Legally Unlocked Phone from France

1. Will the iPhone purchased in France, which is legally unlocked, work in the US and other countries with a local pre paid sim. I plan to use it in Italy, India, Philippines, Russia, Eastern Europe, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, USA and other countries. I am looking for ACTUAL experiences from users, thank you.
2. Will Orange, the Apple iPhone seller in France, sell the phone for cash in France, or do they require credit card?
I have heard that if you buy the phone using a credit card, it must be a French credit card, so therefore i must use cash in the local store in France.
I would of course buy a USA iPhone, but i am only here one month a year, and travel the world for work the rest of the time - which is why, if I use an iPhone, i want the legal unlocked French version to avoid the approx $2/min roaming charges.
Many of my business associates would also like to know the answers to these questions.
I have seen many Topics on this forum with speculation, arguments, debates, etc regarding this topic, but i would like please either an official Apple answer, or actual user experience - thanks.
Note - I have contacted customer service, customer sales, online Apple.com chat and my local store with no answer. If I go to France before the new phone comes out, which may happen, the older phone they have in stock there is 700 Euro which is more than one thousand dollars, so I would like to know beforehand if it will be functional.
Thanks.

In regards to 1 and 2, I do not know.
In regards to 3, I personally believe so. However, I have not specifically been trained on the iPhone outside of the U.S.
The best bet for questions 1-3 is to contact AppleCare Europe or Orange.
In regards to 4, yes, that is what the silver Apple logo next to my name means. My posts are under the Terms of Use, including this section specifically:

  • Legally unlocked phone from Italy - PayAsYouGo in US?

I am going to buy an unlocked iPhone either in Italy or the Czech Republic (where I was told it will be available tomorrow night unlocked). So when I come to the US for 4 months, how do I get local service on it? Sure, I can pop in my T-Mobile SIM, but that won't give me unlimited data, so how do I get AT&T unlimited data with Pay-as-You-Go which I was told is available (maybe) for $19.99/mo?
If I were to move back to the US, can I get a 2 year contract with an existing phone? This is a lesser concern of course... I need to be able to get a temporary pre-paid deal for when I am in the US.

  • Legally unlocked phone using in US with data on PAYG

I have an unlocked UK iPhone, which O2 legally unlocked for me. I am now moving back to the US and don't want to get into a two-year contract with AT&T until I can see that their coverage is worthy.
Does anyone know a US carrier who will provide both voice, text and DATA support to an iPhone on pay as you go?
During Christmas, I was in the US and got a PAYG sim from AT&T, but despite paying $20 for a data package, AT&T no longer supports data on PAYG plans. Therefore, my lovely iPhone was rendered virtually useless, except for voice and text.

#1 Call AT&T, however they will probably be unwilling to unlock your phone. It is up to AT&T discretion if they will unlock your phone or not (most AT&T reps don't have a clue it is possible). The Apple rep told me it is possible because some Apple technicians get their phones unlocked by AT&T when they go overseas for longer periods of time.
This is most likely a special agreement that Apple has with ATT.
#2 Get your Iphone unlocked in the country you are going to. Assuming the country you are going to has a legal iphone provider, that provider has the authority to unlock your phone permantly to be used on their network. The rep I spoke to told me this option would probably be my best bet in getting my iphone unlocked as AT&T is very reluctant at unlocking the iPhone. The downside is that I (you) won't know if it will work until you are in that country.
No, they do not. Only the original provider can unlock the phone. You can't go to the UK and ask O2 to unlock a US phone for you. The rep gave you misinformation or said what you want to hear.
#3 Buy an new unlocked phone from Apple. Apparently Apple is able to sell unlock IPhones in special circumstances in the USA, unlocked. Since he gave me this option, I assume moving to another country is warranted as a special circumstance. However, I would need to pay the full unsubsidized price for the phone and I can only buy the phone at a retail location, not online and not through AT&T.
Apple does not sell "special" unlocked phones in the US. This would violate the exclusive deal they have with ATT.

I bought the company unlocked phone from apple store Canada. It was originally loaded with software 4.2 and was working fine here in SaudiArabia.  Yesterday I updated with IOS 5.0.1.  Now it is showing that sim is not valid.  The same sim works fine in other phones.

Here's and update on my problems and here are are some screen shots of the types of problems I've been having since the v5.0.1 update. Keep in mind these are native apps and I have tried the rebuild phone crap many times, nothing helps.
This is screen shot of a what happened when I tried to use my camera one day, both the front and back cameras were all black. I had to power cycle the phone to get rid of this problem. The cameras appeared to be working correctly, I could focus and zoom but it was all black.
Here is an image of what happened when I searched for something in a map. This is after I picked the choice I wanted, the keyboard disappeared but the list didn't. I had to force close the app and restart it for this problem to go away. Who knew five bars on ATT was possible.
And finally this is the messaging app, although you would not know it. I had to return to home screen (after a long pause for it to process the button push) and return to the messaging app. This happens all the time with the messaging app and the notifications sounds drive me crazy. If  i'm using the phone, say browsing the web and I get an incoming message its almost 100% of the time the messaging app will screw up. The sound will play at the wrong time or not at all, message will show up in notifications and diasapear in message app or Ill have a problem like this:

  • Hi, I recently got myself an apple iphone 5s (factory unlocked) phone from the US. However on using the same in India with Vodafone, i am facing a problem where the connectivity keeps switching to EDGE most of the time. Any solutions??

    Hi,
I recently got myself an apple iphone 5s (factory unlocked) phone from the US. However on using the same in India with Vodafone, i am facing a problem where the connectivity keeps switching to EDGE most of the time. I have a 3G plan but most of the time it switches automatically to EDGE. Thats when i have to either switch Airplane mode - On/Off and then it acts normal. Any permanant solutions to fix this problem?

Return the iPhone personally or via friend/relative/co-worker who is in
the US. The warranty is valid only in the country of original purchase - the USA
in this case. Apple will not accept international shipments for evaluation nor
will Apple ship out of the country after repair/replacement.
How did the iPhone from the US get to you in India? Reverse that process to
get it back to the US so someone can take it into Apple.

  • Hi I bought a factory unlocked phone from Dubai but I'm using it in india. But it still doesn't have FaceTime option in settings . is there a way to get FaceTime on my phone without jail breaking .. Pla help guys

Bought my iPhone 4 from Dubai even though it's a factory unlocked phone I don't have a FaceTime button in setting so I'm wondering is there anyway I can get the FaceTime with out jail breaking my device it's working on iOS 4.3.5 , I read so much about getting it after u jailbreak Ur phone u get FaceTime but can I get it with out jail breaking my device as I'm using it in india please reply guys

iPhones purchased in the UAE do not have FaceTime installed and FaceTime will not appear regardless of where the phone is taken.
Jailbreaking will void your warranty with Apple, may permanently render your phone unusuable, and will eliminate the possibility of getting help from Apple or its forums including this one.
If you want FaceTime on an iPhone, sell that phone and purchase one from one of the authorized iPhone dealers in India.

  • I want to buy a factory unlocked phone from US! Will it work well in India without a voltage concertor

Will factory unlocked phone bought from US work in India without any voltage converters?

Yes but you will not get 4G/LTE in India and the warranty is no good in India.

  • Unlock a phone from France

Hi,I recently bought an ee-locked second hand phone but I'm in France. Is there a way to unlock the phone without being obliged to subscribe ?
    Thanks.

The only way to unlock an EE device while abroad is to get an EE PAYG SIM for it off somewhere like eBay, register an online account for it in your own name with EE and top it up with at least £9 to cover the unlocking fee and apply to EE to unlock it by filling in the Unlocking your device form as the PAYG option.
But before you do make sure you have some way with loading the SIM with GBP, for which you will certainly need a UK bank or credit card. It is not free to unlock a device with EE.

  • What iPhone 5 UK network/unlocked phone should I go with if I move to France next year?

    Hey guys,
I've been trying to work out what option would suit me best and I still have not got a clue.
Basically I live in the UK and want to purchase the new iPhone. The problem is that I will be moving to France for a student exchange next year. Therefore I don't know if I should buy an unlocked phone from Apple (which I will do if there's no other option but it is a lot of money and I'm not too keen on that) or get a 24 month plan from one of the networks and unlock it somewhere else. Will that be even possible, I mean to unlock it manually? And is it going to work normally in other countries? Also what network should I go for? I'm currently an o2 customer but I've heard that they don't support the 4g?
I hope it all makes kind of sense. Sorry if these questions seem stupid but being a girl doesn't help! Any information would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Weronika

Just suck it up & purchase an officially unlocked iPhone from Apple. It's gonna cost the same whether you take out a subsidized contract & request an official unlock vs just buying unlocked to begin with.

  • Skype to go with US phone in France?profile.langua...

Is Skype to Go available to make calls from an older non-smart French phone from France to either mobile or landline phones in the US?
    Thanks for any help!

    pelicanfilm wrote:
So the question is: can she Skype using the local French GSM network using her iPhone?
    Hello,
Yes that should work. Check with the local network operator. She will need to subscribe to the Unlimited USA/Canada Plan @$2.99/month OR purchase a little credit. Calls are charged at 2.3 cents/minute or part thereof.  If credit is used to finance the call there is also a 7.9 cent connection fee per call (not per minute).  If a Plan is used there is no connection fee.
TIME ZONE - US EASTERN. LOCATION - PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA.
I recommend that you always run the latest Skype version: Windows & Mac

Only the carrier your phone was locked to in France can authorize the official unlocking of your phone. So contact them as to cost/procedure.
