Layout with 2 components on oposite sides of JFrame

Hello all,
I feel like I'm missing something really obvious, but I've been trying to layout a JPanel which extends the whole width of my JFrame and contains a button on either side. i.e.
left frame edge-> | |button| <empty space here> |button| | <-right frame edge
I'm pretty sure I could pull this off with SpringLayout, but I need to support Java 1.3.1 in this app.
I'm also pretty sure that I could do something like this:
JPanel leftSide = new JPanel( new FlowLayout( FlowLayout.LEFT ) );
leftSide.add(new JButton("left") );
JPanel rightSide = new JPanel( new FlowLayout( FlowLayout.RIGHT ) );
rightSide.add(new JButton("right") );
CustomSizeAwarePanel magic = new CustomSizeAwarePanel( parentComponent, new BorderLayout() );
magic.add( leftSide, BorderLayout.WEST );
magic.add( leftSide, BorderLayout.EAST );where CustomSizeAwarePanel is aware of the parent Components width and resizes itself appropriately.
... but I have the nagging feeling that there is an easier way to do this.
thanks all,
Steven

Thanks for the thoughts!
I have used GridBag extensively in the past and didn't even consider that it would do what I was looking for. Ironically enough, I even have my GridBagHelper classes laying around which could make this a little easier. :)
I was just typing in psuedo code and fouled up by not specifying the right button. The problem I was having with Border Layout was that the parent component (holding the two buttons) would resize itself to be as small as possible, squishing the two buttons in the middle of the screen. I played around with putting an extremely large component in the BorderLayout.CENTER, but that did not size correctly.
What I ended up with was implementing the 'magic' class that resized itself to the parent components width and the child components height. This seems to be working well, but if anyone sees issues....
Anyway, The code is worth a thousand words...
//simple calling code
     JPanel customPanel = buildCustomByPanel();
     //You need to pass in the tallest component as the child
     ParentWidthComponent northCentralPanel = new ParentWidthComponent( this.getContentPane(), customPanel, new BorderLayout());
     northCentralPanel.add( customPanel, BorderLayout.WEST );
     northCentralPanel.add( viewOtherAttrCheck, BorderLayout.EAST );
     centerPanel.add( BorderLayout.NORTH, northCentralPanel );
//class code
import java.awt.Container;
import java.awt.Dimension;
import java.awt.BorderLayout;
import javax.swing.JComponent;
import javax.swing.JPanel;
public class ParentWidthComponent extends JPanel {
     protected Container parent;
     protected JComponent child;
     public ParentWidthComponent ( Container componentWidth, JComponent componentHeight ) {
          super();
          parent = componentWidth;
          child = componentHeight;
     public ParentWidthComponent (  Container componentWidth, JComponent componentHeight, BorderLayout manager ) {
          super(manager);
          parent = componentWidth;
          child = componentHeight;
     public Dimension getPreferredSize () {
          return  new Dimension( (int)parent.getSize().getWidth(), (int)child.getPreferredSize().getHeight() );
     }Thanks again for the suggestions.

  • How to get a specific layout with the available layout managers?

    Hi
    Not done java GUI's (approximately 5 and a half years) for a while (I havn't even touched java for ages until a few months ago), and I am a little embarrased by how much I have forgotten.
    After tring unsuccessfully several times with TableLayouts and GridBagLayouts to produce this [ [http://i32.tinypic.com/fl94kp.png] ] sort of layout, I have decided I am either being incredibly stupid, or It's a rather difficult thing to do.
    (Sorry about the crudeness of the drawing)
    Please can someone point me on the right track as to what combination of layout managers + components I should be using to achive this, or even be super kind and post a code snippet for it.
    Preferably, I would like to use just the default layout manages / components that come with java, which will allow me to continue working on the GUI in netbeans without it complaining, but I'll use external libraries if absolutely nesecarry.
    Thanks
    A completely unrelated side note, but where the heck have all my past posts and dukes gone. :(

    Yes, A BorderLayout did solve my problems. It appears I was being stupid after all. :)
    @Encephalopathic. Using a gridbaglayout does indeed help with the centering issue for the smaller panel on the right. I had just worked that out myself when you posted. I had been reluctant to try the gridbaglayout for that, because it caused me a load of pain when I tried using it for the original problem.
    Thanks

  • SAP BO Dashboards 4.1 best practice on layout and components

    Dear SCN,
    I have requirement to create a BO 4.1 dashboard with data & Visualization based on a excel sheet which is currently in use as a Mgmt dashboard. The current excel dashboard is having more than 100 KPIs in one view which is readable only if you put in on a slide and view it in full screen by running a slideshow.
    Question 1:
    1. Being the suggested size of the Xcelsius canvas not more than 1024 X 768 so that it is viewable with out scroll bar in BI launchpad or in any browser or in pdf, I am trying to confirm in this forum that the canvas size of 1024 X 768 is the recommended maximum size for the dashboard to get the clear view in any browser/BI launchpad . Pls confirm as it will help me in doing the design for the KPIs and its visualization.
    Question 2:
    1. I am using the BICS connection and accessing the source data from BW. Because the no. of KPIs are more and ranging between 10 cubes and 40 queries as the data is across different modules, I would like to know what is the recommended no. of connections for queries /cubes in dashboard using BICS connectivity which does not affect the performance
    2. For the same dashboard using BICS connection, What is ideal number of components like Charts/Scorecard/Spreadsheet table that is recommended to use to ensure better performance?
    I appreciate your answers which can help the finalization of the dashboard design for this dashboard of data and visualization requirements which is very high when compared to the normal dashboards.
    Thanks and Regards
    Jana

    Hi Suman,
    Thanks for your answers.You answers and links which you have attached are helpful and It answered my questions related to canvas size and Connections.
    I am expecting some benchmark numbers as per the best practices with respect to the No. of components to be used to ensure the better loading of the dashboard. As the increase in number of components increase the size of the dashboard and also it requires more time to load the data for the components, I am looking for the number as per the best practice by considering the below points.
    1. When I say the no. of components, I am not considering the components like label, text box,combo box or list box. I am considering the components which is used for visualization and interactive drill down on top of the visualized charts ( For Eg. Column charts, Pie charts, Gauges ).
    2.I am not going to use more calculations/formulas in my dashboards as the values and structure are almost the same with the BEx query.
    3.Having around 10 to 12 connections.
    4.The data sets are not more than 900 rows totally. For any control, we will be binding only 100 rows at the max as the data for the KPIs are summarized at the year/month level at the BW layer.
    Since the KPIs are more, the Visualizations are more and we can't re-use the Visualization charts for most of the KPIs. Currently I am ending up with ~35 charts/ gauges along with other label and selection controls which I will be using to show 100 KPIs with unique visualization requirements and I am going for the tab-wise layout with more dynamic to accommodate and separate logically.
    Hope these details will give clear picture of why I am looking for the Benchmark on No. of components .
    I appreciate your help!
    Thanks and Regards

  • Layout with insertcomponent

    Hi all,
    I'm inserting components in a JTextPane using the insertComponent method.
    How can I use a layout with that? I want to have 2 items at the top and one at the bottom, when I resize my window, the components are shifted into one line
    Thanks a lot

    You don' use layout managers with a JTextPane. The text "flows" from one line to the next. A component is just considered part of the text.

  • Problems with components in frames

    I have my applet (applet-application hybrid, actually) make a Frame and then add a few Components to it, like a Textfield and a Checkbox and a few buttons. On my Macintosh, everything renders fine, but in Windows, it will never draw the textfield or checkbox, only the buttons. Any idea why this is happenning? I'm sure the components are created and added and drawn in the Paint method of the frame, but they never show up and if they do they flicker on and off.
    This brings up another point that has been frustrating me ever since I started working with Components. Why can I only call setSize() or setLocation() within certain methods? To clarify, if I implement Runnable, and I try to setLocation in init(), it will fail, but in run() it works fine.
    I'm sure these are dumb questions, but from my perspective Java is doing a lot of stupid things that are merely confusing and frustrating me. It seems like once you set some attribute of an object it should remain like that. Why would the location of a checkbox or a button or a list change from init to run? It makes no sense to me and it forces me to make silly workarounds. This crap with frames and paint are so ridiculous that I can't even figure out a work around.
    Please help. I'm on the brink of scrapping this entire GUI that I've been slaving over. I'll post some cleaned up code if anyone wants to see what I'm talking about.

    Some layout managers doesn't care about setSize and setLocation is only needed when you build a GUI without a layout manager (setLayout(null)).
    And if your gui flickers, then it sounds like you are calling repaint in your paint method (that could be one cause).
    The most configurable layout manager is the GridBagLayout, but may not be easy to use if you haven't tried it before.

  • Line Layout with Reference Key in F-03

    Dear all,
    Iu2019m facing the following problem.
    I modified the line layouts for F-03 through O7Z4S. In particular I created a line layouts with the field Reference key 1. The problem is that in F-03, using this variant, the field XREF1 appeared always blank. The same thing happens for XREF2 while for XREF3  everthing is ok.
    Is something that I forgot in customizing?
    Thanks in advance

    Dear Alberto,
    I created the same - Reference Key in IDES it works if you create with text and then insert Reference key as part of Field with this.
    Hope this would surely help...

  • How do I create a crystal report layout with a table and borders

    My crystal report is a signin sheet. The sign in sheet has an ID column, Name column, Institution column, Place to signin column, and Weekday columns with checkboxes in each column for the visitor to checkoff.
    How do I display the data that is being used int he crystal report in a table layout with borders around each cell? And is it possible to center vertical alignment of the data within eacvh cell like Excel?

    Blahahaha! Great answer Deb!
    Seriously though... There is no vertical alignment in CR. There have been several past threads related to this issue and all of them have various workarounds. None of them are very elegant.
    The best workaround I've found (especially if you are grid or borders) is to turn off the boarders for the field itself and drawl a rectangle around the field(s). Now you can place the field in the lower portion of the rectangle and adjust the rectangles height to place the field text in the center of the rectangle.
    This will give you more control over the height of your elements than using a carriage return before the text.

  • How to display 2 layouts with 2 different Header and Footer in a template.

    Hi,
    I am using XML Publisher 5.5. I have created one template which is having two layouts. I am using <?Start: Body?> and <?end body?> for displaying Headers and footers. Now my problem is, I need to display first layout with it's associated Header and footer and then second layout with other header and footer. But the two layouts should come in single template file. How is it possible?. Is there any work around? Please help me as this is the urgent requirement to my client.
    Thanks.
    Siva.

    No problem. Select Insert -> Break from the menu bar. Then select a "Section Break" - Next page.
    Header 1
    <?start:body?>
    Page 1
    <?end: body?>
    Footer 1
    ==================Section Break (Next Page)=================
    Header 2
    <?start:body?>
    Page 2
    <?end: body?>
    Footer 2
    Worked like a charm.

  • How to use a table to layout af components?

    i've been trying to figure out how to use a regular table
    to layout some components that are not databound ..
    I couldn't figure out how to use simple html
    Ie: the verbatim tag didn't like having unclosed tags...
    so i couldn't compile
    <f:verbatim>
    <table><tr><td>
    </f:verbatim>
    then my af controls
    i tried using a <af:table value="{1,2}">
    so it could render a row...
    but there is no <TR> equivalent... and it shows the column headings..
    and the presence of the table is too obvious (scroll bar .etc. and have
    to do a ton of css classes to make headers disappear..etc)
    anyway to nicely layout controls?

    Try the h:panelGrid component.

    Can anyone help me regarding this matter? I do not know how to turn off the decimal number to be 0 in this type of layout, although in the form itself I already put 0 decimal number.

  • ALV Standard Layout with problem for excel download

    Hi, i have a alv grid report with this problem:
    I execute the report and see all data ok.
    chose the download option to spreadsheet.
    *When open the spreadshet only see headers and no data.
    The report have a standard Layout with 4 of 12 column selected, if i execute this report and add a new column for the pool the download works fine, if i save this new layout as default and execute the report again the download don't work fine.
    ¿Some idea? Thxs

    Just a wild guess. In your system, check the MS excel security settings. Excel->File->options->Trust center settings. We had some similar issues with excel columns visibility when you click on the ALV spreadsheet button or download which was corrected by changing the trust center settings. I don't exctly remember which settings affect this. You may have to compare the settings with another system (If it works fine in some other system which was the case in our issue). Pls ignore if not relevant.

  • Fluid Grid Layout with Sidebar

    I am fairly new to dreamweaver and trying to build a fluid grid layout with a sidebar which needs to span the full height of the website and I am having trouble. I cant get the sidebar to span multiple columns using the fluid grids. I know I can do it with pure css using display options but wanted to know if. Can do it visually using dreamweaver's built in tools and UI.
    Can someone point out if I am going about this correctly? I can provide more info if needed.
    Thanks.

    I started using FGL when first introduced. In the meantime they have improved quite a bit, but I was so taken aback that I decided not to go down that path again.
    I have used Foundation and am now using Bootstrap. Although I would prefer to use the former as I think that it is better, the general trend is towards Bootstrap.
    You can start with the free of charge Bootstrap extension.

  • How to bring Windows 7 snap window to OS X to work with two apps/ docs side

    I quite like the feature that windows 7 has to allow working with documents or applications side by side filling the screen. I know that i can resize each window but it seems a little fiddly and i'm thinking there must be a way to have it automated.
    How can i get this feature. Could automator be used although i haven't used it before. Had a look at it before and find it a little confusing as i don't know how to use it.
    Or are there any applications?
    Would love your help.

    your best bet is sending apple a feature request
    I agree. That would be a cool feature.
    Kind of like a refinement of what Spaces does. Being able to sub divide the screen into work areas.
    With screens getting so large it would be very useful.
    yes, but I wouldn't bet a lot of money on apple implementing it. OS X has its own host of features like spaces and exposé and implementing this one might be too much like copying Windows which they hate to do...
