Licensing XML Database features

Do we need a separate license to install XML Database feature or it is included with Oracle Database Enterprise Edition 9i?

In general you should address these questions to your oracle sales rep.
However if you are refering to the Oracle XDB feature there is nothing additional to install or licence. If you have a licence for either the current versions of Oracle Database Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition you have the rights to use all of the current Oracle XML DB functionality.

Is XML database separately licensable

Is oracle xml database separately licensable or can we just install it in an existing Enterprise Edition licensed database?

It is just like, for example, APEX a "*no cost option*".
That means that if you pay for the database software (whatever flavor), you are allowed to use it (so for no extra costs=you have paid you fee via buying the database software). From Oracle 11g and onwards its core functionality of the database anyway and (can/) should be installed default.

How to test the XML distribution feature in the report builder

I am working on the publishing report by using the XML distribution feature. Are there anyway I can test it in my report builder before running it on the Report server?

Haven't done this but I'm gonna take a guess.
1. Have the copy row link do the same thing that the edit row does so that your row is displayed on the edit page. However somehow pass another parameter such as a unique request value or something so that the called page can "know" that it was arrived at via the intent of copying a row.
2. In the called page, have a process that detects whatever flag you passed (to know that the user wants to copy a row) and have that process null out the PK item in your page (assuming that your page drives its DML via a PK field and not ROWID). You also might need to alter your button conditions accordingly so that your create button shows (since you will be creating a new record) and your save/apply-changes button (existing records) is hidden.
3. Hopefully this is enough to fool Apex into creating a new record (since the PK is now null) and the user would be now pressing the create button to save changes to the database.
Hope this helps...if it's managed by ROWID though this approach may not work and also if there's any MD5 checksum getting in the way it might not work either but this is the approach I would try first.

As far as I know the Oracle Lite product does not currently support any of the XML features of the Oracle Database. What features were you looking for. Was it just XML storeage and queryiability or was it SQL <--> XML interaction. For a pure XML capability you might want to look at Sleepcat's DB-XML product. It's a programming API that lets you store, index and query XML documents. As you may have seen in the news Oracle recently purchased Sleepcat.

Xml data into non-xml database.. solution anyone?

My current project requires me to store the client's data on our servers. We're using Oracle9i. Daily, I will download the client's data for that day and load it into our database. My problem is that the data file is not a flat file so I can't use sql*loader to load the data. Instead, the data file is an xml file. What is the best way to load xml data into a non-xml database? Are there any tools similar to sql*Loader that will load xml data into non-xml database? Is it the best solution for the client to give me an XML dump of their data to load into our database, or should I request a flat file? My last resort would be to write some sort of a script to parse the xml data into a flat file, and then run it through sql*loader. Is this the best solution? One thing to note is that these files could be very large.

Yes there can be difference and impact there are few features deprecated in SQL Server 2012 you must be aware about that. Please see

After you migrate database to 2012 please don't move ahead with production unless you have tested your application to new created database

XML Database Development with JDeveloper?

Hello, folks:
I am trying to create XML database through JDeveloper.
Database: Oracle 10g
IDE: JDeveloper 11.1.2.2.0
JDBC Driver: Oracle ojdbc6.jar
I connect successfully to the database through JDeveloper. There I see many folders listed, e.g. Tables, Views, Indexes, XML Schemas, XML DB Repository, and others. My problem is that when I try to save a large schema file (that I already validated on my local machine) that is roughly more than 300 lines, then JDeveloper is unable to save the file. It saves only very small files that are about 100 lines or less. The error message simply is: "Unable to save XML Schema blah.filename@local (Error saving XML Schema).
I tried to do it in Oracle SQL Developer too, but got the same error. Can someone please help me understand this problem and how to fix it? Do I need to specify some settings in JDeveloper or SQL Developer? Thanks a lot in advance.

AP XML Payments Feature

Hi,
We are trying to implement the AP XML Payments feature to format and send payment instructions to bank in the Payment Batch generation.
For our requirement, we cannot use this feature without doing a customization.
We need to introduce few more new fields in the transaction map and the payment instructions to be sent to the middleware instead of sending them to the bank directly.
Wanted to understand and get help from people who already worked on this or have knowledge around this.

Thanks for your input. We are not looking at creating custom programs. We wanted to make use of the stanadard XMl Payments program to send payment instructions to 50+ banks from different sites.... We wanted to avoid the 50% format customizations instead use a single standard XML payment program may be by introducing few more fileds... and have only one program... I am looking for help in understanding the Transaction Map feature.

About this XML database

Today I have found these definitions:
1.Native XML Database (NXD):
a) Defines a (logical) model for an XML document -- as opposed to the data in that document -- and stores and retrieves documents according to that model. At a minimum, the model must include elements, attributes, PCDATA, and document order. Examples of such models are the XPath data model, the XML Infoset, and the models implied by the DOM and the events in SAX 1.0.
b) Has an XML document as its fundamental unit of (logical) storage, just as a relational database has a row in a table as its fundamental unit of (logical) storage.
c) Is not required to have any particular underlying physical storage model. For example, it can be built on a relational, hierarchical, or object-oriented database, or use a proprietary storage format such as indexed, compressed files.
2.XML Enabled Database (XEDB) - A database that has an added XML mapping layer provided either by the database vendor or a third party. This mapping layer manages the storage and retrieval of XML data. Data that is mapped into the database is mapped into application specific formats and the original XML meta-data and structure may be lost. Data retrieved as XML is NOT guaranteed to have originated in XML form. Data manipulation may occur via either XML specific technologies(e.g. XPath, XSL-T, DOM or SAX) or other database technologies(e.g. SQL). The fundamental unit of storage in an XEDB is implementation dependent. The XML solutions from Oracle and Microsoft as well as many third party tools fall into this category.
3.Hybrid XML Database (HXD) - A database that can be treated as either a Native XML Database or as an XML Enabled Database depending on the requirements of the application. An example of this would be Ozone.
Which of them would you put XML DB in?

If we consider the duality of the XMLType (store XML documents in CLOB's and structured storage with XML Schemas), could we say that it is an hybrid XML database?

Database feature Derived Table nad performance

WE recently migrated our Data warehouse from DB2 to Oracle Exadata. Since the migration, i have noticed that some of the reports have becone extremely slow. e.g the report was runnign for 7 secs before is now running for over 6 minutes. In the database feature tab of the physical layer for the database connection, I have the database feature Derived Table turned on. If I turn this setting off, the same report runs in 3 secs. The Derived Table is supposed to help with the performance of the reports. but in this case it seems like it is hurting the performance than helping.
Should this setting be turned off? What are the side effects of turning this off? We can not do a full testing by changing this setting so i want to reach out to someone who had run into similar issues and what they did to remedy.

So the answer is "yes" but not quite in the way you might expect.
You have created the object where you can "borrow" the LOV for your derived table prompt. What you need to do is this. First, you need to create another object in your universe (I put it in the same class as the "code" object) that contains your object description. Then do this:
1. Double-click on the code object
2. Select the properties tab
3. Click on the Edit button. This does not edit the object definition itself, it edits the LOV definition.
4. On the query panel, add the Description object created earlier. Make sure it is the second object in the query panel.
5. You can opt to sort either by code or description, whichever makes sense to your users
6. Click "OK" to save the query definition, or click "Run" if you want to populate the LOV with values.
7. Make sure you click "Export with Universe" on the properties tab once you have customized the LOV, else your computer is the only one that will include the new LOV definition
8. The Hierarchical Display box may also be checked; for this case you have a code + description which are not hierarchical, so clear that box
That's it. When you export your universe, the LOV will go with it. When someone asks for a list of values for the code, the list will show both codes and descriptions, but only the code will be selected.
You do not need to make any changes to your current derived table prompt once the LOV has been customized.

XML database not loading

I have a xml database that has some information which is loaded into a drop down menu on my form. While I am in Live Cycle Designer and use the pdf preview, the dropdowns populate correctly and show what is in the database but when I open up the form in Adobe Reader, the dropdown show null. How can I remedy this problem?

You can use the importXFA() method to import data via scripting.

You'll have to call it from a privileged context like the console window or a folder level script.

XML database query through Java

Hi all.
I am collecting information about a little application i am trying to build:
I have an XML database with records divided in a lot of subdirectory (with three or four .xml files);
directories' names are defined by date in format "yyyymmdd",
the file within are "date_something.xml":
what is the best way to access it by a web app or a java class to search all the dirs adn print results in a readable way (aka not in cmd) ? I need first to define a period of time to search and then some attribute or node to print referred to some element.
I was guessing to use xpath, anyway I ve tryed JSP but it is too difficult and the query i have to do are really simple to build a full servlet.
I am learning xalan through servlet and I think in future this will be my choice but now i need to collect the data by queries without any automation, just to have results for researching and paper writing.
The main problem I found is to search a full series of directory, with transformations i can find out stuff from a single file, but how to do it for a system of directories?
Any suggestion or link to resource would be good also.

Yes, I basically meant a class. Before querying the XML file you need something that will retrieve its location. If it's by date you could probably concoct something that takes a Date object and returns a set of File objects. Internally it would traverse the directory trees and find the proper XML file(s).

JSPs are just Java Server Pages, which get dynamically compiled into servlets. If you are following the MVC pattern for servlets/JSP (which you should), JSPs represent your views while servlets are the controllers. The model would be your XML data in this case. XPath is a way to get at that data. If it was in an XND, you could just throw an XQuery/XPath expression at the database and it would give you back XML documents/fragments representing the results of your query. You don't have to make your own system to find the XML documents. Of course, you do have to learn how to use an XND.
Perhaps you should separate what you are trying to do. You have two problems: 1) how to get the XML data you need. 2) How to present it. You should separate those two completely and learn how to do both before attempting to put it together.
