Layers desynchronized outside a composition

I have the next problem with After Effects CC. I converted CS6 file to a CC one, where, inside a composition, some layers are positioned very precisely. This layers are png, and they are overlapping a video. The problem is that, when I use this composition, outside I see that all the png layers are desyncronized, it's like they have been moved one frame forward. Then I go inside the composition and everything is perfect. I tried to move the layers to fix it, but the same problem occurs. Do you have any idea how to solve it? I don't want to repeat again all this work. Thanks for your time!

Let me make sure I understand you correctly.
Your PNG layers look perfect over the video. Then you place that composition inside another composition and it doesn't look right? What if you create a brand new composition and drop that one in?
What are your frame rates? Could we see some screenshots?

  • Import Illustrator File with multiple layers and sublayers as composition retaining all layers and sublayers

    I have drawn a country map with multiple layers and sublayers including streets, cities, rail lines, ...
    Now I want to create a template for my collegues in After Effects.
    For this I want to import the .ai file into After Effects retaining all sublayers and layers in compositions and subcompositions.
    When I do that, I get the first couple of layers correctly, the other ones comes in one merged composition.
    What can I do, to get all layers each as a layer in After Effects?
    Yours, Raphael

    Illustrator only imports the first level of layers. If you have groups or paths below you need to release the groups to layers. The layers will then be stacked in order as sub layers. Then you need to move them up.
    The steps are to select a layer in the Illustrator layer panel, then without selecting any specific element in the layer click on the menu in the top right corner and select release to layers. All a elements in that layer will be converted to layers. Now select them all and drag them up above the original layer. This will leave the original layer empty and put all elements in new layers.
    Here's a tutorial I did a zillion years ago which uses this technique to turn a blend into a morph.

  • Why is After Effects importing my PSD's as a folder of layers and a flat composition?

    I've imported Photoshop files to after effects tons of times. But suddenly, I'm having problems importing them. I make sure that I click keep layers and all that, but it imports a strange, short, flat layer in after effects and then a folder of all my layers as opposed to a precomp with the layers. I've tired saving the files again and making sure all of the settings are correct and its not helping at all. I've even tried precomping the folders content and the weird layer and it does nothing.
    Can someone please help me? All I want is for this photoshop file to be imported as a precomp, but it keeps opening as layers in one folder which isn't linked to the photoshop file.

    There's got to be something different with the PSD. Is it RGB? That's the first thing to check. What is the structure of the PSD. Layer Groups? Effects? There are so many things that could go wrong that without more information we would just be guessing.

  • Layering images outside ID -vs- within ID

    HI,
    Are there any appreciable differences between layering 2 images with drop shads in PS, flattening, then importing into ID as one file, and importing 2 images into ID and creating drop shads there, in terms of:
    1. print quality
    2. drop shad transparency
    3. sizing
    4. total size of files?
    I've always wondered if it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, as we're just working with numbers on the front end or the back end...2+2 always = 4?
    thenk you...

    Also, if you don't flatten in Ps (as you are doing), then a multiplied shadow will not multiply over an InD background. ie drop shadow will appear as grey over a coloured background, instead of as a darker version of the colour...
    Well, I was flattening, but I do it over a transparent layer and save it as a Tif was saved transparency....I'm probably going the long way around.
    Is it going to be grey this way as well?
    I tried the drop shad in ID and it was good...but if the shad drops to the right, I still want a little on the top and left side, softer and it seemed tedious to plug in numbers constantly to get various effects rather than a slider, etc.
    and don't need to blend with page elements,
    LIke what do you mean in this case, "blending with page elements"?
    thanks!

  • Open as Smart Object as Layers in Photoshop?

    I apologize if this has been addressed already, but I am looking for a way to open Smart Objects as LAYERS.  I do compositing work and would like to retain as much information as possible by using Smart Objects PRIOR to going into Photoshop.  My current workflow is to highlight the photos in Lightroom CC > Open as Smart Object in Photoshop CC > Manually Drag layers from each open file in Photoshop to main PSD.
    Edit - Opening as Layers in Photoshop then applying the Camera Raw Filter is not a good work around, information is lost.

    davepinminn wrote:
    I must still be doing something wrong here..............
    You have the wrong expectation—namely because you don't grasp the concept. A smart object is not a linked file.  It's a new file all on its own (in PSB format) with no connection to the original file at all.
    davepinminn wrote:
    …I can open my raw (.dng) into Photoshop as a smart object.  And in PS, I can open the smart object into ACR.  Works fine.  And I can change stuff.  For example, if I change the exposure from -.25 to +.20, it changes perfectly in PS, as I'd expect.  But, I'm still not getting the changes back to the original raw (.dng) file…
    There is no reason why the changes made to a Smart Object oject should be refleftef to a totally unrelated file.
    davepinminn wrote:
    …Do I need to do something different to get the changes back to the original file…
    Yes. you have to go back to that original file and apply the changes directly to it.  In a previous post, Jeff Schewe told you of a shortcut to achieve that:
    Jeff Schewe wrote:
    When you are in the Camera Raw SO with ACR open, go to the main flyout menu and select Export settings to XMP. This will write the new image settings from the SO to the xmp metadata. Then in Lightroom, select Read metadata from file in the main Metadata menu. That will bring in all the settings of the raw SO back into Lightroom. So, while not automatic, it's not as bad as writing down the settings and entering them by hand.

  • Looking for a good tutorial or book for 3D composite

    Hi, I do editing for 3D animation at work (simple kind) and working along with 2 other 3D modelers.
    We recently came down to the conclusion that we need to composite to be able to render our animation.
    However, none of us really know how to do 3D composite, including myself.
    (I mean we know the simple composite using alpha channels and such... but not to the point to using z-depth or shadow maps... etc..).
    I was looking around online and book store to find out if there is any good resources for us to learn. I do not have much luck of it, unfortunately.
    I'd like to have our 3D modlers to know how to split to all different layers for a clean composite purpose.... (like for me to use in Shake ). From what I found out, higher end composite, you can split most of the gemoetries its own object IDs, and shadow map/layers, lighting layers... (even they render separetely, it do cast shadow as other objects surrounds it, or refection..) and then composite in one scene.
    I believe we create pretty good animation when we rendered them all together in one scene, and now we are up to the point that there are too many geometeries and render farm computers can't handle to render (and they are not lower end compters but they crash when we try to render with not enough memories).
    I'm not really looking for having real footage as background and 3D infront .. that kind of composite...
    If there is anyone can direct me to a right book? or online website to learn more of this stuff for all of us, I'll be really appriciate it.
    Thank you for your time...

  • How can I pre-compose layers via AEGP?

    Hello,
    I would like my AEGP to put some of the layers of the active composition into a pre-composition. Well, the far way I can think of would be to create a new composition, add it to the existing composition, add the footage items of all layers I want to have in my nested comp in there and copy every one of the god knows how many streams, flags and effects to the layers inside the comp.
    My question: isn't there an easier way to create nested compositions or at least copy layers with all their effects and so on to another place inside my project?

    Thank you. But still, nothing works. I have no idea why.
    I try to open a pre-composition I have just built and added to my main composition.

  • Quickly creating an intro to multiple compositions

    Thanks for checking out my post! He is an overview of what I'm trying to do:
    Take approximately 200 videos, insert a 10 second countdown (I have a pre-rendered video, but I don't have to use that particular one), and slow the videos down, and render them as individual videos.
    What I did before I realized a countdown was necessary for this project was drag all the clips to a new composition, apply time stretch, and use "rd_layers" to render out all the layers in a single composition. However, adding the countdown makes this more difficult, does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you!

    I take it that you have 200 video clips now slowed down and rendered to a single movie but you now want to insert a count down at the head of each of these 200 shots.
    That's not the way I would have approached the project at all. If there are no cuts inside each of the videos then there's a script that you can get that will look for each cut and slice up the videos into comps.
    If each of these 200 videos, which are now one longer video that is rendered, then:
    I hope you rendered to a lossless or nearly lossless codec to so that when you re-render you don't introduce a bunch of compression artifacts and spoil the look of the project.
    I hope you have some kind of easily identifiable mark or consistent time that is going to make it easy to make the 200 cuts necessary to separate the videos into individual pieces.
    The fastest way to add and render a countdown or slate to a video is to use a non linear editor like Premiere Pro or Final Cut. Most of the time a slate must contain information about the shot like the name, duration, and other pertinent information. You're going to be putting a fair amount of time into just creating the countdown and slates. Again, I'd do this in a NLE.
    Please tell us a little more about your project. Maybe we're misunderstanding what you want to do.

  • Unable to Arrange a Composition to Front

    New to muse, so Im sorry in advance if this is a stupid question.
    I have a composition that is collapsed until triggered that is placed in the header on the master sheet for a mobile site. It acts as my site nav.
    I set it "move to front", but when i trigger it in preview mode,  it always appears behind any text or images I have on the child pages. I have even set all the collateral on each page "move to back". And the composition still will not appear in front.
    Please help!

    Hi,
    In order to resolve this what you can do is use " Layers". Put the composition in the top most layer of your Muse file and you will be able to see it appear on top of the contents of your child pages.
    Please refer to this screenshot :-http://prntscr.com/4bxc6b

  • Pre-composed layers not consistantly casting shadows?

    So. I've been trowling through th interwebs for an answer and it appears a lot of people have come accross similar issues yet I am still to solve my little hiccup.
    I have a bunch of 3D layers sitting on a 3D plane. Everything was going swimmingly until I animated these layers in individual pre-compositions, when all the shadows disappeared. All shadow settings are set correctly, lights are in the right places, layers are separeted on Z axis and there are no effects on anything.
    I'll include some images so you get the gist:
    For some reason, 1 shadow is working. i've checked all the settings and nothing seems to be different between them.
    Here's a shot of the stats on the working comp:
    And one of a non-working comp:
    Now the pre-comps are no longer interacting with the ground at all. You can see the working one in the background is hanging out half way through the floor where as the front characters should be doing the same but aren't.
    And finally, for some reason, at the 7second mark, it suddenly works again!?
    Now, nothing changes at the 7 second mark, the camera and lights are in exactly he same place. None of the figures have moved, no comps have ended. what on earth is happening??
    Can anyone help me?

    what do you mean by toggling the visibility?
    They all have masks on them that fade them in however the originals had masks when they were just straight illustrator layers and the shadows worked fine then too.
    Heres an in-comp image of the timeline. there's not a whole lot going on and again, nothing at 7seconds.
    Also, here is a picture of the only comp within this comp that gets close to that 7 second mark. Again, nothing happens.
    All the character comps are set up the same so problems should be consistant across the board but again, one in the background of the first image i posted works yet none of the others. i've even duplicated this layer and the duplicates don't work.

  • Layers disappear when saving in CS6

    My layers disappear when I try to save in Photoshop CS6. They disappear when I get to the last step before saving(where you can select the quality and stuff). The effects stay, but they become kind of crappy. I've no idea how this happened either. I was just working on some pictures one by one, and then suddenly, it started happening. I did nothing differently.
    Reinstalling didn't help either. What the hell is going on?

    You're seeing normal behaviour/results. Most image file formats do not support layers and there can be subtle to huge differences in the display of a layered doc versus its flattened composite because Photoshop uses imprecise shortcuts to generate the composited display of a layered doc. The display discrepancies can be minimised by viewing at 100% zoom.
    While working on a document, check adjustment layers, effects and layer blending with zoom at 100% so there are no nasty surprises lurking in the doc. (Of course, I realise that there's a very good chance that you may be viewing only a small region of an image when zoom is 100%.)
    Regarding the JPEG save in particular: when you are at the stage of picking quality/compression, there is an option of previewing the result of the compression. JPEG doesn't support layers, hence the flattened composite at that stage. Your open doc will still be layered after you commit the save.

  • Illustrator layers into After Effects CS5

    A client supplied an eps Logo with one layer and many "sub-layers" (sorry, don't know Illustrator well enough to call them anything else but
    it's broken down to every tiny element such as every letter, portions of graphics, etc.),
    When importing into AE CS5, it just recognizes the one "layer" like it was flattened. How do I separate these other layers in AI or After Effects
    so I can animate them?

    You need to import the document as a composition to get access to the individual layers.

  • Composite and aggregation code example - is this correct

    after reading all the aggregation and composition of this forum threads, i would like to know whether this is the corect understading in java implmentation of composite and aggregation.
    example of aggregation
    public class Money{}
    public class Wallet {
    private Money money;
    public Wallet(Money money) {
    this.money = money;
    example of composite
    public class Heart {}
    public class Human {
    private Heart heart;
    private Human() {
    heart = new Heart();
    the aggregation implementation is based on the idea " The instance of aggregated class can be shared by many other classes. While those classes are deleted, the instance of aggreated class won't be deleted."
    hence, i create money object outside the wallet, the passed the money into the wallet to make them "has a" relationship.
    the composite implementation is based on the idea " the instance of composited class can only be used by one other class. While that class is deleted. The composited class will also be deleted."
    hence, the creattion of heart is done by the human constructor it self.
    1. is this the only ways to do the implementation for composite and aggregation?
    2. is there other implementations for aggregation, the money class is constructed inside the wallet class?
    3. is there other implementations for composition, the heart class is constructed outside the human class?
    thank you very much!

    Your abstractions are quite good.
    1. is this the only ways to do the implementation for composite and aggregation?Broadly speaking yes, there are as some subtle variations, but you examples illustrate the key distinction.
    2. is there other implementations for aggregation, the money class is constructed inside the wallet class?Yes, in practice you should also have methods to add and remove from an abstraction, so Wallet should have Wallet.add(Money) and Wallet.remove(Money) methods. You should also consider multiplicity, which may require that you use Qualified Classes and/or Associative Classes to implment an aggregation.
    No, you should not construct the Money inside the Wallet. If you find you want to do this you should consider changing to a Composite.
    3. is there other implementations for composition, the heart class is constructed outside the human class?Yes, it is usual to pass a this from the Composite (Human) to the part (Heart) when you construct it because Composition is implicitly a bi-directional relationship.
    No the part of a composite should not be constructed outside the composite.

  • Better way of managing heirarchical groupings?

    Sort of a feature request, but also a question to other users about different approaches you like to use.  I've often wished for a way of grouping layers in a heirarchy that is independant of layer order, like you can do in most 3D apps (or -ahem- node based compositing systems).
    The ony ways of grouping layers that I know if in AE are:
    1: Pre Comping (obviously creates a single layer from multipe layers, which has limitations in certain situations)
    2: Pre-Comping and collapsing gemetries (makes management easy, but still has limitations of layers being outside comp)
    3: Using nulls as parents (allows you to select, control and move groups of layers, but does not facilitate easy showing/hiding or re-use)
    4: Using expressions (often problematic if you are changing layer orders around a lot to accomplish a goal)
    5: Creating color-coded groups for easier selection (limited number of colors, doesn't help with anything besides selection)
    Each has advantages and disadvantages and accomplishes different goals.  I would love to be able to create groups of layers that could easily be hidden and shown in the layer panel; selected, copied, and re-used; contain expressions and parent/child relationships; and exist within a larger composition and be dispursed among other layers outside of the group.  Using Nulls as parents is the closest thing to what I would like to be able to do, but is a bit more convoluted than I think it needs to be.  It seems like the ability to put groups of layers into a "folder" that you could expand or collapse would be a helpful UI feature. If you could have a list of these "folders" in the Project window, similar to the way you have a list of solids, you could duplicate and re-use them in other comps, change the layer order around, etc, and still have a cohesive group of layers to manage as a unit.
    Let's say you build an animation that has 50 3D and 2D layers, several expressions, and a bunch of keyframes.  Maybe you would want to use it several times in different ways within a larger piece, but need to have access to all the layers in each instance.  Also, you don't want to see all of the layers in the layer panel at once--you only really care about them as a group.  One technique is to parent them all to a null, use select children to select them all at once, and shy layers to hide the layers you don't want to see in the layer pallette.  The downside is that if there are already parented layers within the group it becomes very tricky not to screw up the heirarchy or any expressions.  You're creating the null for no other purpose than to manage a bunch of layers as a group, but it can interfere with the relationships among them if you're not careful.  Also, shy layers only gives you one level of showing and hiding to work with, which can be limiting if you have loads of layers in a comp.  Simply pre-comping them, and then using collapse-geometries can work in certain situations, but it limits your ability to use things like track mattes, adjustment layers, shadows, and other relationships that require layers to be in the same comp.
    Hopefully that makes some kind of sense.  Please share any insights you have on the tao of managing complex groups of layers so that we all may learn!

    ALSO: to be able to turn the layers on and off as a group would be great--very important point I forgot to mention in the previous post.  If you have layers hidden and you use "select children," turning the parent layer on and off does nothing to them.

  • Media manager adding frames

    i'm trying to export 4 layers of video (rough composite layer, blue screen layer, matte layer and background layer) with media manager. i need to send these shots to compositors to make the final composites. i'm using media manager because it seems like the easiest way to give them what they need as separate files. i want to create new quicktimes of the shots in my sequence at exactly the same length as they appear in my edit (no handles).
    when i try to export with media manager, the sequence that it creates is the same as my sequence but the quicktime clips that it creates are not. media manager has somehow added 4 frames to the head of the clip on layer 1 and 9 frames to the head of layer 2. i need for the compositors to be able to line up the layers by just lining up the heads of the shots.
    my media manager settings are:
    -"copy media referenced by duplicated items"
    -"include master clips outside selection" is NOT checked on
    -"delete unused media from duplicated items" IS checked ON
    -"use handles" is NOT checked on
    -"include affiliate clips outside selection" is NOT checked on
    -"base media file names on existing file names"
    -"duplicate selected items and place into a new project" IS checked ON
    -"include nonactive multiclip angles" IS checked ON
    footage and sequence are: AJA Kona LHi: 1080psf 23.98 Apple ProRes 422
    any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi Brian,
    Thanks for replying.
    I am working on an animation edit. The clients send us a master QT with audio. I export the audio for animation lipsync, the animators then send me QTs with the audio I have exported embedded within them. The clients have the original audio and have requested that the QTs we send back contain just picture.
    The delivery specs state I need to send a project and media to the client.
    There are no audio clips in my timeline apart from the QT sent by the clients. In my edit I add our animations above the client QT and send the sequence. Before, when I was using QTs with audio I was not cutting the audio into the sequence just using the audio from the master QT the clients sent. My new QTs (with no audio) are being dropped onto the timeline on a higher video track but when I export them they add '-v' at the end which does not fit into the clients naming convention.
    I hope that made sense, any help is greatly appreciated.
    Tom.
