Learning to Script

I'd like to learn InDesign scripting.  I have very little experience.  Where can I start? Where can I progress?
Thanks!

Hi,
Im new too in the developpement of javascript extension … But I can explain to you witch documentation I readed:
– First, you have to know how to developpe scripts with JavaScript (a progamming language)
Do you have some knowledge in programming?
– then you can read the Adobe Javascript Documentation, Adobe give many examples of scripts
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/indesign/sdk.html
– use the application ExtendScript Toolkit to write your scripts
I would like to do this in the following order:
– learn a programming language like Javascript
– read the documentation and follow the examples

  • Learning Action Script

    Hello there,
I've now been learning Flash for a couple of months now and
have learnt many things. Though, one thing which I struggle a great
deal with and I'm sure if I learnt would open many new doors -
that's Action Script. Is anyone able to direct me in th right
direction of where to learn Action Script?
    A Happy New Year!
    All the best,
    Kristopher (UK).

Flashkit is not the site it once was... now it is too full of
advertising and banners that the actual content is so far down the
    page you have to scroll.
The best site at the moment for learning Actionscript is this
    site...

  • Where can I learn Numbers scripting

    Hi
I'd love to learn how to script Numbers with AppleScript, but all I managed to find was either general AppleScript tutorials or answers to very specific Numbers problems.
Is there a book or a website where I could learn to script Numbers?
    Thanks

There is nothing to my own knowledge.
I will just add that you may go to my iDisk :
    <http://public.me.com/koenigyvan>
Navigate to the folder entitled :
    For_iWork:iWork '09:for_Numbers09:
You will be able to download a lot of scripts driving Numbers.
Some are old (1st quarter 2009) but youwill be able to extract useful tips and of course, don't forget :
    (1) Numbers' Applescript dictionary
    (2) http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/AppleScript/Conceptual/Appl eScriptLangGuide/AppleScriptLanguageGuide.pdf
I work with these two resources, no less, no more.

  • Learning apple script

    Hi,
I was reading an artical on Slate on CodeAcademy.  If you didn't know it, it's Code Year:  Time for people who don't know how to learn.  Anyway, I'm trying it out (it's Java Script) and it's not tooooooo bad.  I was wondering if there were any like places where I can learn how to program in/for Apple.  It would be nice to learn how to use the more advanced features of my iMac and other Apple products.
    Thanks,

I'm only just now learning C++ and the C++ library. I've not been much of a programmer in the past, and not sure how far necessity will now take me into the developer world, but apart from learning the Script editor, or to type 'help' into the terminal for a general introduction to programming, or to typing into the Safari 'Develop' menu to try out .html or javascript,
for really understanding how computers work and how programming works (as well as understanding the language of the best designs), I have found it an invaluable learning experience to build a little two-bit computer on a breadboard.
But be advised, I'm great with principles and poor with details, and to be a great programmer you have to be great at both. But to be a very good programmer you at least have to be very good with details.

What we call here "InDesign JavaScript" (DOM+language) is syntactically based on Adobe ExtendScript, which derives from E4X (ECMAScript for XML) and ECMAScript itself. (JavaScript is known as an implementation of the ECMAScript standard.)
In short terms, "InDesign JS" as a language should somewhat implement the ECMAScript and E4X specifications, i.e. ECMA-262 and ECMA-357:
    1) http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-262.htm
    2) http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-357.htm
It is true that the JavaScript's syntax and conventions contain familiar echoes from C or even Java, but these languages are definitely different on the semantic level and I really don't believe it's a good idea to learn C before learning JS.
Here are a few links I would add to this discussion:
    The basics:

  • Learning to script Adobe products - Javascript or ExtendScript?

    Hi there,
I know that ExtendScript is a dialect of Javascript, so if I want to learn scripting, should I first study Javascript or just plough straight into ExtendScript?
    Regards,
    David

I just plowed into extend script and got a reference book of javascript. Trying to learn javascript first might be confusing in that most if not all the references for it are for web application.

  • How do I start learning InDesign Scripting?

    Hello Everyone!
I just cut down my workflow from 40 hours per document to less than 20 using scripts! So exciting!
Can anyone suggest a good recent book or online resource to start learning scripting for Indesign?
I'm loving what we can do with scripts, but I want to start understanding what exactly I'm doing, not just how to do it.
    Thanks a bunch!
    Amy

    Hi, Amy!
A good start would be the following books:
    Grant Gamble
InDesign CS5 Automation – Using XML & JavaScript
    Peter Kahrel
    Scripting InDesign CS3/4 with JavaScript
Scripting InDesign CS3/4 with JavaScript - O'Reilly Media
And the DOM (Document Object Model) documentation here (especially the chm files):
    Indesign JavaScript Help
    For German readers also:
    Gregor Fellenz
    InDesign automatisieren

  • Best resources for learning InDesign scripting

    Hello,
I am teaching myself scripting in InDesign and having problems with the help systems.
I read the scripting docs from Adobe, examine free scripts and use the help in the ExtendScript Toolkit but I lack an education in javascript to really do well.
What books or online resources do you think could help me go from tinkerer to amateur scripter ?
    Thanks in advance,
    emmanuel.

In my experience as a learner, there is no substitute for trial and error. Olav Kvern's very helpful comments in his numerous examples (with very helpful explanatory comments) are a great start, because they enable anyone to start experimenting on their own. And I return to his examples practically every day. They answer such simple questions as "How do I open a new document?", as well as giving very clear, well-commented examples of stuff that I would otherwise find completely impossible -- such as "How do I rotate a text frame around the top-left corner?"
I'm no longer a complete beginner, but I am very much a learner still, and I think trail and error is THE way to learn anything, especially scripting. When I started off, it was about 99% error. Now I've got it down to about 75% error. But I nearly always end up with a script that works, after a struggle that is every bit as enjoyable as it is maddening, and it's a huge sense of achievement when I get there. Some gullible folks have even paid me money for this -- I have one in the pipeline for tomorrow!
Rather than reading too much stuff written by experts, I would urge you to experiment as much as possible, just by playing around to see what works and what doesn't work. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work first time. I'll bet even scripting experts (most of whom are on this list) fail on almost every first attempt. After you get one modest script to work, and then another, you'll build up a sort of "library of past scripting achievements" in your head (and in your scripts panel). Nowadays, every time I start a script, I think of how I successfully managed to do something like it before -- and I build from there.
Good luck with it -- Jeremy

  • Good Resources for learning Bash Scripting

I know, I should probably be lectured for the fact that I'm a heavy Linux user who programs in a variety of languages, but is very limited when it comes to bash scripting itself.
So, I've decided now is the time to learn. It seriously beats writing configuration scripts in C, I think (that's not really what C is used for these days...).
So, anyone know of some good (preferably free) resources on learning Bash?
    Edit:
OR if someone has any suggested alternatives (e.g., Python as a replacement?), do tell.

  • Help, advice needed for learning Action Script

I don't have any experience with programing and even scripting and I can't find tutorials for total beginners. I started to read this one
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ActionScript/3.0_ProgrammingAS3/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d118a9 b8cbfe-7ff7.html
but I have difficulties understanding the explanations.
If you have any advice and pointers to tutorials for total dummy beginners I will greatly  appreciate it.

I’m 27 years old and one month ago I started study ActionScript 3.0. After red a lot of forums with recommendations about what need to do for study as3 I clear next things:
Try to visit forums about as3 and discus with people about your problems and also try to help other solve their problems (you can help a lot of people to solve their problems, you can find a lot answers to your questions, you can share your experience with others)
Try to read books about as3 (in books you can find all theory and some examples for this theory, so this info will be very helpful for you, because it’s a fundamental knowledge what you must to know)
Try to visit sites with tutorials (on the net you can find a lot sites with tutorials and there you step by step will study a lot of things)
Share your knowledge with others (create your blog or something else where you will show to people your examples of work, where you will write about as3 and will share your experiences and knowledge, this can give you chance to consolidate your knowledge and give opportunity other people study as3)
Try to separate big not understandable problem to smaller(after you find answer to all small problems you can find answer to big problem)
And the main what you must remember then YOU MUST CODING EVERY DAY! (I think without it you never been a as3 coder.)

  • Learning about scripting, XHMTL, etc.

Hi. I've used bother GoLive and Dreamweaver to produce a
couple of websites, but I'd like to understand more about the
foundations of how a website works. Specifically, I'd like to know
more about XHTML, PHP, ASP, scripting etc. I'd like to know
specifically what all of these are, and when I might need to use
    what to create different functions.
I'm not looking to become a full-blown web developer. My
interest in this is primarily in being able to identify when I need
what outside help, and in being able to communicate with 'real' web
developers. I'd also be interested to know a bit of HTML, so I can
go in the back end of Dreamweaver and GoLive to identify what the
issue is, when problems arise. And hopefully to be able to fix them
    myself.
My question is really in two parts - What do I need to know?
And where is the best place to find user friendly,
step-by-step guidance on whatever it is I need to know?
Perhaps someone could recommend a good book on the subject?
Possibly one that has supplementary publication, should I decide
that I DO want to go into this further ...
    Thanks in advance
    Mira

    Hi Mira,
I realize you've already gotten an excellent answer, but I'd
like to mention one other book that I think may be of great help to
    you:
Webmaster in a Nutshell by O'Reilly Media (ISBN:
0596003579). I understand that you have no desire to become a web
developer, but don't let the title discourage you—what it is
is an overview of various technologies, with each one presented as
    a brief guided tour.
It will help you understand the purpose of each technology,
and give you the ability to identify them when you encounter them.
I cut my teeth on O'Reilly books, and they have plenty of other
in-depth books should you find yourself need of more than a bird's
    eye view.
Other publishers that offer a good selection of accurate,
useful books are: friends of ED, Peachpit Press (Visual Quickstart
Guides), and PoguePress/O'Reilly (Missing Manual series).
    Regards,
    Bev
