Lights on nothing plugged in

Hey my roommates have recently had a party at my house, now my WRT54G router/switch has all four ethernet lights on though nothing is plugged. The Internet light is on though there is no internet cable in. The power light is blinking and wlan and dmz lights are off. Did one of my roommates retarded friends spill beer on my router, or is this fixable?

You will need to trust your own nose regarding the beer question.
Your router may be dead.  But there is still some hope.  Try the fix at this URL:
http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3703&p_created=11515...
If the above fix fails, then there is one last hope:
Try again to reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
5) Power down the router.
6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Airport won't light up - nothing.  it's only  16 months old. is it unusual for it to be dead?

Airport won't light up - nothing.  I've only had it 16 months.  Is it possible that it died that quick?  Any suggestions?  Thank you very much.

Yes, it would be unusual for AirPort Express to fail after only 16 months of use. However, anything is possible, including anything from an external source like a lightning strike or power-surge to a circuit failure of the base station itself.
If you haven't already, I would try a "factory default" reset on it. You may want to do this a couple of time to make sure it "sticks." If after doing these the status light is still off and the unit does not appear to be warm to the touch when plugged in, it most likely has failed.

  • Macbook Pro I get a light for a few seconds then a blinking light, then nothing, no start up, nothing.

I can't restart my Macbook Pro after putting it to sleep.  I now get a blinking light, then nothing.  The computer will not start up, even after doing what is recommended in the mannual.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Were you able to solve it?  How were you able to resolve it?  Thanks for any help you can send my way.  mt

Thanks for the help.  Unfortunately I live a 5 hour drive to my closest Apple store, so making a "Genius" appointment is not possible at this time.  I have tried re-seating my memory cards, I have also tried using the original memory cards that I replaced in favor of more memory.  I got the 3 beeps and 5 second pause 3 beeps indicating that the RAM doesn not pass integrity check.  Am I still at the "Genius" appointment?  Thanks for your help.

  • My phone keeps telling me the cable plugged in is not certified for my iPhone! There is nothing plugged in atall and this comes up every 30 secs or so,how can I turn it off?

Every 30 seconds or so my phone tells me this, "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPhone." There is nothing plugged in! How can I get this to stop coming up? To say it's annoying is an understatement!

    Hey Readie85,
Thanks for the question. This alert usually appears if there is debris in your dock connector. Check to make sure it is free of any debris:
“This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPhone."
"This accessory is not supported by this device."
If either of these alerts appear and nothing is connected to the dock connector, make sure that the dock connector is free of debris.

  • MBP (early 08) shows VGA display when nothing plugged in

My macbook pro early 2008 shows VGA display when there is nothing plugged in. It performs just like there is an actual display plugged into it. I have run AHT and it tells me nothing is wrong. I have reset pram. I deleted all the prefs that relate to the video prefs. It actually works when i do plug a DVI-> VGA Adaptor, but when i plug the DVI-> Video adaptor in only the s-video works. Composite video ends up with out any luminance. My best idea is there is a pin jammed in there from one of the video adaptors, and it's somehow telling the system that there is an adaptor plugged in, but I'm open to trying anything right now. This computer was purchased 3 years and 1 month ago, so it's just out of apple care.

well it is a hardware issue, at least it has nothing to do with OSX. I did recently delete my bootcamp partition, and I know the windows version of the nvidea driver has a bit more control over things, I'm wondering if I should reinstall bootcamp to see if it is something in the Video Card's rom that Windows changed. I read that somewhere in a post on this board somewhere someone was able to easily change this problem in that driver.... why do you think AHT wouldn't catch the issue?

  • "incompatible accessory" nothing plugged in.

I keep getting the "incompatible accessory" pop up but I have nothing plugged in. Happening every 2-3 minutes or so.

This is happening with mine.  I have cleaned the dock connector multiple times.  I used a soft brush and I've used compressed air.  No luck.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  • Red light and nothing else

    Hi all,
I bought the BBZ30 2 days ago, everything was working fine and then I got an alert for a software update. During the update my phone switched itself off and all that is happening now is the red flashing light and nothing on the screen. The phone was fully charged prior to the update and I can't switch it back on. It has been like this for 12 hours.
    Please help.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h process, your BB must remain directly connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB, not a cradle):
Connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
Force a reboot by holding the up/down arrow keys together for at least one minute
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
If this fails, then somehow the OS update became corrupt during the process, and you will need to attempt a very forceful method of installing an OS to your device...AutoLoader:

Hopefully it will succeed. Good luck and let us know!

  • Why does the color red change from working with images in develop to library?  The color gets lighter and nothing shows a change on histogram but visually you can see it.

Why does the color red change from working with images in develop to library?  The color gets lighter and nothing shows a change on histogram but visually you can see it.

That's probably a broken display profile. The conversion from Library's Adobe RGB is different than the conversion from Develop's linear ProPhoto, so if there's a problem with the display profile it can show up this way.
Recalibrate, or if you don't have a calibrator use sRGB. If your monitor is a wide gamut model use Adobe RGB.
Assuming Windows, change it in Control Panel > Color Management > Devices, and relaunch Lightroom so that it can pick up the new profile at startup:

  • Audition picking up noise with nothing plugged in?

    Hey,
I bought an Auzentech X-Meridian 1st Generation sound card and I've installed it in my computer at work, where I have Audition CS6. I want to record stuff through LINE-IN.
I wanted to do a test and it seems there's a default noise when capturing audio. It's faint but you can hear it and also see it in the Levels panel:
It happens with every setting I could change in Audition, even when there is nothing plugged into the LINE-IN jack.
Do you have any idea what might be causing this?
    Thanx!

That's not faint - that's pretty loud! What you've got here is a sound card that works slightly worse than most cassette recorders! A decent modern sound device would have a line-in self-noise level that is, in dB terms, about twice as good as that, if not more.
Bob's probably right about plugging something into it to reduce the noise - but this would only work if it's a low-impedance output device that you feed it with. And to be fair, that is generally the case; most line sources are relatively low impedance.
Do you have any idea what might be causing this?
Think you'll find that it's caused by highly mobile electrons! What you need is a device that keeps them better under control...

  • WHY, when I have nothing plugged in does Windows flag up a USB device that is does not recognise?

WHY, when I have nothing plugged in does Windows flag up a USB device that is does not recognise?  When I check it a box comes up which offers a diagram that does not tell me which port it is?  How do I check which port/outlet it actually is? Could
there be software (rather than a USB port) in my system that Microsoft doesn't recognise? The Windows defender scan shows nothing and the Windows reporter said twice now there are 10 problems but they can't report back right now.  Should
I be worried?  What should I do?  Everything I want to do within the operating system seems to be working and my speed hasn't noticeably changed.  Can anyone help?
PS What is code 43?  Also it says Broadcom 270 Bluetooth is disabled, what does that do?  Should I enable it, won't it allow Bluetooth access, which I don't need?  The scanning of hardware seems to say Hardware changes may not have been detected
as well as Unknown Device is not working properly.

  • My USB ports Using too much power with nothing plugged in.

So i have this macbook pro mid 2009 model. Whenever i boot the computer up, there's this message that comes up. USB ports must be shut off because its using too much power blah blah blah. Theres nothing plugged into them!
Everything works, camera and all that, but the USB ports.
Do i need to download anything to get them to working?
Is it with the logic board?
    or idk what to do!
    Please help!

Have you tried an SMC reset and PRAM reset?
    SMC Reset
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer’s power cord and disconnect peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Reset PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P and R.
You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If that doesn't help, perhaps re-installing the 10.7.2 update using the combo (unless you already tried this):
OS X Lion Update 10.7.2 Client Combo
repairing disk permissions before and after updating.

  • T60 will not boot - lights, but nothing on the screen, no beeps

    Hey everyone,
My approximately 4 year old (and thus out of warranty) T60 is having trouble booting. Sometimes, but not always, when I press the power button I get the lights turning on, but then all but the power (Z in a circle) indicator and the battery (if I have it in - I've tried it with and without) and the power cord (if that's plugged in- again, tried every way) lights stay on. Here's a video of exactly what's happening (made by someone else):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pm4Lklr6-Rk
It just sits there and nothing comes up.
I've tried the following and still had trouble booting:
Removing each of the two RAM modules (I have a 512 and a 2gig stick) - I would leave one in so that it would work, but I tried it with each.
    Removing the hard drive
    Removing the optical drive
I also opening it up to see what I could see, but there are no clearly loose connectors. The fan starts just fine, but then turns off shortly after I press the power button. The harddrive also seems to spin up, but the indicator doesn't flash for very long before the lights return to the configuration I mentioned above. There are as far as I know no beeps, though I had beeps disabled in Windows (not sure if that matters at the POST level though).
However, it does sometimes boot up. I can't tell what exactly makes it work sometimes and other times not. When it does boot, it is extremely stable and works just fine. I'm tempted to just leave it on 24/7, but I'm on vacation and will have to turn it off at least to get through airport security.
The last time, I tried holding the power button down for about a minute with all power sources disconnected, and it did boot up, but that may have been coincidence.
I've seen some threads that make it seem like perhaps this problem might be related to the USB ports (http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T400-won-t-boot-can-t-access-BIOS/td-p/20280... but visual inspection doesn't reveal anything wrong with them.
Any ideas? I'm leaving it on as long as I can now, but I can play more with turning it off and trying things once I get back home in a few days. It's frustrating, since once I get it to start up, it's more or less solid and Windows and all peripherals seem to run as expected.
    Thanks!

  • Itunes telling me ipod is corrupt - what can I do?  Only have light on nothing else

My daughter's ipod won't turn on, she thought it was a problem with battery but I have charged it and light comes on but nothing else.  Connected it to iTunes only to be told Ipod is corrupted - what can I do?  Went to support centre but Monday before I can get a response.

Have you tried rebooting for the Mac and iPod to see if that helps? To reset the iPod, press and hold both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
It wouldn't hurt to also try plugging the iPod into another USB port and use a different USB sync cable.

  • Why does the "this cable or accessory is not certified..." message continue to come up on my iphone, when I have nothing plugged into my iphone and have never used anything other than the cables that originally came with this iphone?

As the question says.  This message pops up on my iphone every 30 seconds, even though nothing is plugged in.  I have turned my phone off an on, plugged in the real cable and unplugged it, restarted the ios, nothing works.  This started only after I updated to ios7.

Check the port with a magnifying glass and a bright light. There may be something stuck in it.
    Best of luck.
