Light Ambient vs Directional

Hi,
does anyone has an idea why my geometry is not reflecting directional light .
Yes, I did put the normals and the material.
I clearly see that there is an effect with ambient light but not with directionnal.
WHY, I"M BECOMING CRAZY!

  • White flare/stripe on photos from direct light source

I have a problem very similar to this https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z3-Z3-Dual/White-stripe-on-photos/td-p/909906 but i am not using flash. White stripe only shows when light is coming direct to camera from a light source like fluorecent lamp and from a particular angle.
Stripe shows in both portrait and landscape mode and always at same place. I am attaching 2 photos 1 taken in landscape and other in portrait.
I have a protecting cover but it is not covering the camera lens.
I think other z3 devices do not have this issue as i have searched a lot but i only found 1 other person facing this issue and i have shared the link above.
Can i know why this stripe shows on photos? Is it a known issue? Should i claim warranty?

  • Does some of you see little squares on his ipad3 screen, when bright light shines directly on the display?! Is this normal?

    Hey folks,
I just got my iPad 3, and when the display is almost white like on the google homepage i noticed there were small squares or a grid visible all over the screen (when a light is shinning directly on the screen). I just want to know if it is just on my device or some of you also have experienced the same. If you cannot see the grid just tilt the ipad a bit when you are on a white background (as it is most visible on a white background). In addition I recognized that my ipad has a much "warmer" colour setting than my colleague's one. His one is "whiter" or "colder".
For any ideas, experiences, suggestion: thanks in advances!

Look like the plastic molding process is not perfect in your top shell surface, or some component might attach to that area that make the layer that block the light from lcd is not covering those area.
I don't have my MacBook with me so I cannot give you any idea or comparison, hope somebody will post either they have same issue or they inform you that they dont have any of that.
Just discuss this with you apple store or apple dealer if you feel this is annoyed, bring your picture along with your MacBook and even better print this thread so they now you are serious and not faking it.
Actually it is kinda cool when you drew up small layout of the spot, it makes your MacBook one of a kind. If you post this thread on 6/6/06, it might give me goose bump, just kidding.

  • Shoot direct to QuickTime Pro vs. typical DV tape and capture

I own and run a harmonica instruction website. I'm going to add instructional video to the mostly text based lessons on the site. I have a Canon GL1, G5 Dual 2.3, FCP, and I'm shooting with an 3 point lighting setup in my office/studio.
I can turn the camera on, setup the lights, and record direct to QuickTime Pro in it's Device Native mode. Will the quality ultimately be the same as if I record to a DV tape and then capture to FCP? It's certainly faster going direct to QT PRO, but I do have a built-in tape backup system by recording first with the GL1 and I don't want to sacrifice quality if that's the case.
    Thanks for your help,
    Dave Gage
    http://www.harmonicalessons.com

I have an XL1s and have been forced to use the direct capture via QTpro (due to a broken tape mechanism) and I must say, it works great. It captures as DV - same quality as going to tape; however once it is done recording, you must export as a dv stream in order to get the file to be recognized by FCP. I have yet to see any difference between this method and capturing to tape, but then again, I have no choice. If you have the extra hard disk space to spare, I recommend avoiding tape, but it's up to you.
By the way, does anyone know why FCP doesn't recognize the raw capture files? It uses the DV codec to capture in QT, so why does it not work?

  • 3d painting issue - why is my selected value showing up different then the actual color I'm picking?

Love the CS5's 3d painting features but I'm running into a really frustrating issue:
When I select a value from the 3d object and try to paint with that value, it's showing up as a different value altogether (the image hopefully illustrates this much better than words).
Not sure if it's got something to do the the lights setup or something else but I cannot figure it out.  Anyone else running into this or have a solution?
    Thanks!!!

Ok, let me try to be explain the issue in more detail.
    Note:
All 3D layer settings are default.  No lights, ambient color setting, etc have been tweaked.
    Description:
In order to paint out texture seams on a 3d character model, I have imported an .obj of the model into PS CS5 and applied a texture map to it which I have previously painted.
Using the eye dropper I have selected a color value from the sides of the seam and have attempted to paint that value over the seam to remove it.
    Results:
The color value picked from a texture applied to a 3d model which is 161,161,173, is not the same color value when painted directly back onto the model. It has now mysteriously turned into 152,152,177.
    Expected results:
When a color value is picked from a texture applied to a 3d model (161,161,173) and painted back onto the textured model it should remain exactly the same (161,161,173)
I hope lighting/shading is not figured in when color picking.  That would make your results completely unpredictable.  It could possibly be what is happening but is there a way turn this off or work around it?
    Thanks for the help.

  • How do I make a model in 3D World darker as another models

    Hi
I have 2 models in my 3D world, created out of the same
    modelresource, they
lay on one line and on the same distance from light.
Can I make one of this models darker or lighter as another
    withound chaging
    the light position?
I would like realise something like highlight and disable
    functions for
    specific model in a world.
    Any answer will be appreciated
    Thank you in advance
    Orest

Changing the relative position of the light will only have an
effect if you are using #point or #spot lights. These are
computationally more expensive than #ambient and #directional
lights, so it is better to avoid #point and #spot lights if
    possible.
You can adjust how the shader(s) on the model react to light,
by changing the colours associated with the .ambient, .diffuse,
.specular and .emissive properties af the shader.

  • Recommended tools in Aperture for reducing or removing over exposed parts of a photo?

Certain photos ( in raw) of paintings contain areas that are greatly overexposed due to the inappropriate use of a flash for a very reflective surface. I'd like to try to reduce those very white and bright areas as much as possible, hopefully reaching the darker colors (organce /red ) and texture below.  Any suggestions?

    Good morning, Kirby,
you are a perfect partner to force me to clarify my posts - thank you for that. But I think your summary highlights the main points I wanted to make.
From your response it seems that there is a difference in type, and not just intensity, between these two kinds of light (let's call them, until I learn more, ambient and reflected)
The important difference between the flashlight and the ambient light is the direction with respect to the orientation of the surface.
Ambient light: the background light coming from no particular direction (usually scattered and reflected by all other objects or the light from the sky). Ambient light is usually soft and does not cast any noticable shadows since it is coming from all directions uniformally.
Directional light: Light coming only from one direction, e.g. flashlight or spotlight, a hard light, causing sharp shadows.
If you have a dull surface, then a ray of light hitting the surface will be absorbed partially by the pigments in the surface. The other part will be scattered (in more or less all directions) and this part will have a different color than the incident light. E.g., if white light hits a surface that absorbs blue, the scattered light will appear to be yellow (the complementary color to blue). The surface will look yellow from all directions - the surface luminance is isotropic (This is called Lambertian reflectance). Typically unpolished wood, soil, or paper, show this behaviour.
If you have a shiny surface (i.e. any roughness is smaller than the wavelength of the visible light) then no absorption will take place - all light will be reflected without interaction with the surface, and it will be reflected into the direction of total reflection (exactly like a mirror, angle of incidence = angle of reflection). This is called specular reflectance.
Since no apsorption takes place, this reflected light exactly has the color of the incoming light and shows no traces of the color of the object surface.
Most surfaces can be described by a mixture of shiny and dull (specular reflectance and Lambertian reflectance): They will reflect a part of the incoming light like a mirror (thereby reflecting the color of the lightsource) and absorb and scatter the other part of the light in the body color like a Lambertian surface. In the example above (ray traced with PovRay) you see the colored body reflection on most parts of the surface and tiny specular light in white with faintly colored, unsaturated rings around them. The specular reflections show the color of the light source - the little hue is due to a residue of ambient light (10%) - so you see a little of the body color even in the highlights.
The problem with taking a photo of a shiny painting is that the painting is planar, and so the areas of specular reflection will be huge, not just tiny spots like on a curved surface. If you illuminate the painting only with directional light (spotlight or flash), then you will see only the specular reflection if your camera is looking onto the surface in the angle of total reflection and nearly everything will be white; only the residue of ambient light will be reflected uniformly and add a little color. The areas of the image that you see outside the angle of total reflection will be very dark, only illuminated by the ambient light.
    Cheers

  • Macbook Pro Brightness Setting

Long time listener, first time caller-
New apeture user here wondering if there is a proper, or exact, monitor brightness setting on my macbook pro I should be using when viewing and adjusting images?
    Thanks,

    Adding to Frank's reply:
The only way to get consistent color is to use a hardware calibrator.
Even with hardware calibration, the MBP screens are not good enough for exacting color work.
If you use a hardware calibrator, you must turn off "→System Preferences→Displays→Display→Automatically adjust brightness ... ".  I recommend Aperture users turn this off even without hardware calibration.
    Also turn off "→System Preferences→Energy Saver→Battery→Slightly dim the display ... ".
If you want to match display and printer outputs, calibrate the monitor brightness to 100 cd/m^2 or less.  I use 85, as that gives me the best match with my printer (Epson 3880), my studio, and my eyes.
The environment in which you edit your images is probably as important as your monitor.  Things to be aware of are: overall luminance, glare, color of ambient light, intrusion of direct light, contrast between display and surround.
Aperture allows you to set the background luminance of the Browser and the Viewer.  Set them to 18% unless you have reason to do otherwise.  "Aperture→Preferences→Appearance→Viewer {Browser} Brightness".
There are many sources on the Web -- search for "color calibration OS X" or "Color calibrated workflow" -- but no one place that I know of that spells it out.
The quick answer -- now that you've got this far  -- is set the brightness to something that appears gray rather than light.  This is probably close to the middle of the available range, and two or three steps lower than you might chose for comfortable viewing.  Implicit in that is that what is best for editing photos is often different from what is best for doing other work on a computer.

  • Lock Screen lag.

Since the Portico update, I've noticed a delay (about 1 sec) between pressing the power button and the screen actually turning on. I've pinned the culprit down to Automatic Brightness, but turning it off also seems to disable the sunlight overboost which I've found handy. Already tried the "power on in dark place" trick just in case, didn't work. Anyone got any ideas?

Forgot to mention, have tried an experiment whereby the ambient light sensor was directly in front of a strong light source to fool it into thinking it was a sunlight situation. Noticed wallpaper actually (barely) appeared immediately at very low screen brightness if the button was pressed, with there being the 1sec delay before it started boosting to maximum brightness.

  • Multi-line JTextPane: My SSCCE works, but not my reg. code . [LONG, sorry.]

So, I'm trying to code this flash cards program, and it's not working. The problem is that, when I change the text of the JTextPane to have multiple lines, the text disappears, and my JTextPane acts like it's empty. I included my SSCCE as a comparison, because it works just fine. I hope you guys don't mind that I included all of the code for my Cards program, even the stuff that I know isn't relevant, but I'm at a loss, and it's bedtime, so I'm done editing for the night. If you guys can fix my code, feel free to use it for your own personal use (as a reward for having to deal with the irrelevant stuff). How do I get my text to appear when it has multiple lines?
PS I know my button listeners aren't like they should be. I'm going to fix them after I fix the JTextPane.
PPS If this breaks anyone's browser, I'm sorry, but I included a file that is format-dependent, so I had to include it as is. Also, I had to include tabs and not spaces because of the length limit.

Anyway, this can be locked too, I guess. I have an idea on how to find what's wrong.

  • Samsung 40" 3D tv goes blank 1to 2 seconds

I purchased a new Samsung 40" 3D tv at Christmas time and the TV will go blank 1 to 2 seconds picture and audio from one to 10 times a day there is many people that say they have the same problem have tried all kinds of inputs it doesn't matter if you're using a cable box or a game station or a DVD. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone else know how to fix it the repair shop said they do not know what to do at this time.

Page 62 of the manual.  Assuming you've followed all of those steps, turn off the automatic shut-off under the menu options, turn off all eco solutions that shut the tv off if no signal or movement is detected, and shut off anynet; all under the menut options.  Next, on your cable or satellite box turn off all the automatic shut-off options, sleep timers, etc. in the menus.  Same goes for the other sources you are using, blu-ray ps3, etc.  Make sure front touch panel is clean and free of dust, finger oils, etc.  Lastly, make sure light is not directly shinning onto the bottom of the front touch panel and that nothing is brushing against it.  Usually, these issues arise because of HDMI protocols (Samsung calls it AnyNet) which turn the tv off or on when something else is switched on or off.  It is supposed to simplify things but usually confuses people more so I recomment just turning AnyNet off on the tv and blu-ray player (assuming you have a Samsung).  If your cable or satellite has these protocols turn them off too. Otherwise, if the tv is on already and then you turn the sat. or cable box on, it will turn the tv off and vice versa.  They must be in sync for the HDMI protocols to work correctly so I just shut them off under the menu options.  Hope this helps.

  • 3D Problems in AE CS3 Mac OSX 10.5

I am having a lot of trouble with 3D in After Effects. I cannot get my layers to be 3D, even when I have the 3D option checked on in the timeline. For instance, I'm trying to create a rotating Earth, but instead of it rotating and being a sphere, it's just a flat layer that twists. I don't know what to do. I can't find any good info about this type of thing.
Also, I don't have a 3D axis (you know--the three-dimensional X,Y,Z axis). I don't know if it's my video card or the program itself. I don't know what to do and I'm getting close to scrapping the whole program and trying to find a version for Mac online.
    Can anyone help?

You can do a rotating sphere using any one of several 3rd party apps. To create the effect using the built in effects take an image you want to use for the
globe surface and apply the CC Sphere Effect. You'll find that under Effects>Perspective>CCSphere.
Apply the CC Sphere to the layer, make the layer 3D, change the Transform properties to Auto Orient towards Camera, then apply the followint expressions:
    To CC Sphere X rotation:
    r = lookAt(position, thisComp.layer("Camera 1").transform.position);
    x = r[0] - 180;
    value + x
    To CC Sphere Y rotation:
    r = lookAt(position, thisComp.layer("Camera 1").transform.position);
    y = - r[1];
    value + y
    To CC Sphere Z rotation:
    r = lookAt(position, thisComp.layer("Camera 1").transform.position);
    z = r[2] +180;
    value + z
If you really want to get fancy you can add expressions to light height and direction using a variation of the basic lookAt(position1, position2) language.
Hope this helps. You might want to take a look at
this sample project using one of the images picked from the google link above.

  • Final Cut Pro losing filters?

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro from Tiger to Leopard. I was running Final Cut Pro 5.1 academic. Before I upgraded, I was in the process of editing a video. Parts of the video used the filters "Light Rays" and "Directional Blur." When I go to work on the video now, it tells me that it is unable to load "Light Rays" and "Directional Blur." When I checked for them in the effects tab, they are not there. It won't let me render anything until they are reinstalled. What do I do? Thanks!

    Mr. Amazing,
If you've not gathered yet, it helps amazingly so to be very accurate and concise both in vernacular and actions. If you've not gathered, updating is nothing like a fresh installation: words simply cannot be bandied about if you expect prompt, accurate and concise help. It took how many posts to get to this part? Mr. S. is very knowledgeable and his patience, although deeper than mine, does have boundaries, amazingly enough.
There's another amazing feature of the forum and that is the little used and very hidden Search function. There it is, in the upper right hand corner of this page. It can be very useful and a great boon, provided it's used.
The most amazing aspect of this forum, however, is the boundless patience of it's users and readers for your query has been asked and answered, no matter what it is, probably a thousand times before. In your case, Mr. S. provided an answer to your problem very early in the thread, I would advise rereading it and taking his advice to heart.
    Z.
