it happens every time in cc and cc 2014. I am back using cs6. Which seems to run better on the whole.
That's interesting. And this is happening with CC and CC 2014?  Do you have all the updates for the Photoshop CC versions?
I've just tried to duplicate it without success, (windows 7, GTX570) so I wonder if there is a condition that triggers it?  Unfortunately, with this being such an old thread, the only person still around is R Kelly.
OK, I just thought to try it on my Cintiq Companion 2, which has Windows 8.1 and Intel 5100, and the bug occurred. I actually got as far as firing up my Win 8.1 laptop before remembering that I had to sign out of CC to put it on my Cintiq, so I only have CS6 on it.
Anyway....  looks like the bug is still there.  Are you using Win 8.1?

  • PSE 7 - Layer Styles don't show on white background?

    Hello!
I've encountered some odd, but repeatable, situations with PSE 7's Layer Styles. If you have a white background, add a layer to that and then apply the Layer Style (like "Blue Ghost," "Heavy Noisy," "Noisy," "Radioactive," and others) you do not see the Layer Style.
However, the layer is marked with the "fx" symbol. And...what really surprised me is that if I change the color of my background layer to anything but white, they then show up! Note that things like "Radioactive" is a bright green edging layer styleit should easily show up on white. And my layer that has the layer style applied to it is above the background layer and visible. The picture part of the layer is quite visible, but the layer style is not as long as the background layer is white.
I think this is a glitch/bug...but it's odd, because it's not there in PSE 6 and I can't imagine why Adobe would change this in PSE 7...and as far as I know there is no "new" feature associated with Layer Styles in PSE 7.
If anyone has any other information on this or a work-around, I'd be most interested in hearing about it.
    Thank you!

    Beverly,
I can't imagine that another Beverly Schulz would be posting to this forum other than the one that teaches for ed2go. Since your name popped up here I want to take the opportunity to say that I took PSE5 Advanced and it was the best ever online class I have taken. The knowledge has served me well and I still refer to my notes.
I hope someone can solve your problem. I am now working in PSE7 and am interested in the responses.
    Best of luck.

  • Opacity & transparency related layer styles lost on rasterize/flatten/merge down (cs6)

So I'm working on a project and I'm making a button and I have come across an issue that I don't normally have with this particular button...I'm not sure why it's happening or how to fix it...but it's pretty annoying. I'm wondering if anyone can help out or if it's a known bug or anything like that!
So, I have three folders for the three different states, and within each folder are multiple layers, some with layer styles (it seems to be gradients that are playing up here, and opacity related), some with no layer styles but just lowered opacity. I need to flatten each of the folders to create the button sprites. The problem is...I go to flatten the folder and it appears to turn off any gradient related layer styles, and anything at a lowered opacity is ramped up to 100%. I tried going through and rasterizing the invidiual offending layers. Same problem. I tried creating blank layers and merging down the offending layers. Same problem.
    I'm stumped! Image examples below:
This problem is messing with my mojo! Any help appreciated!! (and yes, my adobe is all patched up and updated)... I feel like I haven't had to deal with problems flattening transparency for many versions....

Generally speaking you can't expect to collapse groups of adjustment layers into a single layer and hope for much of anything useful to come of it.
If you've gotten Photoshop showing what you want to see, what's the problem with leaving the groups as they are, then just doing Save As (e.g., PNG) to store your work products?
Can you save a small PSD file and make it available online, so we can look carefully inside it to see what you're doing?

  • Layer Styles Disappearing from my list

When I first launch Photoshop and load a preset layer style I can get a full list of available presets to load. After clicking on an element and actually using a layer style on it I no longer can get my full list of available presets to load. The list is cut to 1/3 of the original list.
So the full list is available and in the folder but once using a layer style it seems most of the layers styles disappear from the load menu. I have had no problem with this for months and made no changes over the last few days so this is mind boggling.
Is this a known bug? Any suggestions?

  • Blend modes in "stroke"-layer styles not working ?

Hi. Anybody else got problems with the the blend modes in the "stroke" layer style, or am I doing something wrong?
right click on layer > blending options > stroke > blend mode
    (position=inside)
I want to use "fill type"="gradient", but the blend modes do not even work with "fill type"=color. For both fill modes, the stroke does not let any pixels of the layer shine through, no matter what blend mode I choose.
I often use blend modes, for example "darken", etc. I know how they work, but somehow for the stroke layer style it seems not to work at all.
I know, it's pretty basic, but I have spent several hours on that and simply don't succeed. Thanks for any help.

As there's only a single sentence refering to the stroke layer style in the CS3 manual, I'd also be thankful for an Adobe comment, clarifying whether this is a bug or not and if it will be improved.
Just to depict the current behaviour in a more graphic way:
    test image:                                                                      layers:
    stroke settings:
    expected results:
    actual results:
I'd suggest to add a checkbox "knockout", which would let the user choose between the two results.

  • Scripting New "Rasterize Layer Style" feature of Photoshop CS6

I want to script new feature added to Photoshop CS6 "Rasterize Layer Style". I tried Layer.RasterizeLayerStyle() but this function doesn't exist.
I know that I still can add an empty layer below the layer and merge them together, but it would be much easier and the code would be more readable if I can use "Rasterize Layer Style" command in my script.

Did you try installing the optional Scriptlisener Plug-in to see if it recorded anything.   Though Layer>Rastersize>Layer Style is new you could always accomplish what it does other ways.  Like merging visible layers where one layer is empty.  It just rasterize the layer along with its layer style. In fact if the layer in question was a smart object layer after the "Rasterize Layer Style" operation that is exactly whet you will have a raster layer no longer will it be a smart object layer.
Adobe shortchange scripting in CS6 for example you can not read the usere interpolation Photoshop preference if its set to the new default setting Bicubic Automatic and you can not set it to Bicubic Automatic if you read that it is not set to Bicubic Automatic.  Adobe simply dropped the ball and did not add the nessary update to support CS6 new features to scripting and installing the sicptlistner will turn off a new feature like allowing tool recording.  CS6 is by far the buggest release of Photoshop I ever installed. The list of the Photoshop versions I have installed is
    PS3
    PS5
    PS5.5
    PS7
    CS
    CS2
    CS3
    CS5
    CS6
I use CS3. The money I sent upgrading to CS5 and CS6 so far has been a wast of money... Phehaps Adobe will fix the bugs and not deferr them to some future release like they historically do.
