LIghtening Strikes

I have a NetGear router and two computers (both on 10.4) and an HP Photosmart 5180 in my home network. Lightening struck last Friday and killed the cable modem and its power supply. Everything is back to normal except one computer cannot access the router. I think it is a cable problem. The NetGear router does not recognize the cable regarless of which position I plug into. When I put the working computer (tower G4) into the router position #2 (which was where the non-working computer was plugged in when the strike occurred), the router has intermittent lights on both the upper and lower lights. As contrasted to the other positions, where the upper light stays steady and the lower light blinks. I feel the cable is shot, but also think that position on the router is not working correctly. Anyone have any experience with this? And how to determine if the cable is working, without removing it. It is located one floor up and is a pain to take down. Any suggestions appreciated.

Wow...just, ummmm, wow! At least you've got a catchy topic for your post!
To test the cable, since you have two macs, you can try to directly connect them using the ethernet cable, as follows (copied from "Connecting two computers using Ethernet" in Mac Help):
1. Connect an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port of one computer to the Ethernet port on the other.
2. Open Sharing preferences on both computers and turn on Personal File Sharing. Note the Computer Name for the computers.
3. On one of the computers, choose Go > Connect To Server and then click Browse.
4. Double-click the other computer in the window and enter your password, if necessary.
If that works, your cable is fine.
Hope this helps...

  • Lightening strike "fried" all components. What effect on Mac?

I had lightening strike a tree & bounce over to my Chimney on St. Paddy's day, evening. It "fried" all of my computer components & Comcast boxes & more. Can you give me a list of all of the problems that that could have caused to my Macbook? (Most say, if it is not black or does NOT turn on, then it could be "hardware issue" related to LIGHTENING STRIKE. And they say that all the problems that I have been having are "software issues" & NOT related to the lightening.
IF ANYONE CAN GIVE ME VALIDATION THAT THE LIGHTENING STRIKE CAUSED DAMAGE TO MY MAC, THE INSURANCE COMPANY WILL BUY ME A NEW ONE! (Of course, I will need to know who to go to to get this VALIDATED.)
I hope that someone is creative enough or has had this experience to know that it CAN happen. I need all the help that I can get!

I am still LOST in that one... Nothing that I have tried has changed anything.
Thank you all for being so patient with someone who doesn't really know & understand the technical side of Macs. I do well to get this "bloody" Mac to work, since I got it.

    Ralph L1,
    Thank you for your response.
Lightning strikes can cause a myriad of problems that may or may not include total destruction of electronic components.  Surge protectors may help, but do not always help with lightning strikes as the induced voltage and duration of the surge may not allow the surge protector time to trip.
I have learned that surge protectors do NOT protect from lightening strikes! Only electrical surges. There used to be one compay & our Electrical Company, NES, who sold actual Lightening Protection Devices. NES no longer provides those, so nothing will protect against an electrical strike.
I was also told that while most of one's components can be "fried", that computers have a built in protection that must be pretty powerful to have NOT damaged my Macbook with the lightening strike.
You don't say why the chimney damage is relevant...was there an electrical, cable, dish antenna associated with the chimney?
No, it was St. Paddy's evening, March 17. I was gone for 2 hours & came home & had no electricity. I hit the breakers & all came back on, but my TV & computer. I called out NES & they saw some "burn" in the internal box outside. It took me several days to realize what had happened. I went to put something in my storage building which is attached to the house & happened to look up & 2/3 of my chimney was gone. First thinking wind or tree branch?? Then, I started finding pieces of brick & mortar on the side of the house where I would have been parking & then in the back yard & finally at least 150 ft back in the yard & knew that no wind could have done that. Finally, one guy said that my chimney had been struck by lightening. And then another saw exactly what had happened. Lightening hit the top of a sweet gum tree outside of my fence, came down to a knot & a V in the trunk & bounced over to my chimney & went down the chimney & through my electrical system in the lower level of my house. Clearly, my Vonage box was "fried", as was my modem, router, TV cable box, phones, & many other electrical components.
So, I was hoping that SOMEONE reading here might just have experienced a lightening strike that DID DAMAGE THEIR MAC & COULD TELL ME WHAT TO DO TO SUPPORT THAT, as the insurance company would buy me a new one.
Yes, I have been having issues with my Macbook, thanks to NO help from Apple after paying to 3 years coverage & being on the phone with them for hours at a time & months at a time. I had an "issue" that happened about 1 year into my warranty & they did NOT fix it. The "genius" was rude & put >8,000 files in ONE folder, for ME to deal with. Lost all of my folders, albums, grouped items & it is still a mess.
I plan to write the HEAD of Apple when I get other issues in my life resolved, even if it is way past the "coverage date". You have no idea what I have gone through & the displeasure that I have had out of this Macbook because of them. I suffer from a debilitating disease that keeps me from getting things done in a timely manner & right now I am overwhelmed & pretty much "immobilized". I have been on disabiltiy since 1993, spent most of my life savings as a professional single woman, so I have no money to get a nearly 4 year old Mac repaired that should have been "fixed" while under warranty!!
However, each time I use my Mac, something else happens... the "spinning ball of death" is about to make me throw this "bloody thing" across the room. Now, my Time Machine is "missing". My MyBook external HD is NOT working. I am told that several other parts of my Operating System are missing, e.g. the Launch Agent, whatever that is & I have no idea what else & that my Mac IS damaged. I was told that I needed to Re-Install my OS, which would be fine, IF my Time Machine & External HD that was saving all of my back-ups were working.
Then I stupidly... ignorantly installed MacKeeper & everyone says that needs to be UN-INSTALLED ASAP, but with all the issues that I am having, & the "how to UN-INSTALL, NOT using MacKeeper...", I cannot understand it. I have tried & one person has been trying to help me to no avail. I am "terrified" of losing all of my information & of my Macbook finally dying, due to stupid things.
Please have a look at the posts on my case about that & if you can help me, I would be very grateful.

  • Re-downloading after lightening strike

How can I get my purchased library to re-download after a lightening strike destroyed my computer?

    Where is your back up?
If for some reason you have failed to back up your music, you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod.
    File>Transfer Purchases
From the itunes store terms of service:
". PRODUCTS CAN ONLY BE DOWNLOADED ONCE; AFTER BEING DOWNLOADED, THEY CANNOT BE REPLACED IF LOST FOR ANY REASON. YOU SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BACKING UP YOUR OWN SYSTEM"
You can try e-mailing itunes customer support to see if they will make an exception.

  • Battery sign with lightening strike across it?

Hi my ipod has stopped working. The Apple sign comes up when I reset it, then the Apple sad face comes up, then a large animation of a battery sign comes up with a lightening strike through it.

That icon means the battery is charging:

  • Lightening strike tripped circuit breaker, iMac still works perfectly except I cannot access internet, all external cables etc proved Ok. any suggestions to get me back online?

We had a lightening strike that tripped the circuit breaker - does my iMac now need repairing?  Everything works on it except I cannot access the internet via the ethernet cable. I have checked the router and cable and both work on other pc's.

If you connect to the router via the Ethernet port at the time of the strike it is possible it is damaged.
Can you connect to your other computers via the Ethernet port on your router, if so the port will be good and it may be just a software setup you need to go through.
Try Pauls suggestions first if they don't fix it and you need a new logic board you could try a USB to Ethernet adapter, it would probably be a lot cheaper that replacing the logic board.
If you have home insurance would that cover the cost of repairs?
Apple Ethernet to USB, it states MacBook Air, but I think they work with other Macs.

  • Lightening strike killed Ethernet connection and more?

Lightening killed my ethernet connection. I saw a post that said a 3rd party replacement board would do. I installed it (Sonnet's Presto Gigabit 10/100/1000 PCI) and I still don't have a connection. Internet provider's modem talks and my Mac 10.4.2 sees the new board but no connection. Reloaded OS to not avail. Everything else works fine. Any advice?

I too read the various reports on xlr8yourmac about the NetGear GA311. My husband had purchased this card to try in my son's PC that had lost its NIC card in the lightning storm as well. It didn't solve the problem on that machine. I found another post on Amazon by a reviewer who said he is an Apple Certified System Administrator. His report was that the GA311 should work in Tiger 10.4 and later without a driver.
I've now tried the card in my G4 Sawtooth, similarly impaired by the storm, and after multiple, varied attempts to set it up with the Network preferences am unsuccessful. Network preferences recognized that the device was in the PCI slot and attempted to set it up. It just can't seem to complete the task.
Now I'm wondering if there may be some other related damage on the machine that would affect its ability to connect to the Internet. Does anyone have any ideas about that? What other components are part of that capability on the G4? Can I try replacing an additional component while also replacing the card?
Thanks for reading this post and sharing your feedback! I really want to get my wonderful G4 fully operational again. I have my new MacPro up and running now and its wonderful, but it won't run the majority of my Classic compatible software, like QuarkXpress 5, Flash 5, etc. I would like to continue having access to those programs.

  • Lightening Strike - restart stuck on white screen (with logo)

Power just went out and now our iMac ('11) wont restart.  When I power on, the start up sound plays and then a white screen with the apple and an spinning circle underneath.  After 10 mins, I shut it down and tried again.  Any ideas?

    ChipandTaz wrote:
dumb question but what I looking for?  I did it and then got a screen of stuff and then a prompt.  When I typed "exit" to boot system, it locked up.
I think it was hanging anyhow wasn't it.  The idea behind the verbose was to see what was going on in the boot proccess just prior to it hanging.  What was it doing?  I assume not a fsck since that would be a disk check (like Disk Utility repair) and that migh take longer.

  • Error while trying to do a hard reset on Lumia 625

    Can anyone help please?
Whilst attempting a hard reset as shown on YouTube, I have clearly used the wrong order, and my phone is now locked with a 'Jagged Lightening Strike' set over a cog wheel, and it is proving immpossible to get the phone back to any working state.
As this phone uses a sealed battery, removal of the internal battery is not an option?
    Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

first try a soft reset like tiny_chef stated:
    Soft Reset-
Hold Vol- & Pwr until the device shuts down
When the device vibrates and starts to reboot, release ONLY Pwr button, still holding the Vol-
When you see the (!) on your screen, then release the Vol- button and wait until the device boots.
Your device is now soft reset
that should force your device to reboot and wake correctly.
then, do the hard reset like this:
Hard Reset- (THIS COMPLETELY ERASES ALL DATA ON THE PHONE, BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST)
Hold Vol- & Pwr until the device shuts down
When the device vibrates and starts to reboot, release ONLY Pwr button, still holding the Vol-
When you see the (!) on your screen, then release the Vol- button
Immediately, in sequence, tap Vol+, Vol-, Pwr, Vol-
The device will show gears and begin wiping the device to a factory restored version.
    Device will reboot.
Your device is now hard reset

  • Slow Broadband Speed Compared to Windows PC on Same Network

I have 3 computers in my office connected to a cable modem with a maximum download speed of 5mbps. My cable modem is connected to an Airport Extreme base station with the latest firmware. Two computers access the internet using Airport. One is my G4 PowerBook and the other is an new IBM ThinkPad. The third computer is an older Bondi Blue iMac that's connected to the Airport through the Ethernet port.
When I do speed tests on either Mac, I get results that are almost half of the speed I'm seeing on the Windows PC. This is true for most of the speed test sites I try. My favorite site is Speakeasy so I can try different servers. On that site, both Macs show speeds around 1600 kbps while the PC shows speeds at 3400 or better. These computers are sitting side by side and getting full signal from the Airport. The iMac directly connected also shows speeds around 1600.
The PowerBook is running 10.4.3 while the iMac is running Panther.
I'm stumped because it can't be the Airport base station because it connects just fine to the PC. It can't be Tiger because the iMac is running Panther. It seems like it must be some setting somewhere in the OS. I did try installing Broadband Tuner but it had no effect so I uninstalled it. I've also tried installing the network modifications that were posted in one of the threads and that didn't do anything either.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Michael,
Thanks again for your suggestions and offer to help. At this point, I think I'm throwing in the towel. I took my PowerBook to my other home which has internet service through a different ISP and uses a different cable modem. Without doing a thing, my computer connected to my Airport network there and was immediately running at speeds above 5,000 kbps. I think that pretty clearly demonstrates it's not a setting on my Mac but instead a problem with the cable service, modem or something in the infrastructure. Unfortunately, since the technicians get decent results on their Windows test machine, any results I find on my Mac are meaningless to them and they don't feel a real problem exists.
I've done many different tweaks and tests on my computer and on the Windows machine and the results are inconsistent. I can never get over 1,700 kbps on my Mac doing the speed tests and on the Windows machine, even downloading files off my ISP's local server is sometimes slow at about 260 KB/s although it regularly gets in the 4,000's on the internet speed tests. At my other home, I'm on a totally different ISP's network and can download the other ISP's local file at over 600 KB/s so something is just not right.
At the end of the day, I think my only option is to switch to DSL service. My local phone company is offering a 6 MB service with 512 upload speed for just slightly more than my cable 5 MB 384 up service. Because I can't pinpoint my cable modem service problems to any of my own hardware, I don't believe I'll have any luck pursuing this further with the cable company. I can only guess that something upstream was damaged during a recent lightening strike that hit my home and knocked out all my networking equipment including the cable modem, spliters and filters. Since all of that has been replaced, I can only guess that something further upstream was also damaged and they just haven't been able to pinpoint the problem.
Thanks again for your assistance. I really wish we could have figured it out.

  • HT3275 TIME MACHINE GONE... EARLIER, OTHER OS APPS NOT THERE, DAMAGED MAC from what??

MAC: OS 10.5.8, LEOPARD, Purchased in November, 2008. One year later, MAJOR ISSUE OCCURRED! SEE FOLLOWING DETAILED DESCRIPTION.
MAJOR QUESTIONS ARE AT THE BOTTOM! (Included volumes of information, as without it, I don't think anyone could even begin to help me. APPLE COULDN'T AFTER ~2 YEARS!)
"Damaged" Mac, (from what?) OS Apps gone, NOW Time Machine GONE, can't save info fr Mac to Re-Load OS. TRIED the page on how to repair/fix to no avail. I bought my Mac in November of 2008 & paid for Apple Care for 3 years & paid for 1 year of classes. About 1 year after purchase, & nearly one year of classes, I had NOT been told to trash my downloads, but had been told that I would NEVER lose anything, to not be afraid to try things. However, after checking at least 6 times to make sure that the things that I had SAVED, did not go away when "trashed" from downloads, I set my Mac to send all downloads to trash, believing, based on my testing & what I had been told by APPLE, that IF pics, pages, documents, folders, albums, etc had been SAVED, that when sending the same downloads to trash, I would NOT lose any of them. And that they would remain in folders & albums & such.
I walked away from my Mac as I had many downloads, but had happened to leave my iPhoto open & when I passed by I saw that nearly ALL my pics were being DELETED TO TRASH!!! It was the middle of the night, so there was no one to help me. The only option that I had was to BRING BACK ALL 8,000+ FILES TO MY DESKTOP, WHICH of course, STOPPED MY MAC from FUNCTIONING.
I called Apple Care when the next day & they set me up for an hour appointment with the "GENIUSES", who only take 15 minute appointments.. The "GENIUS" was rude... Said, “I have already spent 10 minutes on you!” "What do you want me to do?" I said, "I want all my folders, pics, documents back... AND I want to know what happened?? As I checked 6X to make sure this would NOT happen."
He took my Mac to the back & PUT ALL THE FILES IN ONE FOLDER, AS IF THAT WOULD HELP ME. NO ONE HAD ANY IDEA AS TO WHAT I COULD DO or WHAT HAD HAPPENED, BUT TO DEAL WITH EACH FILE INDIVIDUALLY & PUT IN FOLDERS OR ALBUMS OR WHATEVER. (And YES, I AM YELLING... not at you people, but at APPLE & THE **** I HAVE GONE THROUGH THE PAST NEARLY 3 YEARS!)
They "didn't know" & said that "you must have done something wrong"... "WHAT"???, I asked repeatedly & got the same answer, "I don't know, you must have done something wrong" THEY ARE THE GENIUSES! SURELY ONE OF THEM COULD FIGURE OUT WHAT WENT WRONG???  I was toward the end of my classes & was desperately seeking help for this "mess", instead of learning more about Macs... & that was a total waste of time. I NO LONGER HAD FOLDERS, ALBUMS OR ANYTHING BUT >8,000+ SINGLE FILES TO DEAL WITH MYSELF!!
I spent months & many hours over the next 2 years  talking with Apple Care on the phone to NO AVAIL. I would get the "newbies", even when I asked for the "supervisors" or the "specialists" because they were inundated with calls & would transfer to agents who knew only the very basics & after 45-60 minutes, they would tell me that I needed to talk with a "specialist". DUH!!
Toward the latter months, they finally decided that I needed to talk with several "SPECIALISTS" for whom I would have to call & then they would call me back. For a while, they were good about that, not that anything was resolved, then all of a sudden, NO CALLS BACK FROM TWO OF THEM... nothing more was being done for me even though I was still under APPLE CARE!
NO ONE ELSE FROM APPLE could ever tell me just what might have happened, UNTIL MAYBE TOWARD THE END OF MY COVERAGE, BUT THEN they were NOT SURE & the damage had been done for nearly 2 years & I was within 2 months of the end of my contract when I had to have bilateral eye surgery, so I was no longer able to SEE to even deal with Apple Care.
A few weeks back, I thought I would try MacKeeper for a trial... & after getting the "free scan & PARTIAL fix", I "online chatted" with an agent & found that if you ask, you can get a 14 day "Free Trial" that actually clears up everything! So, I went for that. (You have to ask for it, btw!!)
It 'appeared' that MacKeeper was scanning & fixing. I had asked how often one should do this... every 2 -3 weeks... well, that would have meant that my 14 days would have been a moot point, so I tried it on a daily basis for 3 days & it always had "issues" & said it fixed them, but somewhere I found that IT HAD DONE NOTHING!!!
So, I "online chatted" again with a very "knowledgeable guy" who asked if he could take over remotely to check my system to see why MacKeeper was NOT working for me. (I still don't know why it 'appeared' to be working?? And could never get an answer to that one.) Anyway, he took over remotely & "whizzed" through all sorts of stuff & then told me that my MAC WAS DAMAGED!! I asked "as in what?" As in, Launch Agents were missing, for example. I had told the 'Geniuses' when I had my "issue" in December of 2009, that it looked like some of Garage Band, (which I had never used) had disappeared & that it seemed that some of the OS had been deleted along with my files, but they ignored that!
IT TOOK SOMEONE FROM MACKEEPER TO FIND THAT OS APPS WERE MISSING AFTER DEALING WITH APPLE GENIUSES & SPECIALISTS FOR ~2 YEARS WHO HAD NOT A CLUE AS TO WHAT WAS WRONG OR HOW TO FIX IT!!! .......... (WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE????)
Apple-->NO HELP >2.5 yrs......  >3 years paying Apple-->natta. MacKeeper found missing OS Apps in ONE REMOTE VISIT!!!.
THE MACKEEPER GUY SAID THAT I NEEDED TO RE-INSTALL MY OS! To call APPLE... When I told him how I had paid for help & the hours & months of phone calls & frustration with my MAC, he gave me their site to help me to Re-install my OS, but this was a ONE time deal via the internet with only the "trial version". I am past the date... but justifiably so. I, again, "online chatted" with THREE PEOPLE AT THE SAME TIME, who didn't want to help me & who left me hanging for 30 minutes & never came back... grrrrrrrr.
BUT I CANNOT RE-INSTALL MY OS w/out backup with TIME MACHINE, WHICH IS NOT WORKING NOW,......NOT ON MY MAC ANY LONGER!!! [Why??? I have NO idea!!!]
I know that I need to be sure that ALL THAT IS ON MY MAC IS DOWNLOADED TO AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO SAVE, AS WHEN I RE-INSTALL MY OS, IT WILL CLEAR MY MAC & I WILL START ALL OVER AS I DID WHEN I FIRST GOT THE MAC, SO, I HAD BEEN BACKING UP WITH MY TIME MACHINE.... (OR SO I THOUGHT???), BUT DISCOVERED YESTERDAY, THAT MY TIME MACHINE WAS NO LONGER FUNCTIONING... ONLY "READING?" & NEEDED TO BE RE-DOWNLOADED, as well, which means that what I have on my external HD, (Western Digital MYBOOK) will still be there, but that the RE-INSTALLED TIME MACHINE WILL DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING AGAIN, NOT JUST FROM THE LAST TIME IT WORKED.
I called Western Digital tonight to SEE IF my MYBOOK(s) were working properly. He said that they should come up on my desktop, but they rarely ever have, but for a few moments last night & once tonight. I went to the site that tells one how to "fix" TIME MACHINE PROBLEMS, but had already been there & nothing there worked.
He suggested that I go on an APPLE SUPPORT COMMUNITY FOR YOUR HELP & so I am.
SO, HERE ARE MY MAIN QUESTIONS/PROBLEMS/ISSUES:
*HOW DO I FIND OUT JUST WHAT OS FUNCTIONS ARE MISSING?
*WHAT CAN I DO TO GET THEM BACK BESIDES RE-INSTALLING MY OS WITH MY DISKS?
*IF I AM UNABLE TO BACK UP WHAT IS ON MY MAC ONTO MY EXTERNAL HD, THEN WHAT CAN I DO? I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE ANY OF MY PICS, DOCUMENTS, CREATIVE WRITING, IMPORTANT INFO?
*I AM ON DISABILITY & HAVE NO MONEY TO HIRE A MAC SPECIALIST... (& AFTER MY DEALINGS WITH APPLE'S SPECIALISTS, I AM NOT VERY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THAT ANYWAY!) Besides, my MAC is ~4 years old, the clicker on the mouse pad has not worked in ages, it has not enough memory...
*HOW CAN I TELL WHAT IS "SAVED" ON MY EXTERNAL HD (MYBOOK), IF WE CANNOT ACCESS IT? (I CAN HEAR IT RUN & FEEL IT RUN, BUT AFTER TRYING TO "CLEAR" IT, IT IS THE TIME MACHINE ISSUE THAT IT KEEPS SAYING IS THE PROBLEM.
(I AM BETTING THAT THERE ARE MANY MORE OS FUNCTIONS THAT ARE MISSING, AS I HAVE BEEN CURSING THIS MAC ALMOST SINCE I GOT IT.)
AFTER I AM "ONLINE" FOR A WHILE, THE "SPINNING BALL OF DEATH" GOES ON & ON & SAFARI MAY JUST CLOSE DOWN... & IT IS NOT JUST SAFARI, THAT JUST HAPPENS TO BE THE ONE THAT I USE THE MOST!
NOTE: *RECENTLY HAVING PROBLEMS SUCH THAT OFTEN WHEN I HIT /.... IT GOES TO SOME OTHER PART OF THE PAGE or deletes the whole thing!
*ALSO, I OFTEN LOOK UP & WHAT I HAVE TYPED HAS TOTALLY DISAPPEARED AS JUST HAPPENED HERE... OMG
*MAY FIND A FEW WORDS IN ANOTHER PARAGRAPH!.... (WHAT IS GOING ON??)
[PLEASE DON'T BE ANGRY WITH ME FOR ALL THE CAPS, AS IT IS THE ONLY WAY THAT I KNOW TO REALLY EMPHASIZE THE SERIOUS STUFF & AS I OFTEN SAY IN FACEBOOK, "YES, I AM YELLING", but it is at APPLE & my Frustration over the past 3 years!]
Thank any & all of you for any help that you can give. Please be VERY SPECIFIC, as I don't "cookbook" so well.
    ONE MORE THING:
CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF ANY OF THESE ISSUES COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A LIGHTENING STRIKE, WHICH FRIED ALL OF MY TV & INTERNET COMPONENTS?? (If so, my insurance will buy me a new Mac, which would be awesome!)... May need to post this as another question, but am “fried” right now & thought I would just add this. [Most say that because these are “software issues” that ‘NO’, lightening could not have been the culprit or even part of all that is additionally going on, that it would have to be a “hardware issue”. If any of you REALLY SAVVY MAC FOLKS CAN TELL ME DIFFERENTLY & HOW TO PROVE IT, THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! As you can see, I desperately need a new Mac.
    PEACE!

Oh, My! I am so confused & scared. Haven't acted on this or anything else in my life. I am nearly paralyzed with all the issues going on in my life. If ONLY I could GET MY MAC BACK TO PROPER FUNCTIONING. I had issues before the MacKeeper, & lightening strike in March which "fried" all of my components, except this "bloody" Mac, but the problems keep piling on.
Help me, please, someone. I know that you are trying, BDAqua, but I just don't understand?
Yes, that is the window.. says do not open use MacKeeper Downloader, but then shows the "UNINSTALLING MACKEEPER" WEBSITE, which IS MacKeeper's... I don't even know how to do the "Quote Previous Message" for philastokes site, only YOURS & that is NOT what I need.
What is SW????  Calls for Driver 9 For Time Machine, but I think that is related to Time Capsule, which I don't have.
NOTE: SOMEWHERE HERE I SAW SOMETHING ABOUT "LAUNCH AGENTS"... THAT IS ONE OF THE OS PARTS THAT IS MISSING PER MacKeeper... & who knows how many others? Clearly, something has happened to my TIME MACHINE & MY EXTERNAL HD, (MyBook). MacKeeper said that my system was damaged, e.g. "LAUNCH AGENTS" & THAT I NEEDED TO RE-INSTALL MY OPERATING SYSTEM, but without having a FUNCTIONAL BACK UP, I WILL LOSE EVERYTHING.
WESTERN DIGITAL, [MyBook External HD which I used for Time Machine Back up Storage] COULD NOT HELP ME UNTIL I GOT MY "DAMAGES" FIXED & of course MACKEEPER SAID TO CONTACT APPLE OR THEIR "GEEK ON DEMAND" VIA EMAIL, which I have not!
ALL ATTEMPTS AT "FIRST AIDS" FAILED OR WERE NOT AVAILABLE!
What you, BDAqua sent me, I did, but no change... Your "procedure", not the websites.
It is hard to tell from the Philastokes writing what is to BE used & what NOT to use???

MacKeeper – also known as 911 Bundle‘ in the App store — yes, you’ve seen the ads all over the internet, pop ups on your favourite webpages, it seems to be everywhere.
Many people that download and use MacKeeper experience severe problems as a result. My advice regarding this program is:
    ***DO NOT USE IT!***
It is extremely dangerous, particularly its Fast CleanUp option. If you are in any doubt, have a read through some of the several hundred comments below this post. If you have already installed MacKeeper and wish to remove it, read on.
IS THIS THE EXAMPLE OF WHAT NOT TO USE??? ONLY SHOWING US WHAT NOT TO USE???
    Then he states this:
    Uninstalling MacKeeper 2012
If you have used MacKeeper to encrypt any data, unencrypt it now. If you remove MacKeeper without unencrypting your data first, you will not be able to access it later. This only applies to data encrypted with MacKeeper, and not data encrypted using Mac OS built-in encryption services or using any other program.
Once that is done, you can follow MacKeeper’s uninstall instructions here:

These instructions promise that they will remove all MacKeeper’s associated files (see the note ‘Important’ at the bottom of their page). However, you may wish to do Step 4 in the procedure below for earlier versions of MacKeeper to check MacKeeper does not have access to your Keychain.
IS ABOVE WHAT NOT TO USE???_________________
Mine is NOT an earlier version of MacKeeper. I installed in 2012, so it is not clear... but I am guessing that that is what he meant?? Then I read on, & am not sure about a lot of things.
I have NO IDEA whether I have encrypted anything via MacKeeper. I don't even know what encrypting is or whether MacKeeper DID THAT WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE??
    Uninstalling earlier versions of MacKeeper
If you have a version of MacKeeper earlier than MacKeeper 2012 you should follow the procedure below. You may not find ALL of the following, but any you do find should be removed.
    Preparation:
    i. Again, a warning: if you have used MacKeeper’s encryption feature, be sure to unencrypt before you uninstall MacKeeper.
    Time Machine
ii. If you use Time Machine, leave it connected and do the Time Machine Step (TM step) where indicated. Instructions for the TM step are given in the box in step 1 below.
    Clones
iii. If you use a clone without archiving, disconnect the clone and run the procedure below on your internal disk. When it is complete and you have verified everything is OK, connect your clone and wipe the partition using Disk Utility. Then make a new clone.
iv. If you use a clone with archiving, reboot into your clone now and run the procedure below on the clone first. Then shutdown you computer, disconnect the clone from the system and reboot into your internal drive. Run the entire procedure again on your internal drive.
    v. If you have anything in the Trash, empty it now before you start.
My Time Machine says "IT IS NOT CONFIGURED", "BROWSE OTHER TIME MACHINE DISKS... (There are none there, only empty window.) & "OPEN TIME MACHINE PREFERENCES". WHEN I TURN IT ON, A BLANK WINDOW OPENS UP WITH ONLY ONE OPTION, "TURN YOUR TIME CAPSULE ON".
I DON'T HAVE THE TIME MACHINE CAPSULE!So, what do I do here?___________
I DO have TIME MACHINE IN THE UPPER BAR & THE ICON IN MY DOCK.
I don't know what a "clone" is... sort of, (thought it was an "alias/copy", but am probably wrong?? I have no idea whether it is being used or not?? There may be tons of clones on my Mac, or are they "aliases" from the original issue ~3 years ago. NONE that I intentionally put in!
How do I know if I am "archiving" and/or how do I disconnect the clone... "to run the procedure below" on my internal disk?
Then How Do I Connect My Clone, (when I don't even know what it is?) and wipe WHAT PARTITION?  (I don't have access to my Time Machine or my EXTERNAL HD, (MyBook) where the Time Machine HAD been backing up my Mac. My MyBook won't even show up on my desktop.
WHAT IS THE CLONE? .... "IF I USE A CLONE WITHOUT ARCHIVING" VS. "IF I USE A CLONE WITH ARCHIVING".... I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS MEANS???
I HAVE STUFF IN TRASH, BUT AM AFRAID TO DELETE IT... SO DO I BRING IT ALL BACK TO MY MAC? I have so many things brought back from trash.
    The Uninstall Procedure:
Once you have prepared everything as above, you’re ready to start the uninstall procedure.
    1. If MacKeeper is running, quit it. From the sidebar in any Finder window, choose your hard disk icon and go to your Library folder. Look in the Application Support folder for the folder inside it called ‘MacKeeper’:
    /Library/Application Support/MacKeeper
    Click on the folder once.
    TM Step
If you are using Time Machine do the TM Step now.
Enter Time Machine via the TM icon on your menubar at the top of your screen.
Click the little gear/cog in the Finder window and choose ‘delete all backups of xxx file’.
Enter your Admin password to confirm the delete. Exit Time Machine and then…
If you don’t use TM or after you have completed the TM step, hold down the ‘command’ key and press the ‘delete’ key once to send the file to the trash.
    HELP!!------>
I DO USE TIME MACHINE, BUT IT IS NOT WORKING NOW NOR IS THE EXTERNAL HDI CAN'T ENTER TIME MACHINE!
And in Finder, what is the "gear/cog"?? And what are the xxx files? Are they all MacKeeper files???
Why would one complete the TM step IF one doesn't USE TM or have access to it.
*****How do I get my TM back???? _____________
    2. Still in Library, look for and trash any of these you find in the same way, remembering if you have Time Machine to do the TM step first in each case:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.AntiVirus
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plugin.AntiTheft.daemon
    3. If you are using Lion, use the ‘Go’ menu in Finder’s menubar and hold down the ‘option’ key. Choose ‘Library’ from the menu (yes, this is a different Library folder from the one you were just in). If you are using Snow Leopard or Leopard, just click on the little ‘Home‘ icon in the Finder sidebar and navigate to the Library. Then trash any and all of these that you find, remembering to do the TM step (if applicable) first in each case:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.zeobit.MacKeeper
    Home/Library/Caches/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper
    Home/Library/LaunchAgents/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper
    Home/Library/LaunchAgents/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plugin.Backup.agent
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plist
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper.plist
Be careful not to delete the wrong files: only those that have got the words ‘zeobit’, ‘MacKeeper’, ’911′ or ’911bundle’ should be trashed.
Since MY TM is not functioning properly, what do I do? I am so lost?
    4. Go to Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access.app and double click on it. Notice the padlock in the window is up there on the left, rather than down the bottom. Click on it and enter your admin password. Now go through all the items in the ‘Keychains‘ list (such as Login, System, Root) with ‘All items’ selected in the ‘Category’ list. Anything you find related to ‘MacKeeper’ or ‘zeobit’, click on it, then choose Edit > Delete from the menu.
(Thanks to Al for also mentioning this point in the Comments below! ).
    5. Open the Activity Monitor utility (Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor.app), make sure ‘All Processes’ is showing in the drop down menu just over on the right of the dialogue box, then scroll down the list and see if any processes called ‘MacKeeper’, ‘zeobit’ or ’911 bundle’ are still running. Older versions of MacKeeper may have a ‘WINE’ process running, so also look for ‘wine’. Anything you find, click on it and hit ‘Quit Process’ (top left).
    6. Go to your Applications folder from a Finder window and select MacKeeper (if you have Time Machine, do the TM step now). Then, hold down ‘command’ and press ‘delete’ once. If you assigned MacKeeper to be pinned in the Dock, be sure to also drag the icon off the Dock and release it anywhere over the desktop. It will, satisfyingly, disappear in the ‘poof’ of a cloud.
Time Machine issue for me again!!
    7. When you’re done filling up your trash can with all this junk, click on the Finder> Empty Trash.
    8. Go to
 > System Preferences > Users & Groups (or ‘Accounts’ for Snow L) | Login Items
If you see anything to do with MacKeeper in the list of items there, highlight it, then click the little minus ‘-’ button near the bottom of the list.
    9. Restart your Mac. Everything should be back to normal, but check the Activity Monitor one last time to be sure.
    10. After restart, be sure to fix your system permissions. If you encounter any problems that you did not have before, fix the ACLs too.
**If you are running a clone, remember to follow the instructions given above under “Preparation: Clones”.**
Supplementary: If you have a problem with MacKeeper pop-ups while using your browser, try clearing out the caches, like this:
In Safari menubar, choose ‘Safari > Reset Safari’. Make sure all the options are checked.
This will not only clear out your caches, but everything else stored by the browser. Don’t worry, it won’t affect your bookmarks, but it will reset your ‘top sites’ and history.
In Firefox menubar, choose ‘Tools > Clear Recent History…’ and choose ‘Everything’. Again, it’ll clear everything out but won’t delete your bookmarks.
Obviously, if you use any other browsers like Opera or something you’ll have to find the same options for those too.

    NOTES
    1. If you have any problems carrying out the steps, try starting your Mac up in Safe mode, and then running the procedure.
    2. You can safely ignore any MacKeeper files that are in the Logs, BOM or Receipts folders.
    3. If you have only downloaded the MacKeeper package but not ran the installer, you only need to send the .pkg file in your Downloads folder to the Trash. That’s it!

BDAqua, Is there any way for me to directly contact PhilStokes directly to have him read all that we have shared here, since he is the writer & obviously has had the experience & could possibly "Walk me through this" & answer some of my questions & asuage my fears??
Anything that YOU can do to continue to help is also greatly appreciated. I am doing nothing until I know what to do, with all the other issues that are going on, I just don't know what to do?? It is NOT simple as you can see!

    You should be seeing this...
Wonder why no one else is responding to my questions???
Feel free to start a new question, perhaps that'll work!?

  • I have a Vin, iMac 20 inch early 2008 . Can anyone tell me the now equivalent of this model? We had a housefire and I need to replace it new for old. I have a serial no. but cant find out which one would be the same model to replace it now.

I am trying to find out how to find the specs because the machine is my daughters and it is no longer useable but if I know where I can find its details from the serial no I can get it replaced new for old on the house insurance. Where can I find these details?

I lost equipment due to lightening strike several years ago, which also had old equipment and was not available. I gave insurance images and provided original receipts (my purchases were made on Apple.com), and Apple provided electronic copies of the receipts. You may want to contact Apple and check, if they can provide a copy. Insurance may depreciate the original value. I was offered residual value which i used to buy newer replacements, and provided the receipts for replacements back to insurance.

  • Windows 8.1 need help with Windows Updates and Start menu Or fix my old Windows Xp system

My beloved windows Xp has gave up after many years of working well. It stopped working a few days ago after a lightening strike.
I got this Windows 8.1 computer a few month ago  but it seems to have a problem. I stopped using it after could not get start menu to work and when back to my Windows XP system.
First problem is the start menu is not there. I tried installing something and it says it will take control or something and screen goes black. I clicked canceled quickly in order not to get a virus.
    Where is the start menu?
Second problem, Windows updates does not want to update because it needs Windows 8.1 update. This computer is already Windows 8.1. There I canceled it since it was mostly a virus. Now updates are not working.
If those can not be fixed, how can i fix my Windows Xp to get it back. It does not turn on, I press button and nothing happens. Is this something easy to fix?

Another user discovers that Windows 8.1 is not at all of what it should be.
There is no Start Menu in Windows 8 or 8.1.  However, you can restore your desktop start menu with a very good freeware application:
    Classic Shell
Windows Update comes with Windows 8.1.  There is nothing special you have to do.
It kind of sounds like you've been a bit too quick to download and run whatever you find on the Internet.  You should always research any software you're considering downloading/installing ahead of time.  Google it.  See what others say
about it.  Ask on forums.  In order to use Windows effectively and safely you need to expand your knowledge and become a more sophisticated user.
If you think your new system has become infected, you might want to consider Refreshing or Resetting it to a clean state, or at least visiting one of the anti-malware forums and getting some advice on cleaning it up.  But beware, a lot
of "blind leading the blind" happens on forums.  Always try to read between the lines, and question what people say.
You could consider leaving XP behind.  Its time has come and gone, and pretty much any newer version of Windows can actually give you better service than XP - once you get it tuned up.
It's possible to make Windows 8.1 more functional than XP and about as functional as Windows 7, but it takes a fair bit of effort in reconfiguration and installation of some well-known 3rd party applications that are good (which, unfortunately, most
    on the internet are not).
    Good luck to you.

  • Warning! Supplied new HomeHub2 modem cable burnt o...

I joined BT Broadband on December 15th, and installed the supplied HomeHub.2 modem that day, using the BT supplied RJ11 to RJ11 cable to connect the HomeHub to the ASDL output on the main phone socket- my landline phone was connected to the other phone output on the main socket.
Everything worked fine, including the Broadband Hub phone, landline phone, HomeHub providing steady Download speed of c.1.9Mps, Upload speed c.395kps, until this past weekend.
On Sunday, I noticed the landline phone started 'crackling and popping' during a short incoming call.
Then the Broadband speed from the HomeHub dropped from the usuak 1.9Mps, down to around 64kps.
I used the 'Restore to Default' setting on the Hub Manager, to try and rectify this, but this then caused--
    (1) Despite the normal 4 blue lights being shown on the HomeHub, no Hub phone dialtone was now present.
    (2) Broadband speed from the HomeHub stayed at the low 64-76kps
    (3) On the landline phone, line noise was so bad it almost drowned out the dialling tone.
Unplugging the HomeHub's RJ11 plug from the main phone socket, restored the landline phone back to normal.
Strangely, if I tried only the HomeHub connected to the main phone ASDL socket, (without the landline phone connected) with the Hub phone plugged into the Hub, this caused the 'Broadband' and 'Phone' blue lights on the Hub, to immediately extinguish.
After a lot of puzzlement, trying out other phones and equipment, etc, I thought to check the modem cable connecting the HomeHub to the ASDL socket on the main phone socket- the cable that has the RJ11 plugs on either end of it, and that were supplied with the HomeHub by BT, only 6 months ago.
I found that the RJ11 plug which went to the ASDL socket, had both of the tiny gold contacts completely burnt out- the surrounding plastic had been burned black and actually had melted through.
I replaced this cable with a spare I had from my previous Wireless Router, resulting in everything working again, as normal, except for my Broadband download speed- this stayed at around 65kps.
I phoned BT Broadband Tech Help yesterday to report the continuing slow Broadband speed, and was told that "an Open Line Fault had been reported on Sunday at 14.32hrs and this fault was still unresolved" Strange- I didn't report a fault until yesterday?? BT told me the slow Broadband speed could be caused by this problem, and that it could be located at my local telephone exchange (which is 2 miles away) and that it would resolve itself "shortly".
    I have 2 main concerns-
    a) What caused the RJ11 cable plug to burn and melt? It was only 6 months old, supplied with the HomeHub by BT, and it could have caused my house to go on fire, with serious consequences. Is it part of a faulty batch and has it happened to anyone else? Is the HomeHub.2 faulty, or what, despite it working ok now?
    b) Was it this shorting out and burning of the HomeHub's RJ11 modem plug, that has caused my Broadband download speed to drop to the current 65kps, instead of my usual 1.9Mps? Would this have caused malfunction of the Broadband provision equipment on my phone line, down at my local telephone exchange, resulting in although everything is now apparantly working ok with the new modem cable, I'm still only getting this slow download speed? And why only slow download speed, as the upload speed is almost normal?
Any ideas or comments would be welcomed- has this happened to you?
    David Grieve, Dumfries, Scotland.

    Hi David,
Many years ago I worked as a Test Engineer in a factory that manufactured telephones.
The only thing I can think of that would have melted the RJ11 contacts, is that the contacts must have had a very high electrical current passed through them.
Your equipment needs to be examined by qualified electronics engineer, ideally a telecoms specialist, but I would suspect that if the two contacts are those of the telephone line - if I remember correctly they are refered to as "A" and "B" by telecoms engineers - then all I can think of is there must be a short circuit inside your router shorting out the line - possibly a surge protector inside the modem has failed short circuit.
The only thing that I can think that could possibly cause this problem is is a high voltage, or power surge, on the telephone line caused by a lightening strike. Have you had a thunderstorm lately?
Some years ago, the phone pole outside my mates house was struck by lightening and it blew seven grades of s**t out of his computer. He was using an internal modem at the time that he left permanantly connected to the line, though fortunately the computer wasn't switched on when it happened.
Other than a thunderstorm, I can't really see how a phone line on it's own could cause this damage, as the 50V DC present on the line can only give a small, limited, "wetting" current, and it would take a current of 1 Amp or more to heat the contacts enough to melt the plastic in the connector. During a lightening strike, many hundreds of Amperes can flow to earth, this is the most likely explanation for the problem, as most of the energy would have been absorbed by the spark gaps and surge protectors inside the BT Master socket, but it would take only a fraction of this energy to damage your router.
In my experience the most common cause of damage to phones or modems is by a power surge caused by a lightening strike.
    Regards,
    Harry.

  • Website created in Dreamweaver CS4 doesn't look right in CS6

I used to have an old version of Dreamweaver (CS4 I think) and my laptop got taken out by a lightening strike.  I have had to purchase Dreamweaver CS6 and I have loaded up my website (files recovered from hard drive) but the pages don't look right - wrong colours, wrong font, text missing, buttons not displayed properly etc.  any help gratefully received!

Are you sure site files on your hard drive were not damaged by the electrical surge?
Can you GET replacement files from your remote server?

  • Connecting a 'cherry' eMac to broadband...

I've graciously come into ownership of an original eMac (700MHz, 128MB RAM, Mac OS 10.1.4, CDRW) I was wondering what the trick was to get this ol' girl online, the previous owner used Dial-Up, by I utilize broadband (Road Runner, through a Linksys Wireless-G Router), my OS X experience began at 10.3 so I don't know what to do besides just plug in the Ethernet cable and it works (magically almost)...could someone point me into the direction to turn this eMac into a lean-mean email checking machine-

Unfortunately, that does make it all too possible that the Ethernet port is damaged. Could've been a lightening strike that was blocked from the power line path by a surge protector but leaving the Ethernet cable overlooked as a source for a surge to strike the computer. As a very long-shot fix attempt (it's unlikely to work, but it's fairly quick, and doesn't cost anything), try removing all peripherals other than the keyboard and mouse, then removing the power cord from the side of the eMac (to remove the trickle current drawn by modern electronics even when nominally off) and waiting 15+ minutes. Then reattach the power cord only and start the Mac. Check System Profiler again and see if the Ethernet port is recognized.
Do you have the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the eMac?
You could try calling any local Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) and ask what they charge for diagnosing hardware and for a ballpark estimate on what it would cost to repair the Ethernet port. That's likely to be more than the computer is worth, through.
WiFi is an alternative for getting the eMac online. As Bill W. already noted, the original 802.11b Airport card used by the 700 MHz eMac is hard to find and when it does turn up it's overpriced. Unfortunately, a wireless Ethernet bridge adapter (usually sold with gaming systems such as the PS/2) won't work if the Ethernet port is gone. I don't know firsthand of any USB Wireless brige adapters that have proved reliable with PPC Macs.
Any USB wireless adapter is certain to require a latter OS than 10.1.4. Having used 10.1.5, I can second the recommendation, should you be able to either get the Ethernet port working or find a good USB WiFi adpater, to upgrade the OS. You'll also need to increase the RAM; adding a 512 MB DIMM from Crucial will serve nicely.
The retail (black label) Tiger 10.4 Install comes on a DVD, through; unless you add or borrow an external Firewire DVD-ROM or DVD-RW drive, you'd have to call the Apple Store and ask if the Media Exchange Program is still running (the website link is down, but some people apparently have gotten the Media Exchange by asking a live Apple Store operator for it). That exchanges the Tiger DVD for a set of CDs. It was possible to do an Archive and Install from 10.1.x to 10.2.x and then from 10.2 to 10.4, but to upgrade directly from 10.1.x to 10.4, you'll need to do an erase and install.
