Left fan got louder after around 2 months

hey. I just discovered that after around 2 months of use my left fan got louder. Is this normal ? I mean it can be normal if you use a laptop for around 2 years, but it is kind of weird that this happens just after 2 months. seriously my fan was very very quite when i got my macbook pro, but now it seems to become more and more anoying plus the freaking whine...
Regards,
Martin

Hey Martin,
To stop the whine use a program called 'Quietmacbook' Google it and you will find it, this stops the whine by loading the 2 processors but don't use it on battery life otherwise it will reduce your battery time, as for the fan, i have week build 28 on my macbook pro and the left fan is always on after the firmware update to stop the so called mooing issues, its probably the amoutn of dust in there which makes the fan spin faster to push out the hot air

  • Mac Mini fan running loudly after Safari upgrade

Mac Mini 2GHz is around 2 months old. All been fine until yesterday. When running Safari (it seems) and not necessarily heavy usage fan starts runningvery loudly. In the previous 2 months NEVER heard the fan or at least it's been very quiet, so am quite concerned. It appears that this has coincided with updating to the very latest Safari release 3.1.1.
Anyone else having similar problem and/or advice?
    thanks
    D

The new Safari release supposedly has some issues with Flash media files and with Windows Media files -- and will require updates of the helper programs that display those formats.
Does the fan run loudly when you visit sites with such files? Or does it also run loudly if all you visit is sites with no video files on them?

  • Fan really loud after coming in from the cold

I came home from school today and left my backpack in my car which had my MBA in it to talk to my neighbour for a bit. It's approximately -22 Celsius where I live right now. When I came inside, I woke up it up, as it was previously sleeping, and it's fan (or at least that's what I think it is) was really loud. Ever since I got it, I haven't heard the fan once, and I was horrified when I heard it, so I quickly turned it off. I later found out that I have to let it warm up to room temperature before turning it on. It's been about 2 hours now and I just tried to turn it on again, and I'm still hearing the fan. What should I do? I'm worried because I don't want to harm my MBA, but I also need to use it to work.

Ooh, you should never do that, you need to let your macbook warm up to room temp. before turning it on.
you risk condensation forming inside a rapid warming macbook as the fan shuttles WARM air in the room over the COLD logic board
its not the fan you should worry about, its doing that and causing condensation and corrosion to form from quick temp. fluctuations inside the cold macbook.
DONT do that again, it leads to corrosion.
    FAN NOISE:
A: you notice it more in a quiet room (the typical case) which is normal, all is AOK
B: fuzz and dust has caked onto the blades causing the fan hub to get off balance and make a buzzing sound.
C: fan rotor is going bad and making a whirring or buzz noise (rare).
D: Fan is spinning up due to excess heat from gaming, heavy graphics (typical, all is OK)
    A and D are normal
    B and C are not.

  • IMac's optical drive fan is loud after replacing the optical drive with an SSD?

Today I removed the optical drive from my late 2009 iMac and installed an SSD in its place. Everything works perfectly, except for one thing...my optical drive fan goes crazy when I turn the iMac on. It goes to full blast and it sounds like my computer will blast off into space at any time. I'm aware that this is a common issue when replacing/upgrading hard drives, and so I did some research and found an app called SSD Fan Control that fixed the problem for the most part.
In a nutshell, the fan runs at normal speed and is quiet when I'm logged in and actually using the computer, thanks to SSD Fan Control. However, when I turn the iMac on and it's at the white boot-up screen with the Apple logo, the fan goes up to full blast. Once the computer logs in, the fan quiets down because SSD Fan Control is set to launch at login.
I was wondering if there's a way to make it so that the fan is quiet at the boot screen too...it's quite annoying turning my iMac on and hearing that obnoxiously loud whirring sound as it's booting up. Is it possible, or can it just be controlled while I'm actually logged in?

An iPad is a great device, but it's no computer replacement. It lacks the file sharing/structure that comptuers have and the ability to easily get files onto/off it without the internet.
That said, if you still have your desktop and use it for most of the computing work and basically just want a photo viewer, check your e-mail device, then it may work for you.
The networked harddrive will be the hard part. Since the iPad lacks a file manager anything you use on it must have an app so that you can access it. And that app also must be allowed to 'send' your files to another app. So that may be what you really need to research. The ability and ease of using a network drive to do the file sharing you want.

  • What the...? Fan starts working after 14 months of zilch!

I bought a 24" iMac in August 2009 and noticed that it ran unusually hot. I checked a few forums and was told that this is normal, and the aluminium body acts as a heat sink.
I installed iStat Nano and it showed no fan sensors and temp only for the HD. So I used external fans (3) to cool it down all summer.
Two days ago, I accidentally disconnected the iMac from the power point and quickly plugged it back in -- and fans started blowing!
They're unbelievably noisy and I can't find any way to switch them off or turn them down. @#$%^&* cold, too! (Forget using Skype or microphones... way too noisy.)
No fan sensors showing still on iStat Nano, and temp still only shows HD.
    Any suggestions?

Yes do a SMC reset and a PRAM reset, here are the instructions:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL other peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • Hot & Loud - Left Fan staying at over 6000RPM

For about a week or more now I've notice my MBP being extra loud and extra hot. I did have an issue with an errant app (APC PowerChute) that was maxing out one core. I uninstalled it and it did improve, both fans no longer stayed on and the temp no longer hit past 200f.
However that didn't seem to resolve it completely, the temp will jump up to 175f-190f after only a few minutes of being turned on and nothing but Mail open. That is after it has been shutdown completely all night.
iStat Pro tells me my Right Fan is running at just over 2K RPMs, while the Left Fan is over 6.1K which is very loud. The fans occasionally make odd sounds that make me think at least one of them is dying.
I have reset the SMC which had no effect. Running "top -o cpu" shows only around 20% total CPU usage.
While I cannot confirm the timing of these issues, they did seem to coincide with when I updated to 10.6.3 on release.
I don't know if its related, but I have also noticed that if I leave it on when I go to bed, when wake it the next day it has either restarted, or attempted to (with a dialog on the screen that X application prevented a shutdown). This seems like it would make sense that if the machine got to hot, it would try to shutdown.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

If yours is one of the current 2.53ghz unibody MBPs with non-user removable battery then it only actually has one fan, dwight. (iStat Pro still reports a "right fan" spinning at close to zero revs, but it is a figment of the program's imagination!) The single "left" fan is actually located in the centre of the rear of the computer (no chance that something is blocking the vents there?) .
(If, instead, you have one of the earliest unibody 2.53 MBPs with a *user removable battery* then you can ignore the stuff that follows, as those models do indeed, have two fans, and the fact that one was running and the other was not would certainly be a hardware issue)
The fact that the fan is running at full speed AND the temps are high strongly suggests to me that this is probably an issue related to excessive processor use rather than anything else, but your reported CPU usage is quite low. Could you check this using Activity Monitor following the steps outlined at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473 just to be sure that you don't have a "CPU hog" of some kind.
If it was a 'temperature related" shutdown occurring at night no process would be able to prevent it. Such shutdowns involve processes built into the processor itself and aren't over-ridden by the normal software shutdown routines.
    Cheers

  • My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).  The key behaves the same for the laptop keyboard and for an external Apple keyboard?  This just started in last week after 6 months of use

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

  • I just got my computer working again after 6 months of being without it, and now iTunes is saying it is not authorizable? How do I fix this?

I just got my computer working again after six months of it being down. I have had it for almost five years and it has been synced with my iPhone as well. I'm trying to re-sync it now but it won't transfer purchases I've made from iTunes on my iPhone and wants me to authorize my computer. I try, and then it tells me my account is already on 5 computers (it is NOT) and that this computer cannot be authorized. HOW do I fix this???

Log in to iTunes,  go to "view your account info" on the itunes store,  deauthorise all five, (Please Note: this can only be done Once every 12 months)  and then re-authorize your current Computers one at a time.

Try an SMC Reset. (System Management Controller)
Shutdown>unplug from power for ten minutes>press and hold in the power button for ten seconds>startup again.
Also try a PRAM Reset. (Parameter RAM)
Shutdown. At the bootup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go of all keys to finish booting,
If this doesn't do it, run the Hardware Test in Extended

  • I have a mid 2009 13'' MBP. I got the battery replaced in Apple store, It then stopped displaying the battery status LED. After some months of use my MBP died. I got it checked in Apple verfied Service centre and was told that logic board was to blame

I have a mid 2009 13'' MBP. I got the battery replaced in Apple store, It then stopped displaying the battery status LED.
After some months of use my MBP died outside USA. I got it checked in Apple verfied Service centre and was told that logic board was faulty.
After I came back to US I took my MBP to Apple store and was told that there is liquid damage in the system. My question is that if there was liquid damage why did my MBP stop displaying the battery status right after  the battery was changed secondly why didnt the apple verified Service centre tell me that there was liquid damage afterall I paid them the money for diagnosing the problem.
Is there a process i can followup on this problem

These are question you would need to ask that service center.

The Kindle app is so you do not have to use a Kindle. Yes, he can have a Kindle account and not own an actual Kindle hardware device.

  • Noisy left fan on brand new MacBook Pro 15" (started after 4 days)

The left fan (just under the speaker) is making noise, sounds as if it's catching on the casing or something.
Problem is, the Macbook is non-standard (hig-res matte display) and I need it painfully much for the next two monts - it was bought specifically for the purpose of major jobs.
Is it possible to have it fixed in a day or two or does it require ages and ages?
    Thanks!

My MBP (Mid 2009) just started doing this on the left side, and I've had it apart several times trying to clean and re-lubricate that fan. The sound is not as bad now, but the increased fan noise is still present and I'll be shelling out $50 for a new one probably tomorrow. I'm putting up a YouTube video so you can hear the awful noise it was making last night (harbinger75 movies there).
Mine's not under warranty anymore, and I've been a Mac/PC tech for years, so it takes all of fifteen minutes to change one out.
Hopefully, they'll just replace the fan for you.
