Level 3 postscript in Photoshop

A technician for our CTP system says that Photoshop CS3 does not directly support postscript level 3. He says that Photoshop does not take advantage of 1024 levels of gray and thus is more prone to banding than gradients created in InDesign or Illustrator. If Photoshop files are linked to InDesign it still uses the inherent NON level 3 embedded with it and thus is more banding prone. Is this true? I have a hard time believing that and it is pertinent to an issue we are working with.
Thanks

Hello Pedro,
I think you can because it is the L3 logical device that has to be associated to the VRF.
Have you tried and have you got any issues ?
Hope to help

  • Prompt for Levels not working in Photoshop CC

    Hi,
I was helped on here a few months ago about a script that would promopt the user to create a levels adjustment layer, set the levels and then the script would be able to call the information again and apply the levels without user intervention.
Since upgrading to Photoshop CC it has stopped working correctly and I can't figure out why as it doesn't come up with any errors. It works on the prompt, alows the user to enter levels ect but when it comes to apply it to the next image it will just create an unaltered levels adjustment and move on. The script is below, any help would be much appreciated!
    /// user prompt
    var newLevelsDesc = newLevels();
    //// apply levels without user
    executeAction( charIDToTypeID('Mk  '), newLevelsDesc, DialogModes.NO );
    function newLevels() {
        try{
    var desc2 = new ActionDescriptor();
    var ref1 = new ActionReference();
    ref1.putClass( charIDToTypeID('AdjL') );
    desc2.putReference( charIDToTypeID('null'), ref1 );
    var desc3 = new ActionDescriptor();

This seems to work in Photoshop CC.

  • I can't make a new level through selection (Adobe Photoshop Elements 9/Windows 7)

Just in english? Not necessarily, you'll find discussions in German too, and forum users can use the 'translate' button on the right part of the bottom action bar.
I can understand German and if it's a question I can't answer myself, I'll provide the translation if you wish for more competent users. I don't use the projects myself, as I prefer to work totally manually; if you state which kind of Elements project you are doing, others may better understand your problem.
Generally, copying a selection on a new layer is done with the keyboard shortcut 'Ctrl J'.
Can you give the exact error message in German?

  • How Can You Bring Illustrator Cs5 Layers into Photoshop Cs5?

Hi everyone, Is it possible to bring Illustrator artwork into Photoshop so that the layers in Illustrator are layers in Photoshop, and so that all the content is arranged as it was in Illustrator.
What I have been doing is bringing in a shape or a group of shapes into Photoshop by pasting them into a layer in PS then bringing in some more stuff from another layer in Illustrator and pasting that into another layer in PS but obviously it's a mission to line up the contents again so it is arranged like it was in Illustrator in the first place.
    Any help appreciated
    thanks Gareth

No, it doesn't say how to do it there
Well, then you probably haven't read carefully enough about what can be set up when exporting as .psd in Illustrator.
When you export as .psd there are several export options about preserving layers. As mentioned, there are some restrictions.
But tell me, what is unclear about the following quote?
    Write Layers
Exports groups, compound shapes, nested layers, and slices as separate, editable Photoshop layers. Nested layers that are more than five levels deep are merged into a single Photoshop layer. Select Maximum Editability to export transparent objects (that is, objects with an opacity mask, a constant opacity less than 100%, or a blending mode other than Normal) as live, editable Photoshop layers.
    Preserve Text Editability
Exports horizontal and vertical point type in layers (including nested layers up to five levels deep) to editable Photoshop type. If doing so compromises the appearance of the artwork, you can deselect this option to rasterize the text instead.
    Maximum Editability
Writes each top-level sublayer to a separate Photoshop layer if doing so doesn’t compromise the appearance of the artwork. Top-level layers become Photoshop layer sets. Transparent objects remain editable transparent objects. Also creates a Photoshop shape layer for each compound shape in a top‑level layer if doing so doesn’t compromise the appearance of the artwork. To write compound shapes with solid strokes, change the Join type to Round. Whether or not you select this option, all layers over 5 levels deep are merged into a single Photoshop layer.

    Hello
We are currently having a beta for Measurement Studio. This is a public beta where we let customers evaluate beta software versions of the next release of Measurement Studio. If you can go to the beta site ( http://ni.com/beta ) and sign up for the Measurement Studio beta, you can evaluate this behavior in the newer CWGraph control and see if it provides you the desired behavior.
The main reason you are seeing problems like this is that the ControlImage function selects 600 dpi to draw the image out, since this is a standard number that works with most printers. The 7.1 controls will now provide a ControlImageEx function that lets you select the dpi for the image. The standard for most screens is 96 dpi.
    Please email the beta coo
rdinator( [email protected] ) once you have signed up.
    I hope this helps

  • Levels | script

    Hi
Though there are various ways to adjust an image in PS, one such way is to use Levels. The attached screen capture shows there's no details in Shadow and Highlight. This means the values to be corrected for this particular channel. Can this be automated? What we do manually is to adjust the input values so that the tiny bar sits directly below the starting of the levels. Can we automate this particular task?
The script should find out whether the curve starts from 0th point or from somewhere else, if it starts from somewhere else then the input value should be moved to that starting point of the curve. Similarly, the output value should end where the curvature ends and not necessarily its at 255th position. Attached the necessary screen captures & original files. Any thought on this ?

    DOM
adjustLevels ( inputRangeStart , inputRangeEnd , inputRangeGamma , outputRangeStart , outputRangeEnd ); Adjusts the levels of the selected channels
    where           number [0..253] number [(start + 2)..255] number [0.10..9.99] number [0..253] number [(start + 2)..255]
autoLevels(); Adjusts the levels of the selected channels using the auto levels option.
    ActionManager
Photoshop has an Levels Options... preset for that for all color channels so install the scriptlistener plug-in and record Levels>Options>Enhance Per Chanel Contrast and grabe the script code recorded by the plug-in.

  • RGB Curves / Levels

Having used Lightroom since it was in beta - pre version 1 release - there is one feature that I find myself swapping to Photoshop for more than anything else.
That is the levels adjustment layers and auto levels feature. Specifically, the ability to control not just the overall levels but the levels of each of the RGB channels.
I find the curves adjustment in Lightroom far easier to use than the curves in Photoshop, so if Lightroom's curves could do RGB as well as overall I would be very happy.
I find it strange that the Lightroom histogram shows levels for RGB and CMYK but you cannot control them...

Simon, I see what you're saying, but there are features in Lightroom as it stands that probably aren't used by the majority of users. I know I rarely use some options in the develop module.
I think if an 'auto levels' option, like in Photoshop, was available this would please a lot of users who think the current auto tone options don't always fit the job.
If you have an 'auto adjust' button you then have two basic options: 1) undo the changes, 2) accept the changes. You also have a third, more advanced option of accepting the changes and 'tweaking' the settings to your hearts content.
Your average user, myself included, would most frequently use the first two options, saving time and disk space of editing in PS.
Unless there are other ways to remove colour casts from images? As an example, I recently took photos which included lots of snow with clear blue skies. They were too blue all over for my liking and the white balance in LR didn't do it. I export to PS and auto level, slight tweak and I'm happy.
This would probably require a bunch of changes to Adobe Camera RAW, so probably not an option for the current version. Would be nice to have the option, or indeed an SDK in future releases.
    Cheers, Damon.

  • Where to start with Adobe Photoshop

I need a program to do editing, composing, etc. that does more than Printshop. I know Adobe Photoshop is the "top of the line" for design and publishing. There are SO many different versions and upgrades. It is very confusing. I don't want to make a costly mistake.
So.....what is the entry level version of Adobe Photoshop? Also do I need the upgrades that seem to be offered with each version? Thanks so much for any input.

Unless you intend to use Photoshop for professional graphic design work (in which case you have a long learning curve ahead just to get conversant enough with the program to start), the much less expensive Photoshop Elements is all you need.

  • The Quick selection took is causing my Mac's Photoshop to freeze and has to be force quit?? Help

Photoshop was been working fine for just under a year and all the functions have worked as they should but all of a sudden every time i use the Select tool (Auto select tool) it just just freezes and the loading wheal come up (only a very small part of the picture selects before it freezes). I then have to fource quit out of photoshop, then i can open it up again and it will just do the same?  I need a quick fix as i am doing Photography for an A-level and i need photoshop for my exam. Can anyone help?

You should update your operating system to OSX 10.10.1 or better still the latest version 10.10.2
After updating the OS it’s also best to trash the prefs.
    Quit PSE12 if its running.
Launch Finder and find the user Library by clicking the Go menu whilst holding down the Optn (alt) key (n.b. the library is hidden until you press the optn key) and inside the Library folder select the preferences folder. Then trash the following files:
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 settings

I´m doing some updating in my Creative Cloud, and PhotoShop will not be updated... Somebody knows why?? I just get the message «Updating failed»...

You could try re-installing Photoshop on top of itself from the direct install downloads.  Once re-installed the will be back leveled to the first level. Then try Photoshop menu Help>Updates it may work. It worked for me with  Photoshop CC . My Photoshop CC 2014 was OK.  The direct download links follow.  Pleas read their download instructions. If you do not you will be denied access.

  • Just did a Mac update yesterday for Yosemite and I can not open a picture in elements with out it crashing.  Spent over 4 hours with Mac and it came down to an Adobe Issue with the New Photo which is replacing the I photo. Elements does not recognize it,

Does anyone know a direct number for adobe that will not cost you to just ask about their program which will not work with a new mac update!

You can do that in iPhoto, too. Just go to the iphoto prefs>advanced, and set PSE as your external editor. Note that the actual editor is not the file at the top level of Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements < version number >, but rather hidden away inside the Support Files folder:
Then you just right the click the photo in iphoto and choose edit with external editor.
If you have the new Photos app, you can't drag and drop, either.

  • FAQ: What features use the GPU and how do I troubleshoot GPU issues?

    Photoshop CS6 GPU FAQ
    Introduction
This document provides a quick reference guide to video card usage in Photoshop.  Some features require a compatible video card to work; if the video card or its driver is defective or unsupported, those features will not work at all.  Other features use the video card for acceleration and if the card or driver is defective those features will run more slowly.
    Mercury Graphics Engine
The Mercury Graphics Engine (MGE) represents features that use video card, or GPU, acceleration. In Photoshop CS6, this new engine delivers near-instant results when editing with key tools such as Liquify, Warp, Lighting Effects and the Oil Paint filter. The new MGE delivers unprecedented responsiveness for a fluid feel as you work.
MGE is new to Photoshop CS6, and uses both the OpenGL and OpenCL frameworks. It does not use the proprietary CUDA framework from nVidia.
In order to use MGE, you must have a supported video card and updated driver. If you do not have a supported card, performance will be degraded. In most cases the acceleration is lost and the feature runs in the normal CPU mode. However, there are some features that will not work without a supported video card.
GPU features added in Photoshop CS6
Adaptive Wide Angle Filter (compatible video card required)
Liquify (accelerated by compatible video card with 512MB VRAM, GPU mode unavailable on Windows XP)
Oil Paint (compatible video card required)
Warp and Puppet Warp (accelerated by compatible video card, GPU mode unavailable on Windows XP)
Field Blur, Iris Blur, and Tilt/Shift (accelerated by compatible video
card supporting OpenCL, GPU mode unavailable on Windows XP)
Lighting Effects Gallery (compatible video card required with 512MB
    VRAM, unavailable on Windows XP)
New 3D enhancements (3D features in Photoshop require a compatible video card with 512MB VRAM, unavailable on Windows XP):
    Draggable Shadows
    Ground plane reflections
    Roughness
    On-canvas UI controls

    GPU/OpenGL preferences in Photoshop CS6
The advantages of using a compatible video card (GPU) with Photoshop are that you can experience better performance and more features.   Problems can occur if you have an older video card with limited VRAM or if you use other programs at the same time as Photoshop that use the GPU.
Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS).
In the Performance panel, make sure Use Graphics Processor is selected in GPU Settings.
Click Advanced Settings and specify the following options:
    Mode > Basic
    Mode > Normal
Mode > Advanced Provides the benefits of Normal mode as well as newer OpenGL advances that can result in improved performance.
Use Graphics Processor to Accelerate Computation
Use OpenCL Uses the GPU to accelerate the new blur filters (Field Blur, Iris Blur, and Tilt-Shift) – OpenCL will only be available on newer GPUs that support OpenCL v1.1 or higher
Anti-Alias Guides And Paths Allows the GPU hardware to smooth the edges of drawn guides and paths.
30 Bit Display (Windows only) Allows Photoshop to display 30 bit data directly to screen on video cards that support it
    Quick GPU Troubleshooting Steps
You can experience problems such as artifacts, errors, and crashes if there are incompatibilities between Photoshop and the display components that access the GPU.
If you experience crashes, incorrectly rendered windows or objects, redraw issues, or performance issues while running Photoshop, first determine whether OpenGL is causing the problem.
    Turn off OpenGL.
Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS).
In the Performance panel, uncheck Use Graphics Processor. Click OK.
Restart Photoshop, and perform the same function.
If the problem recurs while OpenGL Drawing is disabled, OpenGL is not the cause. For additional troubleshooting, see Troubleshoot system errors and freezes | Adobe software on Windows (cpsid_82252) or Troubleshoot system errors and freezes | Adobe software on Mac OS 10.x (cpsid_82414).
If the problem resolves, proceed with the rest of the troubleshooting steps to fix OpenGL.
Make sure that you're using the latest update of Photoshop.Updates fix bugs and issues.
Update the display driver.Updated display drivers can fix many issues, such as crashing, incorrectly rendered objects, and performance problems. Determine what video card you have and go directly to the manufacturer's website (nVidia or ATI/AMD) and download the latest driver. (Note: Simply doing a Windows Update is does not guarantee you are using the latest driver. You must go directly to the nVideo or ATI/AMD websites to get the absolute latest driver.) After you update your driver, turn on Use Graphics Processor in Photoshop preferences.
    Reset preferences.
Resetting preferences returns OpenGL settings to their default status. Reset Photoshop preferences by pressing and holding Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option+Command (Mac OS) immediately after you start Photoshop.
Click Yes when asked if you want to delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File.
Retry the function that caused the problem.
Change the OpenGL mode to Basic.
Setting the OpenGL mode to Basic uses the least amount of GPU memory and the most basic GPU feature set.
    Close all documents.
Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS)
In the Performance panel, click the GPU Settings Advanced Settings button.
    Choose Mode > Basic
    Restart Photoshop.
If this solution resolves the problem, switch to Normal mode. See if the issue recurs. If the issue recurs, return to Basic mode.
Note:  If you’re changing GPU preferences to troubleshoot a problem, re-launch Photoshop after each change.
If you are using more than one video adapter, remove the additional cards.
Multiple video adapters can cause problems with GPU accelerated or enabled features in Photoshop. It's best to connect two (or more) monitors into one video adapter. If you have to use more than one video adapter, make sure that they are the same make and model. Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
Note: Using two video adapters does not enhance Photoshop's performance.
    Check your Cache Levels setting.
If you've set your Cache Levels to 1 in Photoshop preferences, you can experience performance issues with GPU features. Reset Cache Levels to the default setting, which is 4.
Choose Edit > Preferences > Performance (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS)
In the Performance panel, choose Cache Levels > 4.
    The GPU Sniffer
To help guard against Photoshop crashes related to bad GPU hardware or drivers, Photoshop employs a small program called the GPU Sniffer. Every time Photoshop is launched, Photoshop launches the sniffer. The sniffer runs rudimentary tests of the GPU and reports the results to Photoshop. If the sniffer crashes or reports a failure status to Photoshop, Photoshop will not use the GPU. The Use Graphics Hardware checkbox in the Performance panel of the Preferences will be unchecked and disabled.
The first time the sniffer fails, Photoshop will display a dialog indicating that it has detected a problem with the GPU. On subsequent launches the dialog will not appear unless the Photoshop preferences are reset.
If the user corrects the problem, either by replacing the video card or by updating the driver, then the sniffer will pass on the next launch and the Use Graphics Hardware checkbox will be enabled and returned to its previous state (enabled or disabled).
Tested video cards for Photoshop CS6
Adobe tested the following video cards before the release of Photoshop CS6. This document lists the video card by series. While the minimum amount of VRAM supported on video cards for Photoshop CS6 is 256MB, some features require 512MB of VRAM to be enabled.
Note: Adobe tested laptop and desktop versions of the following cards. Be sure to download the latest driver for your specific model. (Laptop and desktop versions have slightly different names.)
    nVidia GeForce 8000, 9000, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 series
    nVidia Quadro 400, 600, 2000, 4000 (Mac & Win), CX, 5000, 6000
    AMD/ATI Radeon 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 series

Intel Intel HD Graphics, Intel HD Graphics P3000, Intel HD Graphics P4000
Note: ATI X1000 series and nVidia 7000 series cards are no longer being tested and are not officially supported in CS6 – some basic GL functionality may be available for both these cards.
Note: 3Dand some Open GL features are disabled on Windows XP, as stated on : http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/photoshopcs6/

I've had several timeout since the pings were started. Got a some response times > 1ms (nothing greater than 7 or 8ms), but no timeouts.

  • Can print PS file but not make PDF

Printing to a PostScript printer with a customized PostScript driver in WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS is what we do every day, but when we print the same job to a PS file we can't make a PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.4. What can we do to make a PDF? Here is the error message from Distiller:
    Processing prologue.ps...
    Done processing prologue.ps.
%%[ Error: rangecheck; OffendingCommand: setpagedevice; ErrorInfo: InputAttributes --nostringval-- ]%%
    Stack:
    -dict-
    -save-
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
If I knew what to edit in the PS file to make it print a PDF, that would be one workaround. But I'm very curious why our printer (HP LaserJet 4050 with a Level 2 PostScript emulator) will print a file that Distiller won't process. Here is the only place in the PS file that mentions setpagedevice:
    /manualfeed true put usertime 5000 add {dup usertime lt {pop exit} if} loop <</InputAttributes <<31<< /PageSize [612 792] /MediaType (Standard) >>/Priority []>> >>setpagedevice << /PageSize [612 792] /MediaType (Standard) >> setpagedevice _bp 0 13200 10200 _ornt /PlantinR 400 _ff
    0 13200 10200 _ornt
"612 792" is, of course, the page size in points
Trying to make the PDF from the the PS file that was meant for another PostScript printer (HP LaserJet 2200D), we get the same Distiller error message. This time the PS file contains:
    letter <</InputAttributes <<-1<< /PageSize [612 792]  /MediaType (Standard) >>/Priority []>> >>setpagedevice << /PageSize [612 792]  /MediaType (Standard) >> setpagedevice _bp 0 13200 10200 _ornt /PlantinR 400 _ff
    0 13200 10200 _ornt
This passage from the 2nd attempt has much in common with the first PS attempt. What does Distiller mean by the InputAttributes having "nostringval"? What stringval would work?
By substituting this from an uncustomized driver that does work,
letter statusdict begin true setduplexmode false settumble end _bp 0 13200 10200 _ornt /PlantinR 400 _ff
    0 13200 10200 _ornt
and by removing an offending command BRst, a PDF is created. But it doesn't have any of the special fonts that were downloaded. Still, that's progress.

Thank you. The first line of the PS file is "%!PS-Adobe", so I conclude that the origin of the uncustomized PostScript driver was Adobe; WordPerfect Corp. supplied it to purchasers of their software. Uncustomized (except for new Type 3 fonts), the PostScript driver still works splendidly for creating PS files that are easily distilled into PDFs. We only use Adobe software for this purpose.
By editing parts of the problem PS file I am just now able to get the PDF. But it requires replacing the following on every page:
    letter <</InputAttributes <<-1<< /PageSize [612 792]  /MediaType (Standard) >>/Priority []>> >>setpagedevice << /PageSize [612 792]  /MediaType (Standard) >> setpagedevice _bp 0 13200 10200 _ornt /PlantinR 400 _ff0 13200 10200 _ornt
    with this:

I will continue working these codes. It ought to be possible to get paging codes that are less laborious to replace or otherwise get working, and obviously some of the codes can be eliminated.
We're not in a position to give up our highly customized driver for mathematical logic printing on paper until a volume of historical text is finished. Smoother produced PDFs must be possible for an electronic edition.
The other snag I mentioned, "BRst", came from a text file of "pskeys" that was to be downloaded with the job. It works when I simply insert pskeys.txt into the PS file.

  • How to?  Working images on main computer drive and backup to externals?

    Hi there---
Right now I work in Bridge CS3 and Photoshop and have a workflow and image management system that works for me. But I want to see if I can integrate Lightroom, which I just installed.
I skimmed Martin Evening's book and I am still not sure I can do the following:
Can I keep 3-6 months worth of images on my working computer drive, backing up regularly as I always do, and then erase them on my working computer drive while keeping them on my two backup drives? Or does the Lightroom database not allow you to work that way. My read of Evening is that he works entirely off the external disks. But I don't want to do that. My external disks are just for backups only and I want to keep it that way.
When I would need something from 3-6 months ago, then I'd want to be able to fire up the backup drives and retrieve.
Any suggestions on whether I can do this and how I would do this would be great!
    Thanks, Paul

Thanks! Is there a "how to" posted somewhere about this?? I need workflow suggestions and I'm coming up blank.
Currently, I put a new yyyy-mm-dd-nameofshoot folder for every shoot which contains a folder with the original RAW files. I delete the bad ones in bridge. And develop the ones I want to level 10 jpgs in photoshop. I put those in a JPG folder. Sometimes I put other things in the same folder that I want to keep in there... like client invoices, retouched photos, uprezzed images, web galleries. I try to keep everything together under 1 folder and manage everything through my Mac OS interface... not through software.
My backup routine consists of backing up weekly to two external drives using Prosoft's Data Backup 3. I do a simple copy, not a sync or clone, which only copies new or modified files. If the files get deleted off my computer disk, they get kept on the backup. In this way, I clean my computer disk periodically and retain my backup.
I'm so happy with my backup system and kind of want to retain it, but also use LR. I'm worried that the database will screw up my system of working. But I'm attracted to the easy metadata entry and image search capabilities.
    Any ideas would be appreciated!

  • Same image multiple times in one document

    Hi there,
I'm a software developer, and currently the system I'm working on produces postscript documents for invoices/orders etc. and I'm looking for a way to reduce the size of the postscript file.  One simply way would be to re-use the same image (company logo, for example), rather than specifying it again for every page.
The images are produced using the linux tool ps2pdf - the output is then chopped up so it literally only has the image producing code, and then dumped as-is into the document where the image is required.  What I'd like to do is put this postscript image into a procedure, then call it with the height, width, x and y position whenever I need it.  Doing this will drastically reduce down the PS file from MB sizes to KB sizes.
This is an example of how the documents are currently produced: Postscript multiple images - Pastebin.com
This is an example of what I thought would work, with the image inside a procedure: Postscript multiple images - with procedure - Pastebin.com
(These aren't actually real documents, just an example of how it works!)
Can anyone help me to get the second example working?  Essentially, I copied the image producing code into a procedure, and then I'm trying to call it.  No matter what I try, it doesn't want to play - the error I'm getting in Ghostscript is "/syntaxerror in --%ztokenexec_continue--".  What I can find on the web about this error doesn't help - I'm not particularly experienced with postscript, so please be nice!
    Thanks in advance!
    John

And for why it doesn't work... typical image definitions look like this
    parameters including "currentfile" image
    lines of image data
What happens when this is executed is that the interpreter puts the parameters on the stack, then calls image. Image reads from its source, currentfile, which is exactly the same source used to execute operands and operators. When image has finished, it stops reading currentfile and the interpreter will resume.
Now, when a procedure is defined the input is tokenised, put in an array, and this is saved for later use.
When a procedure is executed, the operands and operators in the array are repeated almost as if they were found in the input. But this is false security, because it breaks down with inline data. If you put the lines above in a procedure, then EACH TIME the procedure is executed it will read from currentfile - and the current position is probably the call to the procedure. In fact, you can define a procedure like the above but leave out the lines of inline data. Include the lines of inline data after each call and it will read the image each time, but this does not help with your aim.
This was very tricky to solve before ReusableStreamDecode, which allows you to turn any section of your input into a file to be used over and over - it becomes currentfile. This was invented for level 3 PostScript.
