Leading question - ID2

I'm a little rusty on ID and have a quick question. Is it possible to have different leading settings for paragraph breaks than line breaks? For example:
The leading between this line and the paragraph below is say 18pt
...and the leading for the lines in this paragraph
is different say 14pt
Basically I want to be able to have a gap between paragraph headings without the need for a whole extra line, and without having to go and edit the leading for each new heading. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check the options for "Space Before" or "Space After" in the Paragraph Palette. May have to turn on 'More Options' in the palette menu to see them.

PS. did you mean ID2, or IDCS2 (ID4)? Answer is the same either way, but CS2 has the Control Palette, which also can be used to edit the Space Before/After.
That setting is also available in the Paragraph Styles, if you use them.

CS3 Leading Question

Hey everyone,
I'm new here, and have a quick question. Any help will be really appreciated.
I was given an exercise book by a publishing house to do some corrections in.
The book was designed by another designer they had a falling out with.
The other designer has used a leading effect i'm not familiar with. I'm posting a screenshot:
As you can see the leading for all the text is 13.5pt, but paragraph 1.13 and 1.14 have a bigger gap between them than the regular lines of text.
How is this achieved?

It should be defined as part of the paragraph style, but since the designer didn't seem to know how to set a left indent on a paragraph and started things with tabs, it may not be. There's a section in the style definition dialog called Indents and Spacing where you would do it. It's also possible that instead of space before for the numbered paragraph, space AFTER was applied to the paragraphs with the arrow bullet. Fields for space before and after are accessible in both the Paragraph and Contol panels, so if you put the cursor in a paragaph you should be able to see what is applied (but not whether it is local formatting or part of the style). You'll need to do some looking.
I would also re-define the styles, myself, so there are proper left indents instead of leading tabs (and get rid of the leading tabs using find/change) and set a next style cycle for the three styles involved in that list, so that if you type in new entries they will automatically rotate through the three styles for each entry.

Character return leading question

Hi there! Forgive me if this has been answered peviously but i can't seem to find a thread with the answer i was looking for. I won't go into the specifics, as i think the question should be enough!
Is there a way of stopping InDesign creating larger leading when i choose to press "enter" (or "return") at the end of a line rather than letting the text just automatically flow over onto the next line?! I have tried selecting the whole paragraph and setting the leading that way but that doesn't work. I have viewed the invisible characters and made sure all the leading is set the same...but if i press enter (return), it always puts a larger leading gap than if i was to just let the text continue.

Ah ok, so it would seem my keeping the question simple tactic isn't working. To further explain in that case....
Here are the ins and outs of everything:
I had been given a document created in Quark which needed to be converted to InDesign. I did the conversion successfully . I am having to re-create all the tables correctly as in Quark it wasnt really tables, just a series of lines with tabbed text (i know, nightmare!).
The paragraph and character styles seem to have all copied over ok, and i can't see anything set up that would be creating the problem.
Here is the best way to describe the problem:
I have a cell in a table in which the text reads "Pallet Product Code". I need "pallet" to be on the top line, and "product code" to be (in the same cell) underneath it. The width of the cell means it automatically lays itself out as "palllet product" with "code" underneath. So i go to in front of the word "product" and i press enter. Doing so creates a larger leading gap between the two lines than when it was just left alone. So if i opt for just putting in a load of spaces to shove the word "product" over onto the next line it all looks fine, but if i press enter - doom! Well, not doom, just bigger leading...i guess i could just deal with it or reduce the leading lower again to make it look right...but i like to do things properly.
If i quadrouple click the leading is all set to the same value in the cell. I'm thinking this should be something really simply to sort out and i must be missing something silly....but here's hoping!
P.S I am using CS3, on Mac os x 10.5.8

Is there a reason why I cannot get the sentences in my paragraphs closer together? See the image, anyone?

If converted to points, it is 7.93 pt on my screen. I have also entered in the preferences my monitor's ppi to make Photoshop display physical sizes to be equal the size of a real life ruler.
I can even enter 0.5 pixels for font size and still no problem with adjusting the leading, Photoshop displays some representation of anti-aliased text lines which obviously are impossible to read.

Basic leading questions

1. I created a text area box in CS6 at 18pt and it seems to have automatically set the leading to 21.6. Does AI set the leading for all text automatically based on the font size and the font selected? Does the font designer set this so that the leading is determined by him/her?
2. At what point do you generally want to adjust the leading? The art board on the left is set to 21.6 and the one on the right is set to 25. It creates a bit more breathing room/white space. How do you know when you are setting it too high? Are there any basic guidelines for this?

AI and most other apps automatically set leading to 120% the type size.

At what point do I do that? Always. I never use auto-leading. Auto leading is based on the largest character in the line. So suppose for some reason you increase the size of one character or one word in a paragraph. The baseline of that whole line shifts. Amateurish.
If the document has any significant amount of body text, I "design on the leading grid." (Meaning there is a vertical grid which underlies the whole page and which corresponds to the leading of the body text. Almost all elements align to it, and are sized to increments of it. All paragraph styles are defined to conform to increments of it. Baselines of columns align across columns.) This is why InDesign, for example, has a Leading Grid feature separate from the ruler grid. It's also why InDesign's horizontal and vertical ruler grids are independent.
Auto leading should not be the default. Solid leading (same as type size) should.

InDesign leading question

Hi--
I'm trying to do a title for a greeting card, using two different fonts (a script font and a sans serif font) in two vastly differing sizes.
The leading between the lines is HUGE. I know there's a way to fix that, so that there are not vast spaces between the lines, but I can't recall how to do it. I just want to do it for this particular document, not permanently.
Also, I am trying to do some effects (drop shadowing etc.) on the words, but the palette is greyed out. Can anyone tell me why?

IE applet refresh problem

I have a menu applet whose items are generated from a database query. The problem I'm having is that the applet will not refresh when the page is reloaded or the refresh button in ie is selected. Instead of the applet I just get the gray box. The java console is not displaying any errors or exceptions. The applet works perfectly in Netscape. I'm using IE 5.5. Does anyone know if there is a problem with the Mircrosoft VM (I know, leading question) that would cause this? This is a third party applet so unfortunately I can't modify the source.

Unfortunately this is a third-party applet and so I can't modify the source code. I've tried explicitly calling the init() method from a javascript onLoad() function, but that doesn't seem to help (I've also tried calling the repaint() method).
If the applet works in Netscape, I can only assume the discrepancy is in the Microsoft VM.

Oracle licensing for partition query

Hi experts
For example if server server1 has 2 instances and let say both are using Partitioning option it will show that we have to be licensed for partitioning twice (for each instance).
If the both running on the same server and make an argument that they are on the same oracle home how would the license cost work out

theres a leading question here in that partitioning is an add-on option to an enterprise edition license. So the question isnt if you need to buy the partitioning option twice but what are you adding it on to? have you 2 EE licenses already? If you have 1 CPU, 1 EE CPU license, you need to buy 1 partitioning add-on.

Wrong results using quadrature encoders with NI DAQCard-6036E

     Hello,
I'm experiencing some troubles using two quadrature encoders with a NI multifunction I/O.
The encoders are Micro-Epsilon WDS-7500-P115-CR-TTL. They are incremental encoders in TTL logic. They are connected to a HP laptop running Windows XP Professional. The connection is via the multifunction I/O NI DAQCard-6036E. Each encoder is connected to the DAQ board with four wires: +5V, DGND, track A, track B. I used the system in my office for a while and everything was fine. Then I moved it in another place and now it shows a fuzzy behaviour.
I made the following tests:
Test 1) I connect track A&B to analog inputs on the DAQ card. Then I use SignalExpress v2.5 to perform a DAQmx analog input acquisition. The waveforms I get are exactly as expected.
Test 2) I connect track A to the counter source and I leave track B disconnected. I use SignalExpress v2.5 to set a DAQmx edge counter, with the "Count up" option enabled. Also this test is fine. When I pull the encoder cable I get +N counts and when I release the cable it goes back to zero position, giving other +N counts.
Test 3) I connect track A to the counter source and track B to P0.6 (or P0.7 for the second encoder), which is the pin used to control the count direction. I use SignalExpress v2.5 to set a DAQmx edge counter, with "Count up". In this way the DAQ should ignore track B and count always up. Actually it does, but the count rate in one direction is double with respect to the count rate in the other direction. This means that when I pull the encoder cable I get +N counts and when I put it back to initial position I get other +2N counts. In this way the counter indicates +3N at the end, while it should be +2N.
Test 4) I connect track A to the counter source and track B to P0.6 (or P0.7 for the second encoder). I use SignalExpress v2.5 to set an "Externally controlled" DAQmx edge counter. Now I get +N counts when I pull the encoder and -2N counts when I put it back to zero position. In this way the counter indicates -N at the end, while it should be zero.
Test 5) I repeat test 4 using LabWindows/CVI v8.1 and I get the same result.
Test 6) I swap lines A&B. Now track B is connected to the counter source and track A goes to P0.6 (or P0.7 for the second encoder). Using SignalExpress to perform an "External controlled" count, I get +2N counts when I pull the encoder and -N counts when I put it back to zero. So, at the end the counter indicates +N, but it should be zero.
Do you have any idea on how to solve the problem? Thank you very much in advance.

A few things:
1. I'm not from NI and won't try to speak for them. But I don't believe these forums are meant as a primary means of support, probably not an *official* means of support at all. Most of the folks here (like me) are NI's more-or-less satisfied customers, not employees.   If you buy a service contract, you can get instant phone support. If you rely on free support from the forums, I think you'll get good help most of the time, but there's just no guarantee.
2. "I just got a [email] reply from MicroEpsilon. The encoders work fine."   Um. Based on what, exactly? Of *course* they will expect their own stuff to be just fine, and in fact I very much suspect they're right. But NI will expect their board to be just fine, and I expect they're right too. Or at least it was fine *before* you hooked things up. Leading us to #3.
3. Part of the app note on Quad Encoders on E-series boards warns against connecting differential encoder outputs directly to your board. I think it mentions that a 24V differential (for example) can damage the board. But even a low-voltage differential signal isn't electrically *compatible* with your counter inputs. Your first posting claimed that the encoders produced TTL. Your June 30 post referred to inverted A and B signals for rejecting common mode noise over long transmission lines. These are classic code words that scream "differential output", *not* TTL. So now we can start addressing some specific tech issues.
4. Your E-series board is not inherently capable of handling true quadrature, as the app note says. (The newer M-series multifunction boards *do* have the capability.) You can get kinda sorta close, but you'll be at risk of count errors due to direction changes or during vibrations when otherwise stationary.
5. You will also need some type of differential to TTL conversion on your (A, /A) and (B, /B) pairs.
6. You will need a common "ground" reference for all your digital signals (probably not a true earth ground). So the ground for your conversion circuit and its TTL outputs must be tied to your DAQ board digital ground. Also the return terminal from any related external power supply. Sounds like failure to do this had been an issue with a past implementation of yours so perhaps it's an additional factor at play this time too?
7. What are you trying to measure? For what purpose? What decision is made from the data? How much do you care about its accuracy? These are leading questions, but I'm suggesting that meeting schedule with an unreliable app that produces untrustworthy data just might not be the best goal to strive for right now. If you care to maintain accurate position count despite direction changes or vibrations, you *need* something more than your E-series board. If you want reliable edge counting operation with *any* DAQ board, you *need* electrically compatible signals.

Show Sub-Folders in Finder

Is there a way to have Finder show sub-folders as well as folders when I perform a Save As in Pages?

MUCH apologies!
This problem is NOT in Pages but in iPhoto.
When File, Export is chosen, only certain folders are shown (recent) and there's no way to navigate to any other locations.

Windows 10 Color management

Hello,
I'm wondering if windows 10 will include a true color management ?
I use a wide gamut screen with and a monitor profiler in order to display right colors.
Currently, despite color management tab where you can choose the monitor's ICC profile, windows 7 and 8 do not take it into account and only few programs really do. It results in wrong colors display in the whole windows environnement especially for wide
gamut monitors.
Has this point been improved in windows 10 ?

How would you suggest it should work in the general case?
The operating system is not currently informed of the color space of the original image data. That's why the applications themselves must do it.
Now, that being said, it's deplorable that so few graphics applications actually DO do proper color-management, especially considering that there are free libraries that can even be built free of charge into commercial software (e.g., LittleCMS).
One thing Microsoft could do better in a heartbeat is have Internet Explorer embrace full color-management. At the moment it only does half the job... Specifically, it reads and processes color profiles in images and
transforms the colors to the sRGB color space but does NOT take into account the monitor profile
(and sadly, I just checked to see that this is still true with the experimental IE rendering engine). Nor does it color-manage web page elements (e.g., things colored by HTML). So far only FireFox does it properly, but even then you must
invoke an alternate color-management setting that's not the default.

There are some who, in frustration and with monitors that are capable, actually deconfigure the wide gamut capabilities of their monitors and just run them as (accurate) sRGB monitors, so that more color will look more accurate in more
different applications. That such settings are available in monitors is testament to how incomplete color-management is and how it's not getting any better.
In answer to my leading question, the "state of the art" (which hasn't changed in a very long time) COULD be made better by Microsoft providing the means for software to express the color space of its imagery to, say, the GPU so that basic color
management could be provided by the system at almost no cost to the application. But this doesn't suit their "touch first" concept (have you noticed that tablets eschew color-management entirely?).
I'm glad to see another person here asking for better from Microsoft. Keep it up!

Bridge does not make a backup copy

Evening
I was about to do a backup of my images and while I was looking at them, that although I had selected Bridge to make a backup copy and specified a directory it do not do that.
I have run many trials trying to get it to write a backup but it does't
When I start the download from my CF card I set the paramaters and options which in this case is simply rename to shot date and make a backup copy.
The progress window says it is copying the image it then switches to say it is making a backup copy. But yet that backup copy never appears.
I managed to get a bunch of screen snapshots and it appears Bridge is making a copy but it is simply writing it to the primary directory, same as the first copy so it is merely overwriting itself. I know this because when it says making Backup Copy it shows the destination directory which is the same as the first copy. I check the directory I specified for the backup and it says D:\images\raw but still puts them in C:\-----
Any ideas why Bridge is not placing a backup copy where I want it?

That's a rather insulting question, don't you think? Instead of asking leading questions, why don't you just simply say "well, if it's a laptop, the problem might this whereas, if it's a desktop, the problem might be that"?
At any rate, my take on the situation is that it doesn't matter whether it's a laptop or a desktop. If you disagree, I'd love to hear why it might matter, and I'll be happy to stand corrected.

You need to explain which row to eliminate and why, in order to go from

If the number of clients that used your service is small, you could contact them directlyn. Be sure to use a non-leading question ("Did you receive all of your goods?"). If you ask, "Did you lose an iPod? We found one, and don't know who it belongs to", most peopel would reply, "Ahhh, sure, that's mine." If that doesn't work, contact Apple. Too, I'm sure your company has had stuff unclaimed before - how did they handle that stuff?
