Lets All Take A Giant Step Backwards

[http://www.javafx.com/samples/BrickBreaker/]
So Sun put up a fancy "how to" JavaFX site thats supposed to show people how to program. Check out Figure 3, 4 and 6.
Im not trying to say that I know better than a Sun engineer, but does JavaFX just not have enums or what?
Almost every class is riddled with this stuff.
// Types of bricks
public def TYPE_BLUE = 0;
public def TYPE_BROKEN1 = 1;
public def TYPE_BROKEN2 = 2;
public def TYPE_BROWN = 3;
public def TYPE_CYAN = 4;
public def TYPE_GREEN = 5;
public def TYPE_GREY = 6;
public def TYPE_MAGENTA = 7;
public def TYPE_ORANGE = 8;
public def TYPE_RED = 9;
public def TYPE_VIOLET = 10;
public def TYPE_WHITE = 11;
public def TYPE_YELLOW = 12;
public class Brick extends CustomNode {
    // Type of the brick
    public-init var type: Integer;
        ImageView {
            image: bind Config.bricksImages[type]
def BRICKS_IMAGES = [
    "blue.png",
    "broken1.png",
    "broken2.png",
    "brown.png",
    "cyan.png",
    "green.png",
    "grey.png",
    "magenta.png",
    "orange.png",
    "red.png",
    "violet.png",
    "white.png",
    "yellow.png",
];The brick classes only state is an integer, which is an image[] offset. Woops?
public class Level extends CustomNode {
    // States
    // 0 - starting level
    // 1 - ball is catched
    // 2 - playing
    // 3 - game over
    var state = 0;Apparently they lack the standard library as well.
This is a gem from a "utils" class:
// Returns random integer number from 0 to max - 1
public function random(max: Integer): Integer {
    RANDOM.nextDouble() * max as Integer;

  • Snow Leopard's digital sound is a giant step backwards

    I have a Mac Pro connected to a Pioneer receiver using an optical cable. When I was running system 10.5 my DVD's would play in DVD player with 5.1 digital sound ( I have a surround sound system connected for the sound). With Snow Leopard all the DVD player application outputs is Dolby Pro logic. A big difference in sound. If I boot up in Windows Vista using Boot Camp and play the same DVD I get 5.1 digital sound. Something seems to be wrong in OSX 10.6. I am going to go back to 10.5 until Apple gets this sound thing fixed unless someone here can tell me how to get the 5.1 digital sound to work in 10.6. This is a huge let down for me, and it would seem to me to be a giant step backwards for the operating system.

    HI,
    This would make a good feedback topic for Apple.

    Note, they read feedback but do not respond. But since this worked in 10.5 then hopefully that will be taken into consideration. Audio is important!

  • Palm contacts software takes a big step backward

    I decided to buy a Palm Pre in large part because I wanted to preserve the investment I have made in the contacts database I have built up over the years using Palm devices.  I was more than a little disappointed when I discovered that Palm decided to seriously cripple the contacts software.  For example, all of my contact addresses have lost all of their granularity: what used to be articulated data in separate fields for street address, city, country, postal code, etc., is now in one amorphous pile.  And while I was hoping that Palm would finally allow contacts to be tagged with multiple categories, I found that instead Palm has discarded all of my category information and I can't add it back in.  I used to be able to jump from the display of one contact to the next by just pressing the down button, but that doesn't work any more: you actually have to back out of the display for one contact to bring up the display for the next one.  I used to be able to put in qualifying information for phone numbers, but now all Palm lets me enter are digits.  And don't get me started about Palm's decision to abandon Palm Desktop and make users pay for the ability to edit their contacts on their desktop.  I could go on, but I think you get the picture.  Was Palm really under the illusion that their market position was so invulnerable that they could display such contempt of their customer base?

    Hi, and welcome to the Palm Support Community.
    All of the issues you've raised, have been raised by others so you are not alone.  Going from something you know and are familiar with, to something that seems somehow "less", is frustrating.
    The issue with Contacts and lack of categories can be worked around to a degree, if you try using the Company field as a replacement for Category.  Then when you begin a search by simply typing that "category" all your contacts within that "Company" will display.  Not perfect, but it works for me.
    You do not need any third-party apps to simply edit contacts on your desktop, if you are using a Google or Yahoo Contacts database.  Just log into Google, open your contacts on your desktop, and any additions/edits will sync to your handheld.
    Lastly, I hardly think that Palm's design of webOS was the result of "contempt of their customer base."  It's just new.  But they also gave us the means to bring our data over to our new devices...not seamlessly in all cases, but I didn't lose anything in the transition.
    I'm fine with the Contacts app...Calendar is where it could use the most improvement IMHO.  I'm holding out hope that webOS update 1.4 (rumored on PreCentral and Sprint Forums to be due as soon as...dare I say it...today)  addresses some of the Calendar issues that I'd like to see.  We'll see...

  • Nokia Maps is a giant step backwards

    My relevant background - I live in Los Angeles, owned an HTC HD7S for more than a year and just recently got a Lumia 920. I like everything about my new 920 except vibration noise, and this horrid Nokia Maps app which is forced on us...
    Problems with Nokia Maps:
    Lack of integration with the rest of the operating system.
    Nokia maps is an island to itself. I click an address from a people hub contact, it opens Windows Phone Maps, not Nokia Maps. I click an address from a Bing search which has a dedicated hardware button, and it opens Windows Phone Maps, not Nokia Maps. I click an address in an email, you guessed it, it opens Windows Phone maps.
    Searching in Nokia Maps has terrible results
    I tried 3 searches today during the course of my day using Nokia Maps. Si Laa is a Thai restaurant I wanted to try a few miles from my house with an obviously unique name. The results I get are for Joyce Cafe, something in Germany and Slovenia. Next I try UPS in hopes it will find the company owned UPS Customer Center a quarter mile from my house. It doesn't find it at all, but does find alot of ups stores that are further away. Nokia Maps choked on another restaurant in Beverly Hills I tried to find. My wife's iPhone 4s had no problems with any of these.
    Local surface street traffic info is missing
    On the Lumia 920, I don't get any surface street traffic info. I do see traffic info for highways and freeways. I used to get local surface street traffic on my old HD7S Windows Map. Windows Phone Maps shows some sporadic street traffic data but is not quite right either. I called Nokia about it, the level 1 techie tells me I'm supposed to have local street traffic but has no further explanation and has escalated to level 2...
    Nokia removed the Windows Phone Maps.
    As shown in the first point above, Windows maps is still clearly on the phone, but Nokia removed the tile for it from the app list. There doesn't seem to be a way to directly open Windows maps. This would be fine except that Nokia maps, which is supposed to be the replacement, is worse than Windows Phone maps in so many ways.
    There isn't a single reason to use Nokia Maps over Windows Phone Maps.
    The only reason I use it is because Nokia has seen fit to make Windows Phone Maps hard to start by removing it from the apps list.
    Nokia should leave both map apps available and in the apps list.
    If Nokia Maps is the superior product, people will use it. Right now I'd say Windows Phone maps is superior in every way and that's a shame for Nokia who is supposed to be a mapping leader...

    Hi - Do you have latest versions? As mine works fine see below.

    I can select a contacts address, see it on the map, then request directions and then swith to drive each step with one tap of an option or icon

    You are correct.  However, a document can not be opened by another computer unless the document has first been open by an iDevice.
    iwork on iOS uses different file formats ( *.tef ) then iwork09 on Mac ( *.key , *. number , *.page ).
    Uploaded documents to icloud.com must first be updated to the *.tef format and then re-written to the cloud system. The online service behind the iwork web-app does the re-conversion to Mac formats, pdf or Microsoft office. All that is happening "in the cloud", not on your Mac as he misses the engine to do the transcoding from the *.tef to the other formats. Mac simply does not know what *.tef is.

  • Iphone won't let me take pictures because it says I have no storage, but I've deleted all my apps

    I have the Iphone 4 (not the 4s) and never had any problems.  I share an ICloud account with my parents and sister, and now my iphone is saying I have no storage.  I deleted all my pictures and a majority of my apps and it still won't let me take any pictures, purchase any apps, or update my phone because I have no storage.  I don't know what to do.

    Turn off iCloud on the device.  Does it work now?
    If it does, then it will be necessary to either stop sharing the iCloud account or purchase additional storage for it.
    If turning off iCloud does not work, try basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide of reset, restart, restore.

  • Belle - A big step backwards.

    Nokia Belle is a big a step backwards.
    1. Battery life has gone pathetic. My phone does not last 4 hours, while with anna, it lasted 18 hours.
    2. No way for user to kill background tasks. (App stop is not available for belle)
    3. No augmented reality apps. (No wikitude, not even Nokias live view, or city view)
    4. Top icons are not responsive anymore. I cannot click on battery icon and go to power saving mode.
    5. App installation takes twice as long.
    6. Many apps install, but do not work. (e.g. astroller).
    7. Six screens have too many apps running.
    Somebody PLEASE advise how to go back to anna?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    The whole Belle experience is vastly improved from Anna, more versatile , quicker, modern, feature filled and functional, try searching the user guide on the phone, spend some time exploring it, you may find you're being over critical, The update is a MAJOR software change, not a slight update, it's like getting a brand new phone, spend a couple of days tinkering and you may turn out to really like it
    I cannot for the life of me recognise the Belle improvements.
    Experience is vastly improved=> can you name some of the improvements?
    more versatile: examples?
    quicker=> No noticable difference as far as I can tell.
    modern=> you mean ugly
    feature filled=> What features? I only miss features I had with Anna
                                      (eye candy isn't a feature in my opinion)
    functional=> How is removing features functional?
    My experience:
    Widgets are bigger and clunky and cannot be configured. I have tried everything, but
          I cannot make my homescreens look as nice and neat as I had them with Anna.
         Moreover, I need MORE homescreens for the same info.
    The highly functional date/clock/profile widget I enjoyed in Anna is no longer available.
          Now all I get is a BIG ugly clock and an ugly grey profile widget that does not show self-
          created profiles (I created an Outdoor profile, because the Anna standard one is no
          longer there!)
    Ugly text under the shortcut icons that cannot be removed (a choice would have been
          nice)
    Widget online/offline toggle is no longer available.
    I can only access 'Open applications' by long pressing the menu button. I liked the
         menu option better. I do not want to wear out my menu button or have the bottom of my
         phone drop off. I love my N8 and do not want to lose it anytime soon. Forcing me to use
         hardware buttons when there perfectly fine menu options in Anna is just plain annoying.
    I can no longer create folders within folders. (Yes I liked that feature!)
    I can no longer switch homescreens by clicking on the software button on the bottom
          middle of the screen. (Yes, I used that a lot)
    I can no longer turn on battery saving by clicking on the battery. Now I have to either
          press the power button or dive into the menu.
    I liked the notification widget much better than that eyecandy slide down notification bar.
    I can no longer access the connectivity menu via the homescreen. I need to go to
          menu/settings/connectivity.
    With Anna, connection settings were easier. When on the road, my 3G connection was
         automatically selected and whenever I was within range of a known WiFi connection,
         that connection was automatically selected. With Belle I have to set the internet
         connection to ask what connection I want. The only other option is to hardcode either
         3G or a specific WiFi network. If that selected connection is not available, the
         connection fails. So now when I access the internet I first have to select the desired
         accesspoint. How's that an improvement?
    I do not have more RAM available than I had before (80MB-90MB) and my phone does not run smoother/faster than under Anna (which was just as smooth/fast on my phone, I had no complaints!). And yes my phone was empty when I upgraded. Before I upgraded I synchronised my contacts/messages/photo's and uninstalled all apps I had installed and then performed a soft reset. The phone was empty, like I just got it from the store. I currently do not use a microSD and install all apps on the mass storage (not on C.
    I am the kind of person that buys and uses the phone that I like and that gives me the functionality that I need. I do not feel any need to impress my friends. If they don't like my phone, tough! I am the one using it, so I am the only one who has to like it. All this added Eye Candy is therefore useless to me. Couldn't they just have added the eye candy without removing the handy Anna features? Then everybody would have been happy.
    Someone please tell me what it is that I am, judging by your comments, obviously missing!!! Let me know what I have overlooked, because I love Nokia and I love Symbian and I want to love Belle, but I just cannot. :-(

  • Lion is a step backwards

    Lion is a step backwards that appears to indicate a philosophical switch towards dumbing down. I realize there's lots of Mac newbies coming from iPads, iPhones, and iPods. I have no problem simplifying things for the masses, but why make the Mac OS less useful for your loyal power users? Why can am I no longer make the choices I once did? Lion makes me feel like I'm on Windows. I can only do things the way I'm allow me to, and I now must conform unlike before. I used to be able to configure my Macs to work the way I want them to. No more. A few examples:
    1. I cannot assign apps to spaces. Those settings are gone. As a result, I have apps on top of each other which I hate. Even if drag one from one desktop to another within Mission Control, they eventually wind up on top of each other. Going full screen with the apps that can do that just creates other irritants. Why take away this control? How is it an improvement not allowing me to use my computer the way I want? I hate Mission Control because I have no control over it. This is a major issue for me.
    2. I cannot access the dock from a full screen app. It doesn't show when my nearly ten year habit occurs. As a result, what once took a single click can take up to 5 gestures to get to the app I want. Thank God Apple hasn't taken away command+tab. Why throw away an ability I've used since 10.0? How is this better?
    3. My home library folder is now hidden. I must be stupid and in need of protection from myself. Is Apple sure we will NEVER have to toss a corrupt preference file again? Yes there are work arounds, but why hide something the masses rarely messed with in the first place? At least add a "make visible" check box within Info for those of us who know what we're doing.
    4. I like my devices at the top of my Finder windows because I have a lot of networked devices, but I'm FORCED to have them only at the bottom. Why can't I arrange my sidebar the way I want? This just feels like change for the sake of change without giving me any choice.
    5. Many .dmgs open their own window for easy drag and drop installations. Once done, I always clicked the button in the upper right to show the sidebar to eject the .dmg. Gone! Why is it better for me to have to switch windows or go to the desktop to eject a .dmg? Why are extra steps better?
    I'll quit here, but all of this suggests a philosophical shift that assumes I can no longer be trusted to configure my Macs to run the way I want. This appears to be the beginning of the end of what made Macs so great. Lion is a step backwards for the faithful.

    joeblowinski wrote:

    That is true. I can't speculate on Apple thoughts on this issue. I can say that many applications had problems with Spaces and it was the source of many complaints. Apple listened and tried to make a change that would be useful to more people. Unfortunately, those few people who were using Spaces effectively are now out of luck.
    2. I cannot access the dock from a full screen app.
    Full screen mode is designed to isolate you from the system. If you really want to access the Dock, you have to mean it. Move the mouse to where the Dock should be. Then, try to go further. The Dock should then appear.
    3. My home library folder is now hidden.
    That is true. Apple is trying to discourge people from going in there. Most people will only do harm. This is certainly a work in progress. On day 1 of Lion's release, one of my first posts was to instruct someone to go in and delete some Dock preference files for a corrupted LaunchPad. In the Finder, just type Shift ⌘ g and enter "~/Library".
    4. I like my devices at the top of my Finder windows because I have a lot of networked devices, but I'm FORCED to have them only at the bottom. Why can't I arrange my sidebar the way I want?
    I think Apple is trying to move the OS towards more document-centric use rather than dumping them right into the root of the file system. I'm sure there are many ways to give you the same functionality. I suggest starting a new thread for that question.
    5. Many .dmgs open their own window for easy drag and drop installations. Once done, I always clicked the button in the upper right to show the sidebar to eject the .dmg. Gone! Why is it better for me to have to switch windows or go to the desktop to eject a .dmg? Why are extra steps better?
    You can eject it from the File menu or with ⌘ e.
    I'll quit here, but all of this suggests a philosophical shift that assumes I can no longer be trusted to configure my Macs to run the way I want.
    Apple trusts you. It is the other 40 million unwashed they don't trust. The sad? fact is that Apple is getting more popular now than it has ever been. Apple is trying ways to make the system easy enough for Windows or even Linux users to use. Old timers like us, used to working in a certain way, need to adapt. You don't have to do everything Apple's way. There are alternatives even to the Finder. Just give it some time and explore some new ways of doing thing.

  • DE:  A Real Step Backwards

    This software is a real step backwards from Adobe Reader 7 - when it comes to ebooks. I've never seen an upgrade go so backwards. I guess adobe is hoping to quickly get out of this particular business.
    With ebooks in Reader 7, I could:
    *underline text
    *highlight text
    *add notes
    *put a copy of books on my cell phone PDA
    With this awful software I can't do any of those things. And how useless are books that you can't even underline in!? I mean the whole reason to have electronic books is that you can underline and add notes to that you can later search on. That's what makes these so advantageous over real books. But all that functionality has been taken out of this stupid Digital Editions software.
    You pay ebooks.com MORE for an ebook than you can get the real book for on amazon and they have far less functionality. You can't even take notes! And the book won't be usable when the next edition of the software comes out.
    All those books I bought (hundreds of dollars worth) are now totally worthless and unusable. I can't read any of them now.
    I highly caution anyone when thinking about buying ebooks in this format. ADOBE MAY OR MAY NOT MAKE YOUR BOOKS READABLE IN THE NEXT VERSION!
    This is a very dangerous way to buy ebooks. I'm so pissed that I paid FULL PRICE with ebooks.com to buy electronic books that only lasted a few months. Now all that money is wasted. When I complain to them they just say "Hey, it's not our fault... talk to Adobe."

    Yes, that's right... Joe summed up our frustrations very nicely. I really get tired of people calling other people trolls just because they disagree with them or take offense at their remarks. I think Joe actually had a great point. I think Adobe has been lazy as hell on this. I don't know - either lazy or brain dead. But honestly, this is the most brain-dead product I think I've ever seen. It's horrible. It's many steps backwards. It's a total embarrassment to the proud Adobe family.
    I'm an avid e-book reader and am very happy to have recently discovered ereader.com. No, I don't like their format as much as the original Adobe 7 pdf format for ebooks. But you know what - they get the job done. I can read books on my iphone and my windows pda AND my computer! And, I haven't had a bit of trouble loading it to any device I want. As long as I know the code to unlock the book I can read it on anything. Currently all my books are on 4 devices. And there hasn't been the slightest hassle getting them unlocked on these devices. It used to be hellish every time I'd open anything on Adobe Reader 7 - if I had gone several weeks without opening them. You'd get these crazy messages saying your software was no longer validated, and your books aren't licensed - then you'd go to the site to fill in the information which would ALWAYS be rejected several times before being accepted. And there was no customer support you could write or call. What a nightmare!
    I can highlight text in the ereader software... can't underline so that's a bit of a drawback. But I can make notes. Not as nice as adobe 7 - but much better than this new version. It's not as full featured as I'd like, but they're adding features very quickly. But the main thing for now is that it works on my iphone and my windows pda. So at least I have portable books again.
    Oh - and it NEVER crashes on my iphone or pda! Adobe reader for mobile sued to crash fairly frequently and it would lose my place in books. So far I've read a few hundred pages in ereader books and not a single crash and not once have I lost my place.
    Adobe, I'm afraid in this interim period where you seemed to think customers could go without their ebooks for some number of months or years until you get your act together, I've found another solution. Oh and I should mention - if you had been willing to give a date when you projected having one - I just might have waited. For instance, if you had said "we're gonna have a new version for iphone in December" I totally would have waited and it wouldn't even have occurred to me to search for something else.
    Since I've already bought about $100 worth of books, ereader is not a solution I'll want to change anytime soon. And with their frequent feature upgrades I don't think it's a solution I'll NEED to change anytime soon.
    Funny thing is - I started this thread back in June. At that time I had already gone several months without a viable eReader and I was willing to wait awhile for Adobe to gets its act together. And from them I waited another 3-4 months until September. Then I discovered ereader as an app from the app store on iphone. I tried it reluctantly. Didn't love it - but a few days later they came out with an upgrade that had a bunch of improvements.
    And they're promising an upgrade where we can take notes, make highlights and underlines and search text - ON OUR IPHONE AND PDAs!!

    There's no question IOS7 is advanced but the bright white back ground is a step backwards. It makes the iPhone harder to read.
    In particular all photos or any slide show since the beginning of time have always had a black background. Not white. At the very least, the viewing of pictures should have a black back ground. I hope maybe you can introduce some gadgets or an upgrade that lets us choose something other than the bright white background. The accessibility option to inverse the video is awful. All your pics are negatives. I would hope you are hearing many similar comments and I look forward to an upgrade soon that gives us options to change that bright white.  If I could I would set my iPhone back to IOS6.
    The new IOS also kills your battery no matter it seems how many location services and other apps you disable.

    For some people. I find it easier to read.

    Why is Plus a step backward in technology? In Desktop, I can run multiple sessions with each running multiple reports. There are days I have 4 or more sessions running with multiple reports going. Also, if I find a report I found from someone else and need just one tab, I can pull that one tab out into another report or pull it out to make a new report with just that tab. In Plus, I am stuck with only 1 session, 1 report. If I want to add that tab to an existing report, I have to rebuild it in that report or resave it and delete all the tabs I don't want which takes a long time. Not very productive. Also, when I run reports in Plus that were created in Desktop, I have to go to 2 locations to get rid of the NULL in any field that there isn't any data to change that to 0 or blank. In Plus, it is also very hard to organize reports by topic. In Desktop, I can save them out on my network in seperate folders -- example: Actual vs Budget reports. In Plus, that is not possible. Can Plus have the option of creating subfolders for the user to have some organization??? Then to export a crosstab into excel, I have to create a formula to pull down each row down. I found this: Exporting to excel not repeating items in each row on how to do that. Still no word from our IS people if they can change the settings. When I do the formula, I cannot have any page items set to ALL. It doesn't like it. Also not very productive if I want to pull out different data using the same reports but with different page item settings w/o rebuilding or changing conditions/parameters. What am I missing or can these issues be fixed? I am not the only person at this company that has these views. Some are kicking and screaming at the project manager on this switch.

    Hi
    Do you have the same version of Desktop and Plus?
    Try to modify the wb in Plus and open it in Desktop.

  • Version 3.1.0.1007 of Skype is the worst yet and a massive step backwards!!

    Version 3.1.0.1007 of Skype is the worst yet and a massive step backwards!!  This is what happens when a bloatware software company takes over small company with a good and efficient application. This was all too predictable - Microsoft should have stuck with Messenger (even that was better than this latest Skype turd) and left Skype alone! 1. Changing status involves opening Skype, then selecting "Settings", then "Options" and even then there's no "Away" or "Not Available" options!!! 2. The options to view a contact's profile appears to have vanished!3. Right clicking on the Skype icon on the task bar doesn't allow you to "Quit" Skype  and that's only 3 of the main issues!! Then there's no simple "List" view of contacts which means viewing them takes up far too much screen space and then scrolling through them - NO WAY will I be importing my 4,000 Outlook contacts! THAT IS IF THERE WAS A WAY TO INCLUDE THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!! Clearly Microsoft STILL hasn't got the message..... it doesn't know better and PC users DON'T want to have the "Metro" interface continually rammed down their throats!!! PLEASE DO NOT RELEASE HALF BAKED SOFTWARE THAT FAILS TO EVEN MEET THE BASIC FUNCTIONALITY OF THE OLDER VERSION!!! I like much of what I've seen of  Windows 10 but this **bleep** really turns me off big time!!

    Somebody please help me

    Connect the iPad to iTunes, and do the update with iTunes.
    The 4.1.2 ipsw file will not work, no longer supported.
    The incremental update directly on the iPad does not work either, unless you are already on iOS 5.
    Let iTunes do the job, you already lost too much time by doing it yourself.

  • Reader 9 has a bug, Reader X is a step backward.

    I upgraded to X because the latest reader 9 wasn't highlighting search / find terms consistently. Now with X, not only does it superficially look like a older version of reader, the toolbar customization is difficult, limited, and the search / find box is gone unless you hit the find button (or ctrl + F or apple + F). I use this feature all the time in writing scientific publications where I have to find a key word quickly when I'm reviewing articles and its very handy to just have the search bar on the toolbar. It just seems like this version has less features and versatility than the last. But the last has a bug, so I'm left with two less-than-optimal PDF viewers instead. Sure the some of the new features are going to be nice with X, but overall I think they took a step backwards with this new version, and should have fixed the bug from 9.4.5 first.

    I believe it was fixed with the 9.4/8.2.5 updates. See page 5 of the following: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83708/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_ReleaseNote_9.4_8.2.5. pdf
