Licensing Microsoft OS and Office in Virtual Environment

So I ask this because I haven´t found any decisive solution to my Setup, at least none that I am happy with.
The setup is as follows:
1x Host PC (lets not call it a server ;) ):
Host OS is a Linux Distribution, inside two Windows VM´s are installed with Office (Windows 8.1, Office 2013)
2xClient PC´s:
those could be Thin Clients to, my first thought was to use Linux with rdesktop to connect to the VM´s,
but than I found out about Windows ThinPC which could be used depending on Licence
From what information I could gather the following licences could be applied:
2x  Windows 8.1 Pro Licence with Software Assurance (including 1x VDA Licence through SA)
2x  Office 2013 Standard Licence with Software Assurance (SA only so it is allowed to access Office in the VM´s remotely from the client PC´s)
If I use Windows ThinPC no additional Licences are needed to access the VM´s and Office, from my understanding.
What if I don´t like to use Windows ThinPC?
Is it really that expensive? Those Licences would cost around 1600€ in my country.
Is Windows 8.1 Pro applicable for VDA through SA ?
Microsoft License Advisor does not list this, it does so only if I select Windows 8.1 Enterprise. (But any FAQ I found lists Pro versions as applicable)
If it really is that expensive maybe a solution with 2 PC´s and FPP software would be more appropriate, even so some very nice possibilities will be gone than.
Thanks for reading and I hope for some answers, even partial answers are very welcome.

Hello,
for Microsoft Desktop and application virtualization licensing, you need for each device have Access to Windows Client as VM and to Office 2013 the VDA license Or Windows 8.1 Enterprise with SA + Office 2013 in VL + RDS CALs if you have Access to
Windows and Office through remote Desktop Services on Windows Server.
the retail(FPP) license for Windows it's not recomended for VDI environement. you can use the retail license only  if The physical server on which the virtual desktop is installed is assigned only to one user, and is not shared with
other VDI Desktops

  • SCCM 2012 and App-V Virtual Environment challenges.

    Hi
We are running App-V 5.0 from our SCCM 2012 installation. I have created a App-V Virtual Environment for IE 9 witch includes Silverlight and Java, and i works perfect. However I have experienced a problem every time Java publishes a new java version, were
iE crashes. What is the best/smartest way to add a new Java in App-V Virtual Environment. Can i do it on the fly, or do i have to create a new App-V Virtual Environment, and delete the old one? Can you have 2 different Java versions in the same App-V Virtual
Environment And finally, how long time should it take before newpluggin is registered on the client.
    Br. Per

Personally I prefer to uses layers to build up your image.
    So:
    Layer-0 = Operating System
Layer-1 = Frameworks (.NET Framework, C++, Java, Silverlight, etc)
Layer-2 = Office (Office Suite, Corporate Identity plugins, Lync, etc)
Layer-3 = Locally installed applications users can start (Adobe Reader, 7-zip, etc)
    Layer-4 = Virtual applications (Notepad++, Winmerge, etc)
I place Java in Layer-1. Locally installed and updated by a deployment tool (in your case SCCM). There are some pros and cons about this:
    Pros:
    - Easy to update
    - Less package size
    Con:
    - Every app should be tested when updated
    - Security is reduced because it is locally installed
    So, to answer your questions
What is the best/smartest way to add a new Java in App-V Virtual Environment?
You can add it to the package by using the "Modify an Existing Virtual Application Package" option in the sequencer.
Can you have 2 different Java versions in the same App-V Virtual Environment?
If you use 2 seperate packages, yes. That's the advantage of virtualization.
Some applications support two versions in the same package, you should test this for Java.
How long time should it take before newpluggin is registered on the client?
If you import your new package into SCCM it should take as long as a new package.

  • How many licenses do I need in a Virtual Environment?

Given an 8 core system (box) and I want to create a RAC in a virtualized environment consisting of two vCPUs using Oracle VM:
    Example 1
If my hardware partitioned configuration is:
    [root@ca-ostest256 ~]# xm vcpu-list 50_prod_rdbms2
Name ID VCPU CPU State Time(s) CPU Affinity
    50_prod_rdbms2 26 0 4 -b- 8645.7 any cpu
    50_prod_rdbms2 26 1 4 -b- 9843.6 any cpu
Where 2 virtual CPUs can run on any of the 8 cores, how many Oracle 11g Enterprise licenses do I require?
    Example 2
If my hardware partitioned configuration is:
    [root@ca-ostest256 ~]# xm vcpu-list 50_prod_rdbms2
Name ID VCPU CPU State Time(s) CPU Affinity
    50_prod_rdbms2 26 0 0 -b- 8646.6 0
    50_prod_rdbms2 26 1 0 -b- 9844.3 0
Where 2 virtual CPUs can run only on physical core 0, how many Oracle 11g Enterprise licenses do I require?

You need to license all the physical cores that are currently in use by the product being licensed. You can check the following two documents for more information:

  • Supported Microsoft OS and Office Versions

OK, so IT has been rolling out new PC's with Windows 7 and Excel 2010, and the ability to install and run BPC has been spotty at best. We are currently running BPC 7.0.1, and from what I've heard, Windows 7 is not supported until BPC 7.5.
Does anyone have an official breakout from SAP as to what platforms of Windows and Office are supported for which versions of BPC?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Yes you are right. BPC 7 is not supported on Windows 7. Please take a look at the below link on the product availability matrix:

  • Microsoft Outlook and Office Communicator

Sorry if I am being off message posting a complement of the N900 on this site but I have found that (with permission) I can simultaneously log on to my clients secure web site to view Microsoft Web Outlook, Microsoft Office Communicator & post this message, also while being in a foreign country. The N900 is a serious piece of business kit..

Recover the backup you made before the installation.
If you didn't make a backup, you may have to contact Microsoft and ask if there a way without one to go backwards.
And in the future always backup your data before installing anything.  See my backup FAQ*:

  • Task sequences and App-V Virtual Environment.

We want to distribute a number of applications (including several App-V 5.0 plugins) and packages by using a task sequence. The execution of the task sequence
works fine, however our to App-V virtual groups are not registrated as App Connection Groups in the Microsoft Application Virtualization client. The virtual apps are therefore not working properly, and making the task sequence unusable.
We have distributed the same number of applications, plugins and packages by using software distribution to separate collections and it works without any problems.

First, are you using the Application Model for deploying the App-V 5.0 applications? Application Connection Group comes in place when the Application Deployment Evaluation Cycle is run. That shouldn't have anything to do with the deployment with TS, or atleast
I think so. Have you tried running the App evaluation cycle manually after the TS has run?
"Virtual environments are created or modified on client computers when the application is installed or when clients next evaluate their installed applications. You can order these applications so that when multiple applications try to modify a file system or registry value, the application with the highest order takes priority."

Have you configured the Connection Group in the console?

  • Hi I just purchased a Mac Book Air and installed the 2008 version of Microsoft and office

I purchased a mac book air and installed the 2008 version of Microsoft Home and office.... would i need to purchase the latest version to upgrade
or is it upgradable through a download?

Office for Mac 2011 (or Office 365) are both available as downloads.  Start at mactopia.com.
I would say they are not treated as "upgrades" to Office 2008.  I don't believe there is any pricing discount for previous Office users, nor do I think the download uses any of the Office 2008 version and updates it.  Whichever of the two current Office products you purchase would be considered an entirely new and different product.

  • 11g in virtual environment

    Good day to all,
I have certain questions regarding Oracle 11g working under virtual environment, and any information in this regard is most welcome.
We are planning to migrate multiple existing databases(say 9i, 8i, 10g) on one bigger server with sufficient RAM, CPU and other resources.
We are planning to migrate all the above databases on 11g and use some virtual environment software to install multiple 11g databases on that server.
I think the migration should not be a big issue as we will use simple export and import.
My questions and doubts in this regard are as follows
    (1) Is it practical to run production databases in virtual environment
    (2) Is 11g is mature enough to be used in such environment(or 10g r2 will be better option)
    (3) If one runs multiple databases or instances in virtual environment, how the Kernel setting of one database will effect the other one as I have heard that these virtual software’s( for example VMware) shares some common files for system resource.
    (4) Which OS will be a better option in such scenario(HP UX, SUN Solaris, Windows....)
    (5) If any one is working in such scenario can suggest his or her own experience.
    (6) Any other suggestion will be appreciated.
    Regards
    Ans

    (1) Is it practical to run production databases in virtual environment Yes
    (2) Is 11g is mature enough to be used in such environment(or 10g r2 will be better option) Yes. Infact, there are some really good features of 11g that you may want to consider. Deciding 10g or 11g, depends on the type of databases are in hand. It would be better if you'd do some testing on both environments to come to a better conclusion.
    (3) If one runs multiple databases or instances in virtual environment, how the Kernel setting of one database will effect the other one as I have heard that these virtual software’s( for example VMware) shares some common files for system resource.

    (4) Which OS will be a better option in such scenario(HP UX, SUN Solaris, Windows....) Depends on lot of things. If you use Oracle 11g, you may want to conseder Oracle VM with Oracle Unbreakable Linux/Oracle Enterprise Linux
    Hope it helps.

  • Virtual environment license for sql and other dependencies of sharepoint in Azure

We have Microsoft ActionPack. And we use Sharepoit 2013 from ActionPack , which is installed on our server.
But our on premise server doesn't satisfy the hardware requirement for sharepoint, and thus it is too slow to use.
So we decided to move sharepoint 2013 to Microsoft azure.
But we don't have any idea of virtual environment license for sql and other dependencies of sharepoint in Azure.
Do we have to purchase separate license for sql server and other dependencies.?

    Hi BabeeshC,
Before you deploy SharePoint 2013 on the Azure platform, you must ensure that your Azure virtualization solution meets all the licensing requirements.
Every element of a SharePoint 2013 farm that is installed on Azure virtual machines must comply with the licensing requirements for SharePoint 2013 and related and supporting technologies.
SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server licenses should be purchased separately.

  • Hi, in our Enterprise environment, we have a single mac with Mavericks version 10.9.2 and Office for Mac 14.4.1. When setting up outlook, we are trying to connect to a mailbox on exchange server 2007.

Hi, in our Enterprise environment, we have a single mac with Mavericks version 10.9.2 and Office for Mac 14.4.1. When setting up outlook, we are trying to connect to a mailbox on exchange server 2007. We put in the EWS details in the server field since our autodiscover function is not functioning. But still it doesn't work. There are no errors, no popups. We turned on the logging and in the logs, it says a error of -3259. We are stuck and any help will be really appreciated.

I have a customer experiencing exactly the same issue. Their computer is running Windows 7 Pro with Office 2007 SP3. After seemingly exhausting all troubleshooting options, I backed up their data, formatted the hard drive and performed a clean install of
Windows and all their applications. It didn't solve the problem!
What's strange is the customer also has a laptop computer, running the same version of Outlook, and that doesn't experience any problems connecting to Office 365 on the same network.
My next step is to send the customer a new ADSL modem/router to try.
I have another customer on Office 365, also running Outlook 2007, and they also experience issues with emails sitting in the outbox while Outlook displays the status message “Outlook is trying to retrieve data from the Microsoft exchange server outlook.office365.com.”
In this case Outlook doesn't freeze/stop responding, like it does for the first customer I mentioned.

  • Virtual environment support: microsoft or vmware

Guys, is any virtual environment officially supported for UCM? have any of you tried it?
    Thanks

You have run into the same situation we have.
We had lots of customers on VMWare, and back in the day Stellent told us go ahead, it would be fine. However, now the official response from Oracle support is you will receive a best effort of support. I'm not trying to bash Oracle support here. So far, the best efforts we've received has been pretty good, but we also have a pretty good relationship with some of the support people. Ultimately, they can cut you off though, especially if they can tie the issue to virtualization in any form. Plus, don't forget about the license issue. If you run UCM in a VMWare machine that you've allocated 2 processors to, but the physical box has 12 processors, you have to license all 12 processors. The licensing is based on the physical box, no the hardware allocated to your virtual instance.
We could go on forever about why that is that way, and we have had a slew of calls with Oracle on this matter and it is not changing. We are still on the fence ourselves, but we have recently been recommending people either go with Oracle VM (which is not a terrible choice) or go standalone physical box. Most of our customers hate Oracle VM option because they already have VMWare. Catch 22.

  • Microsoft Query for Office 2013 Home and Business

Where can I get Microsoft Query for Office 2013 Home and Business version?  I have used it for years on my old XP machine with Office 2003.
    Thank you, Sue

    Hi,
You seem got an error like "Microsoft query could not be started because it isn’t installed" when you used it.
It may be not installed yet. We can go to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features\Office 2013 Home and Business\change\Microsoft tools\MS query" and check if it is installed/enabled.
If it is not installed, please use the Install CD/ full installation copy to reinstall it.

Hello mafrerichs and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Simplest way is to use Target Disk mode:
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
and hook to another Mac and use CCC or SuperDuper and clone your HD to another drive.
You could also pull the drive out of your MBP and use an external USB case or SATA - USB dongle to hook it to another Mac.

    Hi Anne,
Did you do this through one of the Office app updates, or did you download it directly from the Microsoft website?
Whichever way you tried it, I would try it the opposite way this time, although simply repeating what you did before may also work.
