Learning Actinscript for kind of a newbie

I've been using Flash for several years, but the only stuff
I've done with Actionscript was basic. I want to start doing some
more advanced things, so I'm wondering if anyone could recommend
some books or other resources.
Thanks

This is always a good question, because the answers change
over the
years. Now, in particular, we've got a situation where Flash
CS3 supports
the "old regime" (AS1/AS2) and also the "new kid on the
block" (AS3).
Granted, AS3 is already a year old, but it's new to Flash,
even if Flex
supported it much earlier.
There are plenty of good AS2-related books on the market
(lately, I've
been recommending Peter Elst's and Todd Yard's
"Object-Oriented ActionScript
for Flash 8," and I'm always happy to recommend Colin Moock's
"Essential
ActionScript 2.0"; if you're into programmatic animation, you
may want to
check out Keith Peters' "Foundation ActionScript Animation:
Making Things
Move!"). Flash CS3 lets you configure your publish settings
for
ActionScript 2.0, and you can code along happily using
"yesterday's latest."
I'm noticing that many people seem to be having a hard time
with AS3.
To be honest, that doesn't particularly come as a surprise to
me, but I
personally think the payoff (greater efficiency, if nothing
else) is worth
the higher learning curve. Partly, I suspect the learning
curve *seems*
higher than it actually is because so many developers
continued on with
AS1-style programming even during the AS2 heyday. Sure, the
leap from Flash
4- and Flash 5-era code to Flash CS3-era is staggering ...
but it's not
*so* outrageous from an AS2 standpoint, especially if a
person is already
versed in writing custom classes.
There are a handful of AS3 Flash books entering the market,
but they're
still very new. Again, AS3 itself is a year old, but
AS3-in-Flash is hot
off the press. Consider Joey Lott (I can think of two recent
books of his,
off the top of my head -- co-authorship, in this case) and
Colin Moock's
"Essential ActionScript 3.0," which should be rolling off the
shelves
shortly. Keith Peters also has an AS3 update to his
programmatic animation
book.

  • Learning path for Dreamweaver newbie?

    Hi all,
I'm looking for a bit of advice one how to get started on a learning path for Dreamweaver CS5.5.
I want to be able to develop e-commerce sites and plan to use Business Cataylst to do the backend stuff.
I developed a few thing in Flash (CS3) a few years back and have a background in IT (although my programming experience is dated!) so I'm not a complete novice but know nothing of HTML/CSS.
I wonder if anyone could give me a steer on what I should concentrate on learning and if there are any particular books/resources I should consider?
    Thanks in advance and regards.

    Hello
I think you answered your own question.  I came to DW as a coding novice and a DW novice and think that I got caught up with learning DW.  That set me back almost a year, I reckon.  The more you know about HTML and CSS and other web technologies, the better partner DW will be.  If you are familiar with Photoshop as a digital editor then it would be like saying the more you know about photography, image processing and camera technique, the easier it will be to learn.  Or maybe, with Illustrator, the more you know about printing and color, the easier that will be.  Dreamweaver however, in my experience is the least intuitive software unless, you have a good grasp of HTML and CSS.
If you learn well with books, then David Powers' has written a good DW manual but there are plenty others.  If you are OK with online learning then you're in luck, there are masses of resources out there.  You could try http://www.w3schools.com/  The thing I like most about that resource is the try-it-yourself onine editor that lets you test the each that the lesson contains.
Once you get started on something and can focus in a bit more, you will be able to narrow down your searches but even then, I'm sure you will find plenty.  After that, use this forum.

  • How to learn webdynpro for java/ABAP

    hI Experts,
i am new to webdynpro technology.
and i am having the knowlgedge on Portal contenet development&administration, and having the strong knowledge on Visual composer7.0,7.1 and also trined in ABAP(currently i am not useing it).
now i wants to learn webdynpro for java/abap.
is it right choice i am taking ? i.e moving to Webdynrpo for java/abap.
what are the minimun skills i need to be a good webdynpro developer for java/ABAP. ?
is it requires straong java knowledge since i am not familiar with that too much ?
    please give your valuable inputs
    Thanks&Regards,
    Govindu

SAP uses Webdynpro to build portal content, which later will be configuted as an Iview in the enterprise portal. Webdynpro comes with Java and ABAP flavors. Both have in general the same functionality, the decision for one of the two flavors shall be based on organizational and business circumstances, but not on functionality.
If you are good in ABAP go with ABAP Webdynpro, if you are good in JAVA, go with JAVA Webdynpro. But you will get good opportunities in JAVA Webdynpro compare to ABAP Webdynpro.
    Thanks,
    Chenna.

  • How to search for "Kind not equal to Folder"

I'm trying to set up a Smart Folder with criteria:
    - Last Modifed within last 2 weeks AND

How do you set up Finder search criteria for Kind "doesn't equal" something? All I can find is Kind = All or one thing in particular?

You'll have to use the Raw Query in order to have boolean operators, such as "is not" or "or" and so on. So do your Command-F, choose Last Modified, then for second criterion select "Other" from the drop down menu and scroll to Raw Query and select it. In the Raw Query field copy and paste this:
    kMDItemKind != "Folder"
That should do it. The booleans are:
    == equal
    != not equal
    < less than
    <div class="jive-quote"> greater than
<= less than or equal to
<div class="jive-quote">= greater than or equal to
For more information than you will probably ever want to know, you can start here:

  • Learning Curve for Rules - coming from HFM 9.3.3 to 11.1.2 Cal Mgr

We are currently are on 9.3.3 for HFM, Planning, and Essbase and contemplating an upgrade to 11.1.2.2. In the documents for 11.1.2.2, I read that we will have to migrate to calc manager for the rules. We are currently on the classic versions for each application rather than EPMA.
Whats the learning curve for moving to calc manager? Are people taking a class on it or picking up on their own?

    Hi all,
I just completed an installation of 11.1.2.2 and I am testing various applications in order to assess the situation and propose to my clients.
Calculation manager is not the only way to maintain your rule file. As I have seen Oracle has discuntinued the Rule Editor but you can use any notepad to edit your rules (Notepad ++ for example) and load the rule file Workspace.
I am not really impressed from calculation manager yet. Definately in one of the following versions we will have to migrate all the rule files but I do not believe that we can do that in this version. For example in my files there is a huge issue of displaying the variables....
