Leopard server, Tiger clients, 'IP address in use' error messages

I am really at my wit's end here. We have about 100 iBooks running 10.4.11 and a couple hundred MacBooks running Leopard. I took away the job of DHCP from my Windows Server 2003 servers because it couldn't seem to keep the Tiger clients straight, and now the Leopard server is doing the same thing. The laptops are shut down and booted often 10 times a day for use in different classes by different students in different segments of the building, but all the same subnet. Very often, iBooks get an "IP in use by [some other Mac's MAC address], server [IP address of Xserve]" it looks just like this: http://podfeet.com/NosillaCast/NC2006_05_21/iperror.jpg
In addition, when I go to look up the client list on the Leopard server via Server Admin, it shows several instances of the same computer name, same MAC address, different IP address, as well as same computer name, different MAC address, same IP address, and, of course, same IP address for two or three different computers. This is as bad as, if not worse, than Windows server! But it's only the Tiger clients, and I can easily see the duplications in the list, why can't the server see that and do something about it?
I am going to be moving to SL server, but not soon enough. Apparently, it's much easier to assign static IP assignments in SL server than Leopard server. I need a resolution for this now, though. I have Googled quite a bit, but nothing I've found matches my situation. And it causes chaos. After the students clear away the IP conflict box, they often cannot log in until a local admin logs in and "renews IP address" or they restart and clear the error boxes until it gets an IP address it will accept.
I can paste in some console logs if that would help, but essentially, the client refuses the IP address offered by the server, so that suggests that it arps the address itself and determines it's already in use. This whole system, which should be so intelligent, seems so clueless. Why doesn't the server realize it's giving the same IP to different computers, listing the same computers twice with the same and different IPs, etc.? Why doesn't the laptop keep trying to get an IP address? It's extremely frustrating for teachers and students alike.
I really thought this would get better using Leopard server instead of the Windows server, but it actually seems worse now. I've done tests to see if there is a different DHCP server somewhere, but none ever shows up.
Anyone with insight, I'd appreciate it. Thanks

One big 172.16.0.0/12 subnet? Ok. Not my first choice.
It's /16, but still was not my choice either. With about 50 printers and servers with static IPs that would all need the mask changed, I put off clipping the subnet mask since VLANs were in the works anyway.

The network traffic for a DHCP lease or a lease renewal is negligible.
Figure a few messages at intervals of half the lease time for each client.
There already appears to be a DHCP failure here.
I tried many different things with the 2003 Servers, usually two at a time handing out IPs (same subnet, different range, i.e. one serving 172.16.2.1-3.254/16 and the other 172.16.4.1-5.254/16), and the iBooks would often sit for minutes without getting an IP at all. I'd have to turn on the Xserve's DHCP server to hand out an additional range in the subnet (172.16.6.1-254/16), and the iBooks would then snap up IPs and authenticate to AD.

And as for the weirdness, I'd be wondering if the DHCP traffic is being filtered by some of the devices present in this network; it's very easy to have a DHCP server active on a WiFi device (which is why most larger sites have them all configured as APs) and it's also easily feasible to have a rogue WiFi around.
Thanks, all good ideas, but I don't think the problem here. I have all Airport Extreme base stations in Bridge Mode. I regularly do scans for rogue APs, and the iBooks would not associate to one anyway - they only know the school network and need admin access to change. In fact, so inflexible is Tiger that when I started changing to WPA2 from WPA, same SSID and password, the iBooks would not associate to the WPA2 networks without local admin login and manually choosing the SSID (and the password was still in the keychain and worked). I then brought some iBooks back to an area with just WPA (older firmware on older Airport could not do WPA2) and the iBooks were once again stranded. Leopard laptops moved seamlessly between the same APs.
I've also done some testing for rogue DHCP servers, but nothing was found, and I've not seen any wierd IPs coming up.

Subnetting and vlans are options. If this is a decent-sized network, I'd definitely look to subnet it; you're already in line for subnetting now, what with what is probably mixed faculty and student traffic.
The reason that VLANs are on hold was that I told admin that with our limited wireless network (1 SSID, Airport not VLAN-aware), when they were not in an office with their laptops on ethernet, they'd only get Internet through the wireless (which would be on student/teacher VLAN), no access to admin servers or printers. I was surprised at the vociferous response.

I'd probably toss a monitor onto different parts of the network - if you've not already tried this - and go hunting for "surprises". (If you're spec'ing out for bids on an upgrade, having packet-monitoring capabilities and rogue detection is really handy. That'll tell you if you have a rogue, or if DHCP traffic is pushing you over the edge.)
I have an old PC catching syslogs and it has Wireshark, but I haven't turned that on in a while. If I have time, I will see if I can capture anything. I did get bids on Cisco and Procurve wireless and network infrastructure upgrades last year, and pretty much got the 'no way, talk to the hand' response (and a few more Apple APs).

Go talk to the finance folks and to the school board, and tell them that their servers and their network traffic are all exposed to the students. If they're not running encryption, they're toast. (And they're potentially toast even if they are.) That discussion both for reasons of budget, and to cover you, as this looks to be the textbook network configuration case that eventually "blows up" on the IT staff.
We're a medium-sized independent high school with a strapped budget. I have requested and explained everything, but it hasn't sunk in. Last year, I made everything work. This year, without all the special qos settings and tweaks to the switches I made last year to keep things mostly together, things are much more wonky (I stripped out all the qos settings over the summer while preparing for the VLANs, which I assumed was a no-brainer to happen. Unfortunately, I didn't document the settings before I cleared them, and I can't quite achieve the same balance this year). And, by the way, IT staff is pretty much me.

I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro(2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need topurchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product
are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
    is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you
are trying to do.  The license for OSX shipped with any
is only valid for that product.  Also, Snow Leopard,
including Server, is only permitted to be run on one
computer at a time.  Bottom line, unlike Lion, legally
you cannot install the same copy on multiple
computers unless some "family pack" or site license
    is purchased.
Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
The copy of Snow Leopard license is here:

  • Time machine slow in leopard server unlimited client

I installed today the leopard server unlimited client,
The time machine is in "preparing".. and it keepts preparing....
the backup drive is another internal drive.
1)it seems that it has taken a lot of time to backup an operating system disk!
2)maybe I am stupid, but 20 years ago, the scientific computers had versions for file. with that you could avoid all that "time machine" stuff and delays and need to backups.. with versions and an array you get the time machine instantly!.. with out of this waste of hours-time waiting for the " newest time machine".
.. 20 years after, an a bad solution is the top of the mac marketing???
i hope tomorrow the time machine could show more than a "preparing" window...

Are you backing-up the clients, or the server, or both?
Like most folks here, I'm not very familiar with the Server product, but I understand TM can do either or both.

This is to do with the .htaccess file on your server.
You either need to deal with this and open it with an html editor or change your web host.
Do a search of this forum and there are plenty of posts that relate to parse error and .htaccess pages.  Have a look on the right hand side of this post and you will see similar ones like yours.

    Hi,
Does it become active if you go to System Preferences > Accounts and Click on the current Account Pic and attempt to take a Pic ? (you do not have to Set it as the Pic)
Go to System Preferences > Accounts
Click on Your Account (in the list on the Left)
The Right hand side will now show some options.
Clicking the current Pic will give you access to Edit Pic
One of the Options then is to take a Snapshot.
Take a Snap Shot but you do not have to "Set" the Pic.
    This process will invoke VDCAssistant.
Explain further about the PRAM Reset please.
You should shut down the computer (Rather than trying to catch the Restart)
You should then Start the Computer holding down the AppleALT+PR keys and keep holding them until you hear three Start Up0 Bongs (Chimes)
This deletes some settings such as System Preferences Settings for the Volume (Sound) and Date and Time that may need resetting afterwards. (Others may also be effected such as Screen Saver)

  • 10gAS, proxy server and client ip address

    Hello,
We recently deployed an application in a 10G application server, running behind an apache reverse proxy server.
Our developers want to get the client ip addresses, which the proxy server passes in the the header x-forwarded-for. They're currently using getRemoteAddr to get the ip address of the system making the request, which is always going to be the proxy server.
If using webcache, it looks like it's possible to toggle webcacheip on in the httpd.conf, which modifies the return value of getRemoteAddr appropriately. Is there a way to modify the application server to pull the ip address out of the x-forwarded-for header instead of the clientip header and return it via getRemoteAddr?
Should I just have the developers pulling from that x-forwarded-for header value instead?

I've gotten a few emails on this, what I did was this:
On the front end apache reverse proxy, I added these lines:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} ^(.*)
    RewriteRule ^.* - [env=MY_REMOTE_ADDR:%1]
    RequestHeader set ClientIP "%{MY_REMOTE_ADDR}e
It's been a while, but I recall having to do some extra work to be able to write this value into a header, I couldn't do it directly, so I did the above four lines instead.
And then set UseWebCacheIp On on the application server httpd.conf.

  • Snow Leopard server, Lion clients

Good day I am running a 10.6.8 server (Mac Pro 2010) with 300 user account on it. At this time because out client computers needing compatibility with multiple applications upgrades we need to upgrade all out clients to 10.7.3. The decision has been made and I need to go with it. The server only runs user accounts, shared folders, Wiki and DNS. I am hesitant to upgrade the server to 10.7. I have attempted some quick searches for any issue with running 10.6.8 Server and 10.7 clients but it has not resulted in much.
What is the biggest issue I am going to be running into?
Will AFP still work with 10.7 clients?
Should I upgrade the server to 10.7 also?
What will I loose at this point upgrading everything?
Looking forward to what I can learn.

What is the biggest issue I am going to be running into?
What issues will you run into if you upgrade your clients to Lion, but leave your server on Snow Leopard? none. That's entirely valid.
Will AFP still work with 10.7 clients?
    Yes
Should I upgrade the server to 10.7 also?
Not unless you specifically need some of the features in Mac OS X Lion Server, and absolutely not if you only have one server.
What will I loose at this point upgrading everything?
Probably several nights' sleep. Upgrading a server, and maintaining all the services without any downtime is a significant process. Snow Leopard Server doesn't stop running just because Lion is available, and it won't stop when Mountain Lion comes along, either.
If your mandate is to upgrade the clients, then do that, and take your time planning your server upgrade/migration.

  • Installing Leopard Server over Client - is it possible?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before - I searched and couldn't find an answer. Is it possible to install Leopard Server onto a machine that's currently running Leopard client?
I have a client machine and one account (admin) with lots of data files. I'd like to install Leopard server on the machine and retain the account and it's data. What's the best way to accomplish this if the installation won't just "upgrade" it to a server machine.
    Thanks.

You should be able to do an archive and install, preserving user accounts, and that should do it. You cannot have two simultaneous installs though.
There's always the chance of problems, but then again this might not be due to the way you install OS X. I had Open Directory issues with my first installation (format and clean install) because I started some services in the wrong order. Be sure to read up on this board and elsewhere the preferred sequence for starting the desired services on your server.

  • Leopard Server 10.4 Blogs/Wiki and Safari error with www alias and Log Out

I have a Leopard Server 10.5 setup with dns and web services including blogs and wikis setup. If I browse to http://hostname.domain.com/users using Safari 5.0.1, I see that the session is not logged in (i.e. Log Out is not visible. I can login and create a blog and logout with no issue. I can do this on Firefox and Camino as well.
Now, if I browse to http://www.domain.com/users however... the Log Out button is visible all the time in Safari 5.0.1 only - Firefox and Camino show the correct status of a non logged in session. In Safari 5.0.1 it is not possible to login to post or create a blog WHEN the www.domain.com url is used.
I have rebuilt Leopard server twice on a physical and a virtual machine for testing and can reproduce the exact same error. It's a mix of using www.domain.com and Safari. Any other browser works fine and ALL browsers work fine with any other alias pointing to the same site, including hostname.domain.com
Testing on Safari 5.0.1 on the server itself works fine. Testing on clients was on 10.6 and 10.5 and was performed on 4 separate client machines. Browsing on the server was fine but browsing on any client would produce the error when using www.domain.com.
If anyone can offer any suggestions, please help!

I tried several new approaches, but nothing worked so far.
The update to 10.5.5 made things worse. Connections are dropping all over the place, when saving from Adobe programs in particular.
Printing from clients to a Xerox Phaser 5500 works, but choosing a different paper size than the default chosen in the cups admin interface goes all wrong and either prints on the default paper size, but down/upscaled to the chosen paper size or prints on the chosen paper size and down/upscaled as if you were printing to the default paper size. (e.g. default paper size is A4, you choose A3 with an A3 document. Document prints on A4 and is downscaled to A4, or prints on A3 and is downscaled to A4.)
There is no way I can keep this thing in production much longer. I tried reinstalling again, but that did not change any behaviour. Another nice "feature": InDesign disables "edit original" when the path to the linked file contains any directoryname with more than 8 characters in length.
Coupled with a sometimes disappearing "dirserv" (it just stops working until I reboot the whole computer) the decision stands to move away from the Xserve.
Leopard Server 10.5.x just does not seem to work well with windows clients.
We will migrate to a windows server 2003 running ExtremZ-IP for the macintosh clients this weekend. Too bad that Apple does not allow Bootcamp to work on Xserves, at least the hardware would have been useful then.
(As a nice finishing touch, the harddisk partition where all data resides did become corrupt over the weekend. "The volume Daten could not be repaired."
Disk Utility and first aid did show nothing on friday ... saturday after no work being done on the partition this error shows up. The only solution I could find was to reformat the partition and restore from a previous backup. Another weekend down the drain. Sorry for the rant, but 6 weekends in a row is enough.)

  • Windows Server 2012 Used: Error Message from Windows 7 PC: Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator.

We are using Windows Server 2012 Standard installed in VMWare / Virtual machine and to access this we use vSphere client and Remote Desktop Connection / service was already enabled and was working fine with User PCs / laptops remote desktop into the server
2012, until it gave an error message of: Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license.  Please contact the server administrator. whilst logging into the server.
We DON'T use Active Directory nor and we don't use domain and not looking to use it any-time soon.
I checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and it says the grace period has expired and the licensing mode for the remote desktop session host server is not configured.  I have checked the Remote Desktop Gateway has been stopped and I tried to start it and it
resumed to stop, here I assume its where the licensing part comes in to re-enabled this.
I have been trying to follow these articles online: http://ryanmangansitblog.com/2013/03/27/deploying-remote-desktop-gateway-rds-2012/ and http://www.concurrency.com/blog/rds8-add-a-licensing-server-2/#Install  the overview part that I cannot get into,
because I think we have to be is AD DS for this which we don't.  Is there a way around this for non domain / just standalone set-up?  Is it a must / requirement we need to be in a domain in order for Remote Desktop Connection to work?
Also, we have a Windows Server 2012 RDS CALs - 10 (software and licence key), will the licence key work for the Windows 2012 Server Standard?  We do not want to install the other Server mentioned which comes with CAL / licence key as its time consuming
to reinstall other programs.  I have installed  Server role service of Remote Desktop Licencing and automatically installed other associated services needed.  in the RD Licencing Manager, the Server had a red cross and I "Activate Server"
where I followed: http://www.concurrency.com/blog/rds8-add-a-licensing-server-2/#Install in Install Licences section and I have used the licence key of CAL - 10 mentioned above; it stated I have successfully completed the install licences wizard and displayed:
10 Windows Server 2012 - RDS Per User CAL installed, and in the RD Licensing Manager the server turned into a green tick and added the licence.
I then tested the Remote desktop connection from my PC and the same error message was there and checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and the same error messages was there.  I haven't restart the services of Remote Gateway / the server itself; do I really
    need to reboot server?
Any advice / guidance would be very much appreciated and this is a urgent matter.

  • "The backup disk image 'Volumes...sparsebundle' is already in use" error message

Since upgrading to Lion, I seem to be able to back up my MacBook over Wi-fi to an external hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme just fine.  However, if Time Machine is in the middle of a backup and I interrupt it by closing my MacBook hence putting it to sleep, next time my MacBook attempts a backup I get the message "This backup disk image "/Volumes....Macbook.sparsebundle" is already in use.  I've tried disconnecting all users from the hard drive in the Airport Utility, and then unplugging the hard drive and plugging it back in, and then it seems to backup fine, until I interrupt another backup, then the problem starts all over again.
I never had this problem before upgrading to Lion.  Suggestions?

NateCook, I'm experiencing the exact same issue.  I'd previously been enjoying how seamless Time Machine worked, wirelessly and automatically, to backup my MacBook Pro to a 2 TB drive attached to my Airport Extreme.  I also liked that I had the flexibility to plug that drive directly to my Mac, via FW800 or USB 2.0, if I needed to.  It would always work too, regardless of whether or not I interrupted a backup in progress.  Now, with Lion, I'm constantly getting the same  "This backup disk image "/Volumes....Macintosh.sparsebundle is already in use" error.  I fix it by restarting the Airport Extreme but that's a pain in the butt to have to do all the time.
Can you verify whether or not the recent OS X 1.0.7.1 update helps fix this in any way?  Or is the situation the same for you?
I'm loathe to "give in" and buy a Time Capsule to replace this setup, but I will if I have to... I want everything to work like it did before and I'm not willing to downgrade fom Lion back to Snow Leopard over this.  I was hoping Apple would fix it properly, but since this isn't a "supported configuration" (even though we know full well it works just fine) I was afraid Apple wouldn't focus on this as a priority.
I'm also a bit fearful that the same issue will occur with a Time Capsule.. hmm... my hunch is I'll be finding out soon enough.

  • Scanner in use error message. Print and scan doctor page not found

I have an officejet pro 8500a which is giving an error message: scanner in use.  it frequently does this and I reboot computer, turn off router and prnter and then turn all back on again and it usually works.  This time it won't.  I was directed to download the print and scan doctor but whether I enter the address in the url or click on the link I am directed to a page saying that it is not found.  What else can I do besides throw this through the window?

Hello @trishdg and welcome to the HP Forums!
Which operating system is on the computer you use the printer with?
If you make a Copy (as that uses the scanner) do you get any errors that indicate the scanner is in use then?
This Print and Scan Doctor link will start the download for you right away (meaning it doesn't take you to a page, that link starts the download as soon as you click on it ) so you won't feel the need to through anything out the window
