Layers Resources

Ive been in the Web and Graphic Design Field for 3 years now,
Im getting much heavier into my web work and am looking for
resources on designing web pages in layers. The reason Im asking is
Ive read a bunch of material alot of just dreamweavers support
material on their table and layer usage. The current project I am
working on is redesigning my companies current website. The site
design is quite old and the coding seems quite old as well. So I am
revising the design and the back end. Im debating on designing the
full layout in just tables or layers or a combination of layers. I
need to design in a format that will be consistent between
browsers. Any ideas on an approach?

Hi Jakub,
I can think of two changes you can make that can help.
1. You don't mention what architecture your office version is. I would suggest you use 64 bit Excel. It has a higher memory threshold and performs much better when using a lot of memory.
2. Install all of the latest CU updates for Office. There has been dozens of bug fixes for PowerPivot and Power View since the last release.
You mention you can share the workbook. Feel free to send to me at
[email protected] and I would be willing to take a look and see if the crashes are known issues or already fixed.

It takes 44 seconds from first hitting the power button to my desktop appearing, it's not until around 22 seconds that anything even appears on my screen and the POST process starts so I don't think this is Windows related etc? I have tried with and without RAPID mode on my SSD and strangely it's actually 2secs quicker with RAPID OFF, either way 44 seconds is extremely slow for Windows 8 on an SSD?!
Worth noting that I had the exact same slow boot times while on my previous non EVO SSD and Windows 7 on this exact PC, have now just updated to Windows 8.1 on a brand new SSD but still have slow boot so guessing its something BIOS or MOBO related?
I've posted a video in the hope that maybe the LED indicator on the mobo might help someone point me in the right direction?

My system takes ~15 secs from Power button to desktop display (I'm booting from a somewhat slow Seagate Sata 2 320GB drive)--of course stuff is still loading at this point in the background.  My Windows 8.1 Start up-sequence boot timer says ~12 secs--but I don't think that is right and think it's cheating a wee bit...  Anyway, just looking at this stuff here's what stands out to me:
*You don't need the CD/DVD device ahead of your Windows boot drive in the boot order.  I only do that when I specifically have to boot from DVD for some reason,  which isn't that often.  By knocking back the DVD drive in the boot order it shaves maybe a couple of secs since there's no check for bootable DVD disk done before the boot is handed off to your really fast boot drive--and hey, if you *do* have a DVD disk just sitting in there that you don't want to boot from (this is my situation far more than I need to boot from the DVD drive)--that can take a couple more seconds, I think.  Where it really costs you boot time is when you have a bootable disk in the DVD drive that you don't want to boot from...  The "....hit any key to boot from DVD" will maybe 8-10 seconds to your boot.  Best policy: Don't put the DVD drive first in the boot order.  This one is minor, though,  compared to the next one:
*Your list of start-up programs is roughly 3x longer than mine...  I can see there are several programs running in your boot sequence that are entirely unnecessary in getting your machine up and properly booted--and every one of those unnecessary proggy's takes time to load through--during the boot process.  Most of those programs will easily run after boot when you need them to run--they just don't need to be run at boot-up.  Try disabling a bunch of them selectively until you get the reduction in boot time you're looking for.  I just checked my boot sequence in the 8.1 task manager...I have 11 programs in the sequence BUT...8 (eight) of them are disabled...!  They have nothing material to do with my boot so why should I let them clog up the boot process? I think you can make big time gains there. Another waste of boot time is stuff like QT task--you can update manually whenever you want after you boot--doesn't need to clog up the boot process, imo. You'll be surprised by how much you can excise from that program list without noticing it except in faster boots. (I don't run MSI fast boot, either.)
You are certainly right, though--your boot shouldn't be taking nearly so long.  Fortunately, it appears there's a lot your can do about it..!  Oh, yea--take AVG and shove it through the nearest window...  Be kind to yourself.  In 8.1, Defender is more powerful than MSE in 7 and Vista and XP, and MSE is not only great at protection, it also has a very light footprint and is the very antithesis of AVG in terms of being the sort of invasive, layered, resource hog that AVG is (at least, in my experience.)  He who travels light travels best, etc...

  • "Powermaps needs more resources to complete this operation" error. 2 datasets 100 rows. one tour. two layers

I'm working on some BI mashups to demo the powerbi offerings to potential clients, but I get close to 20+ crashes a day relating to memory issues
I'm utilising powerquery to import and filter data from 2 rss feeds. Each are at most 100 rows. I then add these to a powerpivot model & have two powerview reports over this.
I've added a powermap to the solution but find the reliability to be very poor. If it does manage to work the colours of the bubbles and bars sometimes don't match the defined colours or they're black (a telltale sign of memory problems in windows). This
usually breaks the whole excel 'process' and I can't save the workbook. I get "workbook not saved" errors or that "there was a problem saving with all the features added. Click continue and save as a different file"
either that or i get a hard crash like I did while writing this post:

Memory amount is not a problem according to resource manager; excel process taking ~500mb and 70% free ram. I left memtest86+ running overnight and it found no errors in 8 passes so it looks like my sticks are ok. I have sql server 2008r2 & 2012
along with all the bells (db engine, ssis, ssas) installed and that never gives me hard memory failures even when I drive it hard. Obviously if i try to process a data model that's too big it gives me out of mem errors but that's expected and it doesn't crash
SSDT or the SSAS\Tabular instance. The services are off while I'm doing the excel powerbi work.

  • Merge to Panorama, HDR Pro, and Open as Layers Fails in CC 2014

I have had this issue for months.
There have been 2 updates to CC 2014 and still the issue remains.
I have uninstalled all versions of Photoshop and Lightroom and re-installed CC 2014 and LR. Still the problem remains.
I have read, in other posts on this forum, that the problem was addressed and that the up to date version now works correctly. This is not true for me.
I am unable to use Merge to Pano, HDR, or open as layers regardless of whether I try to do it from within Photoshop or from Lightroom.
All of the dialogs to open the images behave correctly: in PS, the dialogs take me through opening the files and allow me to select them and then click OK. But then the dialog window closes and nothing happens.
Same is true from Lightroom; I get a warning about the Camera Raw plugin (which is at 8.0.0.) but then it opens the merge dialog window and gives me the proper options and after I click OK, the dialog window closes and nothing happens.
To be perfectly clear, when I say "nothing happens, I mean NOTHING." The program does not lock up, no files open, no errors, nothing... I can watch my resource meters and they don't even twitch.
    So, what's next?

Online chat came through with a correct fix for the problem:
    Camera Raw plug-in installer

  • Take 2_Newbie question re. tables/frames/layers

    Hi all
I have created this as a new post as the original one by

    them for every page.
I tried frames, but couldn't get the images to lineup and all
the separate HTML files to work; besides, the book says to avoid
frames. Then I tried layers, but neither Firefox nor IExplorer
displayed my basic layout properly; I didn't even get as far as
hyperlinking the regions. I was able to create the desired effect
with tables, but I can't seem to figure out how to update only one
cell of the table when clicking the different hotspots in the
adjacent sidebar cell -- is this even possible?
    I have a similar query:
I am trying to create a online folio where you click an image

I believe this uses frames. Is there a way to do this kind of

quite what I was looking for.
I have read may other posts about this subject and most point
to pre made galleries. I am happy to have each image as a separate
page. All I want to do is have a link and when it is clicked it
opens somewhere else on the pages without the rest of the page
jumping. When I create each image on a separate page (eg
image1.html, image2.html) with the same navigation setup on each
page it flicks as the each page loads. I really like how in the
example i posted you click the text link on the left and the image
opens to the right - how can i do this?

  • Issue With Adding Layers - Please Help!

I am having an issue where Photoshop is not allowing me to add any kind of new layer to images that I'm editing.  It won't allow it while it's a .NEF or after it's become a .PSD.  If I open an image that already contains layers and is saved as a .PSD, then it allows me to add layers no problem.  If I start a new blank document it will allow me to add layers.  It's just not allowing me to do it with files that have been imported within the last week.  It doesn't seem like a system resource issue since it allows me to add layers to older files.  If you have any thoughts on this please help!
    I am running:
Adobe Photoshop Elements Language Version: 8.0.0 (8.0 (20090905.r.605812))

Well... sort of fixed it.  Apparently my system doesn't like editing images with a color depth of 16bit.  If I convert it down to 8 when I'm converting it from RAW, then it allows me to add layers... Is this normal?
    Thank you for your time,

  • A Problem with Layers

I am having a problem with layers in different browsers. I
have a menubar with some drop-down items. Some of these need to
fall over other page objects such as GIFs. The problem is that in
order for that to render correctly in IE, I have to set the z-index
of the GIF to -1. However a GIF set to -1 doesn't render at all in
Netscape. If I set the z-index to 0 it works fine in Netscape but
not in IE. Has anyone dealt with this problem???

Ugh. You are in deep doody.
Your only option now is to hack mm_menu.js, and change all
    instances of -
    z-index="1"
    to -
    z-index="99"
But - perhaps it would help if you read what the 'author' of
    that menu code
(he adapted it, actually) says about the menus -
    http://www.losingfight.com/blog/2006/08/11/the-sordid-tale-of-mm_menufw_menujs/
In addition, this page will show you the potential problem of
    building with
    only layers -

It opened up very quickly and loaded all the media much faster then our old workstation.
Then I hit the spacebar (perview) and the problems started..
It won't play back smoothly at all,
AND it is only running the CPU at 10-20%, GPU 10-50%, ram at 25% and it is not really taxing the drives very hard either...
Why won't PP use all the resources at 100% like I have previously seen it do on other machines?
** The project we are trying to play is 2 layers of 4k .MOV footage in a 1080 timeline... with sharpening, Fast color corrector, and RGB curves.
** It also drops every fourth frame when playing back just one layer of 4k .mov footage in a 1080 timeline with NO Effects applied. (Much smoother, but still not using all resources)
What I am asking, is why would it be giving up so quickly? Before even taxing the resources very hard?

I too have a recent 1D-C project I'm editing.  That 1D-C is something, yes?  Most filmic images I've ever seen from a DSLR.  But I digress.
I'm following a workflow closer to the one used by Philip Bloom and Shane Hurlbut.  The Motion Jpeg files will not play well at all on your system.  It's strictly a capture medium - not an editing one.
I converted all my 1D-C files to Prores 422 at 4K size using Mpeg Streamclip.  Those files imported beautifully and edit well on my Retina Macbook Pro laptop.  I usually set playback to 1/2 quality, ps.
I have had problems using CUDA, so I'm sticking to software mode.  But I don't see any problem with being able to cut my film and finish on my computer.
Also - my sequence is a 4K sequence right in Premiere.  I simply chose a clip and "made a sequence" from that.  Why scale when I don't have to?  I've exported to 1080p easily from the sequence.
If anyone finds this workflow less than ideal, I'm all ears.  Thanks.

  • How Do You Use Layers in Adobe Photoshop Elements 6?

I enjoy merging photos and such together so I can create really neat images, but I am not sure how to do that with this program. I checked out the Help section, but it didn't really help me. Maybe someone on here can. Thanks!
    -Rebecca

You are asking a huge question. You'll get a better response if you ask something specific about a problem you are having with layers.
I'm not trying to be mean but you can find vast amounts of basic info on layers with a simple Google query. If you click the Video link after inputting a search query, you can even find video tutorials.  YouTube  is one place that has quite a few video tutorials.
How layers work hasn't changed between Elements versions.  Layers work the same in Photoshop. The application interfaces may be slightly different but layers are layers.
FWIW, I'm not a big fan of the manual. You're better on getting something like "The Missing Manual" by Barbara Brundage or looking for info on the Internet.  One free resource with tons of info can be found here:
    http://www.garymgordon.com/misc/tutorials/photoshop_tutorial/elements/psE_intro.htm
The tutorials found at the above link use an older version of Elements so you won't find info on the newest tools and features but the basic Editor info on layers and the tools still apply.

  • Can't open PSD! "Could not complete your request because the required resources were not found."

    Hi all,
I am having some serious issues with Photoshop CC and have alread lost a few days of work to a random bug. I have spent the whole day working on Photoshop to try and catch up on the lost work.
I was saving the PSD, closed the document and then tried to reopen it to make a quick change and I got this error: "Could not complete your request because the required resources were not found.". I am now unable to open the PSD.
Has anyone ever seen this and does anyone know if there is a way of resolving the problem?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Leigh

I found a hack-y way to work around this problem without losing work!
So I discovered fairly quickly that this is an unsolved problem that  NO ONE can explain the cause of.  Here are step-by-step instructions on how to save your layers without losing progress.
Convert ALL of your layers to a Smart Object.
    Right-click on the Smart Object
    Click "Export Contents..."
This opens up a Save As... Window, with your file name .PSB
    Name & Save.
I then quit Photoshop CS, re-opened, and had all of my layers, folders, and effects intact.  The only problem was that my Canvas was as large as my biggest layer (extending beyond my original canvas).  Just find the original background layer (or one that originally filled your canvas), Select it (Command + Click on the Layer thumbnail), and Crop it (Image > Crop).
    Hope this helps.

  • Inserting Layers

    Hi,
I want to use layers within a static background, instead of
changing pages to navigate through my site.
My dreamweaver MX help function is not working.
Can anyone please tell me how to insert layers & navigate
    between them?
    Thankyou!
    Laini

This is a very bad idea. You will wind up with one huge page,
    that acts
like a slug, and that nobody can bookmark....

  • Is it possible to use 3D files in layers?

I have few 3D files that I convered from STL to PDF. I would like to create a 1 page PDF where I have the 3D files in layer, and the customer should be able to disable layers, and in that way see the progress. Is it possible to do with Acrobat Professional? If yes, how can I do it exactly? I'm attaching 2 files (originally I would like to put 4 3D models in each PDF).
    http://www.mediafire.com/?q2bi4fnz1i63p3f,iucaq8rh6cv4zra
    Thank you

Either put all the meshes into the same U3D file, or load them as Resource objects using JavaScript. You can show/hide the parts and define a new view from the 3D toolbar, or use scripting to set the visibility of each node in the model (by searching for its name).
Doing it without scripting is the easier option, but assumes you can assemble your models into a single U3D file. Scripting the entire thing is more complex but allows you to work with whatever U3D files you already have - we'll have a tutorial on how to do it later this month, but if you're a total newcomer to Acrobat JS you'll probably need to hire an expert.

  • Cannot add layers/tables to an editable region

I created a template the other day, and then created pages
from that template. The main editable region which was meant to be
for all my info, pictures, wont let me add layers or tables to
position my text/images.... Have I missed something here?
    \Robert

Yes, there would be no restriction on what you can place in
    that editable
region. But I don't like the way you have started with this
    page. Layers
should not be used as a primary layout methodology....

  • Layers with rollovers

I am creating a organizational chart with rollovers that
contain a picture and contact information. When I rollover a
person's area on the chart, their info pops up in a rollover box.
But since it is a org chart, the people's names need to be close
together so I end up getting someone's area in front of a rollover.
If I select move to front for the other rollover, then someone
elses info gets blocked. Is there a way to keep the rollovers on
top of the document and have the chart always behind the rollovers
so no one gets their info blocked?

Don't use the show/hide at all. Use SetText of Layer to write
    the required
    content into a single layer.
Or - if you don't quite get that, just use PVII's AutoLayer
    extension which
will show one and hide all the rest automatically.

  • Layers in DW not working! HELP!!!!

Don't know what's going on with my DW MX 2004. I created
layers with no problems until now. I'm in the right mode (Layout,
Standard) when I click on the Layer icon (or use Insert, Layout
Objects, Layer) nothing happens on the page, and can't draw it and
nothing appears.DW just does not place the layer on the page. I
went into behaviours "Set Events For" and set to various IE 4.0,
5.0, 6.0 etc, nothing, hoping that this will help solve the
problem. All I get this in my Head Tag <MMString:LoadString
id="insertbar/layer" />. I thought of reinstalling DW, but it
works fine otherwise. No changes were made to my computer or DW,
except that I downloaded IE 7 (but don't see why this would matter
in this case). HELP! Getting frustrated and annoyed!

Bug in DW? No, I don't think so. Need to be reinstalled?
    That's what I'm
thinking too. Give it a try, please - make sure you uninstall
    first (and
also make sure you backup your site definitions using DW's
    EXPORT facility
    first).
